Episode 1 of Candy on Hulu pulls viewers in with the bizarre things that Candy Montgomery (portrayed by Jessica Biel) did throughout the day on Friday, June 13, 1980. It also gives a picture of Betty Gore’s (portrayed by Melanie Lynskey) life from the day she died. However, the true crime episode only hints at what happened to Betty Gore in Wylie, Texas, in 1980.
Candy Montgomery is a ‘good little tree’ in ‘Candy’ on Hulu Episode 1
Candy on Hulu Episode 1 begins with Candy’s “story” about a “good little tree.” She practiced the story with her husband, Pat Montgomery (Timothy Simons), the night before Betty’s death. The tree did everything right, but a woodcutter chopped the tree down anyway. However, it was cut into beams that she made into Jesus’ cross. The moral of the story is that although things look bleak, they work out in the end.
The next day, Candy and Pat discuss keeping Betty’s daughter, Christina (Antonella Rose), another night so they can see The Empire Strikes Back together. Both Christina and Becky (Aven Lotz) squeal with excitement. When Candy calls Betty to make the arrangements, Betty is annoyed but agrees.
Candy decides to stop by Betty’s house around 10 a.m. instead of noon as they agreed upon because it worked better for her schedule. At 11 a.m., she’s still not back at the church. Instead, Candy returns to her home at 11, soaked in blood. While the pageant goes on at Vacation Bible School, Candy washes her clothes and cleans herself up. When she gets back to the church, she gives an alibi to the other women, that she spent time talking to Betty. She went to Target, but her watch stopped working, so she never went into the store.

She calls Pat at work and runs down how crazy her day was, repeating the odd alibi, true to the real-life Candy Montgomery story. Candy also asks him if he knows where Allan Gore (Pablo Schreiber) is working that day. Candy takes the girls to swim lessons and then watches the girls play in the yard while her friend talks. She had stopped by to borrow a table to visit with the in-laws but noticed that Candy didn’t seem like herself.
Later, Candy meets her husband and takes the kids to see The Empire Strikes Back at 5:15 p.m. On the way out of the theater, Candy pukes, and the family heads home.

Meanwhile, in Candy Episode 1, Betty woke up to a screaming baby on Friday the thirteenth, while her husband, Allan Gore, took the dogs out. He went about his morning routine while Betty cared for the still screaming baby. When the married couple finally speaks to each other, Betty asks her husband why he has to go away on a business trip over a weekend.
Betty’s worried that she might be pregnant again. He appeases her by talking about their upcoming trip to Switzerland. After her husband leaves, she tries to put the baby down for a nap, but she cries more, so Betty runs the vacuum and washing machine.
After Candy visits, Betty, viewers notice a blood spot on the porch when a young girl rings Betty’s doorbell looking for her friend, Christina. The dogs beg to come inside, and there’s no sign of Betty.

Meanwhile, in St. Paul, Minnesota, viewers get a flash of Allan taking out traveler’s checks to head to Switzerland on a second honeymoon with Betty. However, he hasn’t heard from his wife all day in Candy on Hulu Episode 1. Later, at 7:00 p.m., he tries to get through to Betty in Wylie, Texas. He again doesn’t reach her and begins to worry.
After the movie, Allan calls Candy from St. Paul and asks how Betty seemed when she saw her. Candy mentions twice that Christina is staying another night and then insists he talk to his daughter. Candy offers to go to the house, but Allan declines. When Pat Montgomery asks what the call was about, Candy says Allan can’t get ahold of Betty. Then she reiterates her story about Target and the stopped watch.
Later, Allan calls a neighbor, Richard (Adam Bartley), to pop in at Betty’s house. Allan worries about his wife while sitting with his business partner at dinner at 9:00 p.m. When he calls Richard back, the neighbor says that no one answered the door and her car is missing. Allan calls the hospital and the police after he gets off the phone with Richard.

At 11:30 p.m., Allan calls Candy and Richard again. Richard heads over to the house again and realizes that the car is still there. Allan insists that Richard break into the house. Richard runs into Jerry (Bruce McKinnon) when he gets to the house. Jerry’s wife, Ruth, insisted he brings a gun. The two men walk in through the garage. Lester arrives to help. The men worry because the car is still there and the lights are all on in the house.
Richard finds the door unlocked, and all three men enter the house. They find blood in the bathroom and the baby alive but crying. Jerry and Lester open the utility room door and see a gruesome scene — Betty is dead. Jerry tells Allan that he believes Betty was shot, but the baby is OK.
As Candy sits in her son’s room, she hears the phone. Allan called Candy to tell her that Betty was dead. Allan says that Betty was shot with a gun, and Candy seems relieved. However, the camera pans to a bloody scene and an ax.
Candy premieres on Hulu Monday, May 9, with the release of only the first episode at 9 p.m. PT/midnight ET. The remaining four Candy episodes drop every day following the premiere, with the finale dropping on Friday, May 13.
