Sheriff Updates Nancy Guthrie Case 9 Months After Kidnapping

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that investigators remain focused on DNA analysis as they work with the Nancy Guthrie Task Force to move the missing-person investigation forward.

“Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists to see what more could be done to advance this case,” the department said in a post on X. “A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all our partners to solve this case.”

The agency also urged the public to share any information, emphasizing that no detail is insignificant.

“Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation,” the department said.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Feb. 1.

The 84-year-old was last seen shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, after a relative dropped her off at her residence in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

Investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest, even though a masked man was captured on Guthrie’s Ring doorbell camera.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in the days after the disappearance that Guthrie had been taken. During a news briefing, he told reporters, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

Authorities released two ransom notes connected to the kidnapping in July.

The first note, sent Feb. 2, claimed Guthrie was unharmed and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency in exchange for her release.

A second note, sent four days later on Feb. 6, stated that Guthrie had died soon after being kidnapped.

When the notes were made public in late July, authorities said they featured a unique writing style. Investigators asked anyone who recognized the writing patterns to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.

Investigators also said late last month that they had received information about a possible new ransom note tied to Guthrie’s disappearance.

“The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the sheriff’s department wrote in an X post in late September.

“Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility.”
