Brace for Impact: Severe Storms Threaten Chicago with High Winds, Hail, and Tornadoes on Monday

CHICAGO — Residents of the Chicago area should brace for potentially severe weather conditions on Monday, as forecasters predict storms could hit the region.

According to weather experts, the area faces a Level 2 risk for severe storms, indicating a moderate threat.

The day began with some storm activity passing through the region on Monday morning.

In Wheaton, city officials report that crews are actively dealing with multiple incidents of downed trees and power lines due to powerful winds. Additionally, several neighborhoods are currently experiencing power outages.

Another wave of storms, considered to be the primary severe threat, is anticipated to occur between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. Weather expert Butler notes that strong winds could blow through the area even before the storms arrive, from noon to 4 p.m.

The main concerns from the storm include high winds, but hail and tornadoes are possible.

Wind gusts over 60 mph are possible and could result in power outages. Use caution while driving, officials said.

There is a Ground Stop for departures to Chicago O’Hare International Airport due to thunderstorms until 8:45 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said. There is a 30-60% chance of extension.

There is also Ground Delay at O’Hare until about 3 a.m. Tuesday due to thunderstorms. Delays are averaging 210 minutes.

As of 7:09 p.m. Monday, 288 flights have been canceled at O’Hare. Just 12 flights have been canceled at Chicago Midway International Airport, with delays averaging 45 minutes.

There is a Flood Warning for Kane and Kendall counties until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

There is a Flood Warning for McHenry County until 1 p.m. Thursday.

There is a Flood Watch until 7 p.m. Saturday for LaSalle County.

There is a Flood Warning for Lake (Illinois) and Kenosha counties until 7 a.m. Sunday.
