On Wednesday, the Department of Transportation unveiled new renderings that breathe fresh life into the Park Avenue corridor, envisioning a more pedestrian-friendly environment along this vibrant stretch.

Covering an 11-block expanse from East 46th to East 57th streets, two proposed designs illustrate a transformed boulevard featuring expanded medians, broader sidewalks, and lush greenery, aiming to enhance the experience for those on foot.

Reflecting on its historical roots, City Comptroller Mark Levine shared a nostalgic glimpse into the past. “Park Ave. earned its name because, a century ago, it boasted an actual park in the median,” Levine noted in a post on X, accompanied by a vintage photograph showcasing the avenue’s former expansive medians before they were narrowed to accommodate increasing traffic.
