New Zealand Cancels Tsunami Alert for South Island Following Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake

0

After a magnitude 5.9 earthquake reverberated near Te Anau, a town in New Zealand’s South Island, officials have lifted the tsunami warning initially issued late Thursday night.

The quake struck approximately 40 kilometers north of Te Anau, a quaint town known as the starting point for tourists exploring Fiordland. As per the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of New Zealand, no immediate damages or injuries were reported following the seismic event.

Originally estimated at a magnitude of 6.3, the earthquake’s force was later adjusted to 5.9 by NEMA. The tremor occurred at 9:14 PM local time (or 7:14 PM AEST).

NEMA decided to cancel the tsunami alert after two hours passed without any tsunami activity detected in the area.

Nevertheless, the agency cautioned that coastal regions might still encounter “strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges along the shore,” advising continued vigilance.

It said people should move out of the water, off beaches, and stay away from harbours, marinas and rivers.

Local resident Maylene Puyat, the duty manager at Te Anau’s Fiordland Hotel, told Reuters the earthquake was “a bit strong” and she felt shaking for one minute.

“In the hotel, it’s shaking, but nothing moved in the hotel,” she said.

Another resident told local outlet Otago Daily Times the earthquake shaking was “long and loud” and sounded “like a train”.

“The walls were definitely moving,” they said.

There were more than 18,000 “felt reports” to hazard monitoring system GeoNet.

Understanding The Punisher: Essential Insights Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day

0

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is swinging into theaters soon, and it brings along a surprising companion—Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. This unexpected duo of Spider-Man, portrayed by Tom Holland, and the relentless Punisher poses a compelling dynamic worth exploring before catching the film. To uncover Frank’s backstory and understand how he fits into this particular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment, check out Looper’s insightful explainer video above.

The journey of the Punisher, both in comics and on screen, is a fascinating tale. Conceived by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, and John Romita Sr., Frank Castle debuted in “Amazing Spider-Man” #129 back in 1973. This origin roots the Punisher deeply within Spider-Man’s universe. Over the decades, the character has undergone various transformations and has been adapted into several films. Before Jon Bernthal’s portrayal, the Punisher was brought to life by actors like Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Ray Stevenson.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is a force to be reckoned with

Bernthal took on the role of Frank Castle in 2016, first appearing as a major character in “Daredevil” Season 2. He later led his own series, “The Punisher,” which aired from 2017 to 2019. Although transitioning from the mature-themed Netflix Defenders series to the more family-oriented MCU seemed unlikely, the Punisher made a strong comeback. Castle resurfaces in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1 in 2025 and starred in the 2026 Disney+ special, “The Punisher: One Last Kill.”

With more than ten years portraying Frank Castle, Jon Bernthal stands as the longest-serving actor for the role, potentially defining the character for future generations. His debut in a full-length MCU film with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” promises action-packed scenes. To fully immerse in the Punisher’s cinematic journey before the film’s release on July 31, 2026, Looper’s explainer video remains the ideal resource.

Michigan Mom Admits to Child Neglect After Kids Live Alone

0

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A troubling case out of Michigan saw a woman plead no contest to horrific child abuse charges on Thursday. The woman, accused of abandoning three children to live in appalling conditions, faces a six-year prison sentence under the agreement, authorities reported.

The state of the Pontiac residence was shockingly poor. When the children were discovered in February 2025, police evidence teams deemed the conditions so hazardous that they had to wear hazmat suits.

The children, aged 15, 13, and 12, had been surviving largely on their own since either 2020 or 2021, getting by with sporadic food deliveries left on the porch. They lived surrounded by garbage and human waste, according to police reports. The dire situation came to light when deputies responded to a landlord complaining about months of unpaid rent.

Kelli Bryant, 35, the accused mother who resided elsewhere in Pontiac, entered a no contest plea to the charges of abuse. She is scheduled to appear in court again in September for sentencing. Attempts to contact her defense attorney yielded no response.

Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald commented on the plea agreement, noting, “This plea will prevent the children from having to testify at trial and ensures Bryant will be imprisoned until they reach adulthood.” She added, expressing hope, “I’m optimistic that the young victims will continue to receive the support and resources needed to recover from this severe ordeal.”

The father lost contact with the kids while in prison in an unrelated matter and was barred by their mother from seeing them when he was released, Sheriff Mike Bouchard said when Bryant was arrested.

Pasco Superintendent to Teach College Civics at River Ridge

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — In an exciting development for River Ridge High School, Dr. John Legg, the Pasco County Superintendent of Schools, is set to impart college-level civics lessons to the students. Many parents appreciate this initiative, expressing their support as long as it honors freedom of expression and allows Dr. Legg to balance his responsibilities as both an educator and a superintendent.

“I’ve been committed to this work for 20 years. It’s a true passion of mine, and I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 500 kids in this very course,” shared Legg, highlighting his dedication and extensive experience.

Driven by a deep love for teaching, Legg eagerly anticipated his return to the classroom, wanting to bring his expertise from realms of both politics and education directly to the students.

“We all stepped into the field of education because our hearts are drawn to teaching. We didn’t enter this world for the sake of bureaucracy and administration,” Legg remarked, emphasizing what truly drives educators.

Starting in August, Legg will teach two college-level courses to a group of 30 students over the school year.

Students will receive a total of six college credits for their work. The first class will be American Federal Government and the second will be Local Government.

“My hope is not only that they become more civically engaged, but that they’ll actually want to go into government and make a difference in our community,” Legg told 8 On Your Side.

The superintendent mentioned classes will be held twice a week for one hour. The class is meant to educate young minds regarding how the United States’ democracy works.

“There’s a big disconnect in our culture that, oh, that’s for the politicians, or that’s the political class. We’re a democracy. It’s about our students being engaged,” Legg said.

One school board member who is eager to see Legg teach is Megan Harding, who represents District 5.

Harding told 8 On Your Side via a statement, “There is simply no substitute for being in the classroom and seeing firsthand both the successes and the challenges our educators and students experience every day… This is especially meaningful to me because Dr. Legg was my government teacher when I was in high school… seeing him choose to step back into the classroom says a lot about the kind of leader he is.”

Parents whose children go to River Ridge High School seemed on board with the superintendent’s endeavor, as long as he can balance both his job as the leader of an A-rated school district and an educator.

“It’s awesome,” said John Solt, who has two children at River Ridge High School. “As long as that freedom is involved, you know, with independent freedom on your thoughts and beliefs, you know, I see no problem with it.”

“Learning from the front lines of the teachers; I think it’s really important to see what they go through, and as long as they’re responsible and, you know, they have the time to do it, that makes sense,” said Sharon Weiss, a River Ridge High School parent.

Legg will not be paid for his role as a teacher. He hopes other professionals such as principals are motivated to teach courses as well by his example. The superintendent said he was inspired by Ben Sasse at the University of Florida, who also taught while serving as their president.

Gigolos Star Ash Armand’s Shocking Downfall: From Reality TV Fame to Murder in Drug-Fueled Tragedy

0

Ash Armand, known for his stint on the reality TV show Gigolos, gained attention largely due to his unconventional relationships. However, it was a tragic incident involving an aspiring model that eventually led to his imprisonment.

Armand, whose real name is Akshaya Kubiak, was found guilty in 2021 of voluntary manslaughter and mayhem following the fatal beating of 29-year-old Herleen Dulai. The details of the case were reported by The Las Vegas Review Journal.

The legal proceedings brought Armand back into public discourse, with Dulai’s grieving family sharing the profound impact of her loss during his sentencing.

Curious about the current status of this former reality star?

Here’s a comprehensive look at the unsettling case and the latest on Armand’s situation.

What Happened to Herleen Dulai?

