Anne Hathaway’s Compelling Performance Sparks Oscar Buzz

0

Christopher Nolan’s nearly three-decade-long filmography has received a new highlight: The Odyssey, which has emerged as his highest-rated film to date. Among the entire star-studded ensemble, one actor’s performance has captured the spotlight remarkably.

Amid this three-hour-long imaginative journey packed with top-tier performers, Anne Hathaway, portraying Odysseus’s devoted wife Penelope, is generating significant chatter on the Oscar circuit.

Critic Erik Davis praised Hathaway’s ‘incredible’ depiction of the iconic Greek personality, while Nine.com.au described her role as ‘one of the best performances of Hathaway’s career.’

Enthusiasts on social media platforms are equally charmed, with one X user enthusiastically predicting, ‘Anne Hathaway is sure to earn a nomination for her work in The Odyssey.’

Another admirer applauded her ‘passionate and multifaceted act, woven with threads of sorrow, loneliness, fury, and fading hope, all anchored by a profound and impressive love.’

A third wrote, ‘The best work in the film belongs to Anne Hathaway, and it is the best work she has done in years, possibly the best of her career.’

Outside of Hathaway, Matt Damon is also being lauded for what many feel is the greatest performance of his career as the main character Odysseus.

However, one surprising star who is also winning acclaim is actor Elliot Page.

Page only has a small part in the film, playing the role of Odysseus’s cousin Sinon, but his role has caused widespread controversy online due to the fact that he’s playing a formidable Greek soldier despite being transgender and only 5’1.

But despite the bigoted backlash around Page’s casting, the Juno star has already been singled out by fans for his short but powerful performance.

One moviegoer said that Page ‘silences every critic with a flawless performance in The Odyssey’ while critic Nina Starner said that she was, ‘thrilled to inform the haters, losers, and bigots that Elliot Page is SUBLIME IN THIS MOVIE’.

Online backlash has been brewing over The Odyssey’s diverse cast, which included multiple black performers like Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and rapper Travis Scott in Nolan’s adaptation of a Greek epic.

After months of mounting online fury, however, the professional critics rendered a resoundingly positive verdict on X ahead of the lifting of the official review embargo.

With over 60 reviews in so far, The Odyssey has achieved a near-perfect score on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with a current standing of 96%.

Does casting diverse actors in classic roles honor or undermine the original stories?

That score places Nolan’s 13th feature film at the top of the pile of his past movies with The Dark Knight trailing behind with a 94% critic score.

The reviews for The Odyssey are almost universal in their soaring praise and five star ratings.

The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner declared that ‘Nolan’s film – its star-studded cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Zendaya – is a glorious cinematic experience, a triumph both of story-telling and movie-making.’

Viner added ‘I rarely say this of movies nearly three hours long – one viewing simply isn’t enough.’

In a five-star review, Metro’s Tori Brazier said, external The Odyssey was ‘a watershed moment for filmmaking’.

Guy Lodge for Variety wrote that Nolan’s ‘take on Homer is thorough, robust and attentive both to scholarly detail and old-school moviemaking craft.’

Nolan’s movie of The Odyssey has been hotly anticipated for years, with an all-star cast including Damon as Odysseus and Hathaway as his wife Penelope.

Tom Holland features as the couple’s son Telemachus, while his wife and Spider-Man co-star Zendaya is playing the goddess Athena.

Robert Pattinson plays the villainous role of Penelope’s suitor Antinous, with Charlize Theron and Samantha Morton respectively as the goddesses Calypso and Circe.

Jon Bernthal plays the Spartan king Menelaus and Benny Safdie has been cast as his brother Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Conducts Search at Yurezz Home Center

BAXLEY, Ga. (WJHL) — In a recent development, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) conducted a search at the Yurezz Home Center in Baxley, Georgia, under the authority of a search warrant.

Yurezz Home Center, which specializes in manufactured and modular homes, left many customers in distress after an unexpected shutdown in June. This closure has stranded homeowners with incomplete projects and financial losses, affecting patrons in Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Northern Florida, and East Tennessee.

Further complicating matters, more homeowners across Northeast Tennessee are reporting problems with the company.

The situation intensified when the Appling County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of 42-year-old Richard Carl Altman in Baxley on July 8. He faces charges related to the illegal transmission of monetary funds, as announced on July 9.

