CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Josh Gesky, a former offensive lineman for the University of Illinois, is embarking on his professional football career with the Green Bay Packers, staying relatively close to his roots.
Hailing from Manteno, Illinois, Gesky joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft. During his final season with the Fighting Illini in 2025, he earned an honorable mention in the All-Big Ten selections.
“It feels incredible,” Gesky expressed to WCIA about his entry into the NFL. “It still feels surreal. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity. They saw potential in me, and now it’s my turn to show them what I can do.”
There was anticipation, even from Illinois’ head coach Bret Bielema, that Gesky might be drafted. Although his name wasn’t called during the draft, securing his contract with the Packers marked a memorable milestone for him.
“All I ever needed was a chance, and that’s exactly what they’ve given me,” Gesky remarked. “Receiving that call was an amazing moment, especially being able to share it with those who supported me throughout my journey. Now, I can pursue my dream.”
One potential positive of going undrafted is the freedom which comes with choosing your spot – if multiple offers exist. Gesky chose Green Bay. Why?
“I love the toughness there,” he said. “It’s the snow, it’s the north. Everything that I want they have. They’re built on toughness, nastiness, the way they play the game. They’re built on strong offensive linemen and that how they win games, that’s how they play, that’s how all teams do. And I want to be a part of that culture.”
Despite growing up less than an hour from Chicago, the longtime Illini starter claims he did not have a strong NFL fandom associated with one team growing up. He does now.
“Go Pack Go,” he said with a smile. “Now it’s easy for me. I’m beyond blessed that they gave me the opportunity and I’m looking forward to going out there and proving them right.”
Gesky also expressed his excitement for the three other recent Illini offensive line graduates who are getting their own NFL opportunities. J.C. Davis was drafted by the New York Giants, Melvin Priestly signed with the Lions and Josh Kreutz is expected to attend the Bears’ rookie minicamp.
Gesky goes to Green Bay on Thursday ahead of Packers minicamp.
