LOS ANGELES — Exclusive footage acquired by ABC News reveals the moment Britney Spears was taken into custody in Ventura County, following claims by authorities that she did not pass a sobriety assessment.
On March 4, Spears found herself under arrest on accusations of driving while impaired by both alcohol and drugs. The California Highway Patrol had responded to calls about a vehicle being driven erratically.
Dashcam footage documented the incident where Spears declined to comply with repeated requests from a CHP officer to step out of her vehicle.
“I have to be straightforward with you; there’s a noticeable alcohol odor coming from your car, alright?” the officer explained to Spears. “That’s why I need you to step out, so I can ask a few questions and conduct a DUI check. If everything checks out, I’ll let you go on your way, alright?”
As a supervisor arrived, Spears tried to negotiate, voicing concerns about being recognized by people passing by.
“What if we have you get out of the car,” CHP tells the pop singer. “We’ll put you in one of our cars and we’ll drive around the corner so we’re somewhere that there isn’t a bunch of people driving by.”
Spears responds by telling the officer she doesn’t want to get into their car.
“You can come to my house,” she is heard saying in the video. “I’ll make you food and lasagna, or whatever you want. I have a pool. My babies are coming to my house tonight supposedly.”
After almost 10 minutes of back and forth, Spears finally steps out of the car, making her way to the sidewalk where officers conduct field sobriety tests.
Officers are seen handcuffing her before placing her in the back of a highway patrol vehicle.
As Spears is taken to a local hospital to have blood drawn, she insists she’s sober.
At one point, Spears tells officers that they were being mean to her. They responded by saying they needed to test her blood.
“I wasn’t even drinking. I had a mimosa this morning. You guys are lying,” Spears said.
Earlier this month, Spears avoided jail time after pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of “wet reckless” driving.
Newly released police records also revealed new details from the arrest. In the DUI report, when officers found Spears, they “detected the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage from inside” her vehicle, they wrote in the report.
The report added that Spears’ eyes were “red and watery, and her pupils were dilated.”
They also noted that her “speech was rapid and slurred, her gait was unsteady, and she was fidgeting with her fingers.”
Following her arrest, a representative for Spears said that she voluntarily checked herself into a facility. Representatives for the singer also shared a statement with ABC News at the time and called her behavior “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.”
As part of her sentence, Spears must attend an alcohol education program for three months, which includes weekly visits with a psychologist and twice-monthly visits with a psychiatrist.
