CHICAGO (WLS) — On Monday, a poignant award ceremony unfolded as the Chicago Police Department braced to lay one officer to rest and continued to vigil over another who remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Superintendent Larry Snelling took the opportunity to honor these officers, as well as the award recipients, expressing gratitude for the dedicated service of all those in uniform.

Each year, hundreds of Chicago police officers gather at the Hyatt Regency’s grand ballroom to celebrate the bravery and commitment of their peers. This year’s event recognized numerous officers for their courageous acts while on duty.

“These officers go above and beyond their call of duty, responding at any hour of the day or night, and confronting any situation,” remarked Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The ceremony was marked by a somber tone, as attendees paused for a moment of silence to remember Officer John Bartholomew, who tragically lost his life while escorting a suspect at Swedish Hospital nine days ago. His partner, 58-year-old Nelson Crespo, was publicly named for the first time during the event and remains critically injured.

“He’s gotten better. He’s had some signs of improvement. But he’s not out of the water yet. He’s still fighting for this life. His injuries were substantial,” Snelling said.

Snelling called on the justice system that allowed suspect Alphanso Talley to remain free even after his electronic monitoring device went offline to do better.

“When we focus more on freeing the person who committed the violent act, what are we saying to the person who was victimized by that violent act? We have to start thinking more about the people who are victimized,” Snelling said.

Also honored was Officer Krystal Rivera, who was accidentally shot and killed by her partner as they were pursuing a suspect in June of 2025.

Visitation for Officer Bartholomew is set for this coming Thursday. He will be buried following a memorial service Friday at St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church in Edgewater.
