Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord” Season 1, Episode 8 — “The Creeping Fear”
In a thrilling turn of events, the Empire steps up its game by dispatching the formidable Inquisitors to hunt down Maul (portrayed by Sam Witwer). Although Maul narrowly escapes their clutches in “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord” Season 1, Episode 8, titled “The Creeping Fear,” the encounter leaves him deeply unsettled. This brush with danger forces Maul to confront the haunting specters of his past.
This episode delves into Maul’s intricate history through a series of visions and flashbacks. One of his earliest memories revisits the moment his brother Savage Opress attempted to prevent Sheev Palpatine from taking the young Maul away from Dathomir. Following this, Maul recalls his grueling training under Palpatine’s tutelage, which was far from ordinary sparring; instead, it involved enduring the agony of Palpatine’s Force lightning.
Maul’s trip down memory lane brings him face-to-face with the trauma of Obi-Wan Kenobi severing him in two during “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.” The memories grow even more harrowing as he recalls a brief alliance with Opress, cut short by Palpatine’s brutal killing of his brother. These flashbacks culminate in an emotional breakdown for Maul, yet they also reignite his vengeful spirit, prompting him to rise and vow retribution.
It’s important to note that Maul is far from an innocent caught in the crossfire between Jedi and Sith. In the “Star Wars” universe, he’s responsible for his own share of dark deeds. As the series progresses, Maul is resolute in continuing his reign of terror by rebuilding his criminal empire in “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord.”
Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord establishes the former Sith as a tragic character
Make no mistake about it, Maul isn’t exactly an innocent bystander who was caught up in the battle between Jedi and Sith in the “Star Wars” Universe. He’s also committed his fair share of atrocities, and he continues to do so as he rebuilds his criminal empire in “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord.”
What the animated series does, however, is showcase how Palpatine corrupts Maul at a young age, effectively turning him into a child soldier. By isolating him from his family and teaching him the ways of the dark side, Palpatine poisons his mind and makes him more malleable to his suggestions. Yet when Maul falls in battle to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Palpatine discards his former apprentice. When Palpatine meets him again, it’s to slay his brother, destroying any remaining connection that Maul may have to his family.
While all of these events have been covered in previous series, piecing it all together and showcasing Maul’s reaction adds another dimension to his character. He experiences tragedy from an early age, making that all he knows his entire life. Knowing what we do about Maul’s final fate makes this even more tragic, since he’s never afforded a chance at a normal life. He’s doomed from the start. With such depth to the storytelling like this, no wonder “Star Wars” fans are raving about “Maul.”
