The Myth That Became Legend: How One Mistaken Sighting Changed Australia’s Animal Lore

0

Back in 1941, in the quaint village of Milton nestled in southern New South Wales, a resident claimed to witness an extraordinary scene— a greater glider, one of Australia’s native ‘flying marsupials,’ was said to have gracefully soared through the night, eventually touching down a full 100 meters away.

This intriguing sighting sparked what would become a widespread myth shrouding the abilities of the greater glider, a member of the 10 glider species indigenous to Australia.

“It was actually a case of mistaken identity that persisted over the years,” explained Dr. Ana Gracanin in an interview with SBS News. “There simply isn’t any detailed dataset or concrete empirical evidence to back up that story.”

“What they had really seen was a yellow-bellied glider,” she added.

Determined to set the record straight, Gracanin, a dedicated researcher at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University, embarked on a mission alongside her team to accurately measure the actual glide distance of the greater glider for the very first time.

The southern greater glider, named ‘great’ because of its size, soared an average of only 19.1m, or less than a quarter the distance it was once assumed.

The researchers say their findings have big implications for the conservation of the endangered species.

‘We have a Gary’

Gracanin spent hours in the forest at night with infrared cameras and torches, becoming familiar with the individual gliders and their favourite tree dents.

“My friends have a joke because they all look very similar … whenever there’s a glider, we’d be like ‘It’s Gary! We have a Gary!'”

black-and-white night vision image of a greater glider looking like an adorable furball hunched over a branch in a tree with its long tail dropping down.

It’s unclear what the total population of southern greater gliders is, but scientists estimate their population declined by 80 per cent after the Black Summer bushfires.

In 2022, they were listed as an endangered species.

“Often they’re very high up in the canopies, but if you put your binoculars to your eyes you can very quickly tell if it’s a greater glider,” Gracinan said.

“It has huge fluffy ears, a very funny gremlin-y face, and they have a very long fluffy tail … They’re just a big ball of fluff.”

“And if you’re really lucky, you might see a glide.”

Recording data on the southern greater gliders’ movements for the first time, Gracinan and her team found they climbed an average of 22m before launching themselves at a 43.5 degree angle at a nearby tree.

They made it to their destination with an average of 4.7m ground clearance.

“It kind of goes into a Superman pose and has its hands under its chin … like a black furry flying carpet shape that goes through the sky, and the tail is spinning left, right, left to stabilize.”

The longest glide they recorded was 47m. But the average distance was well short of that, at 19.1m.

The distance fell short of the glider record, which was set by a yellow-bellied glider which travelled 145m.

‘Sensitive little guys’

The southern greater glider’s inability to glide long distances puts them at greater risk of becoming isolated from the rest of the population, and of extinction.

“They’re restricted to their little territories, their gliding ability and their diet,” Gracanin said.

They roam forest canopies ranging from northern NSW down to Victoria.

Habitat loss means greater gliders struggle to find mature old-growth trees to nestle in the hollows, which can take years to form.

Meanwhile, sustained hot temperatures from climate-change-induced heatwaves cause greater gliders to lose their appetite.

“They don’t eat for a few days and die of starvation, even though the food is right there,” Gracanin said.

“They’re sensitive little guys, but it’s because they’ve adapted to a really amazing life up in the canopy.”

Researchers say the data will help conservationists plan wildlife corridors, stone habitats and gliding poles that take the gliders’ shorter reach into consideration.

“For gliding poles, for example, we can make sure they’re spaced apart in a way that allows greater gliders to readily use them.”

Although they are hard to spot, Gracanin recommended eager greater glider spotters to visit national parks known for their habitat with patience and a torch held at eye level.

“You’ll see the reflection of their eyes when you hold the light near your eyes,” she said.

“They’re just incredible to behold.”

Sam Neill’s Heartfelt Legacy: Manager Confirms Beloved Actor’s Passing at 78

0

Beloved actor Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78 due to complications from pneumonia, according to recently confirmed reports.

His manager, Philip Grenz, revealed to TMZ that the star of Jurassic Park had ultimately succumbed to the illness.

Neill’s health journey included a successful battle against lymphoma, treated with the innovative CAR-T therapy, a fact highlighted by Grenz in his statement to the media.

