EIU Football Heroes Inspire Heartwarming Adoption Stories After Kitten Rescue

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A team of five football players from Eastern Illinois University is taking the lead in promoting the adoption of shelter cats. They recently set an example by adopting two kittens from the Coles County Animal Shelter.

“We decided that if we’re going to get a pet, rescue should be the way to go,” said Whitten Weems, a tight end on the team.

Weems recounted their experience, saying the moment they arrived at the shelter, they felt an instant bond as if the animals chose them.

“We brought our roommate along,” Weems explained. “He was seated when Bonnie, one of the kittens, leapt into his lap and stayed there comfortably for the duration of our visit.”

They adopted a six-week-old kitten, but his roommate and defensive end Joel Jameson said one cat just wasn’t enough.

“So we ended up getting Megatron,” said Jameson. “So pretty self explanatory that it’s just a bunch of guys living in this house, because it’s a pretty unconventional naming system.”

Megatron is a three-month-old kitten, named after both the Transformers’ antagonist and NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson. As far as personalities go, he’s on the rambunctious side.

“He’s a dude, he likes to run around, jump around,” said Weems.

Bonnie’s a lot calmer, but just as curious.

“Cute ‘lil thing, all of like one pound,” said Jameson.

Since adopting the two of them Wednesday, the entire team has grown to love the two cats.

“You see a 325 pound o-lineman with these little kittens on him, and he just turns into a little boy,” said Jameson.

Now, some players are following suit.

“Some of our teammates went down, I think, two days ago and got themselves a kitten,” Jameson said. “And more guys are going later to do it. So yeah, it’s kind of everybody’ jumping on board.”

Jameson is now encouraging others to find their own feline dynamic duo like Bonnie and….Megatron.

Weems and Jameson both said they enjoyed their experience at the Coles County Animal Shelter, adding cat adoption fees are only $25 through the month of July.

Dancing With The Stars: Briar Nolet’s Inspiring Comeback After Samba Slip

Dancing With The Stars: The Next Pro showcases 12 of the globe’s top dancers competing for a coveted spot in the ballroom for Dancing With The Stars Season 35. Each participant brings unique talent to the stage, but ultimately, only one can claim victory. The show began with an unexpected double elimination featuring Jake Monreal and Briar Nolet. Monreal, recognized from Dancing With The Stars: Junior and So You Think You Can Dance, exited the competition due to insufficient musicality in his jive routine, despite his vibrant presence. Meanwhile, Nolet—known for touring with Jennifer Lopez after her World of Dance appearance—experienced a stumble during her samba. Despite this mishap, judges Shirley Ballas, Mark Ballas, and guest Derek Hough commended her resilience while advising her to focus on refining her skills.

“Naturally, both Jake and I hoped to make it to the finals,” Nolet stated, quickly adding that “everything happens for a reason.” For Monreal, just being selected for DWTS: The Next Pro was a significant triumph. “It meant someone believed in our potential to join the DWTS family eventually,” he remarked. Both Nolet and Monreal found deep value in their experience. Even though their performances received varied responses from the judges, Nolet considered receiving feedback to be a victory itself. Monreal concurred, expressing that, “When experts of such caliber offer advice, it’s wise to take it seriously.”

Nolet and Monreal joined Decider on a Zoom call to reflect on their competition experience, celebrate their fellow dancers, and share how they have become like “family” to one another.

DECIDER: Briar and Jake, it’s unfortunate your paths on DWTS: The Next Pro ended so soon. With some reflection, how do you view the experience now?

BRIAR NOLET: Of course, Jake and I would have loved to stay until the very end, but I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. I walked away with lasting friendships. Our fellow competitors truly deserve all the good things coming to them. Receiving critiques from the judges was also a huge advantage for growth. It’s disappointing to leave early, but I am truly thankful for the opportunity.

JAKE MONREAL: We already won by getting the opportunity to go on The Next Pro because that meant that someone thought we may have what it takes someday to be a part of the DWTS family. I’m eternally grateful. This experience really meant a lot to me. It’s something special. I gave each stage of the competition—including the training beforehand—everything that I could have. I’m proud of what I left out there.

DWTS: The Next Pro, AJ Pritchard, Derek Hough and Jake Monreal

Disney/Vince Valitutti

Jake, for the first challenge, you were paired with AJ Pritchard for the jive. I know he was skeptical of you at first because of your age. What was it like working with him?

