DCLM Daily Manna 18 July 2026 — Christian Persecution

DCLM Daily Manna 18 July 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Christian Persecution

TOPIC: Christian Persecution (DCLM Daily Manna 18 July 2026)

KEY VERSE: And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles – Acts 8:1)

TEXT: Acts 8:1-4 (KJV)

1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

On its website, Open Doors International, the Christian organisation, published its report on persecution of believers in 2024. The report showed that 4,476 Christians were murdered, 7,679 churches and Christian properties attacked and 4,744 Christians imprisoned across the globe. “In Open Doors’ World Watch List top 50 alone, 310 million Christians face very high or extreme levels of persecutions and discriminations for their faith”, the report said. Christian persecution is real in our world today.

The early Church also faced persecution as we read from today’s Bible passage. The horrible death of Stephen by public stoning in Acts 7 triggered a wave of serious persecutions led by Saul. While the church was mourning over the death of the young preacher, Saul “…made havok of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison” (Acts 8:3). The believers had no choice but to scatter and flee Jerusalem to safety. The good news though is that the scattering helped them to take the gospel to new locations.

Jesus warned the disciples to prepare for persecution in their journey of faith. He said, “These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service” (John 16:1,2). Persecution is normal in the Christian race, but the grace of God is also available to see us through to the end.

Since we may not be able to avoid persecution, what can we do? We must, like the early Church, develop effective survival strategies. These include prayerfulness, endurance, maintaining a joyful disposition and readiness to spread the gospel anywhere life takes us. We must also raise sound and committed disciples who are ready to labour anywhere and everywhere for the Master.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Sometimes God uses persecution as a tool for gospel propagation

Kentucky Governor Receives Inquiries About Mitch McConnell’s Health Status

0

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear revealed he received unsettling phone calls suggesting that Republican Senator Mitch McConnell had died prior to the release of a “proof of life” photo last week.

Governor Beshear, a Democrat, noted that he was contacted by several ‘agencies’ hinting at McConnell’s possible demise before the senator’s photo was made public.

Amid swirling rumors about his health, the 84-year-old McConnell posted an image holding a newspaper, addressing concerns after he had reportedly been ‘briefly unconscious’ from a fall. This photograph marked his first response following weeks of silence from his office regarding his hospitalization and absence from the Senate.

In light of these events, Beshear is now advocating for more transparency. He is urging McConnell to be forthright with the public about his capacity to fulfill his senatorial duties.

“An entire month had passed without any official communication from Senator McConnell, until the ‘proof of life’ photo emerged,” Beshear reflected during an interview with journalist Katie Couric.

‘In fact, I’d gotten two calls from different agencies – not state agencies – suggesting he’s passed.

He said that while McConnell is entitled to ‘a level of privacy’ about his health, he needs to be forthright with those he works for.

‘When you’ve been in a hospital for a month, and you’ve missed all the votes, which is your job, you owe your boss, like anybody else out there who works, an explanation of what’s been going on and when you’ll get back,’ Beshear said Thursday.

‘When you take on these jobs, when you represent the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, you give up some of that. That’s what comes with the territory.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to a spokesperson for Senator McConnell for comment.

The image showed McConnell sat up in a hospital bed beside his wife, former transportation secretary Elaine Chao, with the front of Sunday’s Washington Post sports section.

The photo sparked rampant speculation online with thousands of posts scrutinizing the image, including claims that the Sunday paper in McConnell’s hand is doctored.

The Washington Post published an analysis last night which found that the metadata on the photo – the digital footprint coded into the image – shows that it was indeed taken on Sunday.

An independent digital forensics expert also said that there is no evidence that the image is fake.

Viral posts amplifying claims the McConnell photo was doctored showed a zoomed-in picture of the paper in his hand which showed garbled text in the sports section.

But others cautioned that AI had been used to zoom in on the photo, and in trying to ‘upscale’ the image, the technology had simply generated random text.