The GBI is actively seeking assistance from affected customers to further their investigation. They have made an appeal: “If you suspect fraud or have not received the goods or services you purchased from Yurezz Home Center during 2025 or 2026, there are three channels available to report your information.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) did not share any details about the findings from the search warrant.

Iran Urges Houthis: Is Cutting Red Sea Access Imminent?

0

Adding to the tension, Iran is said to have directed Yemen’s Houthi rebels to ready themselves to shut down a vital passage in the Red Sea should U.S. forces hit Iranian energy facilities, according to Reuters. Experts warn that even if the Houthis can’t entirely close this gateway, any disruption could have severe implications for international shipping routes.

“This is a serious threat,” noted Nadwa Al-Dawsari from the Middle East Institute in a statement to News Media. She pointed out the recent volatility and warned that U.S. strikes on Iran might prompt Tehran to react by targeting the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

According to Reuters, three insiders revealed that Iranian authorities have deliberated on involving the Houthis to obstruct the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and recently communicated this strategy to the group. A source linked to the Houthis confirmed that missiles and drones are positioned close to this strategic location, just awaiting the green light to initiate assaults on vessels.

Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former British ambassador to Yemen and senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, warned in a recent News Media report that a full resumption of the Houthi maritime campaign could trigger wider fighting.

“It will be interesting if the Houthis do go all in, and resume their campaign against Red Sea shipping with full intensity,” Fitton-Brown said. “This will draw international anger and likely result in Israeli and U.S. strikes on Sana’a and Hodeida.”

“There is potential for a general escalation if this happens, albeit one in which the allies have a clear military advantage,” he added.

Al-Dawsari said the Houthis have continued developing the weapons needed to threaten the narrow shipping corridor despite largely refraining from maritime attacks over the past year.

“While the Houthis have largely refrained from attacking shipping for about a year, they have continued to advance their maritime capabilities, including missiles, drones and sea mines,” she said. “They may not be able to fully close the strait, but they could significantly disrupt shipping and raise costs and risks for commercial traffic.”

The State Department said it was closely monitoring the situation. “The Administration’s National Security Strategy states that our core interests in the Middle East include ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the region as well as preventing the export of terrorism,” a State Department spokesperson told News Media. “In line with this strategy, the Administration has clearly demonstrated its commitment to defending these interests against Houthi and Iranian aggression.”

The spokesperson said the U.S. “continues to actively enforce the Trump Administration’s designation of the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and disrupt Iranian funding and arms transfers,” while condemning “Iran’s flagrant violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and international law in threatening freedom of navigation and supporting their Houthi proxies.”

The State department added that Washington has “worked to cut off the Houthis’ access to financing and weapons at every opportunity,” including sanctioning “more than 200 entities associated with the organization to limit their ability to carry out their terrorist actions.”

Despite years of sanctions and military operations, experts say the Houthis remain capable of significantly disrupting shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb, even if they cannot completely close the strait. Its previous missile and drone campaign demonstrated that repeated attacks — or even a credible threat of them — can push major shipping companies to reroute vessels around Africa, driving up insurance, fuel and freight costs.

The Bab el-Mandeb connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea and Suez Canal, making it one of the world’s most important maritime choke points. The consequences of renewed attacks would be especially severe because Iran has already disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, historically the principal route for roughly one-fifth of global energy supplies.

A substantial volume of Gulf oil has consequently been redirected through Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Reuters reported that the Bab el-Mandeb route now carries approximately 7% of global energy supplies and that Saudi Arabia has shifted about 70% of its energy exports through Yanbu.

The reported instructions also raise new questions about how much control Tehran exercises over major Houthi military decisions.

“Any decision to escalate in the Bab al-Mandab would be strategic and tied more to the interests of Iran and the Axis of Resistance than to Houthi interests alone,” Al-Dawsari said. “Decisions of this magnitude are likely coordinated through the Axis’ joint operations room under IRGC oversight.”

A source close to the Houthis claimed representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Yemen would control the timing of any move against the strait, Reuters reported.

The latest warning follows earlier Houthi threats against maritime traffic. In the June 12 report, News Media reported that the group had announced a complete ban on Israeli-owned ships in the Red Sea and declared them “legitimate targets.”

A State Department spokesperson told News Media at the time that the actions of Iran and the Houthis were “unacceptable” and “dangerous,” warning that they could inflame regional tensions and further disrupt global supply chains.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has “repeatedly condemned” Houthis attacks against ships in the Red Sea and called on all parties Thursday to avoid further escalation, his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, told News Media.

