WASHINGTON – Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office said.

Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm Saturday while attending his son’s hockey game, according to a Sunday statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.

“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Herwitt said. Murphy was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for additional monitoring. She said he is responding well to treatment, is awake and alert, and that doctors are encouraged by his progress. “We are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” she said.

Murphy is 53 years old.
