CNBC Survey Sparks Backlash for Ranking Top 10 ‘Worst Places to Live’ in Republican States

0

On Monday, CNBC found itself at the center of a digital storm after unveiling its annual quality-of-life rankings. This year’s list pinpointed conservative-leaning red states as the ten “worst places to live,” a decision that spurred criticism, particularly considering official U.S. Census data indicates some of these states are topping the charts in population growth.

Immediately, social media echoed with voices accusing the media outlet of harboring an overt liberal bias, criticizing the ranking criteria as being potentially skewed.

Enumerating from the tenth spot to the top of this list, CNBC identified Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Missouri, Utah, Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana, Texas, and finally, Tennessee as the states lagging behind in quality of life.

It’s notable that this list comprises entirely Republican-governed states, all of which supported President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

CNBC emphasized a growing focus on quality of life, labeled as one of the ten pivotal categories within their annual study of America’s Top States for Business, according to the report’s details.

“It is our annual ranking of every state’s business climate, now in its 20th year. Under this year’s methodology, the category makes up 11.6% of a state’s overall score, up from about ten percent last year. To score the states for quality of life, we use hard data on factors like crime rates, air quality and healthcare. We also consider the cost and availability of childcare, inclusiveness of state laws, and reproductive rights.”

The list is a subset of CNBC’s annual “America’s Top States for Business” study.

To determine its “Life, Health and Inclusion” category, the outlet utilizes criteria such as crime rates, air quality, healthcare, and childcare availability.

The metric also factors heavily in ideological policies, explicitly penalizing states for lack of protections against discrimination and restrictive abortion laws.

“Some states offer exemplary quality of life. But these ten states do not make the grade,” the CNBC report stated.

“CNBC just dropped their 2026 ‘10 Worst States to Live In’ list … and it’s pure comedy,” conservative commentator Reverend Jordan Wells wrote on X.

“Shocking. All deep red, conservative states. But somehow California and New York — with the highest taxes in the country, insane cost of living, and endless progressive policies — didn’t crack the top 10?”

“This is correct. Please believe this. Tennessee is HORRIBLE. You definitely shouldn’t move here…,” conservative Newsmax contributor Chrissy Clark wrote with sarcasm.

The corporate media outlet took direct shots at local conservative legislation across the board.

Tennessee was dinged for the state’s “bathroom law” — which requires transgender individuals to use facilities corresponding with their biological sex at birth — as well as a law barring localities from passing their own local antidiscrimination ordinances.

The outlet also took aim at a joint resolution signed by Gov. Bill Lee this past April designating June as “Nuclear Family Month,” while also noting it had low rankings for crime and drug deaths.

Utah, ranked sixth-worst, was hit for its $7.25 minimum wage, low availability of childcare providers and air quality.

Georgia, the fifth-worst in the survey, was explicitly called out for offering “few protections for LGBTQ+ people, making it one of America’s least inclusive states.”

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom immediately seized on the study, taking to X to point out that every single state on the list leaned red.

“Notice something in common?” Newsom posted.

“All led by Republicans — many suffering from California Derangement Syndrome.”

However, conservatives and independent commentators noted that everyday Americans are “voting with their feet” against progressive governance.

“If you hate not paying income taxes, law and order, parental rights, smaller government, school choice, the Second Amendment, and criminal illegal aliens being arrested … Here’s another garbage list from the mainstream media!” Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas, posted.

“Actually I noticed something else: The list is a bulls–t list that has nothing to do with quality of life for sane people,” countered conservative activist Robby Starbuck, a Tennessee resident. Starbuck, known for successfully leading major corporate boycotts against over-the-top DEI policies, added, “It’s all predicated on far left BS… Our states all gained population while YOUR state lost a record amount.”

Media personality Patrick Bet-David cited the net migration gains of the states CNBC criticized, noting that Texas added over 67,000 residents and Tennessee added over 42,000.

Georgia and Alabama also saw population influxes.

“’10 worst states’ based on what? CNBC had ‘inclusivity’ as one of its criteria,” Bet-David noted.

“The numbers tell a different story.”

The demographic shift highlights a broader post-pandemic exodus from historically blue strongholds.

While regions across the South and Sun Belt experience economic and population booms, major progressive cities like Boston, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles continue to bleed residents due to high taxes, rising crime, and astronomical costs of living.

U.S. Census Bureau data reveals that Los Angeles County alone has watched its population shrink from roughly 10 million in 2020 down to about 9.7 million today, losing over 56,000 residents in just a single one-year stretch.

Similarly, a recent study by the Citizens Budget Commission confirmed that New York City continues to suffer net negative migration, losing far more domestic residents than it gains.