“Any disruptions or attacks would endanger the safety and security of seafarers, freedom of navigation and the stability of global supply chains and have a negative impact on the economic and humanitarian situation in Yemen and beyond,” Dujarric said. “The Secretary-General underscores that U.N. Security Council Resolution 2722 (2024) must be fully respected in its entirety,” he said on the resolution condemning at least two dozen Houthis attacks on commercial vessels since November 2023 and demanding an immediate end to the attacks.

The emerging threat has also renewed scrutiny of the Iranian weapons networks that helped build the Houthis’ missile and drone arsenal.

Amr Al-Bidh, foreign affairs chief of the Southern Arabian Transitional Council, said that the reported threat also exposed broader failures in the handling of Yemen’s security crisis. “The fact that individuals convicted of trafficking Iranian weapons to the Houthis and leading terrorist operations are now being released under a U.N.-brokered deal only underscores how poorly the Yemen crisis is being managed,” he said, “the main beneficiary of this vacuum is Iran, as seen in its credible threat to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait.”

In a July 15 letter obtained by News Media, the Southern Arabian Transitional Council formerly known as the Southern Transitional Council, a southern Yemeni separatist movement that seeks greater autonomy or independence for the territory of the former South Yemen, warned U.N. Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg that a U.N.-facilitated detainee agreement may include people the council says were convicted of assisting Iranian weapons transfers to the Houthis.

An annex identifies individuals the council alleges were members of a cell that smuggled drones, aviation fuel and heavy and medium weapons from Iran to Sanaa.

The Office of the U.N. Special Envoy for Yemen said it received the letter only after the agreement had already been signed and stressed that it does not determine which detainees are released.

“We have received the letter after the agreement was signed,” spokesperson Ismini Palla told News Media. “The United Nations – as well as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – do not decide who is released and who remains in detention. Our role is limited to mediating the negotiations and ICRC leads on the implementation of the release operation.”

Palla added that “the names of those released are proposed and agreed between the parties under the framework of the Stockholm Agreement on prisoners’ exchange of 2018.”

News Media reached out to the State Department and the Iranian Mission to the United Nations on the latest developments.

Florida Woman Allegedly Attacks Friend with Scissors in Uber Over Beer Dispute

0

A Florida woman’s irritation allegedly escalated to violence when her friend denied her request to drink beer during their Uber ride. This incident reportedly ended with her stabbing him with scissors.

According to an arrest report available to Law & Crime, 32-year-old Lynn Marie Zamora was taken into custody on Monday night following the audacious attack. Both she and the male victim had been picked up by a rideshare vehicle from the Best Western Plus Kendall Hotel & Suites in Miami.

The duo was en route to a friend’s house when Zamora expressed her desire to enjoy a beer along the way.

Upon being informed by the victim that consuming alcohol was not permissible during the ride, Zamora allegedly grew irate, adamantly insisting she had the right to drink.

Despite the victim’s repeated attempts to dissuade her, Zamora allegedly retrieved scissors from her purse and stabbed him in the left bicep and calf, as reported by the media outlet.

The Uber driver immediately pulled over and jumped out of the car — the victim following close behind — before calling 911.

Police arrived on the scene and arrested Zamora.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Zamora was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to an arrest report obtained by Law & Crime.

According to Uber’s community guidelines, “drug use and open containers of alcohol are never allowed while using the Uber Marketplace Platform,” and riders are instructed to “never bring illegal drugs or open containers of alcohol into a car.”

The 32-year-old appeared over a video call in front of a judge on Wednesday from jail, where it was revealed that she was already on probation for a separate battery conviction against a person aged 65 years or older, video obtained by WSVN shows.

It was also revealed that Zamora had at least several other prior assault and battery convictions and a conviction for tampering with an electronic monitor.

Zamora’s attorney attempted to have her moved to a hospital, but the judge denied the request because of the probation violation that needed to be handled first in a separate court hearing.

Following the judge’s order to hold Zamora on probable cause with a bond set at $7,500, Zamora became visibly distressed, pleading with the judge despite the audio being muted before being escorted away by a bailiff.

She is scheduled to have her next court appearance for Monday’s arrest on Aug. 12.

China Accused of Breaching 220M Voter Files by Trump

0

In a dramatic primetime address from the White House, Donald Trump accused China of a massive interference operation involving 220 million American voter files. He labeled this alleged intrusion as the largest instance of election meddling ever recorded.