JM: He was the utmost professional. I knew him from Strictly Come Dancing so I knew that he would be one of the toughest competitors in the house. When we got paired up together, I was like, “all right, good, I’m excited for this.” I wanted to show that I could compete with somebody at his level. I know the age thing was something that was brought up a little bit. It was funny watching him around the house with his night mask and his pajamas. It was very, uh, 30+ coded [laughs], but I shouldn’t say that.

Briar, you were paired with Stephani Sosa for the samba. What was that experience like?

BN: Stephani’s such a doll. She has a nice background of ballroom, Latin and commercial experience. It was great to be able to learn from her and to work with her. Because she had that commercial background, she’d understand certain terminology I’d use. She helped me drill the moves over and over again. I worked hard to remember the choreography and tried to focus on the technique that I’d been learning for the last year and a half.

The samba is a very difficult dance. But once I sat down with Stephani and we started to talk, she managed to calm me down. It was good for us both to focus on what was important, which was fundamentals and technique. Stephani and I were able to help each other and get to the level we needed to be at. We kept each other grounded.

You both had the opportunity to be coached by Derek Hough. What makes him such a great mentor?

JM: He has this energy about him whenever he walks into the room. It’s pretty incredible. He makes you want to dance. He makes you feel better about being there. He sets the tone and sets the standard, which is what all the best teachers I’ve worked with do.

BN: He genuinely wanted the best for each and every one of us, no matter if he already had personal relationships or not. He just wanted everyone to feel comfortable. Derek’s a bit of a goofball. He is the best of the best, but he is very humble and down to earth. He just wanted it to be fair competition for everyone, which is all you can ask for in a mentor that’s working with every competitor.

DWTS: The Next Pro, Stephani Sosa and Briar Nolet

Disney/Vince Valitutti

Briar, unfortunately, you suffered a slip during your samba. Can you walk me through what was going through your mind at that moment?

BN: Going into that moment, I was obviously very high on adrenaline and energy. After that slip happened, I just felt very determined to keep going. I’m a sweet girl, but when I perform, I can get very competitive with myself. Once I came out of that back handspring, I was like, “oh, heck no, I’m not going down.” Even though I was frustrated with myself, I wasn’t gonna let the slip deter me. I still had the rest of the solo and the side by side with Stephani. I just had to lock in and keep going.

I’ve said it a million times, but everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t change the way that I went about preparing, before or during the competition. I can sleep at night knowing that there was nothing more I could have done. After I slipped, I pushed myself to finish out strong and do the best I could.

I think you handled yourself with incredible grace.

BN: Thank you.

Jake, you felt pretty good about your jive, but both Derek and Mark Ballas had notes about your energy and musicality. Did you think those were fair comments?

JM: I respect the both of them so much as performers, choreographers and teachers. I’m taking to heart any comments they give me. I’m using that critique to better myself. If people with that amount of expertise are telling you something, you should probably listen.

Briar, Shirley Ballas praised your presence, but both she and Derek urged you to work on your technique. How did you feel about feedback you’d receive?

BN: There’s no such thing as perfect. I can be proud of what I did, but also accept criticism with an open mind. There’s always room to improve. Especially being newer to ballroom, it was an honor to perform in front of those three judges and get notes from them. As soon as I got back home, I had a meeting with my coaches and figured out the best way to go forward if my goal is still to be a pro on Dancing With The Stars. I took the judges’ comments and applied them to my training.

Both of you did not want to be the first to go home. You didn’t want to go home at all! You both took being eliminated with such grace. Were Robert Irwin, the judges and your fellow contestants there for you?

JM: The Next Pro environment is such a pressure cooker that we all formed a deep bond with each other almost immediately. On top of the competition, we were also living together! Right after I got eliminated, I felt the love and support from everyone. Robert said some very nice things to me afterwards. Obviously, being eliminated was not what I was hoping for. I was hoping to win and be the next pro. Like Briar said, everything happens for a reason. It wasn’t my time just quite yet. And it’ll be my time at some other point.

BN: Timing is everything. If anything, this experience will make us even more prepared for when the opportunity to be a DWTS pro hopefully presents itself again. Plus, there were so many wins. Jake and I are now a part of this wonderful family with the other dancers. We bonded even more after we were eliminated on the same night. He’s like a younger brother to me now. We still talk all the time.

