WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vice President Kamala Harris is continuing her push to reduce gun violence across the country.

“I support the Second Amendment, but it’s reasonable to say we need an assault weapons ban,” Harris said during an event in Washington, D.C.

Friday, Harris met with leaders from 21 cities in 17 states to address the role community violence intervention plays in keeping communities safe.

“When we are dealing with violence in the community, understand that there are an extraordinary number of factors that have nothing to do with who an individual is that will help you predict whether violence will occur in a community or not,” Harris said.

She listed examples of these factors, including if the public schools in that district are well-funded, the level of homeownership in that community and access to health care.

“We must see people through the complexity of everybody’s life,” Harris added.

Friday’s event is part of a nationwide push by Harris. She’s been traveling around the country in recent months to discuss ways to prevent gun violence.
