Tate Brothers Accused of Rape Spark Outrage in D.C. After Shocking Elite Club Photo Surfaces

0

Influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, currently embroiled in legal challenges over accusations of rape and sex-trafficking in both the UK and Romania, were recently spotted in Washington, D.C. They were there at the invitation of Donald Trump’s special envoy, Paolo Zampolli.

Zampolli, who once managed a modeling agency and played a key role in introducing Donald Trump to Melania, shared with the Daily Mail that he hosted the Tates at a summer gathering. This event took place on Wednesday at a house in Northwest Washington, D.C., drawing around 150 attendees.

When questioned about the possible links between the event and his State Department responsibilities, the 56-year-old confidently dismissed the notion, stating, “Why would I do that? This was a summer gathering.”

While Zampolli admitted he wasn’t clear on the exact reason for the brothers’ visit to the city, he mentioned to the Daily Mail that “they’re having some business meetings.”

Additionally, on Tuesday, Zampolli escorted the notorious duo to the Ned, an exclusive private members’ club located near the White House and frequented by cabinet secretaries. The Tates’ presence reportedly shocked club members, leading to complaints being lodged with management, numerous insiders revealed to the Daily Mail.

‘They were mostly smoking cigars outside the club,’ a source said, and the pair left at around 11pm and went out for a drink afterward. ‘People in the administration were scared to be seen with Tate,’ he added.

The Tate brothers deny all allegations against them and are yet to face trial.

Zampolli was named special envoy for global partnerships in March 2025, a role that operates through the State Department.

‘Paolo routinely comes into conflict with State Department leadership, who are embarrassed by him,’ a State Department source told the Daily Mail.

Now Zampolli has attached himself to two of the most polarizing figures in the Trump-aligned media world, introducing the Tates to Washington’s political elite.

The Tate brothers also made their way to Capitol Hill to rub elbows with Republican lawmakers.

A photo obtained by the Daily Mail shows the pair posing with Texas Representative Wesley Hunt in his congressional office.

The meeting came together after Tristan Tate reached out to Hunt through the congressman’s social media aide.

‘Wesley was beyond excited to meet with them,’ said a source in Hunt’s office familiar with the meeting.

Once inside, the brothers bragged about their time in a Romanian prison, including doing 100 push-ups every day, according to the source.

Hunt, a Houston congressman and Army veteran who took office in 2023 and brands himself one of Trump’s earliest and most loyal backers in Congress, finished a distant third in this year’s Republican Senate primary in Texas.

The Daily Mail contacted Hunt for comment.

The brothers arrived in the capital carrying heavy baggage. Andrew and Tristan were arrested in Romania in December 2022 and charged in June 2023 with human trafficking and forming an organized crime group to sexually exploit women. Andrew was additionally charged with rape.

Romanian prosecutors in August 2024 expanded the case against them to include money laundering, witness intimidation and complicity in the trafficking of minors.

British prosecutors filed 21 charges of their own against the brothers in May 2025, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking.

Romanian courts have ruled the pair will be extradited to the United Kingdom once proceedings in Romania conclude.

The brothers have denied all charges and allegations against them.

The Tates flew from Romania to Florida in February 2025 after authorities lifted their travel ban, a reversal that followed reported pressure from Trump administration figures. Trump told reporters he knew ‘nothing about it.’

ProPublica later reported that a White House official intervened to have federal agents return electronic devices seized from the brothers when they landed in Florida.

This week’s gathering was not Zampolli’s first encounter with the brothers: he and Andrew were seen together on the sidelines of the Milken Institute Global Conference in May, and the two recently recorded a lengthy interview together.

It is unclear whether further meetings or parties for the brothers in Washington are planned later this week.

Zampolli's decades in New York's fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein, the sex offender, and Ghislaine Maxwell

Zampolli’s decades in New York’s fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein, the sex offender, and Ghislaine Maxwell

Zampolli’s place in Trump’s world was cemented in September 1998, after he says he introduced the future president to Melania Knauss at a New York party, two years after his modeling agency, ID Model Management, sponsored her US visa.

Zampolli’s decades in New York’s fashion and society worlds also placed him squarely in the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein was a patron of ID Model Management, and in 2004 he was a partner in Zampolli’s unsuccessful bid to purchase Elite Model Management.

In one 2011 email from the Epstein files released by the DOJ, the pedophile financier warned an Emirati businessman that ‘zampoli is trouble,’ misspelling his name.