During his speech, the President also pointed fingers at Venezuela, accusing it of attempting to sway US elections. He further suggested that the ‘deep state’ was engaged in a broad cover-up related to his claims of fraud in the 2020 election, in which he lost to Joe Biden.

Trump’s decision to revisit claims about the previous election stirred frustration among some Republicans. As they gear up for the midterms, there is concern that dwelling on past grievances might not be advantageous for garnering future support.

He asserted that the People’s Republic of China executed what could be the largest breach of election data in history, compromising sensitive information of 220 million U.S. voters in the process.

The President elaborated that the compromised data included personal details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, political affiliations, and more. Trump claimed a ‘data exploitation unit’ tasked with capturing this data was operating within China.

‘This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare.’

No evidence of voting machine insecurity or fraud in the 2020 election has been established. Trump’s claims have come under heightened scrutiny; some major broadcast networks like ABC and NBC refused to carry his remarks live.

‘In a rare move, NBC and ABC fake news have both said that they would not cover this speech,’ Trump stated. ‘They know how corrupt our system is and … They and others in the media are part of a plot.’

A March 2021 US intelligence report assessed that China considered, but did not deploy, interference operations on the 2020 election.

‘US Spy agencies began learning about the compromise of voter registration files in 2020 when they discovered that tens of millions of voter data, think of that, tens of millions voters’ data in 18 states have been bought, stolen or hacked by China,’ Trump alleged.

Trump claimed that China wanted him to lose the 2020 election. ‘I was wise to them, charged them billions and billions of dollars worth of tariffs,’ Trump said of his first term.

He also announced the release of hundreds of previously classified files about US elections. Many of the files are heavily redacted.

Referencing newly declassified files, Trump said that some documents reveal ‘that members of the deep state’ worked to ‘actively suppress and downplay information about the extent of China’s sinister election rally.’

Despite all of his accusations lobbed against China, the President did not threaten any consequences. President Xi Jinping and his wife are still scheduled to travel to Washington, DC, for a state visit in September following Trump’s trip to China in May.

Referring to another newly unclassified CIA report, Trump said the Nicolas Maduro regime developed methods to digitally alter vote totals in ways that could not be detected, even with an audit, no matter how deep they went.’

The 2021 report also claims that though ex-Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro may have wanted to sway US public opinion against Trump during the 2020 election, he lacked the ability to do so.

Included in the White House’s document release was a mention about a Department of Homeland Security review that identified ‘approximately 278,000 non-citizens who are registered to vote in federal elections.’

Though the number may be much higher since the administration alleges that Democrat-led states did not cooperate with the Trump administration and withheld their voter files.

The President has maintained for the better part of a decade that he won the 2020 election against Joe Biden.

Delivering his speech from the White House’s East Room, the President was joined by a number of top Cabinet officials.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and more were in attendance, a picture posted by White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shows.

‘The 2020 election was not stolen. We won, and he lost,’ former Vice President Kamala Harris posted on X Thursday night.

The administration has been investigating the circumstances of Trump’s 2020 loss, including the seizure of election records in Fulton County, Georgia, the hotly contested area around Atlanta.

Additionally, the White House unveiled alleged evidence recovered after a Michigan state police raid on voter registration fraud by Democrats in Muskegon.

The administration accuses Biden’s DOJ of slow-walking an investigation into the matter and Trump has told the FBI to investigate.

The President’s fresh allegations about the 2020 election had his MAGA supporters in an uproar about the alleged plot against the Republican.

Despite all of his accusations lobbed against China, the President did not threaten any consequences. President Xi Jinping and his wife are still scheduled to travel to Washington, DC, for a state visit in September following Trump's trip to China in May

‘This may be the most important Oval Office address since the Cuban Missile Crisis,’ Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno wrote on X. ‘The time for complacency with China is over.’

Meanwhile, Democrats bemoaned the address as a tireless rehashing of the Republican’s longstanding gripes and that his claims lacked evidence.

Beyond the White House, a significant portion of Republicans believe the 2020 election was ‘stolen.’

According to an April Reuters poll, nearly two in three Republicans (63 percent) agree that the 2020 contest was stolen from Trump via election fraud.

One in five (21 percent) independents agreed, while just 9 percent of Democrats also said the 2020 election was taken from Trump.

