In the vibrant town of Tolono, Illinois, two rising stars from Unity made quite an impression in their debut college track seasons. Ashlyn Denney and Emily Decker are not only emerging talents but are already making waves in the competitive world of athletics.
Denney showcased her prowess by clinching conference titles in the 800 meters, playing a pivotal role in leading Eastern Illinois University to victory in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) with their indoor distance medley relay team. Meanwhile, Decker etched her name into the record books by securing the second-fastest 3000-meter heptathlon mark in Ball State’s history.
Their strong performances during their freshman years secured them a spot at the U20 Outdoor USA Track and Field Championships held in Oregon. This prestigious event offered them the chance to compete on a national platform, an opportunity that holds the promise of further cultivating their talents as they advance into their sophomore year in college.
Decker expressed her enthusiasm about competing on such a renowned stage. “Competing on that track, I think, cannot be topped,” she remarked. “It’s known as the track capital of the world, so that was pretty awesome to get to be on the bottom part and not just watching.”
As they look ahead, both athletes are hopeful that their experiences on this grand scale will fuel their drive and inspire continued success in their collegiate careers.
“For me, I was very excited to compete against girls better than me, and just have the atmosphere of, like the big crowd around you and that feeling to prepare for hopefully regionals one day,” Denney said.