McConnell was admitted to a hospital on the morning of June 14 following a medical emergency at his Washington, DC, home.

Paramedics responded to a report of an unconscious person believed to have suffered a ‘cardiac arrest,’ with a medic reporting ‘CPR in progress’ at the address.

The senator was not named on the call, and his office has instead claimed that he had a mild case of pneumonia and had not suffered a stroke or a heart attack.

McConnell said his doctors have told him he cannot return to the Senate floor yet, though he said he is still working with his staff on Kentucky business.

McConnell’s statement landed less than 24 hours after the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, 71, and days after Beshear publicly pressed for information on his condition.

Republican leaders are now short of votes on a floor where the margin was already thin, with Graham gone and McConnell absent.

No timeline has been given for the Kentucky senator’s return to Capitol Hill.

Speculation over McConnell’s health intensified after Trump loyalist Laura Loomer claimed an unnamed White House source told her he is ‘brain dead’ and ‘not coming back’ to work.

Rhapsody Of Realities 18 July 2026: The Power Of Impartation

Rhapsody Of Realities 18 July 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): The Power Of Impartation

TOPIC: The Power Of Impartation (Rhapsody of Realities 18 July 2026)

For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established – Romans 1:11

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

The Apostle Paul makes a remarkable statement in his letter to the Romans. He says, “…I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift…” (Romans 1:11). This reveals something vital: spiritual gifts can be imparted. This wasn’t a casual desire for Paul; it was a consciousness of divine ability. He knew that when he came to them, something would be transmitted. He goes further to say, “that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me” (Romans 1:12).

This means the impartation would take place through the working together of their faith; his faith and theirs. The things of the Spirit don’t happen by chance; they are activated by faith—conscious, active faith. Notice something else: Paul didn’t say, “When I come, we’ll pray and ask God to give you something.” No. He spoke from the standpoint of what had already been made available in Christ.

This is the same understanding we have today. For example, when we minister to people to receive the Holy Spirit, we don’t beg God. The Bible says, “…how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). Therefore, we minister with certainty and declare, “Be filled with the Holy Ghost,” because it’s already God’s will. Hallelujah!

The Bible also says, “Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands…” (1 Timothy 4:14). Furthermore, in 2 Timothy 1:6, Paul said, “…stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.” These show clearly that there’s a transmission of spiritual endowment. But notice the purpose as read in our opening scripture, “…to the end ye may be established.” Such impartations bring stability. They strengthen you and build you up in your walk with God.

Therefore, value moments of spiritual intimacy and impartation. When the Word is taught, when hands are laid on you, and when there’s an atmosphere of faith, open your spirit and respond with faith; that’s how you receive. Also, grow in your own consciousness of the Spirit. You’re not limited; you’re a channel of blessing. You can minister life, grace and spiritual endowments to others as you yield to the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for the ministry of the Holy Spirit in my life and the impartations I receive from your Word that strengthen and establish me in the faith. I walk in the consciousness of the power of the Holy Spirit at work in me, as a channel of blessing to others, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

1 Timothy 4:14 (KJV)
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Romans 1:11-12 (NET)
For I long to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, [12] that is, that we may be mutually comforted by one another’s faith, both yours and mine.

Trump Accuses Canada of Wildfire Smoke, Seeks US Compensation

0

President Donald Trump has launched a fresh criticism at Canada, blaming the northern neighbor for the thick wildfire smoke that’s been drifting across the United States. He suggested that the “countless expenses” of addressing this environmental issue would be tacked onto the existing tariffs on Canadian imports.

Thick plumes generated by hundreds of Canadian wildfires have shrouded wide stretches of the U.S., stretching from the Midwest to the Northeast, leading authorities to advise residents to remain indoors for their safety.

Trump, known for his contentious rapport with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, announced plans to contact the Canadian leader. His goal: to address what he deems an “utterly unacceptable” situation and to question the measures Canada intends to implement.

