Forest Service Workers Held Hostage at Gunpoint in Shocking Trailer Standoff

0

In a harrowing incident deep within California’s wilderness, two Forest Service employees found themselves held at gunpoint for almost 15 hours by a father-son duo. This dramatic ordeal unfolded in a secluded trailer, leaving the workers trapped and at the mercy of their captors, according to prosecutors.

The employees, whose identities have not been disclosed, were performing routine fieldwork in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest when the ambush occurred on Thursday. Their peaceful day quickly turned into a nightmare as they were confronted by their captors.

Facing serious federal kidnapping charges are Joseph Henrichsen, 49, alongside his 23-year-old son, Phoenix. The duo allegedly held the workers hostage near the scenic yet isolated Gumboot Lake area, intensifying the gravity of the situation.

Unsettling details emerged as the father reportedly called law enforcement himself, admitting to having the two employees restrained with zip ties and held at gunpoint. He ominously mentioned that he was armed and ready to act against any intervention, prosecutors revealed.

His demands included communication with the FBI, though authorities are still working to uncover the true motive behind these events as the investigation continues. The perplexing nature of the abductions has left many questions unanswered.

The disturbing call triggered a massive hostage standoff involving local, state and federal agencies, with negotiations dragging on for nearly 15 hours before the suspects finally surrendered.

The victims were evaluated following their rescue in the early hours of Friday and returned home after officials found no reported injuries.

‘Crisis situations like this don’t often result in everyone leaving the scene safely,’ FBI Sacramento acting Special Agent in Charge Brian Tosh said. ‘Both are resting and will need some time to process this experience.’

Authorities first learned of the abductions just before 11am when Joseph called them from one of the victim’s phones, according to Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department Chief Jeremiah LaRue.

During the call, he allegedly declared that he had ‘taken two fed employees hostage from the Forest Service’ and was holding them at gunpoint, before demanding to speak with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

He added that one of the victims was ‘zip-tied’ with their hands ‘behind their [expletive] back’ and that he had ‘live rounds ready to [expletive] anyone who [expletives] with me,’ according to prosecutors.

Sheriff’s deputies and the department’s special response team rushed to the scene around noon and immediately deployed drones over the rural area. Within 20 minutes, they had contacted the FBI’s Sacramento field office.

The FBI deployed agents from its Redding office, a crisis negotiation team and SWAT operators, along with a hostage rescue team and additional assets from Quantico, Virginia, which were flown in aboard a Boeing 757.

Shasta County alone sent 30 sworn and civilian personnel to the scene, including its SWAT team, sniper unit, hostage negotiators, bomb squad and drone operators, according to Sheriff Michael Johnson.

Special Agent Tosh said the national tactical team was brought in as a precaution because any standoff carries the risk of escalating, even with a secure perimeter surrounding the trailer.

Drones helped authorities pinpoint the trailer where the victims were being held hidden inside a rugged campground surrounded by dense woods at around 1pm.

Investigators said Joseph was carrying an AR-15-style rifle and knives when he surrendered, and he also claimed to have grenades on him

Nearly 30 minutes later, retired Palo Alto resident Henry Magnuski, 81, was stopped by officers in full tactical gear as he drove to his seasonal cabin near Picayune Lake, according to SF Gate.

‘At first, I thought it was a training exercise or something like that,’ he told the outlet.

He was asked to drive authorities farther up the road, where he learned that two people were being held hostage and that the one-way route into the area would be closed.

During the press briefing, Sheriff Johnson explained that the terrain posed a challenge, as the area was accessible only by a narrow, single-lane road that restricted access for emergency resources.

‘I was totally amazed by this event because that area is really the backwoods, remote, far away,’ Magnuski said. ‘Cars were going to the barricades every five minutes. It was incredible.’

Negotiations officially began after 4pm Thursday, but the two federal employees were not released until 1.50am Friday morning – spending more than 12 hours held at gunpoint.

‘It was a large incident and I’d like to tell you it’s probably the smoothest thing I’ve seen in years,’ Sheriff LaRue said.

The first employee was released around 1.35am, with the second freed about 15 minutes later. Joseph and his son Phoenix surrendered to authorities at 2.30am, roughly 40 minutes after the rescues.

Investigators said Joseph was carrying an AR-15-style rifle and knives when he surrendered, and he also claimed to have grenades on him, according to Tosh.

A motive remains under investigation, as Joseph stopped communicating with authorities at some point during the standoff.

