Prosecutors to Present Edited Roommate Testimony in Tyler Robinson Preliminary Hearing on Charlie Kirk Shooting

PROVO, Utah — In a highly anticipated court session this Thursday, Utah prosecutors aim to showcase audio recordings of law enforcement officials questioning the roommate of the suspect in the death of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

The defense team has strongly opposed the public dissemination of statements made by Tyler Robinson’s roommate and romantic partner, Lance Twiggs. They argue that presenting these statements as admissions could prejudice public opinion, thereby infringing upon Robinson’s right to an impartial trial if aired by the media.

Facing an aggravated murder charge, Robinson has yet to submit a plea. He surrendered to authorities a day following the shooting that claimed Kirk’s life. Kirk, a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, was instrumental in energizing young voters for Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Prosecutors claim that Robinson left a note for Twiggs allegedly confessing, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” Moreover, it’s alleged Robinson texted Twiggs, indicating Kirk was targeted out of a personal vendetta against his “hatred.”

Twiggs provided statements to law enforcement on September 12, just two days after Kirk was killed during an event at Utah Valley University, and again on April 20. With immunity granted for these interviews, Twiggs’ comments are protected from being used against him in any legal proceedings.

State District Judge Tony Graf will decide at the conclusion of this week’s preliminary hearing if prosecutors have enough evidence to bring Robinson to trial.

Robinson’s attorneys have not commented on his guilt or innocence but have sought to get the death penalty taken off the table, so far unsuccessfully.

Attorneys for Kirk’s family and the media had urged the judge to make Twiggs’ statements and other evidence public.

“To not be transparent, to not be open and let the world see what happened will create doubt and distrust in the judicial system,” Kirk family lawyer Jeffrey Neiman told Graf.

Investigators say Robinson went to a rooftop near where Kirk was speaking and shot him once through the neck as the activist was taking questions from a crowd of several thousand people. Kirk was declared dead after being taken to a hospital.

Investigators found the suspected murder weapon – a bolt-action rifle with one spent round – wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near where Kirk was shot.

Robinson’s lawyers earlier this week questioned the reliability of DNA testing used to link the defendant to the towel and gun.

A member of Tyler Robinson’s defense team interrogated a DNA analyst from the FBI about the techniques she used to connect Robinson to the evidence. Defense lawyer Michael Burt cast doubt on the analyst’s conclusions.

“She can’t match Mr. Robinson to the questioned samples,” Burt argued.

But forensics expert Lawrence Quarino said law enforcement agencies use “extremely reliable” tests to determine the probability that a person matches with DNA found at a crime scene.

DNA testing “is the gold standard in forensic science,” said Quarino, a professor and director of the forensic science program at Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania.

Air Force Revokes 135 Promotions Due to Test Scoring Error, Prompting Challenge

The Air Force has admitted that a human error involving an outdated test answer key has compromised this year’s technical sergeant selection process. This mistake led officials to revoke 135 promotions, reallocating these positions to other troops who were rightfully entitled to them.

The incident impacted only the security forces career field of the service. After discovering the outdated scoring key was used for the Specialty Knowledge Test, officials rescored all 2,285 eligible airmen to rectify the situation.

“We owe it to those affected to address it immediately,” explained Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe in a statement. He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation for all involved.

Upon completing the rescoring, the Air Force found that 451 airmen would retain their promotions, although 135 others no longer met the required cutoff score. Consequently, these positions will be offered to another 135 airmen who were initially overlooked in the original process.

Air Force officials said the error was discovered after the promotion list was released and an enlisted promotions team member at the Air Force Personnel Center identified the outdated scoring key. Officials described the mistake as an isolated and unprecedented human error, adding that no other Air Force specialty codes were affected.

Officials said they verified the correct answer key with subject matter experts before rescoring every eligible exam. The total number of promotions did not change, remaining at 586.

“We promote Airmen based on merit, which is established in federal law and policy,” Lt. Gen. Jefferson O’Donnell, the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services, said in a statement. “Who we are as an Air Force, defined by our core values, demands integrity in the meritocratic promotion system.”

The Air Force Personnel Center plans to announce the 135 newly selected technical sergeants in a supplemental promotion release during the week of July 13. Officials said the new selectees will receive adjusted line numbers that will not affect when they are promoted.

