AUGUSTA, Ga. — The local stage production “Defeating the Deceiver” is set to captivate audiences at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre in Augusta, weaving together elements of faith, storytelling, and live theater.
Crafted by playwright and producer Samuel Williams, the play centers on a young man convinced he has mastered life, drawing upon his own understanding of technology, philosophy, and personal experiences.
However, this self-assuredness is soon challenged when he distances himself from his family and his faith, setting the stage for a narrative that Williams hopes will encourage audiences to engage in deeper introspection regarding life’s choices and their repercussions.
“The aim is for viewers to see their own stories reflected in the play,” Williams explained. “Being in a church setting offers a profound perspective on our surroundings and experiences.”
The production showcases the talents of local performers from the Augusta area, featuring a mix of familiar faces from last year’s “The Other Side of Jordan” and fresh additions to the ensemble.
Williams said the play is designed for a wide audience, including families, church groups and youth organizations.
“I don’t really have a target audience,” he said. “The audience is the target.”
