Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Marshals” Season 1, Episode 10 — “Playing with Fire”

The series “Marshals” seems to have a knack for introducing new characters linked to Kayce Dutton’s (played by Luke Grimes) past, as depicted in “Yellowstone.” However, these characters are notably absent from the original series, which spanned five seasons.

In the latest episode, “Playing with Fire,” Kayce finds himself tasked with rounding up a group of prisoners who have escaped following a bus accident. Among the escapees is Neil Lamb (portrayed by Sterling Jones), a familiar face to Kayce, who supposedly once worked as a ranch hand on the Dutton Ranch. Kayce is aware that Neil has been attempting to secure leniency from the state and is uncertain whether Neil might reveal any of the Duttons’ secrets for his freedom. When Kayce finally confronts Neil, the latter confesses he knows a lot about John Dutton’s (played by Kevin Costner) most guarded secrets and is willing to fabricate stories to save himself if Kayce allows him to escape to Canada.

Neil, however, seeks clemency from the wrong Dutton and is well aware of it. He candidly tells Kayce, “Even as a boy, you were a different sort of man than your father. You don’t have to solve this problem the way he would.” Despite this, Kayce remains resolute, holding Neil until reinforcements arrive. A storm then stalls any further action, setting the stage for the next episode.

Interestingly, “Marshals” has already introduced other characters allegedly from the Dutton family’s past, yet they never appeared in “Yellowstone.” Episode 3 sees the arrival of Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) and his sons, who come to disrupt the peace. The show suggests a prior acquaintance between Clegg and Kayce. After Kayce is forced to kill one of Clegg’s sons, Randall seeks vengeance, prompting Kayce to go to great lengths to protect his colleagues and family while attempting to bring Clegg to justice.

This isn’t the first time Marshals has invented a big bad from Yellowstone’s past

Believe it or not, “Marshals” viewers have already been introduced to another set of characters from the Dutton family’s past that were never seen even once on “Yellowstone.” Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) and his sons arrive during Episode 3 to stir up trouble — though the show insists that Clegg and Kayce have met before. After Kayce kills one of Clegg’s boys, Randall goes on the warpath, and Kayce ultimately has to risk life and limb to protect his colleagues and family to bring Clegg in.

During the pair’s feud, we learn that the Duttons and Cleggs have been fighting each other for generations — which is news to anyone who devoted themselves to “Yellowstone.” The storyline even results in “Marshals” exhuming an old “Yellowstone” storyline surrounding Tate Dutton’s (Brecken Merrill) Season 2 kidnapping. While loyal viewers definitely learn a little bit more about Kayce thanks to this plot twist, it’s hard to ignore the fact that they — and Kayce himself — have never met these folks before.