In a candid announcement made in 2023, Neill shared his diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and formidable form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He passed away on Monday in Sydney, as confirmed in a statement posted on his social media accounts.

Describing his passing as both “sudden and unexpected,” the family’s statement assured that Neill was “cancer-free” when he died. Although the precise cause of death was not immediately disclosed, those closest to him noted that he was “surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that had been the hallmark of his life.”

Neill had worked on four consecutive projects in the past year, his manager told the outlet, noting that they are expected to be released in the next few months.

Following announcement of Neill’s passing, tributes were paid by fellow actors and directors, including Steven Spielberg, who helmed the first Jurassic Park movie.

‘I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world,’ Spielberg said in a statement.

Actor Sharon Lawrence wrote on Instagram: ‘Condolences and appreciation for the immense joy and mastery Sam Neill brought our industry.’

Neill was one of a host of actors and directors who achieved international fame after an explosion of Australian films that began in the late 1970s, along with Paul Hogan, Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Jane Campion, Peter Weir and Gillian Armstrong.

His range was remarkable, playing opposite Helena Bonham Carter in the Alan Ayckbourn comedy Sweet Revenge to chopping off Hunter’s finger in The Piano to poking his own eyes out in the sci-fi horror Event Horizon.

He portrayed both saintly and sinner: In Omen III: The Final Conflict, he played Damien the Antichrist, and he also played Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in The Tudors.

The actor first came to the attention of international audiences in Armstrong’s 1979 film My Brilliant Career, which also introduced Judy Davis. He later appeared in Phillip Noyce’s Dead Calm, a classy thriller set at sea and co-starring the then-relatively unknown Nicole Kidman.

Neill twice co-starred with Meryl Streep, in Australian director Fred Schepisi’s Plenty  and – again for Schepisi – in A Cry in the Dark, a film about the sensationalized aftermath of a dingo killing a baby in the Australian Outback.

He earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of the 1998 miniseries Merlin and another as narrator of 2017’s Wild New Zealand.

Neill also earned three Golden Globe nods – for Merlin, One Against the Wind and Reilly: Ace of Spies.

Richard E. Grant, a longtime friend who co-starred with Neill in 2019’s Palm Beach,  described him in a post on Instagram as ‘an officer and a gentleman in the truest sense.’

Grant said Neill had ‘guided and helped me through a very difficult time in my life.’

Perhaps Neill achieved his highest level of fame in Jurassic Park, playing paleontologist Alan Grant, who is summoned to an island off Costa Rica where a theme park has been built to house herds of cloned dinosaurs.

His character was thoughtful and reasonable, a scientist who warned the mastermind of the theme park before the chaos: ‘Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?’

Grant survived the harrowing events when the creatures get loose, but didn’t return for The Lost World: Jurassic Park II in 1997. He came back for the third episode in 2001 and Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022.

‘It’s probably a little late to learn these things,’ he told the New York Daily News in 2001, ‘but I finally feel I’ve worked out how to be an action hero. I’m happier with Grant this time. He’s gnarly and grizzled, but he looks like he knows what he’s doing.’

Louisiana Man Facing Death Penalty for Alleged Killing of Deputy U.S. Marshal

0

A tragic incident in Louisiana has led to a murder charge against a local man, marking a somber moment for law enforcement. Federal authorities revealed on Tuesday that a deputy U.S. marshal lost his life after a gunfire exchange erupted during an attempted arrest.

The confrontation began when law enforcement personnel arrived at the Alexandria residence of 48-year-old Clarence A. Frazier Jr. Their goal was to execute a warrant related to previous sexual battery accusations. However, Frazier reportedly fortified himself within his home, subsequently unleashing gunfire, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana.

With the charge of murdering a federal officer now looming over him, Frazier could face severe consequences, including a potential life sentence or even the death penalty, pending a guilty verdict.

Authorities have disclosed the identity of the deceased deputy U.S. marshal: Drew Hanson. He is remembered by officials not just for his commitment to his job but also for being a loving husband, father, and son.

Authorities identified the slain deputy U.S. marshal as Drew Hanson, whom officials described as a devoted husband, father and son.

