Champaign Emergency Teams Mobilize for Vehicle Incident at Kaufman Lake

In a recent development, the vehicle that plunged into Kaufman Lake in Champaign has now been successfully retrieved from the water. This update follows an earlier report confirming that no individuals were found inside the submerged car.

The incident, which occurred on a Wednesday morning, left first responders puzzled as they arrived on the scene. Randy Smith, serving as the Public Information Officer for the Champaign Fire Department, provided insights to WCIA reporters onsite. He noted the absence of any tire tracks or clear evidence explaining how the vehicle ended up in the lake.


Authorities promptly assured the public that efforts were underway to extricate the car from the water, and the retrieval was completed by 10:10 a.m. The mysterious circumstances of the vehicle’s path to the lake remain under investigation as officials seek to uncover the details surrounding this unusual incident.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — First responders said no one is inside the car that crashed into Kaufman Lake Wednesday morning.

Randy Smith, the Public Information Officer for the Champaign Fire Department, also told WCIA’s reporter on the scene that the car should be pulled out of the water soon. There are no tire tracks and no indication of how the vehicle ended up in the water.

The Champaign Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit is on scene. 


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Emergency crews are responding to a car that went into Champaign’s Kaufman Lake Wednesday morning.

A WCIA reporter on the scene said at least seven emergency vehicles responded to the lake after receiving word of a vehicle in the water. Only the roof is still above the lake’s surface.

As of 9:07 a.m. divers from the Champaign County Dive Team had attached ropes to the car in preparation of pulling it out of the water. There is no word if anyone is inside the car.