Activist Judges Face Scrutiny Over Leniency in Shocking Immigration Case

A Cuban man, formerly convicted of hijacking an aircraft to the United States back in 2003, is now free after a federal judge mandated his release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. This individual had subjected a flight crew to a harrowing ordeal during an incident that led to the plane landing in Florida.

Miakel Guerra Morales, who spent approximately two decades in a federal prison for orchestrating the hijacking, had been detained by immigration authorities since December as they awaited his deportation.

However, on July 8th, U.S. District Judge John E. Steele determined that Morales should no longer be detained, despite the ongoing proceedings to remove him from the country.

A 2009 magistrate judge’s report shed light on the violent actions taken by Morales and his accomplices during the hijacking. Armed with the plane’s emergency axes and several knives, the hijackers effectively took control of the cockpit and intimidated the crew and passengers. On several occasions, knives were held at the throats of crew members and passengers alike.

The report further detailed Morales as one of the key instigators, describing how he, alongside another individual, allegedly forced a steward to the cabin floor. There, they reportedly held a knife to his throat while tying his hands behind his back with a cord.

During the chaos, the flight technician grabbed an axe to fight back, but reportedly stopped when he heard shouting from the passenger cabin that the hijackers had taken children hostage.

Gainesville resident charged with making violent threats

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 28-year-old man, Kaleb Alaye Singleton, has been taken into custody following allegations that he threatened to shoot three individuals. This incident reportedly stemmed from an argument involving his girlfriend at Arbor Park, during which she warned the victims that her boyfriend would react violently.

Officers from the Gainesville Police Department arrived on the scene at Arbor Park Apartments, located on 309 SW 16th Avenue, around 6:56 p.m. on June 20. According to reports, Singleton’s girlfriend had engaged in a verbal dispute and allegedly declared, “I’m gonna call my man, and he’s gonna flip out.” Shortly thereafter, Singleton appeared and is accused of brandishing an AR-style pistol. By the time law enforcement arrived, both Singleton and his girlfriend had left the premises.

Testimonies from three victims and four witnesses indicate that Singleton aimed the firearm at the three individuals, causing them immense fear for their safety. Additionally, one witness claimed to have heard Singleton threaten to “shoot up the place” while wielding the weapon.

On June 25, Singleton’s girlfriend was interviewed over the phone by an officer. She reportedly acknowledged the altercation with the victims and witnesses, admitting that she had summoned Singleton to the apartment complex. She confirmed that he arrived shortly after, produced a gun, but did not discharge it.

The officer also interviewed Singleton over the phone, and he reportedly confirmed that his girlfriend had called him and asked him to come to Arbor Park because of the argument. He said he had an AR-style pistol in a backpack and took it out while he was there, but he said he held it down by his side.

The officer determined that Singleton’s threatened use of deadly force was not reasonable because “there were no present circumstances of imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of any forcible felony.”

Singleton has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has one felony conviction (non-violent). Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $450,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

England vs Argentina: Meet the Referee Behind Messi’s Undefeated Streak

0

Concerns about potential World Cup bias in favor of Argentina have intensified following FIFA’s announcement that Lionel Messi’s preferred referee will oversee England’s eagerly-awaited semi-final against the defending champions.

Messi and his team have shown less than stellar performance as they prepare for Wednesday’s thrilling encounter with the Three Lions. Argentina narrowly defeated Egypt and Switzerland, amid controversial circumstances, in the last-16 and quarter-finals, respectively.

The nature of these wins, marked by a disputed disallowed goal against Egypt and the ejection of Swiss striker Breel Embolo, has ignited widespread criticism and speculation that FIFA may be favoring Messi and Argentina in their quest for the title—an allegation that FIFA firmly rejects.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Ismail Elfath will be officiating the match—arguably the biggest stage of his refereeing career—at Atlanta Stadium. England aims to secure their first World Cup final berth since 1966, while Argentina hopes to make consecutive final appearances.

The Moroccan-born American referee, supported by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, will officiate his fourth match of this year’s tournament, and for the first time, either England or Argentina. Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will serve as the fourth official.

Elfath was the fourth official in Qatar when Argentina beat France to win the 2022 World Cup and his encounters with Messi have increased since the forward signed for MLS outfit Inter Miami in July 2023.

A month after signing for Inter Miami, Messi helped his new team win the Leagues Cup final over Nashville SC – an encounter that was refereed by Elfath.

Messi scored the opening goal with an emphatic strike into the top corner from outside the box before Nashville levelled. The match later went to penalties with Miami prevailing 10-9, with Messi scoring their first in the shootout.