“Tragically, the defendant’s alleged actions claimed the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who was simply doing his duty,” Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “The alleged perpetrator is now in custody and will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to officials, the shooting occurred July 13, after members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office located Frazier at his residence and obtained a search warrant for the property.

According to the federal criminal complaint, Frazier had failed to appear in state court to face trial on a charge of sexual battery of a person with infirmities.

After announcing their presence, law enforcement officers forced entry into the home, authorities said.

Frazier allegedly barricaded himself inside a bedroom and opened fire on the officers, striking Hanson.

Tyler Kolek Dreams of Hosting Hollywood Icon on Knicks’ Celebrity Row

0

New York Knicks’ point guard, Tyler Kolek, has expressed his hopes to see NFL icon Tom Brady make frequent appearances on the team’s celebrity row next season.

Speaking at the 2026 ESPY Awards held in New York City, Kolek mentioned to Page Six, “He’s been there before but he has to come more often,” referring to Brady’s previous attendance at two games in November 2024.

Kolek shared his personal fandom, saying, “I grew up a Patriots fan, when he left I kind of bandwagoned and went to the Buccaneers because I wasn’t really a Patriots fan, I was a Tom Brady fan.”

At 25, Kolek also commended the dedication of regular celebrity row attendees at Madison Square Garden, highlighting stars like Timothée Chalamet, Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, and Ben Stiller.

He specifically noted, “Chalamet was there last year throughout the whole playoff run so obviously we knew he was going to be here this year on the road, at home…,” acknowledging the consistent support of the “Marty Supreme” actor.

He added, “All the fans — Spike, Tracy, Ben — all those guys, they come to the home games, to the away games… It’s cool seeing all the support we get.”

As for taking home the championship — the first time since 1973 — he said, “It felt amazing, 53 years, we felt it. Not only did we [feel] it, but the whole city felt it, the whole fan base, so it’s been pretty special.”

But the team doesn’t plan to rest much in the off-season, as they have their eyes set on back-to-back championships.

“It starts right now, it starts in the summer,” Kolek said. “All the work we put in leading up to the season. … I know we play deep into the summer, but we’re getting back after it now.”

“We’re getting ready to go for next year,” he enthused.

Kolek wasn’t the only Knicks player to attend the 2026 ESPY Awards — which is presented by ESPN — as teammates Karl-Anthony Towns, Jalen Brunson, Jose Alvarado, Mikal Bridges also made appearances.

The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA finals.

The Knicks celebrated at the ticker-tape parade in Manhattan, where Kolek was hysterically mistaken for a fan when he tried to get back on his float.

He said, “I was just enjoying myself, having a good time… It’s all good!”

Celebrations following the victory at New York City hot spots included Flyfish Club, Chez Margaux and more.

Texas Kroger Store Shooting: Domestic Violence Incident Leaves Two Wounded

0

Shots echoed through a Kroger grocery store in Cypress, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon, according to Constable Mark Herman.

In Harris County, authorities reported that a domestic violence disturbance inside a Kroger in Cypress led to a shooting involving both a suspect and a victim, leaving both wounded.

Constable Mark Herman shared details of the incident on social media around 3 p.m. local time. The gunfire erupted at the Kroger situated at the crossroads of Mason Road and Cypresswood Drive, northwest of Houston, impacting multiple individuals.

Police reacted swiftly to the emergency. According to a spokesperson for Harris County Precinct 4, two men sustained gunshot wounds. One man managed to exit the store despite his injuries, while deputies discovered the other inside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a hospital for treatment.

An initial investigation suggested the incident originated from a domestic violence dispute, as Constable Herman later indicated through social media.

He said the victim is in serious condition and was taken from the scene by Life Flight, and that the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his neck. It was not clear how the suspect sustained the injury.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel were at the scene.

Herman advised people to avoid the area.

In a statement to KHOU, Kroger said they were “deeply saddened” by the shooting and were cooperating with local law enforcement.

Witness describes the shooting

A witness said he wasn’t exactly sure what was happening when the incident began inside the store.

“I was putting some food in the cart, and I heard a scream that sounded a little weird,” said Patrick Young. “First thought was it was just kids messing around in the store.”

Young said he quickly realized it wasn’t kids, but adults. That was when he heard the shots ring out.