On the morning of July 16, 2020, Armand—who was featured on Showtime reality show about American gigolos from 2012 to 2016—claimed the two friends had been doing mushrooms when he “blacked out,” the paper reported. He told authorities he later regained consciousness to find Dulai laying dead beside him.

“It is going to sound insane because it is insane,” Armand told a 911 dispatcher from his Las Vegas condo in a recording obtained by Refinery29. “We took mushrooms together, said our prayers together, put on Avatar together.”

He told the dispatcher he was “no longer in this reality,” then realized Dulai was unconscious laying next to him.

“There was a struggle,” he told the dispatcher, per the outlet. “I temporarily lost my mind.”

Armand claimed Dulai had suffered a heart attack.

How Did Herleen Dulai Die?

When police arrived a few minutes later, Dulai was “obviously deceased,” noted an arrest report obtained by The Las Vegas Review Journal.

It was also clear that she hadn’t had a heart attack. Clark County Fire Captain Darren Lutes would describe her face as being “black and blue and swollen,” in court documents obtained by Refinery29, and her ear having a giant bruise. Her body was also covered in candle wax.

Prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci later told the court, per The Las Vegas Review Journal, that Dulai also had defensive wounds to her forearms and a chipped tooth that was recovered from her stomach.

When Lutes asked Armand how she got the injuries, Armand allegedly replied, “She attacked me, and I attacked her,” per the court records, then added “When the police get here, I’ll surrender.”

The Clark County Coroner’s Office determined that the 29-year-old died of blunt force trauma and strangulation in what was deemed a homicide.

What Happened to Ash Armand?

In September of 2021, he pleaded guilty to felony counts of voluntary manslaughter and mayhem. Three months later, he was sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison, according to The Las Vegas Review.

His defense attorney Josh Tomsheck had asked for a lesser sentence, arguing that his client had no prior criminal record and noted Armand had spared her family from having to relive the details in court.

Armand told the court, according to the outlet, that Dulai attacked him and he  “blacked out,” leaving him with no memory of the incident.

“I have never hit a woman in my life,” he insisted, per the newspaper, “and I certainly never wanted to hurt Herleen.”

Yet, prosecutors highlighted the violent nature of the attack.

Dulai’s brother Parambir Dulai expressed the toll her death had taken on the family.

“She wasn’t simply taken from us,” he said, per the The Las Vegas Review Journal, “she was brutally beaten to death.”

Ash Armand’s Alleged Tie to Sean Diddy Comb’s “Freak Offs” Revealed

Years later, Armand’s nontraditional background and the unsettling details of Dulai’s death were explored in the Paramount+ docuseries Sin City Gigolo.

“It was a very unconventional upbringing. There is no question,” director Barbara Shearer told TV Insider in 2025 of his past. “Very open sexually, which is unconventional in terms of sexuality. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. I don’t want that to be misconstrued. I just mean very unconventional upbringing. Very unconventional household, which I’m surmising why it wasn’t a big leap to go into being a sex worker.”

Several months after the docuseries was released in March, Armand’s name was once again in the spotlight after People confirmed that he had allegedly been a sex worker in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ notorious “freak offs.”

“Freak-offs occurred regularly, sometimes lasting multiple days, and often involved multiple commercial sex workers,” federal prosecutors explained in indictment in Combs’ case previously obtained by Oxygen. “During freak-offs, Combs distributed a variety of controlled substances to victims, in part keeping the victims obedient and compliant. Sometimes unbeknownst to the victims, Combs kept videos he filmed of victims engaging in sex acts with commercial sex workers. After freak-offs, Combs and the victims typically received IV fluids to recover from the physical exertion and drug use.”

Where is Ash Armand Today?

Today, Armand continues to serve out his sentence at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen.

New York Subway Survivor Relives Harrowing Attack by Deranged Stranger

0

For many in New York City, it’s a scenario straight out of their deepest fears.

A nurse from the Bronx shared his chilling ordeal, recounting how an unpredictable assailant suddenly shoved him in a subway station, leaving him unconscious and bleeding as bystanders stood by. The incident occurred without warning, and shockingly, no one stepped forward to offer assistance.