The 44-year-old has refereed Lionel Messi four times at club level – all four resulting in wins – heightening fears for England ahead of the semi-final

In fact, since coming to America, Messi has been officiated four times by Elfath – winning on all of those occasions. As well as the aforementioned Leagues Cup final, Messi has scored four times across the other three MLS games.

And England players be warned as Elfath’s MLS record this season indicates he doesn’t mind getting his notebook out. In 10 matches he officiated in, before the season paused for the World Cup, he had dished out 41 yellow cards, sent off three players and awarded three penalties.

That approach has been matched at this World Cup so far where he has issued eight yellow cards and one red card across three matches – Netherlands 2-2 Japan, Spain 1-0 Uruguay and Norway 2-1 Brazil.

The Spain-Uruguay game with controversy too as the 44-year-old was targeted by the Spanish media afterwards for his performance. He was accused of not being firm enough with the Uruguayans – as the match became spiky. Deep into second-half stoppage-time Uruguay midfielder Agustin Canobbio was sent off late on for high challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

However, the biggest gripe from the Spanish media came as a result of Nicolas De La Cruz’s challenge on Nico Williams that left him injured. Williams described it as ‘one of the worst days of my life’ post-match but played the final minutes of their quarter-final win over Portugal.

Elfath’s most recent match too had a controversial moment when he initially dismissed Brazil’s appeals for a penalty after Norway defender Kristoffer Ajer fouled Matheus Cunha. However, VAR intervened and Elfath overturned his decision before Bruno Guimaraes saw his spot-kick saved.

Messi and Argentina have faced scrutiny throughout this World Cup so far with allegations of refereeing bias in their favour. The latest incident came on Saturday when Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji claimed everything was ‘against us’ after their 3-1 quarter-final exit in extra-time.

Switzerland’s players and manager were incensed after Embolo became the first player to be sent off as a result of a new rule for mistaken identity.

With the quarter-final level on 72 minutes, Embolo was shown a second yellow card after a video assistant referee review which led to him being adjudged to have dived – rather than being fouled by Argentina’s Leandro Paredes. A new rule introduced for this World Cup states that if a player is booked or sent off – but the foul was actually committed by the opposition – the decision can be changed.

Reflecting post-match, Akanji fumed: ‘Every little thing was called against us’ and ‘I’ve never experienced such a one-sided game.’ Manager Murat Yakin called the refereeing ‘incomprehensible’.

Last week, FIFA refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina hit out at those questioning the integrity of the World Cup officials, insisting that they cannot be influenced by anyone following Egypt’s complaints after their last-16 defeat by Argentina.

The reigning champions battled back from 2-0 after 78 minutes to win 3-2 in Atlanta, with Egypt manager Hossam Hassan later accusing FIFA of rigging the World Cup in favour of Argentina’s talisman Messi.

Hassan’s protestations were magnified also by footage showing him angrily waiting to confront Argentina inside the tunnel after the full-time whistle too.

Addressing criticisms towards the officiating, Collina rubbished the allegations towards his staff and pinpointed the wider ramifications it has on the accused individuals.

Asked by FIFA.com how he has viewed the World Cup so far, the FIFA Chief Refereeing Officer said: ‘Let’s start by saying that we have now played 50 per cent more matches than at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and there are still eight more huge games to be played.

‘Overall, we are happy. However, with such a high number of matches played in a relatively short period of time, it is normal that some things do not go as expected. When that happens, they are ready to work even harder to ensure they are fully prepared for the next match.

‘Of course, constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport. Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials. When this happens, it may provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is not right.

‘Equally, nobody can claim that FIFA Refereeing can be influenced by anyone, not even by the FIFA President [Gianni Infantino]. He has always shown his full support for FIFA Team One while trusting us to work with complete independence. Match officials make honest decisions and, just like players and coaches, they always try to do their best.’

Collina’s viewpoint differed strongly with Hassan’s who was fuming at the outcome of the match.

After Enzo Fernandez’s stoppage-time winner, chaos ensued with Egypt’s furious staff remonstrating with referee Francois Letexier, leading to goalkeeper coach Saafan El-Sagheer being shown a red card and Hassan being dragged away from a confrontation with the official.

The Pharaohs were furious that the referee – and also VAR – had not awarded Egypt a penalty moments before Argentina’s winner, as Mohamed Salah was brought down inside the box after having his foot clipped by Julian Alvarez.

Earlier in the second half, Egypt themselves had a goal disallowed by VAR due to a foul in the build-up. Throughout the game, a string of decisions went in favour of Argentina, who have now progressed to the quarter-finals as they bid to retain their crown in North America.

