Hakeem Jeffries Reaches a Critical Juncture, Signaling Potential Irreversibility

Recently, RedState highlighted comments from Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), made in the wake of the third assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump within two years.

In a tweet posted Sunday night, Jeffries asserted that “America will not be lectured about civility by far-right extremists in Congress.” He criticized those who, in his view, “provide aid and comfort to hundreds of violent rioters who brutally beat police officers on January 6.” Jeffries concluded with a call for unity, which struck some as ironic, given his harsh labeling of political opponents who have voiced legitimate concerns over provocative rhetoric from Democrats.

This statement followed another tweet from Jeffries on Saturday night. Without mentioning Trump’s name, he expressed gratitude for the rapid response of law enforcement during an incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Jeffries added, “Praying for the safety of those who may remain in harm’s way. The violence and chaos in America must end,” which some perceived as missing the mark in addressing the situation involving the former president.

This followed an incredibly tone-deaf tweet from Jeffries on Saturday night in which he didn’t mention the president’s name once, and stated that he was “Thankful for the swift law enforcement action to protect everyone from gunfire at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Praying for the safety of those who may remain in harm’s way. The violence and chaos in America must end.”