JM: Briar was talking about this a little earlier, but getting eliminated alone must have really sucked. I was really lucky to have Briar. I wouldn’t want to get eliminated with anybody but Briar, if that makes any sense [laughs]. We were really there for each other. It’s crazy how these bonds form.

BN: Totally. And as much as it sucks going home, there were no hard feelings. We are rooting for each dancer to do well and succeed. It’s exciting to see where we all go from here.

New episodes of Dancing With The Stars: The Next Pro air Mondays at 8PM ET on ABC.

Forensic Expert Highlights Key Mistake in Husband’s 911 Call After NJ Mother’s Tragic Slaying

0

A haunting 911 call from Conor Hanlon, the husband of tragically murdered New Jersey therapist Brooke Hanlon, has captured widespread attention as online detectives eagerly dissect it for potential leads.

The gripping audio from the call reveals the harrowing moment Conor discovered his wife covered in blood, offering a troubling glimpse into the horrific scene he encountered.

On June 6, 35-year-old Brooke Hanlon was discovered fatally stabbed in her home in Chester, New Jersey. As the investigation progresses, no charges have been filed, and Conor Hanlon remains unaccused of any wrongdoing.

Attempts to contact Conor Hanlon by the media for comment have gone unanswered, as calls have not yet been returned.

Following the call’s release, theories circulated online about a possible suspect. One of the nation’s top forensic linguists is warning those following the case not to jump to conclusions.

“You can’t tell from a 911 call,” Dr. Robert Leonard, a forensic linguist and Hofstra University professor, said to News Media.

“People very often try to,” he goes on to say.

Dr. Leonard’s blunt breakdown comes amid social media speculation.

Internet sleuths are dissecting Hanlon’s frantic tone of voice and his word choice, like referring to one of Brooke’s wounds as a “laceration” in the nearly seven-minute call.

That’s exactly the kind of analysis that has led to devastating mistakes, Dr. Leonard said.

He pointed to multiple murder investigations where innocent people were publicly vilified because of how they sounded while calling 911.

One case he references is that of the father of Isabel Celis, Sergio Celis. He reported his six-year-old daughter missing from their Tucson, Arizona home in 2012.

Investigators discovered her remains five years later; leading up to this discovery, Mr. Celis was branded a killer, Dr. Leonard says.

“For six years all of the supposed amateur experts said he did it,” Leonard said.

Ultimately, Christopher Clements , a convicted sex offender, was also convicted of young Isabel’s murder and kidnapping.

In another notorious case, then-teenager Marty Tankleff, of Long Island, New York spent 17 years in prison, wrongfully convicted.

Prosecutors zeroed in on his alleged calm demeanor following the killings of his parents; that conviction was eventually overturned.

“Everybody is so different,” Leonard said. “There are no reliable markers.”

He goes on to say, “We should not rush to judgment.”

As for the call itself, he said, “You don’t do a murder investigation with one bit of data,” he said.

The investigation into Brooke Hanlon’s killing is ongoing, The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation.

There is still a $1,000 reward for anyone who can provide information in the case.

Unlock a Birthday Surprise: Taylor Swift Invites Fans to Experience the Extended Eras Tour Film

Amidst recent backlash from fans over steep rental prices, Taylor Swift is calling on her devoted fans, affectionately known as Swifties, to celebrate her upcoming 34th birthday by renting the extended version of her popular concert film, The Eras Tour.

In a heartfelt post to her 94.9 million followers on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, the pop icon spiced up the announcement with an enticing trailer and a slew of emojis to hint at a celebration ahead.

Drawing inspiration from her music, Swift playfully penned a note filled with lyrical references: “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu [hands in the shape of heart emoji]

‘Celebrate 34 with me by watching The Eras Tour (Extended Version) including “Long Live” [dragon emoji] “The Archer” [bow and arrow emoji] and “Wildest Dreams” [blue heart emoji] at home!” she encouraged.

The celebratory offering does come at a price, however, as the film’s rental is set for a limited two-day availability, priced at £15.99 in the UK and $19.89 in the US and Canada.

Swift added: ‘PS troll me all you want about my excessive and literal millennial emoji use but A) no one’s prouder to be a millennial and B) it’s my bday and today I am exempt! [birthday cake emoji]’

The video clip included in the post saw the A-lister performing Long Live from her 2010 album Speak Now.

She looked absolutely stunning as she sported a lilac dress featuring a massive tulle skirt.