US Attorney Eric Grant said both men would face charges of kidnapping federal employees and expressed confidence that a US magistrate judge would sign off on the charges.

If convicted, the suspects face a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

In a statement released after Thursday’s dramatic incident, US Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz said: ‘I am grateful beyond words that both of our Forest Service employees are home safe.

‘Our focus now is simple: The well-being of our employees and their families. Their well-being continues to be our highest priority.’

It has since emerged that Joseph, who also went by the name Christopher Perry, was previously accused of a hate crime in Washington state after allegedly harassing landlords of Russian and Ukrainian descent, according to a 2022 report by the Bellingham Herald.

Court records revealed that he allegedly threw fireworks onto their property, left homemade handcuffs outside and left a written note on their front door – one side featuring a drawing of a penis and the other reading, ‘Assassinate Vlad Putin.’

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said Joseph was experiencing a ‘spiraling mental health condition,’ The Herald reported. His case was eventually dismissed when officials were unable to place him in a state psychiatric facility for treatment.

According to a 2022 Bellingham Herald article, one of Joseph’s family members said his behavior began to unravel about a year before his arrest and spiraled after the death of his ex-wife in August 2021.

Chicago Faces Severe Air Quality Alert as Canadian Wildfires Intensify Smoke Impact

CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago area continues to be under an Air Quality Alert this Saturday, as smoke drifts south from the ongoing wildfires in Canada.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

According to ABC7 meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, the air quality started off as “moderate” on Saturday morning. However, there is a possibility it might degrade to levels deemed “unhealthy for sensitive groups” due to increasing ozone levels.

Even though residents of Chicago are experiencing brief relief from the thick smoke, Martinez advises that wind patterns are expected to blow windy conditions back into the city by Saturday afternoon.

The prediction is for the smoky haze to return to Chicago around 5 p.m. or by sunset, bringing renewed air quality concerns.

Martinez points out that while the air quality may be labeled “unhealthy,” the intensity of the smoke is not expected to reach the levels observed on Thursday.

Smoke will linger into Sunday.

Storms are forecast to bring rain to Chicago from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Most of the Chicago area, north and west suburbs are under a Level 1 risk for severe weather. Southern suburbs and northwest Indiana are under a Level 2.

Stan’s Donut Run is expected to go on Saturday after the city saw many events canceled due to the “hazardous” air quality.

Organizers at the Tacos y Tamales festival in Pilsen say they are keeping a close eye on weather conditions throughout the weekend.

However, opening day for Roscoe Village Burger Fest was postponed until Saturday because of the wildfire smoke.

The National Weather Service extended the alert until Monday for parts of northwest Indiana.

Martinez said wind direction changes on Monday, which could help with air quality.

Trump criticizes Canada

Hundreds of wildfires are burning in Canada, including about 190 in northern Ontario, Premier Doug Ford said at a news conference. Flames destroyed the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation community, and 10 northern Ontario communities have been evacuated or were being evacuated, with more possible.

The increase of fire in vast Canadian forests has largely been blamed on climate change.

In response to the smoke, U.S. President Donald Trump made a social media post Friday that blamed Canada for its forest management and threatened additional tariffs on Canada.

The Canadian government didn’t initially respond to questions about Trump’s comments.

Asked about a Michigan lawmaker’s criticism about the smoke, Ford noted Canada has helped the U.S. fight fires in the past.

“If there’s some politicians out there chirping away, maybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help, because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends and that’s what you’re supposed to do,” Ford said.

Health impact

Health experts warned that wildfire smoke contains harmful pollutants.

Dr. Soledad Cortina, a cornea specialist with the Illinois Society for Eye Physicians and Surgeons and University of Illinois Chicago Department of Ophthalmology, said the tiny particles in the smoke could have lasting health effects.

“Some of the components of wildfire are similar to those of like smoke and tobacco, and we know how damaging that is to the eyes and certain chronic conditions,” said Dr. Cortina.

Patricia Ward, the Head Scientist at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, said that weather patterns like these could continue to happen in the future.

“I think we are seeing that more and more across the U.S., North America, in general and around the world in other places too. The expectation is this climate change is going to continue to contribute more extreme weather,” Ward said.

Experts also cautioned that poor air quality can affect people indoors. HVAC technicians are encouraging homeowners to inspect their air filters as smoke and airborne particles remain a concern.

“Even if the filter looks white – nice, white and clean, if you hold it up to a light and you can’t see the light through it, that means that it’s clogged up,” said Karol Derezinski, a technician with Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning.

