King Charles and Queen Camilla are continuing with their planned visit to Washington D.C., despite an attempted assassination on President Donald Trump.

Their decision follows a series of urgent overnight security briefings conducted in both Washington and London. These meetings took place after the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Officials from both governments reviewed the four-day visit’s itinerary and agreed to enhance certain security measures.

Senior royal sources indicate that while two of the scheduled events will be adjusted to accommodate the increased security needs, the overall itinerary remains unchanged. Palace insiders have noted that the King and Queen, who are set to depart for the U.S. on Monday, April 27, 2026, are “eager” to proceed with the visit. They plan to continue with their diplomatic mission, allowing security personnel to implement any necessary adjustments.

A spokesperson from Buckingham Palace confirmed this decision after extensive transatlantic discussions and consultations with government advisors. The spokesperson expressed the royal couple’s gratitude for the prompt efforts made to ensure the visit proceeds smoothly.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the confirmation came after a full day of cross‑Atlantic discussions and government advice, adding that the royal couple were grateful for the swift work carried out to keep the visit on track.

They told several outlets: “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned. The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow.”

Sir Christian Turner, the UK’s Ambassador to the US, said British and American officials had been working “around the clock” since the shooting at the Washington Hilton.

He praised the US Secret Service for its response and said both nations’ security teams had been coordinating for weeks in preparation for the visit.

He confirmed that the King and Queen had privately reached out to President Trump and the First Lady following the incident, and stressed that both sides were confident in the updated safety measures now in place.

With the operational tweaks agreed, officials say the focus has shifted back to the diplomatic agenda — and ensuring the State Visit begins smoothly when the royal couple arrive in Washington tomorrow.

Despite the shooting, Trump is confident that the King and Queen will still travel to the US.

Speaking to Fox, he said: “He’s coming, and we’re going to have a great time.

“He’s really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative.”