After the match, Hassan could not contain his outrage and furiously accused world football’s governing body FIFA of rigging the tournament so that all-time great Messi could remain in the competition for ‘marketing reasons’.

‘We were better, but football is unfair,’ the heartbroken coach said in his post-match interview.

‘It could be a matter of marketing, they could want to make a World Cup with the champion of the last World Cup, they want Messi to exist (in the tournament).

‘I thank my players very much. To all the Egyptians, the Arabs, the Africans, you can work hard, it’s what you have to do, but sometimes there are other factors that make you struggle.

‘I wish we could be happier with the loss, but with a severe loss like today I say to them (my players) be upset. We wish we could be happier. Thank God for everything but football is different from what happens in the stadium when we are playing against the world champions.

‘There is support from all directions for the world champions. Support and marketing.’

He added later: ‘Why isn’t there any fairness in sport? In football? I do not want to try to put it nicely here with beautiful wording. We have been treated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice.’

Hassan went on to claim that the result was influenced by ‘internal’ and ‘external’ factors and that Egypt had objected to the selection of Letexier as referee.

Ziko added fuel to the fire after the game by describing Letexier as an ‘unjust’ referee.

‘Referee, not fair,’ he said in tears during his post-match interview. ‘Unjust, unjust referee. An unjust person. An injustice that is so clear.

‘He’s wasting the effort of an entire nation. Since the beginning of the game, we were leaving the game winning 2-0 against Argentina. But the cup has already been given.’

‘I apologise to (the Egypt fans). We wanted to make them happy today. We didn’t know how to do that. But, by God, it’s not in our hands; it’s in the hands of the referee. The cup has already been decided.

‘Congratulations to Argentina on the World Cup. Congratulations. You don’t need anything else.’

Wimbledon’s Role as a Popular Backdrop for Influencers Sparks Controversy Among Tennis Enthusiasts

0

This year, the iconic Centre Court at Wimbledon became the latest hotspot for influencers, transforming into a backdrop for numerous social media personalities who flocked to the annual tennis event.

Such activity has frustrated die-hard tennis enthusiasts who either paid a premium for their tickets or spent extensive time waiting in line. Meanwhile, these content creators, many of whom entered without charge, frequently obstructed views as they captured their perfect shots.

Social media channels are awash with a variety of behind-the-scenes clips, showing individuals posing extensively. This influx prompted fans to comment, “This has taken over Wimbledon this year far too much.”

“Please stop,” implored another frustrated observer. “It’s tacky.”

The attendance of social media influencers boasting massive followings at SW19 has surged noticeably, as high-end brands like Evian and Swarovski extend complimentary invites to these digital stars.

This year, influencers who have received invitations from brands to the sporting event include Love Island contestants Molly Mae Hague and Maura Higgins, Made in Chelsea personality Ashley James and model Olivia Neill.

And frustrated fans of the annual tournament have expressed their feelings of disdain at the ‘shallow’ stars who merely ‘queued to get their pics then assumed their practised poses’ before ‘pushing off to their drinks’.

While members of the public have struggled to get tickets to SW19, influencers have shared photographs of themselves posing in the stands, sipping Pimm’s and enjoying strawberries and cream.

Sharing a video of one influencer taking photographs on Centre Court ahead of a highly anticipated game, one X user wrote: ‘Poor Wimbledon… it became the background for a photoshoot.’

‘Many of the corporate suite holders invite hordes of people who act like this. Most had no interest in the tennis, just being seen there,’ added another.

‘Surely any freebie tickets should go to our veterans and local heroes who volunteer and do great work for charities,’ suggested one user.

Meanwhile, another unhappy X user even suggested that it was ‘disrespectful to the real fans who queue for hours and pay with their hard earned cash’ for there to be scores of influencers more focused on taking snaps at Wimbledon, instead of watching the sport.

One disgruntled TikTok user pleaded that brands ‘stop gifting event tickets to influencers who aren’t into the sport’

‘The amount of people I’ve seen at Silverstone or Wimbledon who have never expressed an interest before is actually insane and there’s people out there who’s dream it would be to experience these things,’ they added.

Dozens of influencers have been sharing their experiences at the sporting Championships online, including ‘get ready with me’ videos, rankings of ‘courtside chic’ and insights into the luxurious hospitality suites.

And some social media creators have even opted to embrace the suggestion that influencers are perhaps less interested in the tennis – with a social media trend seeing content creators playfully appear not to understand what ’30 love’ means.

Seats at Wimbledon are famously hard to secure in advance – and this year fans have also been turned away from The Queue after more than 10,000 people turned up by 8.30am.

