In a stark reminder of the consequences of youth crime, the case of a Decatur teenager culminated in a sentencing hearing on Monday, leaving a community pondering the repercussions of a momentary lapse leading to a lengthy penalty.
Nineteen-year-old Jerrion Jarrett learned his fate before the court, standing solemnly as the sentence was handed down. Having earlier entered a guilty plea to charges of aggravated robbery, Jarrett faced the reality of a four-year prison sentence for his role in stealing a $19,000 watch at gunpoint earlier this year.
The court proceedings unfolded with both prosecution and defense presenting their perspectives, each side submitting one piece of evidence. Jarrett also took the opportunity to speak on his behalf, attempting to sway the decision of Judge Thomas Griffith, who held the power to determine the length of his incarceration.
The terms of Jarrett’s plea agreement generously allowed Judge Griffith to exercise discretion over the sentencing. Weighing the gravity of the crime, Griffith concluded that a prison term was essential, reasoning that probation would fail to reflect the severity of the offense and that incarceration was necessary to ensure public safety.
Decatur Police previously reported that Jarrett was one of two people who, on March 13, approached a man outside T’bacco Shack on Grand Avenue, pulled guns and demanded his Rolex. The victim complied and both offenders, along with a third person accompanying them, ran into a nearby house.
The victim saw this, called police and pointed the responding officers to the house. The Emergency Response Team surrounded the house and demanded the people inside come out. Jarrett was the only one to do so, and police didn’t indicate that anyone else was arrested.
A court-authorized search of the home found both the victim’s watch and clothing that one of the robbers was seen on surveillance footage wearing.
Jarrett was charged with two felony counts of robbery: a Class X count of armed robbery and a Class 1 count of aggravated robbery. He pleaded guilty to the latter count while the former was dismissed.
Court records show Jarrett was given credit for the three months he spent in custody at the Macon County Jail, which will be deducted from his four-year sentence. He is also day-for-day eligible, which would cut his sentence in half.
He will be on parole for one year following his release from prison.
