The perpetrator of the April 13, 2024, stabbings in Sydney’s Bondi Junction has been identified as Joel Cauchi, 40. His knife-wielding and rugby league shirt was captured on tape by the retail centre’s CCTV system.
He was known to police before the attack for mental health-related matters and is said to have lived with schizophrenia and used drugs including methamphetamine and psychedelics.
The killer’s dad, Andrew, told reporters on Monday that his son, who long battled with mental illness, had come off his anti-psychotic medication shortly before unleashing terror on his victims.
Cauchi’s dad said: “To you, he is a monster. To me, he was a very sick boy.”
When asked why his son may have targeted women, he added: “He wanted a girlfriend and he’s got no social skills and he was frustrated out of his brain.”
The tearful dad said he loved his son but he had “a fascination with knives” and owned “five or six commando knives”
He continued: “He had a problem with women, he couldn’t get a girlfriend”.
He had a profile on the website Empire Escorts and was employed as a male escort in 2023, according to 9 News AUS.
On his social media accounts, Cauchi displayed a fascination with knives.
He had previously contacted the police to report “domestic violence” after his parents had hidden knives from him, according to police sources.
The owner of a knife-sharpening company told Guardian Australia about a talk he had with Cauchi, saying, “I just dabble a little bit in the backyard with the knives and I use them every day.” said Cauchi
What Happened at Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre?
On Saturday afternoon, April 13, 2024, in the Bondi Junction Westfield retail centre, Cauchi attacked customers.
At least eighteen persons were attacked by him; twelve of them were hospitalized and six of them died.
As of Sunday, April 14, 2023, three individuals are still in serious condition.
One woman has already been released from the hospital, while the other eight are stable.
Inspector Amy Scott, a senior police officer, shot and killed Cauchi when the man refused to put down his gun and attempted to attack the responding officer.
When there were reports of several stabbings, Inspector Scott was in the area.
When Cauchi turned against her and raised a knife, she shot him.
Witnesses said that as Scott waited for assistance to arrive, and she was spotted administering CPR to both the victims of the knife attack and Cauchi.
After watching the incident on TV, Cauchi’s family identified their son as the perpetrator to Queensland Police.
The family said they were “absolutely devastated by the traumatic events” in a statement.
“Joel’s actions were truly horrific, and we are still trying to understand what has happened,” they continued.
“He has battled with mental health issues since he was a teenager.”
The family said they had “no issues with the police officer who shot their son as she was only doing her job to protect others and we hope she is coping alright”.

People Who Joel Cauchi Killed at Bondi Junction Westfield Shopping Centre
According to TheSun.co.uk, He stabbed five women and one man to death.
The victims are:
- Faraz Tahir, 30, a refugee who started working as a security guard in the shopping centre on the day of the attack died after being stabbed.
- Dr Ashlee Good, 38, a first-time mum also died in the hospital and her nine-month-old baby was also stabbed. After hours of emergency surgery, Dr Good’s family reported the baby girl is now “doing well”.
- Dawn Singleton, 25, an e-commerce assistant and daughter of businessman John Singleton, also died in the attack
- Jade Young, 47, an architect and mother-of-two also tragically died at the shopping
- Pikria Darchia, 55, a local artist died in the attack
- Yixuan Cheng, 27, is a Chinese student studying economics at the University of Sydney.