The Queue, known for its strict etiquette and having its own official rulebook, has surged in popularity in recent years – and is considered one of the must-try experiences for tourists visiting London over the summer.

One person posted on social media: ‘I can’t understand why influencers who have nothing to do with sport are being invited to Wimbledon and to F1, for what reason.’

A second added: ‘It’s gotten so absurdly crowded.

‘It’s essentially a fashion show for women who know nothing about tennis and come here for “the vibes” and to take photos of themselves in their outfits.’

A third said: ‘The All England Lawn Club or the sponsors like Evian could reach out to tennis lovers and invite them instead of celebrities and influencers.’

Earlier in the Championships, Wimbledon Park, where the famous queue begins, was visibly heaving at 8.30am by which point 10,000 people had already turned up.

All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton told the Daily Mail the line was ‘effectively full’ and advised people not to travel to the Championships as they would not get in.

‘We were at 10,000 by about 8.30am [on Monday] so we are advising people, if they haven’t already set off to travel, not to travel, because the queue is effectively full,’ she said.

‘I think back to that period post-Covid where we were somewhat nervous that the queue might die, and ironically the queue has become increasingly popular over that period of time.’

Fed-up tennis fans have said the Queue has become so long, that it is no longer worth lining up for tickets.

One person posted on X: ‘8k at 6.30am?! Nah, The Queue is utterly f***** these days.’

Rachael Hann, business unit director for waters at Danone North Europe, which produces Evian, says hospitality plans for its Mountain of Youth pink suite start a year in advance.

A spokesperson for the brand previously told The Daily Mail: ‘Wimbledon is much more than a hospitality moment for Evian.

‘It is one of the clearest expressions of our long-standing connection with tennis and a platform that supports our ‘live young’ ethos at a global level.

‘Hospitality is just one part of that, and during The Championships we welcome a broad range of partners and stakeholders – including charity partners, media and influencers – reflecting the many organisations and individuals who contribute to and support our business, brand and longstanding partnership with Wimbledon.’

Nancy Guthrie Case: YouTubers, Arrests, and Unusual Roadside Events Unveiled

0

A YouTuber with a penchant for true-crime stories has come under fire for allegedly transforming the area near the Nancy Guthrie search site into a personal livestream set. This setup reportedly included traffic cones, a tripod, and what some have described as a “pee tent.”

Documents accessed by News Media reveal misdemeanor cases tied to three men who were either cited or faced charges after streaming activity was noticed by law enforcement close to the Catalina Foothills. This location is pertinent to the investigation into Guthrie’s mysterious disappearance.

According to the FBI, the last known sighting of Nancy Guthrie was at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood on the night of January 31, 2026.

However, the investigation into her whereabouts has not only attracted the attention of authorities but also of online sleuths, livestreamers, and true-crime enthusiasts, many of whom have descended upon the neighborhood to broadcast from the vicinity of the search zone.

YouTube streamers organize to search for Nancy Guthrie

Captured on a live-streaming iPhone were volunteers assembling near Guthrie’s residence in Tucson, Arizona, on February 22, 2026. Their mission was to look for any clues that might aid in locating Nancy Guthrie or identify those who might be involved in her disappearance. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues the search for Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of well-known U.S. journalist and TV host Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her home early on February 1st. Alexander Zabel Jr. — “Criminal Network”

The most detailed allegations appear in the case against Alexander Zabel Jr., also known as CriminalNetwork, who was charged with obstructing a public thoroughfare and public nuisance, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Department citation and misdemeanor probable-cause statement.

Deputies said they responded around 4:30 p.m. on May 26 to a traffic hazard and contacted Zabel, who was allegedly sitting in a lawn chair.

The probable-cause statement says Zabel intentionally placed traffic cones in the road next to his personal belongings, including a tripod he was using to livestream. Deputies wrote that Zabel’s YouTube livestream also showed him on the roadway.

The same probable-cause statement says that on June 6, Zabel set up a “pee tent” on the road “insinuating that he was urinating” and creating an unpleasant environment for surrounding neighbors.

Deputies wrote that, because of the “sensitivity & proximity to the high-profile address,” Zabel created an offensive setting in the middle of the neighborhood and obstructed the free use of property.

Zabel was cited for two misdemeanor counts including obstructing a public thoroughfare and public nuisance, both marked as criminal offenses.

Zabel pleaded not guilty to both counts. James Pollack, community relations coordinator for the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County, said Zabel has a show-cause hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 21.