“We are holding Canada responsible for not properly maintaining their forests,” Trump expressed via a post on his Truth Social platform. “America is facing an invasion of polluted, filthy, and unhealthy air without any fault of its own.”

He went on to accuse Canada of “willful negligence,” labeling the recurring event as a grave issue for the United States, one that drains billions from the nation. Consequently, Trump suggested these environmental costs would likely be reflected in increased tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.

Climate experts, however, say higher temperatures have led to drier forests and more wildfires in recent years. Canada has one of the world’s largest forests.

“As our climate warms, we’re seeing more conducive hot, dry, windy, more extreme weather, and we’re going to see more fire,” said Mike Flannigan, a professor of wildland fire at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia.

Shortly after taking office in 2025, Trump imposed tariffs on several key imports from Canada.

Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Carney said on Thursday the United States could do more to combat climate change that is leading to warmer and more extreme temperatures around the world.

The two men are likely to meet at the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on Monday.

Many blazes this year are in the giant province of Ontario and are concentrated in the remote and sparsely populated northwest, where the only mode of transport is plane.

So far, 27,830 square kilometres of forest have burned in Canada this year.

Thousands of people have been evacuated.

‘Nothing remaining’

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, also known as Collins First Nation, in northwestern Ontario was burned to the ground, forcing residents to evacuate by boat and seek shelter in Thunder Bay, Matthew Hoppe, the community’s incident commander, told the Reuters news agency.

“There was nothing remaining. So as you can imagine, the membership is totally distraught, upset, overwhelmed, lost,” Hoppe said.

Thunder Bay, a city of about 110,000 people on the northern shore of Lake Superior more than 1,300km northwest of Toronto, is at full capacity from sheltering wildfire evacuees from across northwestern Ontario, Mayor Ken Boshcoff said.

A massive fire on the horizon in a wild area, seen from a helicopter.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Friday said the province would buy 11 new aircraft to help counter the fast-spreading wildfires and pushed back against US politicians who have criticised the campaign as inadequate.

The United States is also experiencing an above-average fire year, with nearly 15,000 square km burned to date in 2026, compared with a 10-year average of around 11,000 square km, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Rising global temperatures driven by greenhouse gases emitted by burning fossil fuels are making wildfire conditions more severe.

Texas Prosecutor Uncovers Shocking New Details in ICE’s Fatal Shooting of Houston Father

In a recent development, a federal prosecutor based in Texas unveiled new insights on Thursday evening concerning the lead-up to a fatal incident where an immigration officer shot and killed a Mexican national, who had spent many years residing in the United States, in early July. This revelation complicates the narrative previously provided by the government, which claimed that the man had collided with an ICE vehicle shortly before the shooting occurred.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52 years old, was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on July 7. At the time, he was commuting to a construction site in Houston alongside three co-workers, including his brother. This incident ignited waves of protest in the expansive Texan city, resonating with Salgado Araujo’s family’s calls for openness and accountability. Known as a dedicated father, Araujo was reportedly close to securing legal status in the United States after having lived there for 35 years.

This tragic event unfolded just days before two other individuals lost their lives in Florida and Maine amidst President Donald Trump’s intensified federal immigration enforcement efforts. These back-to-back incidents have once again brought the enforcement methods of the Department of Homeland Security under the microscope.

Speaking on Thursday, Aaron Reitz, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas, disclosed that the ICE officers’ original objective was to locate two Guatemalan men suspected of being eligible for deportation. According to Reitz, the van these men were allegedly traveling in bore a resemblance to the one driven by Salgado Araujo during the tragic incident. On the day of Salgado Araujo’s death, the Department of Homeland Security stated he had been pursued as part of an immigration enforcement crackdown and was residing in the country without proper documents.

Reitz further noted that the officers on the scene presumed that Salgado Araujo and his passengers matched the description of the Guatemalan individuals they were attempting to apprehend, leading to the fatal encounter.

