EIU Football Welcomes Over 50 New Players Alongside Seasoned Senior Leaders

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The thrill of football is palpable in Charleston as Eastern Illinois University eagerly anticipates the start of the 2026 season.

With summer workouts in full swing, the team is committed to building strong bonds off the field while preparing for a season that promises intensity and challenge.

Last season didn’t end the way EIU hoped, finishing with a 3-9 record overall and just 2-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Facing formidable opponents, they’ve clashed with three powerhouses over the past couple of seasons, including the University of Illinois and Northwestern University in 2024, with Alabama lined up in 2025.

The Panthers’ journey in 2026 entails a rigorous travel schedule for their non-conference games. They will play four out of five games on the road. Beginning the season at Murray State on August 27, EIU will then head to Minnesota to face a Big Ten rival in their second week. The competition stays fierce as they travel to Normal to encounter Illinois State, who are fresh off a national championship appearance in the FCS playoffs, followed by a match against South Dakota State University, a team that finished last season with a 9-4 record.

Head coach Chris Wilkerson is enthusiastic about the opportunity to challenge his team against elite competition right out of the gate, seeing it as a crucial test early in the season.

“No matter who we’re playing, where we’re playing, what the score is, it’s just an opportunity to compete,” Wilkerson said.

There will be 56 new players coming to O’Brien Field of Eastern’s projected 111 player roster for the 2026 season. Wilkerson may have many new faces on his team, but says they have gotten more experienced with roughly half of fresh faces transferring in after stops at another college.

In April, the Panthers announced their two captains for the season. They are both returning seniors entering their last season in collegiate football. Charles Kellom is a redshirt senior running back, and Ja’Wuan Nickson is a senior linebacker.

Tuesday, EIU’s team leaders spoke about their mindset going into their last season and what the focus is as they lead a group with so many newcomers.

As for playing against a Big Ten team:

“It fires me up, I love it, I really do,” Kellom said.  “As long as we come together and everybody does their [job,] we’ll be good.”

Taylor Frankie Paul’s Custody Battle Intensifies: DCFS Steps In

Reality TV News

Just when it seemed like Taylor Frankie Paul had put her domestic challenges behind her, a fresh custody twist is steering the situation down a more critical path. Utah’s Division of Child and Family Services has recently submitted a petition, urging a juvenile court to claim jurisdiction over the children of the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star. This move hints at significant interventions in the lives of Paul’s children.

In what seems to be another chapter in Taylor Frankie Paul’s ongoing saga, matters have escalated regarding the custody of her three children. The Division of Child and Family Services in Utah has taken a decisive step by filing a petition to expedite a hearing aimed at evaluating the welfare of the children under the jurisdiction of a juvenile court. This action suggests that the agency is keen to initiate changes in their care arrangements.

DCFS wants a judge to step in for Taylor Frankie Paul’s Kids

At the core of Taylor Frankie Paul’s new legal turmoil is the custody of her children, which includes the two she shares with former husband Tate Paul, and the young child she has with her ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen. As reported by TMZ through court documents, the agency is appealing to a judge to determine if Paul’s children fulfill Utah’s criteria for being classified as “abused, neglected or dependent,” which would subsequently impose protective supervision measures.

The filing asks that the court appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the children’s interests directly, along with any additional restrictions a judge deems necessary for their well-being. The petition, submitted by the Utah Attorney General’s Office on behalf of DCFS, asks a judge to expedite the request.

This is not Taylor Frankie Paul’s first run-in with the agency. She and Mortensen have spent much of the year entangled in a custody battle that includes repeated accusations of domestic violence. They have dueling protective orders and are each arguing over their shared son. Tate Paul got involved in recent weeks when he filed for an emergency hearing, hoping to take full custody of his two children. The request was denied.

Her reality TV return

While all of Taylor Frankie Paul’s legal drama and custody battles have put a few speed bumps on her road to stardom, it hasn’t derailed her television career completely. She’s expected back for Season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and ABC has been mulling over finally releasing her shelved season of The Bachelorette.

At least, that appeared to be the plan until her most recent round of legal sparring with her exes and, now, a state agency. Whether the new DCFS petition further complicates those plans remains to be seen.

