LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — In a groundbreaking victory at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, Golden Tempo galloped to triumph, marking a historic achievement for Cherie DeVaux as the pioneering female trainer to clinch the opening race of the Triple Crown.
Golden Tempo surged ahead in the final stretch, securing a memorable win for DeVaux in the 1 1/8-mile contest. Trailing behind, Renegade claimed second place while the long-shot contender Ocelli finished third.

DeVaux now joins the ranks as the second woman to train a winner in any Triple Crown event, following Jena Antonucci’s success with Arcangelo at the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Remarkably, DeVaux captured the Derby on her very first attempt, completing a journey that began eight years ago when she launched her own racing stable.
As the week unfolded, DeVaux moved from modestly downplaying the significance of becoming the first female Derby-winning trainer to embracing her role as an inspiration to young girls aspiring to succeed in the racing world. Notably, she is only the 18th woman to have saddled a horse in this prestigious race.
Jockey Jose Ortiz showcased his exceptional skills at Churchill Downs, securing his inaugural Derby victory on his 11th attempt. In a sibling rivalry, he outperformed his brother Irad, who was aboard Renegade, to achieve this milestone.
The race went on with just 18 horses after Great White was a late scratch for flipping and throwing his jockey.
