The world of outlaw country music mourns the loss of its iconic figure and trailblazing songwriter, David Allan Coe, who has passed away at the age of 86.
Coe’s passing was confirmed by his representative to the Music Universe, stating that he died in an intensive care unit around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
“David was a musical treasure,” the representative noted. “Even as his health waned, he cherished all of his fans.”

At this time, the specific cause of death has not been disclosed.
Known for his hit “Longhaired Redneck,” Coe had faced health challenges over the past few years. In 2021, he was hospitalized due to complications from COVID-19, and he had previously undergone knee replacement surgery in 2019.
Coe leaves behind his wife Kimberly Hastings Coe, son Tyler Mahan Coe and daughter Tanya Coe.
Despite never breaking through on mainstream radio, Coe became a pillar of the outlaw country movement after arriving in Nashville from Ohio in 1967, releasing 42 studio albums over a career spanning nearly six decades.