Four officers driving two separate law enforcement vehicles attempted to pull over Salgado Araujo’s van using their police lights. Salgado Araujo then made a U-turn and drove over a median to evade getting pulled over, Reitz said.

Later that morning, the officers again encountered Salgado Araujo’s van and for the second time tried to pull him over, this time effectively surrounding the vehicle, Reitz said. Two of the four agents got out of their cars and told Salgado Araujo to put the vehicle in park. Just before he was shot, one of the agents was “partially inside the van or immediately next to it” when Salgado Araujo tried to reverse and then drive forward again, Reitz said.

An earlier DHS statement accused Salgado Araujo of weaponizing his vehicle. The agency said he rammed his van into a law enforcement vehicle and said an officer opened fire in self-defense. The most recent statement from the U.S attorney’s office, however, didn’t mention any collision between Salgado Araujo’s van and a law enforcement vehicle. It also didn’t explicitly say that the officer feared for his life. There are no reported injuries for the officers involved.

The latest statement didn’t name the officer who killed Salgado Araujo, nor did it specify if the officer who fired the shot was the same person who was next to, or partially inside, the van.

Reitz also said in the statement that officers “saw in plain view several small bags of a white, crystal-like substance inside the van” and that the FBI later executed a search warrant to investigate for possible illicit substances. Salgado Araujo’s brother, who was in the van when the shooting happened, has been in ICE detention since the incident. His attorney said the white substance was a salt mixture that the men used as electrolytes to stay hydrated while doing manual labor in the grueling Texas heat.

Few photos or videos surrounding the shooting in Houston have emerged on social media, unlike other deaths involving federal immigration officers.

Police Rescue Crying Children Left Alone in Car as Mom Shops at Walmart

Inset: Lovenia Brooks (Brevard County Sheriff’s Office). Background: News footage of the Walmart in Melbourne, Fla., where Brooks allegedly left her kids in a hot car (WESH).

In a concerning incident in Florida, a woman was taken into custody after allegedly leaving her two small children unattended in a sweltering car while she shopped for PediaSure at a Walmart.

Authorities arrested 33-year-old Lovenia Brooks, charging her with two counts of child neglect. Police discovered her children, including an infant, alone in her Mitsubishi SUV, which was reportedly parked in the fire lane outside the Melbourne store on July 11. The incident came to light when a passerby noticed the children and alerted law enforcement. Legal documents reviewed by Law&Crime indicate that the bystander saw the children alone inside the vehicle.

According to police, the good Samaritan remained near the SUV, which was not running, although its windows were down. The baby was described in the affidavit as “actively upset and crying.” Brooks was seen hastily leaving the store and returning to the car just nine minutes after the bystander made the discovery.

Upon her return, the bystander informed an officer from the Melbourne Police Department that Brooks drove away “recklessly,” narrowly avoiding a crash.

A traffic officer, along with the first officer, quickly caught up to Brooks’ red Mitsubishi and pulled her over for a traffic stop. Both officers saw the children in the back seat, “one improperly buckled in a rear-facing car seat and the other juvenile in the back seat unsecured,” according to the affidavit.

When the officers asked Brooks about leaving her children alone, she said she was “just quickly running inside” to get PediaSure for one of her kids. Police asked her why she did not take her children inside the store with her, and she responded that “she should have and that she was just trying to get one thing done.”

Surveillance video determined that Brooks left the children alone outside the Walmart for nine minutes before she returned to her SUV. Police noted in their report that the air temperature reached 96.6 degrees Fahrenheit in Melbourne on July 11 and a heat advisory was in effect while Brooks ran her errand.

In addition to two counts of child neglect, the traffic officer issued Brooks citations for leaving a child in a vehicle, failing to properly restrain an infant, and not wearing a seat belt.

Brooks was booked into the Brevard County Jail after undergoing a medical evaluation. She posted bond and was released on July 13. Her next court date was scheduled for Aug. 6.