Josue Romano, 47, recounted his terrifying brush with the unknown, which took place while he was waiting for a southbound D-train at Fordham Road station on June 27. Out of nowhere, an unstable individual launched a vicious attack, propelling him face-first into the side of an oncoming train. The force left him with a concussion, Romano revealed in an interview with The Post.

“Did anybody help me out? Nobody helped me out,” Romano clarified on Thursday. His voice carried a sense of disbelief and disappointment. “Not even the conductor. There were people inside the train, and nobody came out to ask what happened to me. Nothing. Nothing.”

The perpetrator remains at large. This week, the NYPD released surveillance footage that, although grainy, offers a glimpse of the suspect. The individual is seen pacing around the subway car, clad in a white undershirt and dark-colored pants, igniting a public appeal for information to bring the attacker to justice.

Romano said he was waiting for his train to head downtown around 2:20 p.m. when he noticed the assailant out of the corner of his eye and became alert.

“This man is acting kind of strange,” Romano said. “I believe he was on drugs or something, and then I see he goes into his duffel bag. I don’t know what he was looking for in the duffel bag. I said, ‘Ok, let me keep my distance because he’s kind of acting kind of funny.’

Pix of suspect

Police are still looking for the deranged nut who shoved Josue Romano into a subway car in the Bronx.

“But the man that was right behind me, so I said, ‘Ok, let me just walk away, because of things that are going on in New York, there’s a lot of crazy things going on in New York.’”

Despite the precaution, and Romano moving away from the edge, the nut rushed at him.

“I glanced to the right and I see  something white coming towards me,” he recalled. “It was real fast because when I glanced, it was already coming to me so I didn’t have time to react, to like kind of get out the way, and that’s when it happened. I got hit.

“He pushed me in the back right in train that was coming in.”

Romano suffered injuries to his face and mouth, and collapsed onto the subway platform bloodied and unconscious, and was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital when help did arrive.

He said the incident has left him afraid to ride the rails — and skeptical of NYPD claims that the city transit system is safer than it’s been in months.

Major crime in the city’s subway system was down by about 1% in June, compared to last year, although felony assaults were up by 20 incidents in the month, according to NYPD stats.

“The statistics don’t mean anything,” Romano said. “I think  what we see is what goes on  and today is not the same as yesterday. The crime has grown more now than before.

“It’s just the crime is still growing and growing and growing no matter what the statistics say.”

The NYPD is asking anyone with information on the late June attack to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit tips by logging at  on X @NYPDTips.

Tate Brothers Accused of Rape Spark Outrage in D.C. After Shocking Elite Club Photo Surfaces

0

Influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, currently embroiled in legal challenges over accusations of rape and sex-trafficking in both the UK and Romania, were recently spotted in Washington, D.C. They were there at the invitation of Donald Trump’s special envoy, Paolo Zampolli.

Zampolli, who once managed a modeling agency and played a key role in introducing Donald Trump to Melania, shared with the Daily Mail that he hosted the Tates at a summer gathering. This event took place on Wednesday at a house in Northwest Washington, D.C., drawing around 150 attendees.

When questioned about the possible links between the event and his State Department responsibilities, the 56-year-old confidently dismissed the notion, stating, “Why would I do that? This was a summer gathering.”

While Zampolli admitted he wasn’t clear on the exact reason for the brothers’ visit to the city, he mentioned to the Daily Mail that “they’re having some business meetings.”

Additionally, on Tuesday, Zampolli escorted the notorious duo to the Ned, an exclusive private members’ club located near the White House and frequented by cabinet secretaries. The Tates’ presence reportedly shocked club members, leading to complaints being lodged with management, numerous insiders revealed to the Daily Mail.

‘They were mostly smoking cigars outside the club,’ a source said, and the pair left at around 11pm and went out for a drink afterward. ‘People in the administration were scared to be seen with Tate,’ he added.