In 2013, Zampolli was named as one of four partners in the TerraMar Project, the ocean charity founded by Epstein’s convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

No evidence has publicly connected Zampolli to Epstein’s crimes, and he has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein or Maxwell.

In March, The New York Times reported that Zampolli had contacted a senior ICE official last June after learning that Amanda Ungaro, his ex-wife and the mother of his teenage son, had been arrested on fraud charges in Florida.

Zampolli allegedly suggested that her immigration detention could help him win their custody battle.

Ungaro, whose visa had expired years earlier, was picked up by ICE agents before she could post bail and was ultimately deported to Brazil, though the Times noted she may have faced removal regardless of his involvement.

Zampolli denied seeking her detention or deportation, saying he had only asked about the process, and the Department of Homeland Security said she was removed because of her expired visa and the fraud charges.

Trump appointed Zampolli to the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees in 2020, and in his envoy role he has crisscrossed the globe promoting sports diplomacy and brokering deals, including mineral and aircraft agreements with Uzbekistan.

The envoy position has never been publicly defined, and no financial disclosure for Zampolli has been made publicly available.

Joseph D McBride, attorney for Andrew and Tristan Tate, told the Daily Mail: ‘I am not going to confirm or deny anything. What I will say is this: Washington knows that Andrew and Tristan Tate’s ability to influence the next election is unmatched.

‘Republicans and Democrats love them. Both parties are inviting them to all kinds of interesting events because both parties understand the same thing: the Tate brothers command the loyalty of millions of young men and a growing number of women. All of them vote.’

The State Department has been contacted for comment.

Virginia Creeper Trail Reopens: US Forest Service Inspires Outdoors Revival

DAMASCUS, Va. (WJHL) — The iconic Virginia Creeper Trail is set to fully reopen to the public on March 31, 2027, as announced by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Forest Service shared in a statement on Thursday that this reopening timeline allows adequate time for the repaired trail to stabilize during the winter months, promising a safe and enjoyable experience as the spring recreation season kicks off.

“This trail is part of the heartbeat of our community,” expressed Ed Wright, district ranger for the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. “Ensuring the trail is safe and ready for the community is central to our work. When you see how much the town depends on the trail, knowing that it’s up to us to get it repaired and reopened responsibly, it’s an incredible responsibility.”

A devastating blow struck in September 2024 when Hurricane Helene destroyed approximately 17 miles of the path stretching between Damascus and White Mountain.

The section between Abingdon and Damascus was reopened around two weeks after the hurricane hit.

Last November, the U.S. Forest Service awarded Kiewit Corporation a $240 million contract to rebuild the destroyed portion of the trail.

Nantucket Official’s DUI Drama Unfolds in Bodycam Footage

A newly unveiled video reveals the arrest of a Nantucket official on allegations of driving under the influence with alcohol present in her vehicle after a collision with a street sign.

Bodycam footage from the Yarmouth Police Department captures Leslie Snell, the town Planning Director of Nantucket, Massachusetts, appearing to have difficulty with sobriety tests. Officers responded on April 20 after Snell allegedly crashed into a street sign, as reported by the Nantucket Current.

Upon exiting her Jeep, Snell admitted to an officer that she had consumed “just a couple of drinks” at Giardino’s, a local establishment, as shown in the video from the bodycam.

The video also reveals a bottle of vodka and a box of White Claws inside the vehicle.

A police report states that Snell was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Snell reached a plea agreement on April 21 that puts the driving under the influence charge on hold for one year without a formal finding. Under the deal, she must surrender her driver’s license for 45 days, complete an alcohol education course and pay $600 in fines.

According to a police report, Yarmouth police officer Samantha Voltolini said Snell’s eyes were “blood shot.”

“I observed her to have glassy blood shot eyes,” Voltolini said. “I also observed a moderate odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. I then went over to the driver’s side to speak with her. I then observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath.”

Voltolini could be heard telling Snell that Giardino’s was only around 100 yards away.

“I attempted to explain to (Snell) that Giardino’s was only a short ways away and I was confused about how she ended up in the parking lot of the Transmission Specialists,” Voltolini wrote in the report. “I asked her where she lived. She informed me Nantucket. I asked if she had a place in town she said, ‘yes.’ I asked whereabouts, but she could not inform me. (Snell) named ‘North Troy’ as the location she was attempting to go to. It was difficult to gain information from Woodson due to her speaking incoherently. I asked Woodson if she needed any medical attention, but she refused.”