This is a developing story.

Urgent Search Underway: Indiana Dunes National Park and Coast Guard Respond to Mayday Alert

PORTER, Ind. (WLS) — The mission to locate a missing vessel in Lake Michigan was called off by emergency teams Thursday evening, amid an ongoing search for a boat purportedly in distress, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Authorities honed in on an area approximately two miles northwest of Indiana Dunes State Park, prompted by a distress call picked up through a marine radio, the IDNR confirmed.

Since the initial mayday transmission, all attempts at contact with the vessel have proved unsuccessful.

“The US Coast Guard reported receiving the sole Mayday call via a marine radio. In response, we dispatched boats and shore patrols to the scene,” explained the IDNR in a Thursday evening update. “Our search efforts were supported by the US Coast Guard’s boat and helicopter units, the Porter County Marine Unit, along with US National Park personnel on boats, the Porter Fire Department, and several other agencies who arrived via land routes. Despite extensive efforts lasting several hours, we found no distressed vessels, no unusual activity, and there were no subsequent mayday calls.”

Resource Powerhouse Applauds Strengthened US Relations as Mineral Race Heats Up with China

0

— The Democratic Republic of Congo is embracing America’s expanding role in its vital minerals sector, viewing it as a chance for collaboration rather than a rivalry with China. According to the country’s foreign minister, this multinational cooperation is essential for converting Congo’s abundant resources into future prosperity.

“I prefer discussing complementarity over competition,” shared Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner in a candid interview at the United Nations.

U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance had a meeting with the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington D.C., on June 27, 2025. (Ken Cedeno/Reuters)

“Countries as vast as the United States, Congo, and China cannot rely on a single partner for development,” Wagner explained. “Growth comes from forming various partnerships that address unique needs and bring diverse expertise.”

These remarks surface as the Trump administration aims to boost America’s access to Congo’s crucial resources like copper, cobalt, lithium, and gold. The goal is to diversify away from mineral supply chains heavily influenced by China.

A strategic partnership signed by Washington and Kinshasa Dec. 4, 2025, calls for increased economic cooperation, investment and the development of secure and transparent critical-mineral supply chains. The agreement accompanied a broader regional framework linking economic integration to efforts to end decades of conflict between Congo and Rwanda.

A separate arrangement involving DR Congo’s state mining company Gécamines and commodities trader Mercuria could give U.S. buyers priority access to some copper and cobalt supplies, Reuters reported Dec. 5, 2025. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation also expressed interest in taking a strategic stake in the partnership.

Kayikwamba Wagner said relations between the U.S. and DR Congo were taking “a more concrete shape” based on mutual economic interests.

She said Kinshasa welcomed “more U.S. interests in the DRC” that could help the country turn its mineral wealth into “tangible transformations for the lives of Congolese,” while also delivering benefits to American partners.

Speaking separately at a high-level U.N. meeting on critical minerals Tuesday, Kayikwamba Wagner warned that the global shift toward clean energy must not reproduce an economic model in which raw materials leave Africa while processing, technology and most of the profits remain elsewhere.

“The global energy transition must not become another extractive transition,” she said. “If it merely replaces one form of dependency with another, it will have fallen short of its promise.”

She called for foreign partnerships to support local processing, infrastructure, technology transfers, research, industrialization and access to financing — not simply secure supplies of raw materials.

Congo-Violence

The minerals push is closely connected to the U.S.-mediated peace process between the DRC and Rwanda. The countries initially signed a peace agreement in Washington June 27, 2025, before presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame reaffirmed the deal and signed related economic agreements on Dec. 4. The framework was intended both to reduce fighting and attract Western investment to a region rich in cobalt, copper, tantalum and other minerals.

Kayikwamba Wagner acknowledged that the agreement had not ended the violence but said Washington’s willingness to impose consequences for violations showed that the process remained meaningful.

“This is a 30-year conflict we’re dealing with,” she said. “It’s not going to happen overnight.”