20-Year Fugitive from ‘America’s Most Wanted’ Captured on Sailboat Near New Jersey Coast

0

In a remarkable turn of events, a former Rhode Island anesthesiologist, Ronald L. Fischer, who was on the run for over two decades, has been apprehended. Fischer, who disappeared during his trial for child sexual assault, was discovered aboard a sailboat off the scenic New Jersey coast after a clue from an online investigator led authorities to his hideout, as confirmed by the FBI.

Fischer had managed to evade capture since 2005, marking him as one of Rhode Island’s most elusive fugitives. After fleeing his state during his sexual assault trial, he remained a wanted man, convicted of first-degree sexual assault in absentia by jury judgment, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. The search, which spanned over 20 years, showcased the relentless pursuit by law enforcement to bring him to justice.

Authorities eventually traced Fischer to New York, where he was discovered living aboard a 56-foot sailboat named The Silver Lining. Intriguingly, the vessel was registered under the name “Richard Graydon,” further complicating the search for Fischer.

After spending more than two decades on the lam, Ronald L. Fischer, once a practicing anesthesiologist and among Rhode Island’s most notorious fugitives, has finally been captured, as reported by authorities. (Rhode Island State Police)

Deputy U.S. marshals, FBI agents and U.S. Coast Guard personnel intercepted the vessel off the coast of New Jersey before taking Fischer into custody without incident, according to the FBI Boston Division.

FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks said the breakthrough came after investigators received “a tip from an online sleuth,” which led them to the sailboat registered under Fischer’s alias, Robert Graydon.

“Ronald Fischer thought he had escaped justice but thanks to a tip from an online sleuth, the FBI was able to develop new intelligence which led investigators to the boat belonging to Fischer under his alias Robert Graydon,” Docks said. “That’s when the FBI and the RI Violent Fugitive Task Force coordinated a multi-state law enforcement operation that resulted in Fischer’s capture. This is truly a testament to our strong law enforcement partnerships that allow for the seamless sharing of intelligence in real-time to take violent criminals off our streets.”

Fischer was transported aboard a U.S. Coast Guard vessel to Coast Guard Station Staten Island, where he was turned over to deputy U.S. marshals and local law enforcement officials.

“This arrest demonstrates that time does not erase accountability,” U.S. Marshal Wing Chau for the District of Rhode Island said in a statement.

“For more than twenty years, Ronald Fischer believed he had successfully escaped justice,” Chau continued. “The men and women of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, together with our partners, remained committed to ensuring that day would eventually come.”

Rhode Island State Police said Fischer’s arrest brought an end to one of the state’s longest-running fugitive investigations, crediting generations of investigators who continued pursuing the case over the past two decades.

“We are proud of the persistent, coordinated work that brought him to justice and the numerous Troopers, both currently serving and retired, who pursued this case for the last two decades,” Rhode Island State Police said in a statement. “They never stopped seeking justice for his victim and we are thankful for their dedication.”

The arrest capped an intensive multi-state investigation led by the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the FBI, Rhode Island State Police and numerous federal, state and local agencies.

Authorities credited FBI special agents and intelligence analysts with helping locate Fischer after more than two decades on the run.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Fischer had been living under the alias “Richard Graydon” before coordinating with federal, state and local partners to arrest him.

News Media has reached out to the U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, Rhode Island State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard for additional details about Fischer’s life as a fugitive, the investigation that led to his capture and whether photos or video of the arrest will be released.

Robert Kraft Discusses Mike Vrabel’s Challenging Offseason

0

Robert Kraft has finally broken his silence regarding the turbulent offseason experienced by Mike Vrabel.

In the hustle and bustle of Fanatics Fest in New York last Friday, Kraft shared the stage with Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin. During the event, ESPN host Shae Cornette seized the opportunity to inquire about the head coach’s offseason, which had been marred by scandal.

