The No. 1 overall pick of this year’s NBA draft, Victor Wembanyama, bounced back after a disappointing summer league debut to score 27 points, grab 12 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots in a losing effort. Wembanyama significantly improved his performance compared to his debut, where he only managed to score 9 points on 2-13 shooting, secure 8 rebounds, and block 5 shots.
In the game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Wembanyama appeared much more engaged in the team’s offense and was actively securing offensive rebounds, an aspect that was lacking in his previous game. However, the player failed to impress the NBA community with his performance as they placed blame on his team’s loss, particularly pointing out the five free throws Wembanyama missed during the game.
Jay King of The Athletic referred to Wembanyama as a “malnourished Andre Drummond“ and criticized him for his crucial missed free throws. King started by acknowledging Wembanyama’s improved performance, saying, “Yes, Victor Wembanyama had a much better game today.” King prefaced before saying, “He still missed five free throws in a game his team lost by, you guessed it, five points. He’s been advertised as the best prospect of a generation but all I see is malnourished Andre Drummond.”

Twitter slams Victor Wembanyama’s performance in summer league
Despite the Frenchman’s stellar outfield performance, where he displayed moments of dominance in the game, it failed to impress the fans, who expressed their opinions on Twitter. Some of the reactions are compiled here.
It will be interesting to see if Wemby continues to play more games in the summer league or if he decides to rest, considering he is coming off a full season in the French League. If he does play, it’s going to be enjoyable watching the Wemby show, especially after what we witnessed against Portland.