Troy Lewis Bradshaw — “DAA JUICE”

A second streamer, Troy Lewis Bradshaw, also known as “DAA JUICE”, was cited by PCSD for allegedly obstructing a public thoroughfare on June 4, according to a separate Arizona traffic ticket and complaint.

He was charged with “obstructing a public thoroughfare.” Unlike Zabel, Bradshaw’s court records provided to News Media did not include a narrative explaining exactly what deputies alleged he did to obstruct the roadway.

A June 16 minute entry shows Bradshaw pleaded not guilty to obstructing highway/public thoroughfare, first offense, with a fine or civil sanction listed at $282. Pollack told News Media that Bradshaw had a case management conference on Monday.

Damian Todd Enderle — “857 Tucson”

The third case involved Damian Todd Enderle, also known as “857 Tucson”, who was cited June 8 for public nuisance, according to a PCSD citation.

A June 30 minute entry shows the public nuisance charge was dismissed after the state moved to drop it. Pollack said Enderle does not have any upcoming court hearings scheduled.

NYC Voters Outraged as City Council Approves Controversial 18% Salary Increase

0

It’s an outrageous move on numerous fronts: City Council members are attempting to pass a substantial pay raise for themselves.

Mere days after the approval of a colossal $126 billion city budget, they introduced a proposal to increase their salaries by over 18%, effective retroactively from January 1, accompanied by automatic annual raises of 2% thereafter.

These increases would elevate council members’ salaries to $175,500, placing them in an upper-middle-class bracket, more than doubling the city’s median income of $81,228.

This decision demonstrates utter disregard for city voters, whom the politicians evidently believe will overlook this move, as well as a blatant disregard for the City Charter, which outlines a completely different method for salary increases.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Speaker Julie Menin should be held accountable if they permit this to go forward, instead of standing up to members seeking this financial windfall.

And shame on the supposed good-government groups currying favor by claiming a $27,000 increase will attract superior candidates.

Hah! The council awarded itself fat $30,000 raises in 2016 with no sign of improvement at all; the simple fact is that the job was never meant to be a good career move, but rather a public service that might interrupt a normal career.

Los Angeles and Chicago pay their councilmembers more — and those towns are now worse disasters than Gotham.

The City Charter requires the convening of a pay panel every four years — specifically during the third year of a mayoral administration — to prevent immediate conflicts of interest: By moving now, the council majority would be declaring themselves proud to line their own pockets.

Private-sector workers don’t get automatic cost-of-living adjustments, nor do regular city workers: What entitles the council members to them, other than “we think we can get away with it”?

Mamdani should order his City Charter Commission to fix this loophole by asking city voters to explicitly ban this self-dealing.

And if Menin means to be seen as a real leader, she can’t just announce she won’t take the raise: She needs to refuse to allow a floor vote on this outrage.

If neither of them steps up, they’re declaring that they, too, hold regular New Yorkers in complete contempt.

Brad Pitt’s Kids Zahara and Maddox Announce New Name Changes

0

Two of Brad Pitt’s children have taken steps to formally separate themselves from the association with their well-known father.

According to documents accessed by the Daily Mail, Zahara and Maddox, Pitt’s daughter and son respectively, have issued public notices announcing their plans to remove ‘Pitt’ from their surnames.

These announcements appeared in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, spread across the months of June and July.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Jolie and Pitt seeking their viewpoints on the matter.

One such notice reads: ‘Petitioner Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt filed a petition with this court for a decree changing names as follows: Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt to Zahara Marley Jolie.’

‘Petitioner Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt filed a petition with this court for a decree changing names as follows: Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie,’ the other says.

The notices both invite dissenting parties to appear at a scheduled hearing over the matter; Zahara’s is scheduled for September 28 while Maddox’s is on September 14.

In the state of California, those seeking to legally change their name must publish an Order to Show Cause – a document requesting the name change – for four weeks in a row in a newspaper before their court date.

It comes a month after Zahara filed a petition requesting that her new name be Zahara Marley Jolie.

Maddox also filed to drop the actor’s last name in late May.

Zahara publicly dropped the last name three years ago when she joined a sorority at Spelman College.

‘My name is Zahara Marley Jolie. And [I] landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California,’ she appeared to say while introducing herself to sorority sisters, via People.

She also went by Zahara Marley Jolie during her graduation ceremony, which her father reportedly skipped, according to TMZ.

‘Nothing prevented him from showing up for her. Or ever visiting her. The day was about all she accomplished. Not whether he was willing to attend,’ a source close to Jolie told the publication.

However, multiple sources have exclusively spoken to the Daily Mail in defense of Pitt, insisting that he is not the absent father he has been portrayed as, and he wants a relationship with his six children.

