AUGUSTA, Ga. () – On Thursday evening, the Warren Road Community Center became a hub of discussion as residents gathered to voice their ideas and concerns about potential enhancements to the park.
The meeting was orchestrated by Tameka Williams, who is dedicated to ensuring that the neighborhood’s opinions and needs are acknowledged and addressed.
“It’s crucial to engage with the community to understand their interests,” expressed Tameka Williams, Augusta’s Director of Leadership. “We’ve gathered substantial feedback, and now it’s our task to revisit our plans and determine which programs we can implement that align with the community’s requests. We are exploring how to best utilize the funds available to us to move forward with improvements at this location.”
These enhancements are set to be funded by the recently approved SPLOST act, which passed on Tuesday.
“The passage of SPLOST is a significant step in securing the financial resources needed to upgrade our facilities,” Williams remarked. “When it comes to maintaining and renovating our buildings, many are outdated and in dire need of replacement. The SPLOST funds will be instrumental in addressing these needs.”
The center already provides a list of programs, such as dance, basketball gardening, and more. But local instructor Perry Wong suggested bringing pickleball to Warren.
“There’s a lot of kids and people, not just kids, adults in general to people that want to play, but then they don’t know where to go,” Wong said. “So I’d like to see some formal pickleball opportunities, training opportunities. It’s a great socialization connector where it’s yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know how to describe it unless you’ve experienced it. Once you play it, it’s kind of addicting and you start to meet new people and you’re making friends left and right.”
Wong wants to provide an indoor pickleball class once a week, and eventually hopes the neighborhood will have outdoor courts. This meeting was just the start of restoring process.