This came after fans have been left fuming after the extended version of her Eras Tour film was released on Wednesday, but can only be rented for just 48 hours for an extortionate fee.

The singer celebrated her 34th birthday on Wednesday and to mark the occasion, Prime Video released Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Extended Version) in the UK, the US and Canada.

A homage to her 10 studio albums to date, The Eras Tour has been described by the singer-songwriter as a journey through all of her musical ‘eras’.

The new version of the concert film includes three bonus songs not seen in theatres— Wildest Dreams, The Archer and Long Live.

She made several references to her music as she wrote: 'I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu [hands in the shape of heart emoji]'

Taylor’s fans have criticised the songwriter for the ‘mental’ price and for only letting people rent the film instead of allowing them to buy it to keep or stream as part of their subscription.

Many lamented that they couldn’t ‘justify’ the fee or afford it, with one saying it would force them to ‘choose between eating for two days and watching a movie’.

Angry fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to slam the decision and complain that they had already spent huge amounts of money on her ‘crazy prices’ to support her.

One person wrote: ‘happy birthday taylor swift or whatever but girl im not giving u $20 for 48 hours of the movie im sorry GIVE US THE OPTION TO BUY’.

Another echoed: ‘I’m sorry but almost $20 to RENT the film is way too much. I would be wanting to buy it for that price. @taylorswift13 you can’t keep raising the prices so it’s nice numbers for you because it’s not worth it for some of us’.

A third added: ‘I throw money at Taylor Swift stuff so often but even I cannot justify $19.89 to rent the Eras Tour movie lol if it was to buy, I would already own it.’

While someone else tweeted: ‘As much as I love Taylor Swift making a movie £15.99 just to rent it is f***ing mental. We are in a cost of living crisis babe.’

A fifth wrote: ‘I love Taylor Swift but $19.89 to rent a movie at home is insane. She could’ve made it $13 if she wanted to be cute with the price. Time to p*rate it.’

However, the movie is only available to rent and just for 48 hours, with it costing £15.99 in the UK and $19.89 in America and Canada

And a sixth agreed, saying: ‘Bro I like Taylor swift but you could never catch me spending 20 f***ing dollars to RENT A GODDAMN MOVIE JESUS CHRIST.’

Another disappointed fan said: ‘I’ve paid over £400 to go and see Taylor Swift and stop over night, a further £40 cinema ticket and merch. I love Her and Her music but when will the crazy prices stop? £16 to rent a movie once is ridiculous, that’s making me choose between eating for 2 days and watching a movie.’

While an eighth fumed: ‘taylor swift has lost her mind if she thinks i’m going to pay $20 to rent a movie for 48 hours like actually what planet do you live on’.

A ninth bemoaned: ‘I wish that I could rent it for Taylor Swift’s birthday today, but I can’t do that due to budget restraints’.

And another said: ‘£16 to RENTTTTTT that taylor swift movie is insaneeeeeee’ while one former fan declared: ‘oh $19.89 to RENT and not own… i am DONE with taylor swift’.

It comes after it was estimated that the Eras Tour movie has grossed $250 million worldwide while the tour itself pushed Taylor’s own net worth to $1.1billion in October, according to Forbes.

The film was history making – it generated $26 million in pre-sale tickets alone and broke the single-day ticket sales records in a mere three hours.

The movie has even been nominated for a Golden Globe in a brand new category – the award for Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement.

It will face competition from a slew of other impressive films: Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros.

Shania Twain humorously addresses her absence at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding for the bride’s former partner

0

See the impact of Harry Styles on her plans.

Shania Twain cited her commitment to Harry Styles’ “Together, Together” tour as the reason she missed attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding.

The singer, famous for hits like “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” revealed during an interview with CTV’s etalk that she had received an invite to Swift’s wedding but was unable to go due to prior obligations with Styles’ concerts.

With a hint of amusement, Twain noted the irony of the situation, given Swift’s brief relationship with Styles, which lasted from 2012 to 2013.

Despite her prior commitments, Twain emphasized she “would have done anything to be at Taylor’s wedding” to Kelce, expressing her regret over missing the celebration.

“It would have been really lovely for me to be there, but I was with Harry,” she said.

Twain, notably, was the opening act of the former One Direction member’s 12-show residency at London’s Wembley Stadium, which concluded on the Fourth of July.

