DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Tavon Wilson, a former University of Illinois safety who enjoyed a decade-long career in the NFL, is making a meaningful return to Central Illinois with a mission to give back to the community.
Wilson will be the featured speaker at an event in Decatur called “The Locker Room,” scheduled for May 1-2. This weekend promises a series of activities focused on fostering community connections and addressing important issues.
The initiative, which Wilson hopes will resonate with local families, particularly aims to create lasting memories. As a father to two boys, Wilson is deeply invested in making a positive impact. “I wanted to organize something that would truly be impactful and have a lasting influence,” Wilson shared. “My sons are my top priority, which inspired the idea of a father-son weekend.”

The event will include activities like haircuts and open conversations, providing a space to discuss various topics that weigh on people’s minds. “It’s designed to be like a barbershop setting where people feel comfortable to express whatever is on their hearts,” Wilson explained. This approach emphasizes the importance of community support and open dialogue, akin to the candid and welcoming atmosphere of a traditional barbershop.
“I really wanted to do something that’s impactful, and that’s long-lasting,” Wilson said. “My sons are the most important thing to me, so we came up with this event with the father-son weekend.” “It’s haircuts and conversations to start to address different issues.” “Things on people’s hearts, whatever it may be, kind of like the barbershop set up to where when you go to the barbershop, you’re kind of comfortable.”
Wilson played for the Illini from 2008-11 before getting drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, who he later won Super Bowl XLIX with. He also played for the 49ers, Colts, and Lions.