The Tate brothers deny all allegations against them and are yet to face trial.

Zampolli was named special envoy for global partnerships in March 2025, a role that operates through the State Department.

‘Paolo routinely comes into conflict with State Department leadership, who are embarrassed by him,’ a State Department source told the Daily Mail.

Now Zampolli has attached himself to two of the most polarizing figures in the Trump-aligned media world, introducing the Tates to Washington’s political elite.

The Tate brothers also made their way to Capitol Hill to rub elbows with Republican lawmakers.

A photo obtained by the Daily Mail shows the pair posing with Texas Representative Wesley Hunt in his congressional office.

The meeting came together after Tristan Tate reached out to Hunt through the congressman’s social media aide.

‘Wesley was beyond excited to meet with them,’ said a source in Hunt’s office familiar with the meeting.

Once inside, the brothers bragged about their time in a Romanian prison, including doing 100 push-ups every day, according to the source.

Hunt, a Houston congressman and Army veteran who took office in 2023 and brands himself one of Trump’s earliest and most loyal backers in Congress, finished a distant third in this year’s Republican Senate primary in Texas.

The Daily Mail contacted Hunt for comment.

The brothers arrived in the capital carrying heavy baggage. Andrew and Tristan were arrested in Romania in December 2022 and charged in June 2023 with human trafficking and forming an organized crime group to sexually exploit women. Andrew was additionally charged with rape.

Romanian prosecutors in August 2024 expanded the case against them to include money laundering, witness intimidation and complicity in the trafficking of minors.

British prosecutors filed 21 charges of their own against the brothers in May 2025, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking.

Romanian courts have ruled the pair will be extradited to the United Kingdom once proceedings in Romania conclude.

The brothers have denied all charges and allegations against them.

The Tates flew from Romania to Florida in February 2025 after authorities lifted their travel ban, a reversal that followed reported pressure from Trump administration figures. Trump told reporters he knew ‘nothing about it.’

ProPublica later reported that a White House official intervened to have federal agents return electronic devices seized from the brothers when they landed in Florida.

This week’s gathering was not Zampolli’s first encounter with the brothers: he and Andrew were seen together on the sidelines of the Milken Institute Global Conference in May, and the two recently recorded a lengthy interview together.

It is unclear whether further meetings or parties for the brothers in Washington are planned later this week.

Zampolli's decades in New York's fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein, the sex offender, and Ghislaine Maxwell

Zampolli’s decades in New York’s fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein, the sex offender, and Ghislaine Maxwell

Zampolli’s place in Trump’s world was cemented in September 1998, after he says he introduced the future president to Melania Knauss at a New York party, two years after his modeling agency, ID Model Management, sponsored her US visa.

Zampolli’s decades in New York’s fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein was a patron of ID Model Management, and in 2004 he was a partner in Zampolli’s unsuccessful bid to purchase Elite Model Management.

In one 2011 email from the Epstein files released by the DOJ, the pedophile financier warned an Emirati businessman that ‘zampoli is trouble,’ misspelling his name.

In 2013, Zampolli was named as one of four partners in the TerraMar Project, the ocean charity founded by Epstein’s convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

No evidence has publicly connected Zampolli to Epstein’s crimes, and he has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein or Maxwell.

In March, The New York Times reported that Zampolli had contacted a senior ICE official last June after learning that Amanda Ungaro, his ex-wife and the mother of his teenage son, had been arrested on fraud charges in Florida.

Zampolli allegedly suggested that her immigration detention could help him win their custody battle.

Ungaro, whose visa had expired years earlier, was picked up by ICE agents before she could post bail and was ultimately deported to Brazil, though the Times noted she may have faced removal regardless of his involvement.

Zampolli denied seeking her detention or deportation, saying he had only asked about the process, and the Department of Homeland Security said she was removed because of her expired visa and the fraud charges.