Swift and Kelce’s wedding took place in New York City on July 3 — and Styles performed “Two Ghosts,” a breakup song inspired by their short-lived romance, hours later.

The “X Factor” alum’s fiancée, Zoë Kravitz, is close friends with Swift, 36, and attended the Madison Square Garden nuptials without Styles.

Kravitz, who got engaged to Styles in April, was photographed heading to the ceremony solo in a beaded mesh dress and strappy heels.

The 37-year-old actress was one of more than 1,000 guests at the star-studded event earlier this month.

Twain, meanwhile, was not the only celeb to confess to skipping out on the A-list affair.

Ryan Seacrest revealed on his eponymous radio show last week that after he “RSVP’d to go … Disney hired [him] to do the Fourth of July 250 special on the 3rd and the 4th.”

The “American Idol” host, 51, was “torn” but had “no choice” but to cancel since “it’s part of [his] job at Disney to do these things.”

As for James Taylor, he missed Swift and Kelce, 36, saying “I do” to perform at Tanglewood Music Festival, as he has done for the past 52 years of the Independence Day concert.

“You know, [my wife Kim] and I were invited to a wedding at Madison Square Garden tonight,” the performer, 78, told audience members.

Efficient Tips for Cleaning Bathroom Exhaust Fans to Prevent Mold Growth

0

Moisture trapped in your bathroom can become a breeding ground for mold, cause paint to peel, and lead to hidden structural damage within walls.

CHICAGO (WLS) — There are certain areas in our homes that often get neglected, with the bathroom exhaust fan likely topping that list of forgotten spots.

A fan that is noisy, dusty, or ineffective might not be functioning as intended.

Casey Finn from DIY Playbook joined forces with Tanja Babich to address one of the most commonly ignored cleaning tasks.

The bathroom exhaust fan is crucial because it helps remove moisture from the air produced during showers.

If it’s clogged with dust, it can’t do that effectively-which can lead to mold, mildew, and even peeling paint over time.

How to tell if your fan needs cleaning

The toilet paper test
-Turn on your fan and hold up a single piece of toilet paper.
-If it sticks to the fan it’s working properly
-If it falls it’s time to clean

Another sign:
If your fan is getting loud or noisy, that’s often a sign dust buildup is affecting how it works-and it likely needs to be cleaned.

Supplies

-Vacuum with a brush attachment
-Microfiber cloth
-Mild soap and water
-Step stool
-Old toothbrush or small scrub brush

Step-by-step: how to clean your bathroom exhaust fan

Step 1. Turn off the fan
Always make sure the power is off before you start.
Step 2. Remove the cover
Most fan covers simply pull down. Gently squeeze the clips to unhook it.
Step 3. Wash the cover
Clean the grille with warm, soapy water and let it dry completely.
Step 4. Clean inside the fan
Use a vacuum to remove dust from the fan blades and motor housing.
For stuck-on grime, use a brush or an old toothbrush.
Step 5. Reinstall the cover
Clip the cover back into place and restore power.

Why this matters

A dirty exhaust fan can’t remove humidity effectively. That extra moisture can build up in your bathroom and lead to:
-Mold and mildew
-Peeling paint
-Lingering odors

Experts recommend cleaning your bathroom exhaust fan at least once a year-more often if you notice dust buildup or extra noise.
And if you’ve never cleaned yours before, don’t be surprised if it turns into a bit of a “science experiment.”

Florida Rallies with U.S. State Department to Support Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts

In the wake of the recent earthquakes that nearly destroyed her grandmother’s home in Caracas, Alessandra Izaguirre has been driven by a strong desire to assist Venezuela.

“After seeing the impact on my grandmother and so many others, I felt compelled to take action, even from where I am in the U.S.,” expressed the 18-year-old. In recent weeks, she has dedicated her time to preparing meals for volunteers at the Doral, Florida headquarters of the nonprofit organization Global Empowerment Mission (GEM).

Izaguirre is among thousands contributing to an expansive grassroots humanitarian operation coordinated by GEM. This effort is fueled by donations from across the United States and beyond, demonstrating remarkable momentum three weeks following the devastation.

Every day, hundreds of volunteers gather at GEM’s warehouses in Doral, a city where nearly half the population is of Venezuelan heritage. These volunteers diligently sort through donated items, carefully organizing them in response to current needs before shipping them out to Caracas on a daily basis.

