Multiple People Shot After Alabama’s Magic City Classic Game

A shooting broke out in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night as the Magic City Classic festivities came to an end, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

The gunfire was reported at about 7:50 p.m. near Legion Field, shortly after the annual HBCU football rivalry game concluded, AL.com reported.

The full number of victims has not been released, but the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed to the outlet that at least one person died.

Public safety radio traffic indicated that at least two other people suffered critical injuries, while a third person was treated for minor injuries.

The Magic City Classic, the nation’s largest historically Black college and university football event, had just concluded at the stadium. The game featured Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University.

Following the shooting, officials halted tailgating and directed people to leave the area around Legion Field.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said investigators had not determined what prompted the violence.

“There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration,” Woodfin said.

He added, “But hear me clearly: We refuse to let fear shake the spirit of this community. Justice will be served to those who brought harm to those at one of our most treasured events.”

Woodfin described the Magic City Classic as an event grounded in HBCU tradition and family. “Tonight, as a family, we grieve,” he said.

“We wrap our arms around neighbors who are dealing with unimaginable pain right now. And just like family, we will stand united as we overcome this tragic night,” the mayor said.

“While this crime is under an active investigation, we will not let up until we achieve swift justice for this senseless violence.”