The Air Force said it has tightened its review process and is examining how the error occurred to prevent a similar mistake in future promotion cycles. Leaders are notifying affected airmen directly and have set up a hotline to answer questions.

Officials said the mistake was caused by human error, not artificial intelligence.

Lena Dunham recently shed light on her past relationship with Jack Antonoff, making surprising comments just months before details of his separation from wife Margaret Qualley became public.

In her 2026 memoir titled “Famesick,” the “Girls” creator reflected on her nearly six-year romance with the music producer, whom she dated from 2012 to the end of 2017. She mentioned that Antonoff often spent time with an unnamed “teen pop star.”

Within the pages of her memoir, Dunham described an instance when she video-called Antonoff while visiting her grandmother. She found him in the recording studio at their apartment, collaborating with the young pop star, who she admits she didn’t feel threatened by.

The 40-year-old Golden Globe winner recounted that Antonoff, now 42, frequently stayed cloistered in a room with the teen star. She noted how this young artist, whose needs seemed as significant and intricate as her own, affectionately referred to her as “Aunt Lena” when she would make her way to the kitchen with her walker to grab more green tea.

Dunham also shared an anecdote about returning from a doctor’s appointment to find the young pop star emotionally vulnerable on their sectional couch, sobbing on Antonoff’s lap. He comforted her lovingly, saying, “your teens are for experimenting,” in a manner so soothing it nearly moved Dunham to tears.

“It had been so long since he’d spoken to me with that kind of expansive generosity,” she recalled in the book.

Though Dunham never named the woman in question, fans suspected it was Lorde.

Antonoff worked with the “Royals” singer, now 29, on her second studio album, “Melodrama,” in 2015 and 2016. At the time, Lorde — born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor — was 18 and 19 years old.

The hitmaker denied rumors that he cheated on Dunham with Lorde, saying on X in 2018 that he was not “seeing anyone.”

“Normally i would never address rumors but i resent having the most important friendships and working relationships in my life reduced to dumb hetero normative gossip,” he wrote at the time.

“Those relationships are deeply important and sacred. with that said, im not seeing anyone. lol.”

Lorde also shut down the allegations, telling fans on Instagram Live that she and Antonoff were “not dating.”

“For the last time… I love him, he’s awesome. But we’re not dating. Please!” she said in February 2018.

In the memoir, Dunham revealed that Antonoff allegedly threw her pain medication down the toilet after they got into the “worst fight” of their relationship.

The “Too Much” alum said the couple argued when she spoke to Antonoff about her growing reliance on pain medication following her recent hysterectomy.

Dunham wrote that Antonoff’s response “was to go to the bathroom and angrily flush all my pills down the toilet, which necessitated a call to the doctor and a late-night trip to the pharmacy to get more so that I wouldn’t go into withdrawal — from any one of the drugs — overnight.”

Dunham’s memoir revelations resurfaced after news broke that Antonoff and his wife, Qualley, were calling it quits just weeks shy of their third wedding anniversary.

Page Six exclusively reported that the couple — who tied the knot in August 2023 — had challenges in their marriage.

“Jack could be very particular about how he liked things,” a source told us. “He’d often prefer for things to be done the way he thought was best, and Margaret didn’t always feel like her perspective was being heard or given the same weight.”

In a bid to calm growing unrest within Russia, President Vladimir Putin has reacted with anger to Ukraine’s persistent attacks targeting the nation’s oil refineries, depots, and tankers.

During a meeting with his ministers, Putin sought to reassure them by portraying the escalating economic turmoil as ‘temporary.’ He firmly denied claims that Kyiv’s unyielding offensives would undermine his leadership.

This development follows Ukraine’s dramatic overnight strikes on two significant oil hubs. Heavy smoke was visible rising from depots in both Tver and Mikhailovsk in the Stavropol region, exposing further lapses in Russian air defense capabilities.

Ukrainian drone assaults have now disabled as many as 24 oil tankers this week alone, significantly disrupting shipments to the contested Crimea peninsula.

Reports indicate that five additional tankers were struck and set afire overnight in the Azov Sea, exacerbating the crippling supply challenges.

Two were struck in Taganrog Bay, admitted Putin’s top official in Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar.