“I just turned around and ran in the opposite direction of the gunfire and out through the front door along with multiple other people,” he said. “There were old ladies trying to scramble. There were terrified kids.”

He said once he got outside, he yelled at people that there was a shooter inside the store and called 911. He said the response was very fast.

“The cops were here, like, within one minute, and I’m really proud of them,” Young said. “All of them were just jumping out of the car and running straight into there. There was no hesitation.”

He said he was in the frozen section near the middle of the store when the shots rang out toward the back-right corner of the store.

Kate Upton’s Bold Blue Frock Misses the Mark at the 2026 ESPY Awards

0

On a bustling Wednesday evening, the Lincoln Center in New York City was transformed into a fashion spectacle for the 2026 ESPY Awards, attracting a mix of sports legends, athletic icons, and their glamorous partners. However, not all attendees shone brightly under the spotlight, as some fashion choices left much to be desired.

Among the fashion misses was none other than Sports Illustrated swimsuit star Kate Upton. Known for her dazzling displays of style, she surprised many by choosing a rather dull royal-blue dress, straying away from her usual high-fashion allure.

Kate Upton, who is the wife of baseball’s own Justin Verlander, seemingly aimed for an elegant and understated appearance, yet her outfit did not quite hit the mark she usually sets.

While some stars opted for eye-popping, flamboyant outfits, others missed the mark entirely with their mundane choices. This unfortunate fashion faux pas secured NFL luminary Russell Wilson and ice skating sensation Madison Chock positions on the evening’s worst-dressed compilation.

The ESPY Awards, heralded as a cornerstone event in the sporting world, kicked off live at 8pm EST on ABC, promising an evening of both athletic celebration and unexpected sartorial statements.

Hosted by Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández, the ESPYs honor individual and team athletic achievements across the pro sports industry.

Maggie Sajak Shares Her Thoughts on Boyfriend Jackson Olson Joining Dancing With the Stars

How Maggie Sajak Reacts to Boyfriend Jackson Olson’s ‘DWTS’ Role (Exclusive)

Dancing With the Stars truly hit a home run with the casting of Jackson Olson.

At least, that’s the enthusiastic sentiment from his girlfriend, Maggie Sajak. As the daughter of the former Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak, Maggie couldn’t be prouder of Jackson’s exhilarating move into the limelight of DWTS for its 35th season this fall.

“He’s unstoppable when he puts his mind to something,” she shared exclusively with USA Sports’ Renee Montgomery at the ESPYS 2026 event in New York on July 15. “I’m thrilled to watch him shine in the ballroom.”

Maggie, who made their relationship public on Instagram in April, intends to support him all the way as the Savannah Bananas baseball star joins the dance floor with fellow contestants like Ciara Miller, Maura Higgins, and Guillermo Rodriguez, along with others awaiting announcement.

“I’m just so excited to support him through this whole journey,” Maggie added. “It’s going to be amazing.”

And the journey will be a bit bananas for Jackson, who explained that he will be performing on DWTS while also playing regular baseball games across the country.

Kai Trump Shares Uplifting Update on Mom Vanessa’s Breast Cancer Journey

Kai Trump recently provided an encouraging update on her mother, Vanessa Trump, as she recovers from surgery amid her ongoing breast cancer fight.

At the 2026 ESPY Awards, held at the Lincoln Center in New York City, the 19-year-old exclusively shared with Page Six, “My mom’s doing good.”

“She’s doing better,” Kai continued, her voice tinged with relief.

Kai, radiating optimism, shared a bright smile while discussing her 48-year-old mother’s condition at the high-profile gathering.

Already marking significant milestones, the new high school graduate is gearing up for her next chapter at the University of Miami, where she will join the women’s collegiate golf team. At the event, she turned heads in a stunning gold dress with a high slit.

Kai accessorized her look with matching heels, a gold cuff, a watch, a diamond necklace and drop earrings.

Kai also told Page Six about the tips her grandfather, President Donald J. Trump, gives her on the golf course, “Enjoy every moment of it. It’s going to be rocky, but enjoy every moment of it.”

As for legendary golfer Tiger Woods — who is dating Vanessa — Kai said he advises her, “Be yourself, trust the process.”