The speech comes amid the backdrop of the administration’s efforts to have the Senate pass the SAVE America Act.

If passed, the measure implements election reforms such as requiring proof of US citizenship to register or update voter registrations for federal elections.

It also would mandate the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls and force states to check federal databases to see if voters are allowed to cast ballots.

The measure has passed the House but has been stalled in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to pass, including support from a handful of Senate Democrats.

Critics say the bill establishes barriers preventing eligible voters from casting ballots, while proponents argue it secures the electoral process.

The White House announced the address on Monday but gave few details about what the special event would focus on.

The following day, the President teased, ‘What we’re going to talk about Thursday, it doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country.’

‘We’ll be discussing other things too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement’

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Thursday said that the US ‘Should have the safest and most secure elections in the history of the world … and what the President will be speaking about tonight will show you that perhaps that is not the case.’

Certain broadcasters were concerned about the speech; ABC and NBC chose to stream the remarks as opposed to broadcasting them on their networks.

Shocking Security Breach Leads to Firing of Today’s Show Guard After Intruder Storms NBC Set

0

A security guard at the Today Show has been dismissed following an alarming incident in which a trespasser breached the set, charging at anchor Craig Melvin while hurling a racist insult.

The security personnel, whose identity remains undisclosed, was let go on Thursday. This came after he allegedly failed to prevent a mentally unstable individual from entering Studio 1A at New York City’s Rockefeller Center around 9 a.m., during an off-air moment for the hosts, as reported by TMZ.

Security video obtained by Page Six reportedly captured two guards at the entrance when the break-in unfolded. One guard is seen briefly walking away, while the other allegedly failed to spot the intruder entering the restricted area.

Authorities have not disclosed which of the two guards was terminated in the aftermath of the security lapse.

Sources revealed that staff members were disheartened by the news of the guard’s firing, describing him as a cherished colleague within the building, as noted by Page Six.

The decision to terminate the guard came just hours after the suspect, named Andrew Truelove, gained access to the NBC News and Today Show plaza, reportedly inquiring about Al Roker’s whereabouts, according to TMZ.

Once in the restricted area, he allegedly slipped past the two guards undetected, breached security at the headquarters and asked Melvin where he could find the network’s weatherman.

He reportedly moved toward Melvin when it became clear Roker was not reachable. As he did, he allegedly screamed the N-word, TMZ reported.

Truelove reportedly made it as far as the staircase inside the studio while approaching the host and the backstage area near the dressing rooms, though the exact location remains unclear.

According to sources who spoke with Page Six, Truelove didn’t reach the actual studio set before security and staff rushed in shortly after Melvin alerted them to the horrifying incident.

A photo obtained by TMZ from inside the studio appears to show Melvin surrounded by staff members moments after the incident unfolded.

He later returned to the air with his fellow hosts without acknowledging the incident. Police said they responded to a report of ‘a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center.’

Although the incident was not captured during the broadcast, Melvin and Roker returned to air about 15 minutes later, with neither hinting at the drama that had just unfolded behind the scenes.

A statement from Today confirmed the ‘individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A’ before approaching Melvin. ‘There was no altercation, and no one was injured,’ it added.

In a later statement, the morning program said it was ‘cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter.’

‘NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously,’ the statement added.

The Today Show show also confirmed it is ‘reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.’

The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that Truelove was arrested and booked on several charges, including hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment, according to Page Six.

A spokesman also confirmed to The Daily Mail earlier that the intruder was detained and arrested.

Melvin took to Instagram after the incident to update fans and confirm that he would not be taking any time off following the unexpected confrontation.

His caption read: ‘Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m going just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on the Today Show.’

Melvin, 47, replaced Hoda Kotb as one of the show’s permanent anchors early last year, with his profile growing significantly since taking on the role.

Meanwhile, Roker, 71, remains one of the program’s most recognizable faces, having been a regular presence since 1996.

Argentina’s Winning Rituals for World Cup Final vs. Spain

0

As they gear up for Sunday’s World Cup final showdown against Spain, Argentina’s football enthusiasts are leaning into their beloved superstitions and rituals in hopes of attracting good fortune.

Led by Lionel Messi, the Argentine national team stands just 90 minutes away from defending their World Cup crown, having secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over England in Thursday’s semi-final clash in Atlanta.

With the final match rapidly approaching, fans are finding themselves jittery and in need of soothing comfort.