During the field sobriety tests, according to the report and body camera video, Snell swayed from side to side and was unbalanced.

In a comment to The Inquirer and Mirror after being arrested, Snell said, “I deeply regret the event that occurred off-island on April 20 while I was attending to personal commitments. I accept full responsibility for my actions and the matter has been resolved.”

News Media reached out to Snell for comment.

Father Faces Murder Charge Following Tragic Fire That Killed Two-Year-Old Son

0

A tragic turn of events has led to the arrest of a Kansas man, suspected of murder, following the heartbreaking loss of his two-year-old son in a catastrophic house fire earlier this year.

James Crump, a 33-year-old father, found himself in custody on Tuesday, facing serious charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child endangerment. These charges are linked to the untimely death of his young son, Elijah Crump.

The tragic incident unfolded on January 26, when a devastating fire consumed the family’s rural home nestled in Dickinson County, Kansas, which lies to the west of Topeka near the geographical heart of the state.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:48 p.m. Upon their arrival, the home was already fully ablaze, as reported by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officers encountered James Crump with another child outside the fiery structure. It was then revealed that little Elijah remained trapped inside, marking the beginning of this heartbreaking tragedy.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control, and upon searching the wreckage, they discovered the toddler’s body.

On Monday, after an investigation that lasted almost six months, Dickinson County Attorney Brock Abbey submitted a criminal complaint against James, and the court issued a warrant for the father’s arrest the next day.

The warrant, which was reviewed by the Daily Mail, alleged that James murdered his son by causing or recklessly allowing a situation that put his son’s life in danger, which it is understood referred to the fire.

The warrant did not detail how police suspect James caused or allowed the fire.

Abbey, the county attorney, declined to comment or provide additional information when the Daily Mail reached out, citing his office’s policy regarding pending litigation.

James was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, where he is being held on a $250,000 cash bond, according to the jail’s records.

The father had his first appearance in court at 11am on Thursday. Judge Neal Gugler presided over the hearing at Dickinson County Court.

It appears that James has not yet hired an attorney, and it is unclear whether he has pleaded guilty or not guilty.

In early February, shortly after the fire that claimed the toddler’s life the month before, neighbor Pat MacDonald described the scene and locals’ reactions to KSNW.

‘It was terrifying to look out the window and see all those flashing red and white lights and the blaze in the house, but so many people came,’ she said.

‘The community is pulling for this family,’ she added at the time.

‘Elijah probably is more blessed than we actually know because he is in heaven, and he is our Saint Elijah now.’

The case continues.

Oaks Ministries Transforms Augusta Youth with Life-Changing Community Service Opportunities

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – In a fascinating installment of Your Hometown Roadtrip, the team connected with the dedicated individuals at Oaks Ministries to delve into their impactful community work.

Understanding Oaks Ministries

“Operating as a local non-profit in Augusta, Georgia, our mission centers on empowering students in Downtown Augusta to emerge as Christ-focused leaders. Our goal is for them to bring hope and transformation to their communities via the Gospel. We primarily achieve this through after-school and summer programs. These initiatives are based out of two key locations: Walton Oaks and Walton Green. Additionally, we run various outreach and mentorship programs tailored for middle and high school students,” explained Co-Director, Stephen Pitman.

What Lessons do Kids Take Away from These Programs?

“A rewarding aspect of our long-term involvement is encountering former students now in their late 20s. When we see them around town, they often recount how they always felt loved and safe with us. This feedback is incredibly meaningful. It’s also remarkable that some past students have returned to work with us as staff or volunteers. Today, their own children are part of our programs, marking the beginning of a second generation. I cherish the work we do and the tangible impact we’ve observed through our efforts,” reflected Pitman.

How do kids get involved with this program?

“For our Walton communities, we partner with Walton Communities, Walton Green here off of 15th Street of Walton Oaks, off of Sandbar Ferry. So, for our after school program they are residents of Walton Communities, and it’s offered to the residents, and as well we have an outreach program on Thursday nights for elementary students where students from the East Boundary, and Laney Walker areas, and then we have a mentorship program on Tuesday nights for kids from Walton communities, East Boundary, Laney Walker areas, and really it use to be that me and Mike would just go through the neighborhoods, build relationships, knock on doors, and now it’s just word of mouth. Kids telling other kids about us, parents telling other parents about us. So, they can reach out to us and sign up.”