Vanessa, meanwhile, announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer via a lengthy Instagram post in May.

“While this isn’t the news anyone expects, I’m working closely with my medical team on a treatment plan,” she wrote at the time. “I am staying focused and hopeful while surrounded by the love and support of my family, my kids, and those closest to me.”

The former model appeared to be keeping her head up, as she was all smiles while shopping with Kai at a mall in West Palm Beach, Florida, a few weeks later.

The following month, Vanessa gave an update on her journey, revealing that she went under the knife and was in recovery.

“Over the past four weeks, I’ve been recovering from surgery, and I’m grateful to be healing and moving forward,” she said.

“Soon, I’ll be starting the second stage of my treatment,” the mom of five added, though she didn’t elaborate on the next steps.

Page Six exclusively reported that Vanessa’s boyfriend, Tiger Woods, whom she started dating in early 2025, was “staying focused” on being her rock.

“He’s proud of how positive she’s stayed and how she’s handling everything so far,” our insider shared. “She’s been so strong and he truly believes she’s going to be OK. He’s just trying to support her however he can right now.”

Vanessa was previously married to Donald Trump Jr., whom she shares Kai as well as kids Donald, 17, Tristan, 14, Spencer, 13, and Chloe, 11.

Heartbreaking Turn: Family’s Ash-Scattering Ceremony on San Francisco Bay Ends in Tragedy

0

U.S. Coast Guard teams were tirelessly scouring the brisk, turbulent waters near San Francisco Bay on Wednesday, in search of three individuals who went missing nearly a day prior. Their boat had overturned during a heartfelt family gathering intended to honor a deceased loved one.

Ralph Boisa recounted how his family, along with close companions, had boarded his younger brother’s vessel on Tuesday afternoon. The occasion was a poignant tribute to his daughter, who passed away at 33 in 2016 and had a deep passion for surfing.

The family tragedy deepened as Ralph’s older brother, Clifford, succumbed shortly after rescuers pulled him from the water. The cabin cruiser had begun to take on water, eventually tipping and capsizing before disappearing beneath the surface. Clifford’s beloved dog also perished in the incident.

The search continued for Ralph’s sister Carol, Clifford’s wife Jackie, and a friend of Ralph’s daughter, contributing to the family’s growing sense of loss.

Boisa reflected on the string of heartbreaks that his family has endured over the years. He shared that another daughter was lost to them in 1995. Currently residing in Washington, Boisa was unable to join the family gathering.

Search will end at sundown Wednesday

U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jared S. Toczko said rescuers have cumulatively scoured 950 square nautical miles (3,260 square kilometers) and will continue searching until sundown Wednesday before ending rescue efforts.

Toczko would not dismiss the possibility that those missing could still be alive, though he also said some could have been trapped inside the three-deck, 49-foot (15-meter) cabin cruiser.

“We do know individuals were in the main deck and potentially below deck,” he said. Witnesses described seeing people pounding on glass windows, trapped as the boat sank.

Crews have identified the location the boat sank but have yet to determine how deep it sank, Toczko said.

Once the boat is located, officials will send either divers or an underwater drone to determine if it’s feasible to salvage it, said San Francisco Police Commander Brien Hoo. If the boat is under 120 feet (37 meters) of water, it would be difficult for divers to get to it, he said.

Witnesses reported “rough seas,” San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen said, and rescuers said swells reached up to 5 feet (1.5 meters). Marine weather conditions, however, didn’t warrant a small craft advisory from the National Weather Service.

Fire department spokesperson Lt. Mariano Elias said the vessel, named Volare, was registered out of Stockton, California, which sits at the eastern edge of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.

According to the ship-tracking website VesselFinder, the boat departed a San Francisco marina, passed under the Golden Gate Bridge twice and visited Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the bay. It was on its way back to San Francisco when it sank near Alcatraz, the famous maximum-security federal prison which closed more than 60 years ago.

Kirk Miller, an experienced local sailor with a master mariner license, said an uneven distribution of passengers could have caused the Volare to tip.

“As it rocks in the waves, it leans over a little bit,” Miller said. “And as it leans over, the stability would decrease. If you had weight down below it acts as ballast. There was nothing in the conditions that were extreme in any regard. There was no massive gust of wind, no huge wave.”