Across Argentina, engaging in traditional good-luck practices is a widespread method for managing game-day anxiety, with superstitions helping supporters navigate the mounting pressure.

According to Andres Gonzalez, speaking with Agence France-Presse in Buenos Aires’ working-class Liniers district, one common practice during matches is for fans to remain in the same spot they occupied when the team last found victory.

The self-declared “football addict” believes it is essential for everybody to follow the rules.

“If you went to the bathroom and there’s a goal, we lock you in. You stay there until the match is over,” the 48-year-old accountant explained with conviction.

‘Cabala’

Gonzalez is referring to a “cabala” — a ritual believed to bring good luck.

Such practices take place throughout society, with Argentine President Javier Milei disclosing his own special habits on Thursday.

“Under no circumstances” would Milei break his custom of watching World Cup matches from the presidential residence, he told El Observador radio.

Over in saleswoman Estela Vargas’s house, match rituals are set in stone — everyone wears the same clothes and sits in the same chair, while the dog must stay outside.

“In the match against England, since he’s an English bulldog, we put an Argentina jersey on him,” the 65-year-old said.

“For Spain, rain or shine, he stays outside.”

In Graciela Campos’s home, it is her mother-in-law who has to leave the room.

“She goes into the kitchen and knits a blue-and-white scarf,” Campos said.

‘Feeling involved’

These wacky habits are no joke to those who practice them.

“In football, Argentines don’t feel like spectators but like protagonists,” sociologist Diego Murzi told AFP.

“Rituals are part of that — feeling involved by bringing good luck and warding off bad luck,” he said.

“It’s something very present throughout the world of football,” Murzi added, pointing to former coach Carlos Bilardo as a prime example of the phenomenon.

Bilardo, who coached the team that won the World Cup in 1986, is “a man of science, but a superstitious person to an extreme degree”, said Murzi.

The sociologist recalled the story of a phone that rang in the locker room during Argentina’s first match.

“A player picked it up, and no one answered,” he said.

“Bilardo saw that and, since Argentina won, before every match he would have someone call that phone, have the same player answer, and make sure no one responded.”

‘Works every time’

Wild excitement and frayed nerves come together in many of the capital’s neighbourhoods, almost all of which are decked out in blue and white.

“All my rituals work every time,” said retiree Lidia Otero, who adores the national team just as much as her beloved Boca Juniors, the former club of Argentina and world football legend Diego Maradona.

The 74-year-old walked AFP through the specific gestures and chants she hurls at the TV when the other team is in possession.

In the first half of the semi-final against England, she said, “the dog sat watching the TV and Argentina didn’t score”.

“You know what?” she continued. “In the second half I turned her around, and that’s when the result turned around.”

Maradona, who died in 2020, remains a figure of reverence in Argentina.

Maradona’s former home in the Villa Devoto neighbourhood in Buenos Aires is the site of an altar to honour the beloved number 10.

Nor has the age-old tradition of freezing Argentina’s opponents faded.

“I grab the player’s sticker and put it in the freezer. My grandpa taught me that,” said 11-year-old die-hard Messi fan Rodrigo Serna.

South Carolina Man Receives 9-Year Federal Sentence for Racially Driven Shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a notable case underscoring the fight against racial discrimination, a South Carolina man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for infringing on the housing rights of his African-American neighbor.

As reported by the U.S. Department of Justice District of South Carolina, Jonathan Andrew Felkel, age 34, conceded during a preliminary plea hearing that on July 17th, 2025, he engaged in a racially charged confrontation. While driving into his community, where he and the victim, identified as J.M., resided, Felkel fired a gun and hurled the racially offensive threat, “You better keep running, boy!” as J.M. stood by the neighborhood gate.

The investigation revealed that Felkel confessed to authorities his biased assumptions. He stated he believed African-Americans were responsible for crimes in the area and mistakenly presumed J.M. to be a criminal solely due to his race, with the intention to intimidate him to “leave” and avoid the neighborhood entirely.

“Racially motivated violence will not be tolerated in South Carolina,” declared U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling for the District of South Carolina, reflecting the seriousness with which the justice system regards such egregious acts.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division commented on the resolution of this case: “Today, we have served justice for Jonathan Andrew Felkel’s appalling, racially inspired assault on the victim. Hate crimes do not just impact individuals; they undermine the very fabric of our society. The Justice Department remains resolved to aggressively pursue such cases, aiming to restore safety and trust within our communities.”