The major oil depot strikes in Russia overnight were at Tvernefteprodukt in Tver region and LUKOIL-Yugnefteprodukt depot in Mikhailovsk, Stavropol region.

Amid Ukraine’s turnaround in the war, Putin sought to reassure his ministers in a key televised meeting aimed at reassuring the public.

The Kremlin dictator said: ‘It’s absolutely obvious that the enemy [Ukraine] is trying to damage the economy, but most importantly, it seeks to create an atmosphere of anxiety in society.’

He insisted that ‘this goal is unattainable’, claiming – against the evidence of filling station queues across his country, and a feared collapse of the agricultural sector – that ‘resilience of Russia’s energy system is very high, one of the highest in the world’.

Putin failed to explain why Russians are forced to wait days in lines to buy rationed petrol in a major oil-producing country.

He made out there was only ‘temporary’ disruption, triggering doubts about whether he understood the crisis engulfing him due to his refusal to halt the war.

With fuel prices soaring, and millions of vacations to blockaded Crimea cancelled, one pro-war fanatic asked in response: ‘I wonder how the situation will normalise?’

A previous Ukrainian drone onslaught overnight on Tuesday took out two giant Kremlin energy complexes in Nizhnekamsk and Saratov, both engulfed by infernos. 

A military airfield was also set ablaze at Borisoglebsk in Voronezh region and 19 tankers were hit.

It was confirmed that the country’s largest refinery in Omsk, Siberia, was the latest to halt production following an audacious long-range attack.

Meanwhile, Fights are breaking out at petrol stations across Russia as repeated Ukrainian strikes on oil facilities and logistics hubs disrupt fuel supplies.

Shortages of petrol and diesel are paralysing Russia with gargantuan queues at filling stations where prices are spiralling, and people are losing patience.

One Telegram video appears to show two pairs of men trading punches outside a petrol station as a shocked onlooker films the brawl, saying: ‘It’s so scary to live like this.’

Another clip shows a woman yanking a petrol pump away from a motorcyclist accused of jumping the queue. ‘I’ve been waiting an hour,’ he protests, prompting others nearby to shout back: ‘We’ve been here for four hours!’

The latest videos join a growing stream of footage from across Russia over recent weeks, showing ordinary people from Moscow to Crimea brawling over dwindling fuel supplies.

Other clips show motorists throwing punches at petrol pumps, while one video appears to capture a man pulling a gun on someone accused of queue-jumping.

In another incident, the confrontation escalated so dramatically that a woman was left with a bloodied nose after allegedly being punched by an impatient man.

The chaos comes as a European state intelligence report recently revealed that Russia risks an ‘explosive’ banking crisis.

The two-page report also revealed that half a million Russians went bankrupt last year.

While Russia’s banks have mostly weathered the sanctions imposed since Moscow’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the June report says deteriorating loans and growing household indebtedness create an ‘explosive’ risk, just as the EU prepares a 21st package of sanctions it hopes to finalise in July, targeting banks and cryptocurrency networks.

The Russian central bank declined to comment on the assessment, although it has recently played down the risks of a major banking crisis.

With the cost of a four-year war with Ukraine draining state coffers, Russia has increasingly leant on banks to support companies and borrowers. The report says this has lumbered banks with risks, as the economy teeters.

The Economy Ministry cut its gross domestic product​ growth forecast to 0.4 per cent in 2026 from 1.3 per cent previously and to 1.4 per cent in 2027 from 2.8 per cent.

The intelligence report, titled ‘Note on the probability of a banking crisis in Russia in 2026′, said banks have been pushed to give subsidised loans to defence companies, homebuyers and others. It noted that state-backed credit programmes, loan restructurings and government support masked the banks’ vulnerability.

‘The situation creates the illusion of a dynamic economy that, in reality, conceals an explosive situation which an economic shock, such as an ambitious package of sanctions against banks … could trigger,’ said the report.

Lending to defence firms, regional state-backed projects and homeowners has increased the amount of loans that may never be repaid, the authors said.

Keeping Lampard happy 

When Lampard led the celebrations at Coventry’s victory parade following their march to the Championship title, some at the club were wondering whether he had taken charge of his last game.

