David Caruso, known for his role in CSI: Miami, was spotted in Sherman Oaks, California on Monday, marking a rare public appearance since he retired from acting 13 years ago.

The 70-year-old former actor, who was once known for his sharp, polished look as Lieutenant Horatio Caine on the popular CSI series, now presents a more relaxed and unkempt appearance. The show was a hit on CBS, running for 10 seasons from 2002 to 2012.

During his outing, Caruso donned a gray CBGB T-shirt paired with a beige fedora, which sat atop his signature red hair, as he navigated around his parked SUV.

His laid-back ensemble was rounded off with gray sweatpants, which slipped down slightly as he moved about.

This public appearance follows recent speculation by sources who suggested to Radar Online about why the former TV star has maintained a low profile over the past decade.

‘David still gets invited to all sorts of Hollywood things, but he turns everything down,’ the insider claimed. ‘A lot of people think it’s because he doesn’t want to deal with judgment about his weight.

‘Everyone in Hollywood is taking Ozempic to lose 10lbs, but David legitimately needs to lose 50lbs. Getting some help from a doctor seems like a good idea.’

The source claimed that Caruso has ‘completely let his health go.’

‘This is a guy who used to run for miles and barely break a sweat. Now he practically shuffles.’

After retiring from show business in 2012, the Golden Globe winner reinvented himself as an art dealer and opened Caruso Art in Westlake Village, California but it permanently closed last year.

Back in 2009-2011, Caruso was earning $375,000/per episode to portray Caine in CSI: Miami.

But it was abruptly cancelled due to low ratings and an expanding budget.

‘I was sad because we did not get a chance to say goodbye to the fans or to each other,’ his former castmate Eva LaRue, who played Detective Natalia Boa Vista, told Digital Spy in 2012.

‘I think we all feel like the character development would have been important to us actors but the nature of the show did not allow for it.

‘There was not enough time because of the elaborate procedural scenes,’ she said.

The Hill Street Blues alum always regretted quitting his leading role as Detective John Kelly in ABC crime drama NYPD Blue in 1994 after only one season due to his so-called diva demands for a $100,000/per episode salary and other amenities.

‘I had nine years of unemployment to clarify that,’ Caruso told CNN in 2002. ‘A lot was happening in those days, very quickly. Television, as you know, can kind of jettison you into a whole new world.

‘So too much was happening. Now as a different time, and I’m armed with different information.’

NYPD Blue showrunner Steven Bochco blasted the ‘cancerous malcontent’ in his 2016 memoir, Truth Is a Total Defense, claiming he could be ‘volatile, moody or sullen’ to cast and crew ‘depending on the day.’

Caruso was promptly replaced by Jimmy Smits, who made his debut as Senior Detective Bobby Simone in season two of the popular police procedural.

‘Young actors sometimes do very dumb things. I was no exception,’ the Emmy nominee told THR in response.
