The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially requested that Florida authorities hand over a Bangladeshi national suspected of murdering his sister-in-law. This suspect, who had previously faced deportation under the Trump administration, reentered the U.S. illegally and was later released under the Biden administration.
Revealing the course of action, DHS informed News Media that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer against the suspect, Akbor Miah. Miah, who reportedly went by the alias Shahidul Islam, is wanted for federal custody following the conclusion of his state-level criminal proceedings.
According to officials at DHS, Miah initially entered the United States in 2016 during the Obama era. ICE detained him in February 2018, which led to an immigration judge issuing a final deportation order later that year.
Subsequently deported back to Bangladesh in January 2019 during the Trump administration, Miah illegally returned to the U.S.—a serious federal crime. Despite this, he was released into the country by the Biden administration as of March 19, 2022, officials reported.
Authorities found Monica Islam fatally shot in Lake County, Florida, in May 2025, according to investigative reports. Her brother-in-law, Akbor Miah, now faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with her death. (DOJ)
DHS said ICE lodged the detainer requesting Florida officials transfer Miah into federal custody after his state criminal proceedings conclude so he can face immigration enforcement following any sentence imposed in the murder case.
According to authorities, Monica Islam disappeared after leaving the Eustis convenience store where she worked alongside Miah, her brother-in-law, on May 2, 2025. Hours later, she was found dead from a gunshot wound along a road in Mount Dora.
Investigators recovered Monica Islam’s DNA from Miah’s vehicle, along with a bullet lodged in the passenger-side door and evidence the passenger window had been shattered, prosecutors said.

Officials claim Miah fled to New York after the killing before he was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited back to Florida, where he faces a first-degree murder charge.
“This illegal alien from Bangladesh has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his own sister-in-law in Florida,” DHS acting assistant secretary Lauren Bis told News Media. “He then thought he could evade justice by fleeing to the sanctuary state of New York. Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien has been arrested and is off our streets. ICE has lodged a detainer so he can never be loose in our country again.”
News Media previously reported that a Lake County grand jury indicted Miah on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder and that prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
State Attorney Bill Gladson said investigators uncovered evidence that Miah conducted numerous suspicious internet searches on the morning of the killing.

Prosecutors also allege he rented a vehicle and drove to New York after the shooting before authorities tracked him down through a joint effort involving local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
