JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) — In a closely watched Republican primary, Will Monk successfully secured his position as a judge in the Washington County General Sessions Court, overcoming former Johnson City Mayor Steve Darden.

Monk triumphed over Darden by capturing 58% of the votes, tallying 4,492 votes compared to Darden’s 3,237. Voter turnout was notably low, with just over 10% of eligible voters participating in the election.

Back in July 2025, Monk was appointed by the Washington County commissioners to fill the remaining term of Robert Lincoln, who retired three years into his eight-year tenure. Monk emerged victorious against Darden in the final round of voting, winning by a margin of 9-5.

Prior to his appointment, Monk served as an assistant district attorney in the First Judicial District. He emphasized to News Channel 11 on Monday that the judicial role demands dedication, consistency, and impartiality, free from political influence.

Monk reflected on his tenure, stating, “Since stepping into the role, I’ve established a reputation for diligence, thorough preparation, and fairness, having managed to resolve nearly 3,000 cases within my first six months on the bench.”

“My court places a strong emphasis on accountability, protecting families and children, and helping individuals who are willing to put in the effort to earn a second chance under the law. The court’s responsibility is to deliver outcomes that are lawful, thoughtful, and in the best interest of the community.”

No Democrats are independents are on August’s general election ballot. Monk’s term will end in 2030, with that election being for a standard eight-year term.