The FBI Columbia Field Office and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case.

EIU Football Welcomes Over 50 New Players Alongside Seasoned Senior Leaders

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The thrill of football is palpable in Charleston as Eastern Illinois University eagerly anticipates the start of the 2026 season.

With summer workouts in full swing, the team is committed to building strong bonds off the field while preparing for a season that promises intensity and challenge.

Last season didn’t end the way EIU hoped, finishing with a 3-9 record overall and just 2-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Facing formidable opponents, they’ve clashed with three powerhouses over the past couple of seasons, including the University of Illinois and Northwestern University in 2024, with Alabama lined up in 2025.

The Panthers’ journey in 2026 entails a rigorous travel schedule for their non-conference games. They will play four out of five games on the road. Beginning the season at Murray State on August 27, EIU will then head to Minnesota to face a Big Ten rival in their second week. The competition stays fierce as they travel to Normal to encounter Illinois State, who are fresh off a national championship appearance in the FCS playoffs, followed by a match against South Dakota State University, a team that finished last season with a 9-4 record.

Head coach Chris Wilkerson is enthusiastic about the opportunity to challenge his team against elite competition right out of the gate, seeing it as a crucial test early in the season.

“No matter who we’re playing, where we’re playing, what the score is, it’s just an opportunity to compete,” Wilkerson said.

There will be 56 new players coming to O’Brien Field of Eastern’s projected 111 player roster for the 2026 season. Wilkerson may have many new faces on his team, but says they have gotten more experienced with roughly half of fresh faces transferring in after stops at another college.

In April, the Panthers announced their two captains for the season. They are both returning seniors entering their last season in collegiate football. Charles Kellom is a redshirt senior running back, and Ja’Wuan Nickson is a senior linebacker.

Tuesday, EIU’s team leaders spoke about their mindset going into their last season and what the focus is as they lead a group with so many newcomers.

As for playing against a Big Ten team:

“It fires me up, I love it, I really do,” Kellom said.  “As long as we come together and everybody does their [job,] we’ll be good.”

Taylor Frankie Paul’s Custody Battle Intensifies: DCFS Steps In

Taylor Frankie Paul, seen filming season 4 of 'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives September 17, 2025 in West Hollywood, California.

Reality TV News

Just when it seemed like Taylor Frankie Paul had put her domestic challenges behind her, a fresh custody twist is steering the situation down a more critical path. Utah’s Division of Child and Family Services has recently submitted a petition, urging a juvenile court to claim jurisdiction over the children of the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star. This move hints at significant interventions in the lives of Paul’s children.

In what seems to be another chapter in Taylor Frankie Paul’s ongoing saga, matters have escalated regarding the custody of her three children. The Division of Child and Family Services in Utah has taken a decisive step by filing a petition to expedite a hearing aimed at evaluating the welfare of the children under the jurisdiction of a juvenile court. This action suggests that the agency is keen to initiate changes in their care arrangements.

DCFS wants a judge to step in for Taylor Frankie Paul’s Kids

At the core of Taylor Frankie Paul’s new legal turmoil is the custody of her children, which includes the two she shares with former husband Tate Paul, and the young child she has with her ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen. As reported by TMZ through court documents, the agency is appealing to a judge to determine if Paul’s children fulfill Utah’s criteria for being classified as “abused, neglected or dependent,” which would subsequently impose protective supervision measures.

The filing asks that the court appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the children’s interests directly, along with any additional restrictions a judge deems necessary for their well-being. The petition, submitted by the Utah Attorney General’s Office on behalf of DCFS, asks a judge to expedite the request.

This is not Taylor Frankie Paul’s first run-in with the agency. She and Mortensen have spent much of the year entangled in a custody battle that includes repeated accusations of domestic violence. They have dueling protective orders and are each arguing over their shared son. Tate Paul got involved in recent weeks when he filed for an emergency hearing, hoping to take full custody of his two children. The request was denied.

Her reality TV return

While all of Taylor Frankie Paul’s legal drama and custody battles have put a few speed bumps on her road to stardom, it hasn’t derailed her television career completely. She’s expected back for Season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and ABC has been mulling over finally releasing her shelved season of The Bachelorette.

At least, that appeared to be the plan until her most recent round of legal sparring with her exes and, now, a state agency. Whether the new DCFS petition further complicates those plans remains to be seen.

This is a developing story.