Thanks to a system facilitated by the U.S. State Department, GEM provides a reliable channel for the Venezuelan diaspora and other concerned individuals to offer their support. It ensures that aid reaches those in need while addressing widespread fears of theft and corruption by Venezuelan authorities.

“Whatever we can get to the Venezuelan public is what counts,” said Izaguirre.

The effort also underscores the stunning dynamic shift between the U.S. and Venezuela since President Donald Trump ordered then-Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s capture in an early morning raid on Jan 3. With military personnel again on the ground, the U.S. has assumed a response role that would have been unimaginable before January, when Trump said the U.S. would “run” the country and seized control of its oil exports.

“This is a whole different animal,” said GEM founder and president Michael Capponi, who was denied entry to Venezuela while trying to deliver aid during the reign of Maduro, who long rejected humanitarian help, equating it to foreign intervention. “We land a private plane, it gets unloaded by U.S. soldiers, it goes in a truck we pay for and to a warehouse that we completely control. It doesn’t touch the hands of the Venezuelan government.”

GEM quickly activated a supply chain

The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck 39 seconds apart on June 24, killing at least 4,500 people with thousands more still missing. They destroyed and damaged over 850 buildings, leaving 17,000 displaced and ravaging critical infrastructure providing electricity, clean water and sanitation.

GEM’s headquarters became a donation collection point almost immediately. Some donors were initially skeptical that aid could reach those who needed it without being stolen or misused by a notoriously corrupt government, Capponi said. After GEM made its first successful aid distribution, the movement grew bigger than he’d seen in decades of global response.

Companies like Goya, Walmart and Amazon contribute supplies while professional sports teams have donated funds. But much of the aid is still amassed from thousands of individuals’ contributions.

“They’re going to Walmart with their credit card, buying 15 cans of food and bringing it in a shopping bag,” said Capponi. “It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when it’s 2,000 people… it’s an enormous amount of aid.”

Lines to drop off aid at GEM have at times been so long police had to help manage traffic. Supplies arrive from across North America: Two brothers drove a U-Haul of goods from Canada. Another group arrived from Mexico. Trucks have rolled in from Nevada, Texas and California.

As many as 1,000 volunteers across three warehouses sort and pack. They fill pallets with essentials like diapers, and assemble individual care packages with enough sustenance and hygiene items to last two people about five days. They also tuck in notes of encouragement: “Te queremos Venezuela,” one reads. “We love you, Venezuela.”

GEM aims to deliver at least 100,000 care packages monthly for the next three-to-six months, while also addressing upcoming needs, like longer term housing.

Volunteers have taken vacations from work to put in hours at the warehouses, said Billy Richardson, director of U.S. logistics. Others arrive after work. “We almost have to kick them out at the end of the day,” Richardson said.

Mariela Vila showed up because she remembers how affected she was when Hurricane Maria pummeled her homeland of Puerto Rico in 2017. “The Latino community in general gathered together to help Puerto Rico, and that made me feel really well,” said Vila, 25, who has worked full-day shifts at GEM since the effort began. “So I felt the need to help Venezuela.”

U.S. assumes a complicated role

Nearly one million pounds (454,000 kilograms) of supplies have been deployed so far from GEM headquarters to its recently leased Caracas warehouses. GEM collaborates with local nonprofits and trusted community members to organize distributions in the hardest hit areas, often twice daily.

But it is the U.S. State Department that facilitates the shipments with the Venezuelan government, making it possible for GEM to operate independently, even getting help from the U.S. military. On Saturday, U.S. Marines landed an amphibious landing craft on a Venezuelan beach and unloaded GEM packages that were then passed to 2,000 people lined up for aid.

Partnerships with GEM and additional nonprofits allow the U.S. to tap into existing logistics and donation mechanisms, a State Department spokesperson told The Associated Press, adding that the effort with GEM leverages “the Venezuelan American diaspora and private partners who want to donate.”

Several other U.S.-based humanitarian groups told The Associated Press they also have been able to operate without interference from Venezuelan officials. Some depend on collaborations with established local nonprofits.

Despite the U.S. presence, some still question whether the Trump administration is doing enough to help Venezuela, especially since it controls billions of dollars in oil revenue.

“There are a lot of transparency questions that linger on the use of that fund in a moment in which Venezuelans really need that money to be used for the protection of Venezuelans,” said Laura Cristina Dib, Venezuela program director at the human rights organization Washington Office on Latin America.