What’s it like getting to see so many positive things happening?

“I think it’s very encouraging. I tell people as long as my hair keep growing, I’m going to keep doing this. I’ve been doing this for about 13 years, and I think one of the most rewarding things is seeing the students being engaged, seeing how they love what we’re doing, and that they love the support that we give them ,” said Co-Director Mike Rosser.

Why do you think it’s important to have this kind of program?

“I think that everyone needs some extra support, it takes a village to raise a child, so we’re all here, we’re not here to be the parents, we ‘re here to partner with the parents, and to provide a safe and Christ centered welcome, loving space for kids to come, and we want to see them. The reason we’re Oaks Ministries is we want to see them flourish and become oaks of righteousness in Christ, and we want to see them flourish in every area of their life. Academically, spiritually, physically, mentally, and we believe that’s important for any child,” said Pittman.

How do you want kids feeling after they leave out of here?

“I think first, most importantly I want them to know they are loved. Both by Christ, and by our staff. One of our values is we want to affirm students and their gifts, and who they are, and so we want them to walk out that door being confident in who God has created them to be, and the gifts and talents that they have.”

The Your Hometown Roadtrip team wants to thank Oaks Ministries for their continued work in the community.

Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman Secures New Contract Extension

In a significant move, the University of Illinois has solidified the future of its athletic department by extending the contract of its athletic director, Josh Whitman. This agreement was officially endorsed on Thursday, further anchoring Whitman’s tenure.

The University’s System Board of Trustees gave their nod to a revised long-term contract for Whitman on July 16. As highlighted in the meeting agenda, the Governance, Personnel, and Ethics Committee had already evaluated this proposal prior to the board’s approval.

This new arrangement extends Whitman’s leadership at the Illini until June 30, 2036. Starting at $2.15 million for the 2026-2027 period, his compensation will increase annually by $100,000, culminating with a $200,000 hike in his final year, taking his earnings to $3.15 million by the end of the term.

A lucrative annual retention bonus sweetens the deal for Whitman, offering a $500,000 incentive for each year he remains until the end of June.

Additionally, the contract features performance-based bonuses, capped at $500,000 yearly, further incentivizing excellence and commitment to the university’s athletic successes.

Up to three one-year performance based contract incentives could also be earned by Whitman, based on success of the Illinois men’s basketball and football programs. These extensions, from those two sports, may not go beyond 2039, according to the proposed document.

The document also states Whitman should receive 100% of his base salary if he were to be terminated without cause from his role at Illinois athletic director.

Notably, the deal, consistent with his previous contract, prohibits Whitman from accepting a job with any other college or university at any time during his employment agreement with Illinois.

In over 10 years in the role, Whitman has overhauled and brought success to a number of Illini sports programs through hirings of head coaches like Brad Underwood, Bret Bielema and Shauna Green.

The most recent athletic season saw the men’s basketball team reach its first Final Four since the 2004-05 season, the football team win a bowl game for the second consecutive season, and the women’s basketball team notch a NCAA Tournament win in its second straight year.

In 2024-25, for the first time in nearly 25 years, the Illini football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs were all ranked in the AP Top 25 at the same time. The football team also tied its single season best in school history with 10 wins — just the fifth time that feat has been accomplished in the program’s 134-year history.

Illinois was also only one of five schools last year to win a postseason bowl game and win games in both the men’s and women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments. And of those five schools, Whitman is the only current AD to have hired all three of the involved head coaches.

New Jersey Meteorite Fragments Reveal Otherworldly Amino Acids Discovery

0

NEW JERSEY — A celestial visitor weighing over two pounds (1 kilogram) tore through a New Jersey home’s roof two years ago and holds the potential to reveal secrets about ancient water in our solar system.

On July 16, 2024, residents across the northeastern United States—encompassing New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania—witnessed a daytime spectacle as a fiery object blazed across the sky. This fireball careened just south of the Statue of Liberty, leaving in its wake a sonic boom that reverberated through New York City and much of New Jersey.

This dramatic event was caused by a meteorite, akin to the heft of a loaded airline suitcase, which rocketed through our atmosphere at an astounding 32,000 miles per hour (14.4 kilometers per second).

Not just any space rock, this particular meteorite was unusually fragile, shattering approximately 22 miles (35.4 kilometers) aboveground. The fragments were subsequently tracked by Doppler weather radar at Newark Liberty International Airport, tracing their descent from Staten Island into New Jersey.

