Authorities believe the crash happened when a black Jeep SUV, traveling west on Ida B. Wells Drive, ignored a traffic signal and collided with a marked police squad car that was moving south on Wabash Avenue.
The SUV’s driver, a 26-year-old man, attempted to escape the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers and taken into custody. He was transported to Northwestern Hospital with a head laceration but is reportedly in good condition.
Inside the SUV were two passengers. A 26-year-old woman, who sustained minor injuries, was also taken to Northwestern Hospital and is in stable condition. Another passenger, a 25-year-old woman, declined medical attention at the scene.
ABC7 was on the scene when firefighters cut out the squad car’s door in order to remove one of the police officers, who appeared to have been pinned inside of the vehicle.
Firefighters put the officer onto a stretcher and transported them to a hospital.
Police said both officers were transported to a local hospital in good condition.
Charges are pending, and area detectives are investigating.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