She praised the administration for sanctioning the Rwanda Defense Force and senior Rwandan officials over what the Treasury Department described as their support for the M23 rebel group. Treasury said in March that the RDF had supported, trained and fought alongside M23 as it seized territory and strategic mining locations in eastern Congo. Rwanda has repeatedly denied supporting M23.

“I find it encouraging to see that we have with us a partner that is not willing to give up at the first obstacle,” Kayikwamba Wagner said.

She was in New York as the DRC, which holds the Security Council presidency for July, elevated the connection between natural resources, armed conflict and sexual violence.

Kayikwamba Wagner said rape and other forms of conflict-related sexual violence had risen sharply in areas held by M23 and Rwandan forces, affecting women and girls as well as men and boys.

Victims in occupied areas, she said, often lack access to courts, healthcare or other avenues for redress.

“This is also one of the reasons why we continue to be mobilized against this illegal occupation of eastern DRC,” she said, arguing that restoring state authority was essential to providing survivors with justice and medical care.

In her U.N. remarks, she cited the Rubaya mining area, which is under M23 control and supplies a significant share of global tantalum demand. She said U.N. experts estimated that at least 1,400 tons of coltan were smuggled into Rwanda during the first year after the mines were seized, generating approximately $800,000 per month for the armed group.

The Treasury Department imposed additional sanctions on June 25 against a network it accused of working with M23 to smuggle minerals from eastern Congo into Rwanda, saying the action was intended to support the Washington peace framework and improve transparency in regional mineral supply chains.

Beloved Mother Confirmed as Latest Victim in San Francisco Bay Boating Tragedy

0

In the wake of a horrific boating disaster in San Francisco Bay, a devastated family is mourning the loss of their cherished member. Tondra Miller, remembered as “our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt,” tragically lost her life during a voyage meant to honor a loved one’s memory.

On Thursday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified 58-year-old Tondra Miller, also known by the name Tondra Madruga, as one of three individuals missing following the capsizing of the private cabin cruiser Volare. The vessel, which measured 49 feet, succumbed to the turbulent waters Tuesday afternoon, sinking and leading to heartache for those involved.

Miller had joined 19 other family members and friends, journeying together from Stockton and Sacramento. They convened to honor Maria Boisa, a Fremont nurse who passed away a decade ago at the young age of 32, by scattering her ashes in the bay.

After a serene three-hour visit to Ayala Cove on Angel Island, the group began their return. However, their passage back to shore took a tragic turn when the boat encountered fierce conditions. A mighty swell struck, causing the top-heavy vessel to tilt, allowing water inside, and ultimately leading it to sink.

While sixteen passengers were fortunately rescued, with three sustaining injuries, the incident claimed the life of another individual, 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa. Boisa, a retired Sutter County reserve deputy, was another casualty in this devastating incident.

Two people remain missing and are believed to be trapped inside the sunken vessel, which rests about 120 to 130 feet below the surface west of Alcatraz Island.

Madruga was a friend of Maria, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

In a Facebook statement shared by Quin Madruga, the family said they were “heartbroken by the loss of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, Tondra Madruga.”

They asked for privacy as they grieve, saying, “Our hearts remain with every family impacted,” while thanking the public for its kindness and understanding.

The family also expressed their gratitude to the US Coast Guard, the San Francisco Fire Department, the San Francisco Police Department, first responders, civilian boaters and community members who helped rescue survivors and search for the missing, saying their dedication “mean more to our family than words can express.”

The statement, signed by Breanna Hewitt Crouch, concluded with a simple message: “Thank you for your prayers, love, and support.”

Boost Knee Strength Over 55 with 5 Effective Wall Exercises

0

Solid, robust knees are crucial for effortlessly maneuvering through everyday life.

>

If you’re noticing signs like stiffness, a lack of stability, or persistent soreness in your knees, it might be time to focus on strengthening them. Such symptoms can transform simple tasks like walking, standing, or climbing stairs into challenging, painful endeavors. Consulting an orthopedic specialist or healthcare provider is always a prudent step to understand what’s happening with your knees.

