HBO’s latest Sunday night offering, Lanterns, presents a gritty, down-to-earth adaptation of DC’s celebrated Green Lantern comics. The Green Lanterns function akin to cosmic law enforcement officers, each responsible for different sectors across the universe. Their formidable abilities stem from their rings, which enable them to manifest anything they can imagine almost instantaneously.
In the series, Kyle Chandler steps into the role of Hal Jordan, Earth’s original Green Lantern, renowned for his exceptional bravery. Joining him is Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, a former marine and sniper who has been essentially preparing all his life to one day succeed Hal. As Hal ages, the Guardians instruct him to mentor John as his successor. However, Hal is reluctant to embrace this directive, often challenging the young recruit at every possible opportunity.
The premiere episode of Lanterns follows Hal and John as they unravel a perplexing murder case set deep in the heart of America. A puzzling incident sees a group of undercover aliens being shot at a high school football game in Rushville, Nebraska. As Hal and John delve deeper into the mystery, the case grows increasingly convoluted with each revelation.
The first episode of Lanterns concludes with a dramatic leap to the year 2026. In this future setting, an older John returns to Rushville, only to discover that Hal Jordan has been murdered.