Trump appointed Zampolli to the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees in 2020, and in his envoy role he has crisscrossed the globe promoting sports diplomacy and brokering deals, including mineral and aircraft agreements with Uzbekistan.

The envoy position has never been publicly defined, and no financial disclosure for Zampolli has been made publicly available.

Joseph D McBride, attorney for Andrew and Tristan Tate, told the Daily Mail: ‘I am not going to confirm or deny anything. What I will say is this: Washington knows that Andrew and Tristan Tate’s ability to influence the next election is unmatched.

‘Republicans and Democrats love them. Both parties are inviting them to all kinds of interesting events because both parties understand the same thing: the Tate brothers command the loyalty of millions of young men and a growing number of women. All of them vote.’

The State Department has been contacted for comment.

Virginia Creeper Trail Reopens: US Forest Service Inspires Outdoors Revival

DAMASCUS, Va. (WJHL) — The iconic Virginia Creeper Trail is set to fully reopen to the public on March 31, 2027, as announced by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Forest Service shared in a statement on Thursday that this reopening timeline allows adequate time for the repaired trail to stabilize during the winter months, promising a safe and enjoyable experience as the spring recreation season kicks off.

“This trail is part of the heartbeat of our community,” expressed Ed Wright, district ranger for the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. “Ensuring the trail is safe and ready for the community is central to our work. When you see how much the town depends on the trail, knowing that it’s up to us to get it repaired and reopened responsibly, it’s an incredible responsibility.”

A devastating blow struck in September 2024 when Hurricane Helene destroyed approximately 17 miles of the path stretching between Damascus and White Mountain.

The section between Abingdon and Damascus was reopened around two weeks after the hurricane hit.

Last November, the U.S. Forest Service awarded Kiewit Corporation a $240 million contract to rebuild the destroyed portion of the trail.

Nantucket Official’s DUI Drama Unfolds in Bodycam Footage

A newly unveiled video reveals the arrest of a Nantucket official on allegations of driving under the influence with alcohol present in her vehicle after a collision with a street sign.

Bodycam footage from the Yarmouth Police Department captures Leslie Snell, the town Planning Director of Nantucket, Massachusetts, appearing to have difficulty with sobriety tests. Officers responded on April 20 after Snell allegedly crashed into a street sign, as reported by the Nantucket Current.

Upon exiting her Jeep, Snell admitted to an officer that she had consumed “just a couple of drinks” at Giardino’s, a local establishment, as shown in the video from the bodycam.

The video also reveals a bottle of vodka and a box of White Claws inside the vehicle.

A police report states that Snell was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Snell reached a plea agreement on April 21 that puts the driving under the influence charge on hold for one year without a formal finding. Under the deal, she must surrender her driver’s license for 45 days, complete an alcohol education course and pay $600 in fines.

According to a police report, Yarmouth police officer Samantha Voltolini said Snell’s eyes were “blood shot.”

“I observed her to have glassy blood shot eyes,” Voltolini said. “I also observed a moderate odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. I then went over to the driver’s side to speak with her. I then observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath.”

Voltolini could be heard telling Snell that Giardino’s was only around 100 yards away.

“I attempted to explain to (Snell) that Giardino’s was only a short ways away and I was confused about how she ended up in the parking lot of the Transmission Specialists,” Voltolini wrote in the report. “I asked her where she lived. She informed me Nantucket. I asked if she had a place in town she said, ‘yes.’ I asked whereabouts, but she could not inform me. (Snell) named ‘North Troy’ as the location she was attempting to go to. It was difficult to gain information from Woodson due to her speaking incoherently. I asked Woodson if she needed any medical attention, but she refused.”

During the field sobriety tests, according to the report and body camera video, Snell swayed from side to side and was unbalanced.

In a comment to The Inquirer and Mirror after being arrested, Snell said, “I deeply regret the event that occurred off-island on April 20 while I was attending to personal commitments. I accept full responsibility for my actions and the matter has been resolved.”

News Media reached out to Snell for comment.
