In the picturesque city of Savannah, Georgia, a family finds themselves in the midst of a difficult rebuilding journey after a devastating house fire left them with only the clothes on their backs. The Campbell family, whose lives were upended in a matter of minutes, is now facing the arduous task of starting over.
It was shortly after midnight on Saturday when the Campbells’ home was engulfed in flames, forcing them to flee rapidly. The sudden change in their circumstances has left them grappling with the fragility of life and the speed at which everything can shift.
The family had been sound asleep when a woman’s urgent knocking on their door disrupted the silence of the night. Her warning that the house was on fire proved critical.
“She told us the garage side of the house, which is on my right, was ablaze,” recounted Brenda Campbell. “She said we had to get out immediately.”
In those frantic moments, Brenda and her husband Clyde acted quickly to ensure their safety and that of their adult son, who depends on them for his daily needs. Their swift actions were crucial in ensuring they made it out unharmed.
“I got the hose and sprayed,” said Clyde. “When I was spraying the water on the side of the house, it was like I was spraying gasoline on. It seemed like it ignited all the more.”
The fire quickly spread and also impacted neighboring properties.
In the aftermath, the family said they are leaning on their faith and gratitude for survival.
“I thought about all the material things that we were losing in the fire, but I could still see God’s glory in saving our lives because he definitely sent an angel,” Clyde said. “That lady was supposed to get off work at 11:30, but she worked late, so I know that was God watching over us.”
The fire caused thousands of dollars in damage, including small business inventory. The family is currently staying in a hotel as they work to figure out their next steps.
The Red Cross has assisted the family with temporary housing and other essential needs, according to the family.
State fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
“This is a story that somebody needs to hear and see that, hey, if you lose some material things and you still have life,” Clyde said.
The Campbells said their focus now is recovery. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family.