Amid this cosmic disassembly, a single fragment survived the fiery journey, making a dramatic entry into a master bedroom in Hillsborough, New Jersey, by crashing through its ceiling.

The impact caused no injuries, and the homeowners quickly put on disposable gloves and collected the black fragments and dust from the bed and carpet using aluminum foil and glass jars, said Peter Jenniskens, senior research scientist at the SETI Institute and NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley.

Jenniskens is the lead author of a study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances that detailed an analysis of the Hillsborough meteorite.

The homeowners also patched the roof of their house before rain fell that evening – a crucial step because the fragile meteor is porous and sucks in water from the air, Jenniskens said.

Such quick thinking prevented the meteorite from being overly contaminated. Scientists were able to study the object. The analysis revealed it to be a rare, primitive type of meteorite that provides a window into the early solar system.

“We detected a complex suite of amino acids, the fundamental building blocks of proteins, in water extracts of the Hillsborough meteorite,” said study coauthor Dr. Danny Glavin, senior scientist for the Sample Return in the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Most of the amino acids detected in Hillsborough are rare or nonexistent in life on Earth, so they are truly extraterrestrial in origin.”

A salty, cosmic time capsule

A detailed analysis of the Hillsborough meteorite showed it was a CM-type carbonaceous chondrite. The C stands for carbonaceous, while the M signifies the Mighei meteorite, a carbonaceous chondrite that fell in Ukraine in 1889.
These space rocks are remnants of rocky bodies that were streaking around during the early days of the solar system and contain hydrated minerals and organic compounds.

There are two types of primitive CM meteorites – CM1 and CM2 – and the biggest difference between them is how much water altered their composition while they were attached to a larger asteroid.
The researchers classified the Hillsborough meteorite as a CM since it exists as an intermediate between the two types. The sample marks only the second time a CM meteorite has been witnessed falling to Earth, Jenniskens noted, but it’s the first one that researchers have been able to study in such a pristine sample. Similar meteorites that fell in Indonesia in 2020 dropped into the mud, Jenniskens said.

“It is the first CM type meteorite that contained bits of rock that preserved the subsurface of the original asteroid,” Jenniskens said via email. “We really have a unique window here on the physical properties of the parent asteroid.”
The Hillsborough meteorite may have once belonged to a larger space rock orbiting within the inner asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

“Some time ago, a significant asteroid family was formed in a large collision and some 6 Myr ago a smaller collision destroyed one of these asteroids, from which a piece ended up in near-Earth orbit,” Jenniskens wrote. “That piece experienced heat/cold cycles from spinning in the sunlight and fragmented about 200,000 years ago. Then it still took that long to hit the small target of Earth.”

Researchers detected high abundances of sodium, likely from icy brines within the original asteroid. As water evaporated on the space rock, it left behind concentrated salt minerals that could create molecules crucial for life as we know it, according to the researchers.

The team also detected organic carbon and complex amino acids.

“There are hundreds of amino acids in this meteorite and the majority of them do not occur naturally on Earth,” Glavin wrote in an email. “The suite of amino acids in Hillsborough was even more diverse than those found in pristine samples returned from the carbon-rich asteroids Bennu and Ryugu.”

The researchers are working to identify the salt minerals within the Hillsborough meteorite and see how they compare with those identified in samples collected from Bennu and Ryugu during NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission in 2020 and Japan’s Hayabusa2 mission in 2019, respectively.

Fragments of the Hillsborough meteorite are being curated at the American Museum for Natural History in New York City.

Delivering the ingredients for life

Primitive carbonaceous chondrites are believed to be the type of space rocks that collided with early Earth and delivered organic matter.

The Hillsborough meteorite “provides more evidence that meteorite delivery of organic matter to the early Earth could have been an important source of organic molecules necessary for the origin of life,” Glavin said.

The discovery of brine on the asteroid is key, said Peter Brown, professor in the department of physics and astronomy at Western University in London, Ontario, noting it’s kind of a leftover “of percolating water or ice.” Brown was not involved in the study.

The brine “is a really strong sort of indicator of how water has moved, evolved and in particular how it’s reacted with organics,” Brown told CNN.

“Everything we can learn about how water changes this kind of primitive meteorite is super important to sort of astrobiology and early biology on Earth.”