Like a ‘Titanic’ scene, rescuer says

Two men who jumped into action while fishing for halibut said the boat that sank was more than capable of being out in the bay. Justin Marceline and Michael Montoya said they saw what they thought was smoke and arrived to find the vessel halfway submerged.

Marceline could see people trapped inside the rapidly sinking boat through its windows. He threw lead fishing weights to survivors in the water, hoping they could smash the glass, but they were too weak.

“It was like Titanic in real life,” he said. “There was stuff everywhere. People were banging on the glass.”

Montoya estimated they pulled eight or nine people aboard, including the captain, before first responders arrived.

Initial callers reported what appeared to be smoke coming from the boat, but San Francisco police officers who first reached the vessel said it was steam.

Toczko said there were life jackets onboard the boat and that some people were rescued wearing them.

Sudden immersion in water under 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) can lead to cold water shock, a condition where people lose dexterity in minutes. That can be dangerous or deadly when trying to escape a sinking watercraft.

The owners of the boat are John Boisa and Miriam Boisa of Stockton, Coast Guard records show. They did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

“All of us are grieving during this time,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ralph Boisa said John is a “very capable and experienced boatsman” who served in the U.S. Navy. He frequently took family members out on the boat to the San Francisco Bay, Boisa said.

His older brother who died, Clifford Boisa, lived on a small prune orchard in Sutter County in the Sacramento Valley and was a volunteer sheriff’s deputy for more than a decade. Ralph Boisa had planned to visit him for his 80th birthday party next month.

“He was a happy guy, jovial,” Boisa said. “We’re pretty broken up here.”

Florida Principals Charged with DUIs in Separate Traffic Stops

0

An Independence Day celebration took a surprising turn for two school principals in Florida, as their evening concluded unexpectedly in police custody. The dramatic arrests, captured on bodycam footage, unfolded as both women faced DUI charges stemming from separate incidents involving the same vehicle.

The released footage depicts the arrests of Jennifer Jimenez, aged 41, and Christina Alcalde, aged 45, during distinct traffic stops in a shared white Jeep SUV—each instance leading to their individual apprehensions.

Captured by officers from the Clermont, Florida Police Department, the bodycam video reveals the moments authorities halted the duo’s night out, marking an unexpected twist to their holiday.

An officer, upon approaching Jimenez, is heard questioning, “Ms. Jennifer, have you been drinking today? I can detect the smell of alcohol.”

Jimenez candidly responded, “Yes, I have.”

According to a Clermont Police Department probable-cause affidavit obtained by Fox News affiliate WOFL-TV, Jimenez was behind the wheel with Alcalde in the passenger seat when an officer pulled them over around 2 a.m. on July 5 after seeing the Jeep drift in and out of its lane.

The vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes multiple times and drove over a curb before the stop, authorities said. The officer reported smelling alcohol and said Jimenez “would blink really slow and had very slow and delayed reactions.”

Jimenez was arrested on charges of DUI and refusal to submit to DUI testing.

Alcalde, who police said also appeared impaired during the first stop, was sent home in a rideshare while the Jeep was moved to a nearby parking lot instead of being towed.

But around 5 a.m., less than three hours later, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was notified that Alcalde may have been behind the wheel again.

According to the arrest report, the vehicle drifted in its lane and braked repeatedly before an intersection.

Bodycam video shows Alcalde telling the officer she was “way better” and was worried about Jimenez, who had been arrested earlier.

“I’m not meaning to do anything wrong. I’m way better,” Alcalde told the deputy.

“Well, look. I just talked to you,” he replied. “You were really drunk when I talked to you.”

“I know. I know. But I’m not now,” she said.

“It’s a couple hours later,” the deputy said.

“I understand. I’m really not,” Alcalde said. “I promise you I’m not.”

Alcalde was also arrested on DUI-related charges after field sobriety exercises, police said.

Both principals were booked into the Lake County Jail on DUI and refusal-to-submit charges, with bonds set at $2,000 each.

Alcalde reportedly identified her place of work as Pinecrest Lakes Academy, where she is listed as its principal, WESH 2 reports. Jimenez is principal at Pinecrest Academy Tavares, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