“Several elements contribute to the weakening of knee strength as we age past 55,” elucidates Dr. Gabriela Van Sickle, PT, DPT, CFMT, WCS, co-founder of Functional Physical Therapy. The primary factor is age-related muscle deterioration, known as sarcopenia, which diminishes muscle mass and strength unless we actively engage in resistance exercises. For women, hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can escalate muscle and bone loss, making strength training even more critical. Additionally, pain significantly impacts this process. Conditions like osteoarthritis, past injuries, or chronic knee discomfort can lead to the body’s reduced engagement of the quadriceps and related muscles. Even mild knee pain can hinder muscle contraction effectiveness, resulting in long-term weakness.”

If your knees are generally in good shape but could benefit from extra strength to improve reliability, finding the right exercises is key. We’ve discovered five wall workouts that can enhance knee strength more efficiently than some gym routines, particularly for those over 55.

“Walls offer a stable support, helping individuals to concentrate on exerting force rather than dealing with balance issues or navigating complex equipment,” Dr. Van Sickle notes. “This is advantageous for those over 55 who may grapple with confidence, arthritis, or have experienced falls. With diminished balance demands, individuals can execute exercises with better form, controlled speed, and consistent efforts, delivering an effective muscle workout without unnecessary compensations.”

Now, let’s get started.

Notorious Rhode Island Fugitive Apprehended on Yacht in Dramatic Arrest

0

After eluding authorities for nearly 20 years, a fugitive known for being on Rhode Island’s most-wanted list has been apprehended at last.

Ronald Fischer, who was convicted of raping Cheryl Gingrich on his boat in 2003, managed to disappear in 2005 during his trial in Newport.

On Thursday, Fischer was successfully captured by a collaborative effort between the US Marshals and the Coast Guard, who found him aboard a sailboat off the New Jersey coastline.

According to a statement from the US Marshals Service, investigators discovered Fischer navigating a 56-foot sailing boat named The Silver Lining. This vessel was incorrectly registered under the name Richard Graydon, an alias Fischer had adopted.

Utilizing a 45-foot Response Boat of the US Coast Guard, Deputy Marshals, along with Coast Guard personnel, managed to locate and intercept Fischer’s vessel about an hour away from shore.

The perp was taken into custody without incident, officials said. He was brought to Staten Island before being transferred to US Marshals and local police.

Fischer, a former doctor, was known to use multiple aliases and fake identities while evading authorities, NBC 10 WJAR reported.

The ex-doctor has a history of violence, pleading guilty to assaulting another woman before the attack on Gingrich – a conviction that ultimately cost him his medical license.

He raped Gingrich aboard his boat, The Lion King, in 2003 after the two met through an online dating ad.

His profile falsely claimed he was a physician and he shaved seven years off his age.

In her statement to police at the time, Gingrich recalled thinking: ‘All I could think was, “I’m alone at the bottom of this boat, and no one will hear me if I scream.”‘

Gingrich spoke to the outlet in 2025, saying the incident ‘changed the whole trajectory of her life’ and that she later received treatment for PTSD.

The victim described Fischer as an egotist and narcissist, saying he was ‘all about money and living a rich lifestyle.’

Retired Portsmouth police detective AJ Bucci called Fischer a ‘chameleon,’ saying he tried to appear as the kind of person who seemed like ‘a good catch.’

During his trial, Fischer emailed his lawyers shortly before closing arguments.

‘Although I believe my trial has gone very well, and expect to be acquitted and dismissed, the small chance of losing could carry extremely and unacceptably harsh penalties,’ Fischer wrote, per the outlet.

‘I have therefore decided not to take the risk and to leave the US and enjoy life in another country where I have long been carefully planning a good, safe, secure and comfortable life.’

Should fugitives who escape justice for years face harsher penalties when finally caught?

The jury convicted Fischer despite his absence from the courtroom. Gingrich said his escape made her lose faith in the justice system.

Rhode Island State Police described Fischer as a ‘master yachtsman’ and an internationally connected world traveler when they added him to their most-wanted list.

‘This arrest demonstrates that time does not erase accountability,’ said Wing Chau, US Marshal for the District of Rhode Island.

‘We hope today’s arrest brings a measure of justice and long-awaited closure to the victim and everyone impacted by these crimes.’