Kraft did not shy away from expressing his support, stating, “We are fortunate to have Mike as our head coach. To err is human, and even the best are not immune to mistakes. What’s remarkable about Mike is his profound understanding of football’s intricacies and his exceptional technical prowess. He has a unique ability to connect with the players in a way that’s truly special.”

“Mike is someone in whom I have immense trust and confidence. I am hopeful that he will continue to lead our team as head coach for many successful years ahead,” Kraft added, highlighting his unwavering faith in Vrabel’s leadership.

This public endorsement marks the first time Kraft, now 85, has addressed the issues surrounding Vrabel, following allegations involving longtime NFL insider Diana Russini, which surfaced in an April report by Page Six.

Despite the controversy where the coach and reporter were photographed getting cozy and appearing to kiss, Vrabel has been retained as New England’s head coach with training camp around the corner.

Vrabel skipped the third day of the NFL draft in April to seek counseling in the wake of the scandal.

Although Russini’s future in sports media remains unknown, she spoke on the issue in June. The former reporter for The Athletic and ESPN is out of the business, for now, at least.

“This has had a significant impact on my life, both professionally and personally,” Russini wrote while referring to herself as an ex-journalist to The New York Times, which owns The Athletic.

Earlier this month, Russini was spotted on a luxury cruise with her husband, Page Six reported.

The Pats are expected to be among the favorites in the AFC again this season after reaching the Super Bowl last year, their first appearance in the post-Tom Brady era.

New England also executed a high-profile trade for three-time Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown, who was acquired from the Eagles for a future first- and a fifth-round draft choice in early June.

Chicago Faces Projected $98 Million Budget Shortfall: Mayor Johnson and City Council Coalition Address Accountability Concerns

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — This fall, Chicago’s city workforce, including police officers, may face potential layoffs as a dispute unfolds between Mayor Brandon Johnson and the City Council’s budget accountability coalition over a looming $98 million budget deficit projected for the middle of the fiscal year.

The most recent budget report from Johnson’s administration highlights this significant shortfall, sparking a fresh wave of blame concerning stalled revenue measures. The financial strain threatens jobs, as well as a planned $260 million advance payment towards pensions.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Bronzeville, Johnson expressed frustration with aldermen who had previously dismissed his proposal for a corporate head tax in last year’s budget discussions.

“We’re talking about workers, right? But that’s what we talked about during the budget season,” remarked Johnson. “The city council clearly prioritized the interests of large corporate entities over those of the workforce.”

Johnson attributed the deficit partly to the council’s alternative revenue strategies that have yet to generate income. On the other hand, Finance Committee Chairwoman Pat Dowell countered this claim, insisting that the council’s proposals were already integrated into the budget and criticized the administration for its delayed implementation.

“We’ve come up with solutions, and they’re baked into the budget. We need the administration to implement the budget,” Dowell said. “As you heard yesterday, a lot of the things that we wanted to pursue, they’ve taken their sweet time to do that.”

The administration has suggested that if layoffs become necessary, police may have to be included to achieve significant savings. John Catanzara Jr., president of the Fraternal Order of Police, warned that such cuts would be dangerous.

“We’re in the middle of the most violent part of the year, historically speaking,” Catanzara said. “There’s a lot of unknowns within the police department in the city at the moment, and taking sworn police officers off the street, couldn’t be a dumber idea for anybody to even utter those words out loud.”

Dowell said layoffs are not the only option and pointed to potential efficiencies, including an employee buyout program.

“I threw out an idea yesterday about an employee buyout, which they haven’t even evaluated. So, to me, this is scare tactics,” she said.

Johnson also reiterated his push for new taxes targeting wealthy residents and large corporations.

“That strategy failed,” he said of the council’s alternative revenue plan. “Now city council has to come back to the table and come up with something that’s going to ensure that our budget is not just structurally sound, but of course we challenge those with means to put more skin in the game.”

With an election year ahead and both sides emphasizing different revenue priorities, reaching a compromise could prove difficult.