Maddox was also credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt while working as a production assistant on his mother’s biopic Maria.

Jolie and Pitt’s other children, Shiloh and Vivienne, have also stopped using the actor’s last name. It is not known if Pax has stopped using the name as well.

Last year, Shiloh, who was born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie shortly after turning 18.

At the time, in a statement shared with People, Shiloh’s lawyer Peter Levine said she ‘made an independent and significant decision following painful events,’ adding that she was ‘merely following legal process’ when publishing notice of the change.

One month after Shiloh filed to drop her father’s last name, a source told People that Pitt’s relationship with his older children remained strained.

‘He has virtually no contact with the adult kids. His engagement with the younger kids is more limited in recent months because of his filming schedule,’ the insider said.

In May 2024, Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie, not Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, on the playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders.

The family divide was again brought to the forefront when Pitt’s mother, Jane Etta Pitt, died last year at the age of 84.

Sources revealed at the time that she had been cut off from her grandchildren for about nine years, and they did not get a chance to speak before her death.

‘The most gut-wrenching part is that Angelina kept the kids away from his parents, from their own grandparents,’ one insider alleged to the Daily Mail last August.

Pitt’s relationship with son Pax – who previously called his father a ‘world-class a**hole’ and accused him of making his younger siblings ‘tremble in fear’ – doesn’t seem to be any better.

A source previously told the Daily Mail how Pitt felt after the 22-year-old was pictured stumbling out of the Chateau Marmont last year, propped up by several friends.

‘He has zero concern with what Pax does or doesn’t do. [Pax’s] actions reflect who he is,’ the insider said. ‘Brad honestly considers his relationship with Pax unfixable,’ they added.

The source went on to say that the actor doesn’t appear to be planning any outreach to either of his adopted sons: ‘Pax and Maddox have made it abundantly clear how they feel, and Brad has nothing to say about either of them.’

As for his other children, the source said that Pitt ‘holds out hope that the others will one day come around. Time heals wounds.’

A source close to Jolie also hit back at her ex-husband at the time and said: ‘Brad continues to play the victim. His fractured relationship with his children is a direct result of how he has treated them.’

‘He should stop blaming others. If he wants to rebuild a relationship with the kids, he should acknowledge his own actions and make amends.’

After meeting on the set of the 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith, Pitt and Jolie were seen as Hollywood’s ‘It’ couple during their long-term relationship.

They married in August 2014 during a secret ceremony in the South of France and welcomed three children together during their romance: Shiloh in 2006 and twins Vivienne and Knox in 2008.

They also adopted two more, Zahara and Pax, and Pitt legally adopted the son that Angelina had adopted before they got together, Maddox.

But in 2016, it came to an explosive end after the pair got into an alleged physical altercation while on a private flight with their six children and Jolie later filed for divorce.

Jolie later claimed that Pitt ‘choked’ one of the children during the horrifying dispute and ‘struck’ another in the face, leaving her and the youngsters feeling like ‘hostages’ and cowering in fear under a blanket for hours until they landed.

She also alleged that he grabbed her by the head, slammed her against a wall, and violently shook her at one point during the flight – which resulted in her injuring her back and elbow.

Pitt’s representative called Jolie’s account ‘completely untrue’ to CNN at first, but then released an amended statement to the publication that read, ‘Angelina’s story continues to evolve each time she tells it.

‘Brad has accepted responsibility for what he did but will not for things he didn’t do. He has been on the receiving end of every type of personal attack and misrepresentation.

‘Thankfully, the various public authorities she has tried to use against him over the past six years have made their own independent decisions. Brad will continue to respond in court as he has consistently done.’

Since they split, the two stars have been embroiled in one of the most publicized legal battles in Hollywood history over custody of their children, as well as the winery that they once owned together.

In May 2021, after years of duking it out in court, Pitt and Jolie were officially granted joint custody of their six children, but one month later, the judge’s decision was thrown out.

Pitt has since moved on romantically and has been dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon for the last few years.

Former RHOC Star Alexis Bellino Reflects on Defining Friendship with Heather Dubrow and Shares Insightful Response

RHOC's Alexis Bellino Recalls Asking Heather Dubrow If She Was a "Real Friend" or a "TV Friend," and Reveals Heather's Response

Alexis Bellino has opened up about a past phone conversation with Heather Dubrow, during which she questioned whether their relationship was genuine or merely for the cameras. Bellino also recounted Heather’s reaction, as producer Carlos King suggested Heather is afraid to cross Tamra Judge.