Water may have been preserved beneath the surface of the Hillsborough meteorite’s parent asteroid for an extended period, he said.

Meteorites such as the Hillsborough one contain the chemistry of the early solar system because, while modified by water, they haven’t endured much heating, Brown said. Holding a meteorite like it feels more like soil or clay that falls apart, rather than a solid rock, which reflects its lack of exposure to heat – and a higher chance of preserving a snapshot of how water interacted with minerals and organics, he added.

The swift, informed actions of the homeowners enabled the detection of the brine in the first place, Brown noted. Rainfall likely caused any additional meteorite fragments that fell outside to disintegrate.

The homeowners quickly connected with study coauthor Mike Hankey at the American Meteor Society, who guided them through preserving the sample and minimizing contamination.

“We knew almost immediately that what happened to us was incredibly rare and we felt a responsibility to preserve the meteorite for the scientific community,” the homeowners, who wished to remain anonymous to protect their privacy, shared via email. “It’s still surreal to think that this meteorite traveled through space for millions of years before ending its journey in our home. The entire experience has been incredible, and we’re honored to have played a small part in advancing scientific understanding through its study.”

Reporting doorbell or dashcam videos of potential fireball sightings can help researchers track and collect meteorites – and ultimately improve their understanding of how the solar system evolved.

Shocking Video: Teens Attack Elderly Man in Baltimore 7-Eleven

In a particularly alarming moment, the video shows one suspect apparently aiming what seems to be an assault rifle at the victim while another suspect ominously points a sword at him, as revealed by police.

The attack follows an announcement Baltimore’s Democratic mayor, Brandon M. Scott, made about the reported drop in violent crime in the city.

Scott’s office noted the city has seen 50 homicides so far this year.

“This total represents the fewest homicides ever recorded in Baltimore through the first six months of a calendar year. Compared to this date last year, Baltimore has seen a 23.1% decrease in homicides and a 2.5% decrease in non-fatal shootings,” the announcement reported.

As for the 7-Eleven incident, Baltimore Police confirmed to News Media that “the victim sustained minor bruising from the assault.”

Police could not confirm if suspects were involved in other related crimes in the city.

The investigation is ongoing.

NYC’s Smoky Air: Inhaling Equivalent to 10 Cigarettes, Experts Warn

Taking a breath outdoors is akin to inhaling a cigarette puff.

Breathing the smoke-filled air in New York City for just three hours on Thursday could be equivalent to smoking 2.5 cigarettes, according to an expert’s alarming revelation.

The air in New York City has reached “unhealthy” levels, a consequence of wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada and the Great Lakes. This has led officials to advise residents to stay indoors for their safety.

“It’s fair to say that merely breathing the air in New York City today is like smoking ten cigarettes,” Michael Petroni, a seasoned pollution expert and former EPA employee, shared with The Post regarding spending an entire day outside.

All five boroughs have been under an Air Quality Health Advisory since Wednesday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has been stuck between 151 and 200 — significantly above the 0-50 range that is considered “good,” as stated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

That means there are “unhealthy” levels of dust, dirt, soot, smoke and other toxins in the air that New Yorkers would typically only ingest by lighting a few cigarettes.

“The rule of thumb is about 20 AQI points for a whole day equals one cigarette,” explained Petroni, who worked for the EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.

While it may not sound nefarious, that exposure could be chipping away at New Yorkers’ lifespans.

The AQI measures particulate matter, which includes toxins ranging from heavy metals to aerosol droplets and other carcinogens that are invisible to the naked eye.

“They get into your bloodstream because they’re so small and they wreak havoc on your immune system. Over time, that adds up and it increases your likelihood of cancer, of heart disease,” said Petroni, who is currently working on an app that measures the air quality on a day-to-day basis.

Short term stays outdoors can also pose risks, he continued.

New Yorkers can expect itchy eyes, lethargy, inflammation, mucus build-up, headaches, shortness of breath and other symptoms.

“If you go for a run today, you’re gonna notice it really hard. You’re not gonna be able to run as fast. You’re gonna get tired very quickly. Your heart’s gonna race … Your body’s just trying to rush to like clear it all out, and it can’t very quickly,” said Petroni.

The good news is that New Yorkers can reduce their risk by simply staying indoors.

Air purification systems and air conditioning units can clear out the polluted air.

The city is also giving out free K95 masks to those who need to venture outdoors — the masks have up to a 95% pollution prevention rate, said Petroni.