AAA also recommends using a vehicle’s air conditioning in recirculate mode to reduce smoke exposure inside a car by limiting the amount of outside air entering the cabin.

The smoke and haze blanketing the Chicago area caused low visibility and was expected to create some delays at O’Hare airport.

Health experts said the air is unhealthy for everyone to breathe and are encouraging people to avoid or limit time outdoors until the air quality gets better.

“If you can see it, and you can smell it, you’re breathing it in…so recommendations right now: if you don’t have to go out, then stay home,” Dr. Juanita Mora of the American Lung Association, said.

Doctors also recommend that people stay hydrated, which can help the respiratory system in these smoky conditions.

  • Social media commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has sparked reactions online after revealing a high-stakes bet he made with his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over Argentina’s chances of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to conclude on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with defending champions Argentina facing Spain in the final.

FedEx Driver Seeks New Trial in Athena Strand Case

    0

Convicted murderer Tanner Horner, a former FedEx driver, is calling for a retrial after being found guilty of killing seven-year-old Athena Strand. Horner argues that pervasive ‘media coverage’ prevented a fair trial from taking place.

The 34-year-old submitted a motion for a new hearing on June 4, shortly after receiving the death penalty through lethal injection. Horner was convicted of abducting young Athena from her home, subsequently strangling her, and abandoning her remains in a river in November 2022.

Attorney Thea Posel contends that extensive media exposure created an atmosphere that deterred key witnesses. Specifically, five defense witnesses withdrew their testimony due to intimidation, as reported by The Dallas Morning News.

The core of their legal motion accuses the incessant media coverage of sparking social media outrage, which allegedly resulted in threats against the potential witnesses.

The defense argues that the court’s precautions were inadequate in protecting against the intense public scrutiny and inherent hostility that overshadowed the trial and the defense’s efforts.

Judge George Gallagher, who oversaw the murder trial, issued a protective order blocking anyone involved from discussing Horner’s bid for a new hearing.

The order does not mean Horner’s claims have been accepted. It instead keeps key sealed exhibits filed with the motion under wraps while the court weighs his team’s request.

It states that releasing documents containing sensitive information could jeopardize the case’s integrity, compromise the privacy and security of those involved and impact Horner’s right to a retrial if granted.

‘This is a procedure that happens not only in this case but in almost all cases, period,’ Wise County District Attorney James Stainton said in a statement to the outlet.

Three weeks later, Stainton and state prosecutor Jeffrey Shell pushed back with a 12-page response to the judge’s procedural order, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

In the June 23 filing, Shell argued that Horner’s motion should be denied because no rule bars media coverage of criminal trials.

Prosecutors also stated that the trial court had no duty to ‘inquire into the effects of the intensive media coverage and public attention on the jury.’

Horner’s bid for another trial now rests with Judge Gallagher, who is expected to rule on the request in the coming days, a court spokesperson told the outlet.

Derek Adame, a Denton County criminal defense attorney and certified death penalty lawyer not involved in the case, reiterated that new trial motions are common, especially in death penalty cases.

‘Every time you’re going to make a motion for new trial, absolutely, because it is a tool in the tool bag,’ Adame told the Star-Telegram.

‘And if it works, if you’re granted a new trial, well, that’s better than an appeal because you get to start the whole thing over,’ he added.

Horner’s team has also launched an appeal with the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the state’s highest criminal court, which is required to review all death penalty cases under Texas law.

Adame told the outlet that attorneys will often request a new trial despite having little basis for the motion, fully expecting it to be denied.

‘In my experience, it’s pretty rare that a motion for new trial gets granted,’ he said.

‘The bar is pretty high. You basically have to show, you have to prove that there now exists evidence, or evidence that you did not have before during the trial. So something new has come to light.’

He said Horner’s claim of excessive media coverage alone is unlikely to secure a new trial, as high-profile cases routinely attract public attention.

But he said the defense could have a stronger argument if it proves witnesses were scared off and had evidence that may have altered the outcome, according to the outlet.

Adame added that another reason for filing the request is to lay the groundwork for future appeals. Even if it’s denied, the motion puts key arguments into the court record and gives the defense more to build on.

‘You want to build a good enough record so that maybe some appellate court years from now says, “Hey, you know what? You guys were right” and rules in your favor,’ Adame said.

‘So that’s what you want to do. You want to leave as many doors open as you possibly can,’ he added.