During the kickoff of season 20 of Real Housewives of Orange County, Jennifer Pedranti claimed that Heather spoke unfavorably about Tamra to other cast members following their reunion dinner. Over the years, this has fueled speculation among fans who believe Heather has been reluctant to confront Tamra directly about her controversial behavior.

On the podcast Reality with The King, Alexis Bellino responded to host Carlos King’s assertion that Heather Dubrow and Tamra Judge are not actually friends.

“This is how Heather views Tamra: I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer,” said Carlos, a former Bravo producer. “She does not want the wrath of Tamra. And in Heather Dubrow’s mind, she feels like, ‘I would rather have Tamra as a fair-weather friend than an enemy,’ because we all know what happens when Tamra has an enemy.”

“Heather is so fake on camera where she wants to appear [like], ‘Oh no, Tamra, I do call you out,’” Carlos continued. “Do you? Because all these ladies said, and they’re not lying, that you spent that dinner talking the most s**t about Tamra, only to call her the next day, saying, ‘Hey, how are you?’”

Alexis then recalled her own phone call with Heather when they were both still filming.

“For the whole time I was on the phone [with Heather], when we were filming back in season 18, and even years before, I would say, ‘Are you my TV friend? Are you my real friend? I need to know,’” said Alexis. “I think, in Heather’s mind … she means [work friend] when she [calls Tamra a] ‘historical friend.’”

“So I would always say that. I was like, ‘I just want to know. I want to know how much can I trust you with information? Are you my true friend?’” she went on. “Heather probably said, when I asked it, ‘Well, Alexis, come on. Look at what we’ve gone through, what we’ve talked about.’”

According to Alexis, Tamra claimed she herself is Alexis’ “true friend.”

Deadly Bangkok Pub Fire Sparks Urgent Safety Overhaul as Casualties Climb to 30

0

In a tragic update on Tuesday, authorities reported that the death toll from a catastrophic fire at a live music pub in Thailand’s bustling capital has sadly risen to 30. The tragic incident has prompted Bangkok’s governor to pledge more rigorous safety inspections, while police delve into potential negligence and breaches of safety protocols.

This harrowing blaze, marking one of Thailand’s deadliest in recent history, swept through the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in the city’s northern Chatuchak district just before midnight on Sunday. Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos as an explosion and a horizontal blaze of fire and smoke rapidly engulfed the single-story establishment.

By Tuesday, 24 individuals remained in critical condition, though the number of those who had been treated and discharged continued to grow. Unfortunately, three people who were hospitalized succumbed to their injuries, bringing the grim tally higher still.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed on Tuesday morning that no Australians appeared to have been impacted by this devastating event.

“We stand ready to provide consular assistance if required,” stated the spokesperson, extending support should any related needs arise.

The pub, located at a busy intersection next to train stations and two shopping malls, is one of a cluster of similar bars often crowded on weekend nights, serving food, alcohol and offering live music and televised football.

Authorities say an electrical short circuit in a ceiling air conditioner could have triggered the fire in the pub, which underwent a safety inspection in April. Police are investigating whether exits were obstructed and the use of flammable materials for stage decorations and soundproofing.

“We’ve set up a committee to investigate the truth, what should be improved and what rules should be changed” Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt told a press conference on Tuesday.

“We will do more random checks.”

Police said 34 people had been interviewed so far and charges would be considered after facts and evidence had been gathered. The owner is among those being treated in an intensive care unit.

‘We apologise deeply’

At a Bangkok morgue on Tuesday, rescue workers were seen moving a coffin of one of the victims, surrounded by television cameras and a throng of reporters as emotional family members and friends arrived to collect the body.

Outside Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, some of the relatives were mourning those killed as forensics personnel gathered evidence from the scene.

The pub on its Facebook page apologised over the fire and said it was cooperating fully with the investigation.

“We apologise deeply over the very sad events that took place and express our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and send our support to those injured,” it said in a post that had hundreds of comments, many expressing anger and questioning its safety measures.

The pub did not answer calls or respond immediately to a request for comment on the investigation’s preliminary findings.

Thailand has experienced several major fires at entertainment venues that are subject to fire safety inspections, though protocols are not always strictly adhered to.

A nightclub fire in Chonburi killed at least 13 people in 2022, and 65 people died, and about 200 were injured in a New Year’s Eve blaze at a packed Bangkok club in 2009, where an investigation uncovered corruption and safety violations.

In Bangkok’s famous Khaosan Road backpacker district packed with pubs and nightclubs and about 10km from the site of the fire, visitors expressed sadness over the incident but said they had no concerns about safety.

“It doesn’t worry us. All the places that we’ve been have been very safe,” said Connor McLernon, 30, a tourist from Boston in the United States.
