In McCormick, South Carolina, a significant fire erupted at a local high school, prompting a swift response from Upstate firefighting teams in the early hours of Saturday.
McCormick School District Superintendent Jaime Hembree detailed that the blaze at McCormick High School began around 11 p.m. on Friday. Initial investigations suggest that a lightning strike may have been the cause.
Firefighters from several areas, including Calhoun Falls, Abbeville, Bethia, North Augusta, Newberry, and Lexington, collaborated throughout the night and into the morning to extinguish the flames.

By Saturday morning, the fire was under control, though crews remained vigilant, addressing lingering hot spots and ensuring the site’s safety.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, although the school’s roof suffered extensive damage as a result of the fire.
Hembree said the district is now working on plans for the final week of school and high school graduation.