Horner’s initial trial was moved to Tarrant County in September 2024 after a judge found the case had attracted significant attention on social media in Wise County.

Horner pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping just hours before he was due to stand trial on April 7.

The convicted killer was making a delivery at Athena’s family home in Paradise, Texas, just weeks before Christmas 2022 when he lured her into his FedEx truck.

He was delivering a package that contained her Christmas gift – a set of Barbie dolls. Athena fought for her life in the back of his truck before she was killed.

Investigators tracked the package to Horner and uncovered video showing him shutting the door of his vehicle with Athena inside, leading to his arrest on December 2, 2022.

Prosecutors presented incredibly disturbing audio and video evidence during the trial that showed the sexual abuse Athena endured before she was murdered and dumped in the Trinity River.

It showed the tiny girl, wide-eyed and confused, standing behind the hulking 6ft-tall Horner in the driver’s seat.

‘Are you a kidnapper?’ Athena asked through her tears and pleas to go home. ‘Why are you doing this?’

Horner replied: ‘Because you are pretty. You know that?’

Her body was found around nine miles away from her home, two days later.

Horner’s defense team introduced expert testimony about his autism diagnosis, lead exposure and troubled childhood as they urged jurors to spare him the death penalty and sentence him to life without parole.

The jury took less than three hours to deliver a death sentence, unanimously finding Horner would remain a danger to society and that mitigating circumstances did not outweigh the punishment.

Horner remains on death row at the Allan B Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas.

Melrose Resident Arrested: Shocking Tire Slashing Incident

    0

    Staff Report

MELROSE, Fla. – Austin Palmer, 36, finds himself behind bars following a series of destructive acts that targeted his neighbors’ vehicles, culminating in the slashing of tires and the shattering of windshields. Palmer, who had previously been banned from setting foot on the victims’ property, now faces serious legal consequences.

The chaotic scene unfolded on July 11, when the victims returned to their Melrose residence only to discover extensive damage. One car’s windshield had been completely destroyed, and three of its brand-new tires were rendered unusable. A second vehicle also suffered with three slashed tires. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy, upon investigating, was presented with crucial surveillance footage. The video, stark and undeniable, depicted Palmer vandalizing both cars. Notably, this occurred just days after he had been legally barred from the premises on July 6.

In the footage, Palmer can be seen wielding an axe to mercilessly attack the tires while employing a brick to demolish the windshield. After executing these acts, he was observed leaving the enclosed property, ominously carrying both the brick and axe.

Palmer’s restriction from the property, initiated on July 6, included an unusual incident where he was caught with an axe. When questioned by law enforcement, Palmer allegedly described the axe as nothing more than “a sign of friendship from the Old Statement,” offering a glimpse into his mindset during the time of the ban.

The damage to the vehicles was estimated at over $2,600.

Palmer has been charged with armed burglary, felony property damage, trespassing while armed with a dangerous weapon, and misdemeanor property damage. He has no criminal convictions, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $225,000 and ordered a mental health evaluation.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mitch Landrieu Critiques Trump’s Swamp-Like Tendencies

    0

On a recent segment of CNN’s “The Source,” Mitch Landrieu, who previously served as the Mayor of New Orleans, delivered a pointed critique of former President Donald Trump, accusing him of embodying the very things he once vowed to dismantle.

During the interview, Landrieu remarked, “We haven’t witnessed a presidency that parallels the actions and scale of Donald Trump’s. When he launched his campaign, there were promises to ‘drain the swamp,’ yet he seems to have become one with it. Trump’s focus appears to be on ‘bombs, ballrooms, and ballots,’ all ensnared in a web of chaos and what’s perceived as an aura of corruption. His entanglements with businesses he’s supposed to regulate demonstrate a clear conflict of interest. This is merely scratching the surface of what’s publicly visible. The unseen aspects might be even more concerning.”

Landrieu continued to emphasize the repercussions of such corruption, stressing, “Corruption isn’t just a political buzzword; it’s a real issue that elevates expenses for everyday Americans. People expect the President’s attention to be on their immediate concerns. This disconnect is why they’re frustrated—events like last night’s ‘nothing burger’ exacerbate these feelings. There’s a growing perception that he’s lost his grip, focusing on issues misaligned with public priorities. Americans aren’t consumed by thoughts of war with Iran; they’re worried about practical matters like rising food, gas, and housing costs—issues he seems indifferent to. His chances in the next election aren’t threatened by Georgia’s alleged electoral issues but by his growing disconnect from what truly matters to the electorate.”