John M. Barrett, U.S. charge d’affairs for Venezuela, told reporters last week that the interim government has been “fully compliant in terms of our requests to advance this massive humanitarian response” and that revenue from Venezuelan oil production, currently controlled by the US Treasury, is being made available for relief efforts.

Asked for further details, the State Department spokesperson said “State and Treasury are supporting the Venezuelan interim government’s budgetary operations, improving Venezuela’s liquidity and access to capital during the recovery,” adding that the U.S. has contributed over $386 million to earthquake response independent of the oil revenue.

Venezuela’s recovery is only beginning

In the coastal city of Maiquetía last week, Yoniel Reyes sat inside a tent, examining the contents of a GEM package he’d just received during an aid distribution, packed and sealed 1,300 miles away in Doral. There were instant meals, bottles of water, canned food, hydration powder and hygiene kits.

“I never imagined I would be receiving aid from the U.S.,” said Reyes. “We Venezuelans are thankful, very thankful.”

A South Carolina woman allegedly left her 90-year-old husband with dementia home alone while she enjoyed a Saturday night dinner with friends, causing him to fall.

Teresa Marie Mills is facing charges of vulnerable adult abuse and neglect. The North Charleston Police Department has documented these charges, highlighting the grave nature of the accusations against her.

Police were dispatched to a residence on North Kentwood Drive around 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered the elderly victim seated on the porch alone. He appeared confused, was unable to effectively communicate, and bore evident injuries, including bleeding. Paramedics were summoned to provide immediate medical attention to the man.

Officers walked up to the home where they “detected a strong, overwhelming odor” even before they walked inside.

“Officers described the home”s living conditions as deplorable, reporting feces and urine stains throughout the residence and signs of rodent activity, including boxes and other belongings that appeared to have been chewed,” cops wrote.

Mills said her husband had fallen the day before when she left him alone in the home so she could have dinner with pals. But she never called 911 or contacted a doctor after she returned home and saw that he was injured, cops said.

She said a caregiver comes once a week to give her husband a bath.

Police placed the victim into emergency protective custody. Paramedics transported him to a hospital for treatment.

Officers arrested Mills and booked her into the Al Cannon Detention Center. She was not listed as an inmate at the jail as of Monday evening. Her next court date was not immediately listed.

Florida Resident Accused of Murder Allegedly Fleeing Authorities Following Discovery of Body in Shallow Grave

Authorities are on the hunt for a Florida woman, accused of a man’s murder, who is allegedly dodging law enforcement by using several different aliases.

Isabelle Johnson, aged 38, is facing charges linked to the death of 43-year-old Jason Christopher Coulthart, as confirmed by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators discovered Coulthart’s remains in a shallow grave on a property in Freeport, part of Florida’s Panhandle, according to the sheriff’s office. Coulthart was last seen departing from the College Condominiums on May 24.

Following Coulthart’s disappearance, detectives gathered evidence that directed them to the Freeport location, where they unearthed his body on June 25.

“This is not the news we hoped to deliver to our Niceville community,” said Niceville Chief of Police Mark Hayse. “We stand with Jason’s family and will continue working closely with our partners to see this case through.”

Investigators believe Johnson was involved in Coulthart’s death and have issued a warrant for her arrest.

She is believed to be “actively evading law enforcement,” the sheriff’s office said. Authorities have not disclosed her relationship with Coulthart.

Johnson could be using multiple aliases, including Harley, Jessica Elaine Bowman, Jessica Elaine Thrush, Jessica Dowdy, and others, authorities said.

Three other people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Michael Ray White, 74, and Kathleen Morris, 59, of Santa Rosa Beach, were arrested for accessory to a capital felony after the fact and obstruction. Investigators believe White knowingly helped Johnson evade law enforcement between June 25 and June 30.

Morris was arrested after admitting she helped Johnson with transportation and supplies, as well as misleading law enforcement officials over Johnson being at her home, Fox 10 News reported.

“Anyone found to have helped or who is still assisting Isabelle Johnson avoid arrest will be charged accordingly,” said Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “If you give her a place to stay, help her hide, or lie for her, you will face consequences. This is a homicide case. We will not allow anyone to get in the way of this investigation.”

Authorities released surveillance video that captured Johnson inside a business, days after Coulthart’s remains were discovered. She may have changed her appearance since, the sheriff’s office said.