Daily Mail Sport understands Lampard had some concerns about whether he would be given a realistic chance of keeping Coventry in the Premier League. Recent seasons suggest promoted clubs need to spend at least £100million to have a shot at survival and sometimes even that is not enough.

It is also beyond doubt that Lampard was on the list of Fulham and Crystal Palace and had he been first choice for either club, he would have had a decision to make. Palace have long admired Lampard.

Yet it would have cost about £5m to prise Lampard from Coventry and in the end, the former Chelsea and England midfielder was happy to stay at the club where he has revived his reputation.

But Lampard asked often last season for significant improvements to the squad and facilities and he will be watching closely. 

By the time the transfer window closes on September 1, Lampard needs to be satisfied he has a squad to fight for survival. Otherwise, Coventry’s season could get very tricky, very quickly.

Where they need to strengthen

Among Coventry’s top priorities is to re-sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who did brilliantly on loan last season. Yet Daily Mail Sport can reveal Brighton are currently demanding £30m for the 25-year-old, who is seen in FA circles as a future England goalkeeper.

That price tag has certainly raised eyebrows at Coventry, given Rushworth has yet to play in the Premier League and is not first choice at Albion. Keep an eye on this one in the weeks ahead.

Coventry also hope to tie up a club-record deal for Swiss centre back Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, who is expected to cost up to £20m. They need a new left back, too, and midfielders with similar running power to Frank Onyeka, who has completed a permanent switch from Brentford after an excellent loan spell.

This goes to the heart of owner Doug King’s plans. How far is he willing to push the boat out to improve Coventry’s chances of staying up?

The Sky Blues are expected to earn at least £115m from the Premier League’s broadcast deal yet King is unlikely to blow it on players alone. When sketching out plans in the spring, it is thought Coventry were reluctant to pay more than £50,000 a week to potential signings. If they stick to it, that will rule them out as an option for plenty of players.

There are contracts to arrange, too. Haji Wright has been the club’s top scorer for three seasons in a row and, like winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, has only one year remaining on his deal. Jack Rudoni, perhaps Coventry’s best player, has two years left and is also likely to be offered improved terms.

Yet unless King has a significant change of heart in the weeks ahead, Coventry are unlikely to spend as heavily as Sunderland, who committed £161m on transfers after promotion 12 months ago. That may cause tension between owner and manager and this is where Dean Austin comes in.

Austin’s crucial role

The Coventry transfer chief is perhaps the most important cog in the wheel, certainly on the football side of the club – which is why King promoted him from head of recruitment to sporting director last week.

Though relatively low-profile, Austin is regarded as one of the best in the business and at Coventry, he has proved it. Wright, Rudoni, Sakamoto, Ephron Mason-Clark and Milan van Ewijk joined Coventry on Austin’s watch and all were instrumental in promotion.

Austin trusts his eyes and those of his scouts at least as much as he does data.

After making more than 450 appearances as a player, Austin has developed into a top-class transfer operator and has passed the FA Level 5 course for technical directors. Working with wealthy owners can be a challenge yet Austin has earned King’s trust.

Once a deal reaches the crucial stages, King will step in. With more than 30 years’ experience in trading commodities, King backs his skills as a negotiator. But in the shark-infested waters of the Premier League transfer market, they will be tested to the limit.

Improvements off the pitch 

Newly-promoted clubs need to worry about much more than the playing squad. The broadcast and media requirements for the Premier League dwarf those of the Championship and given they led the table for most of last season, Coventry were able to do some early groundwork.

Away fans must now be offered at least 3,000 tickets at the CBS Arena which means Coventry have had to adjust how home and visiting supporters are segregated. More space needs to be allocated for television gantries while there has been investment in flash interview areas and digital cabling.

It is thought the club briefly considered switching the away section to the opposite end of the ground before deeming it too disruptive. These necessary improvements are understood to cost up to £8m.

The training ground, located in the Warwickshire countryside, has been upgraded but further work may be needed to bring it to Premier League standard. The club’s academy has only Category 2 status, which means it can be difficult to attract the best youngsters in the area.

Coventry will have retail bank Monzo as their front-of-shirt sponsor for the third successive year and it is proving a strong relationship. In January, Coventry fans were offered a home shirt for 1p if they opened a Monzo account – with impressive chief business officer Nicola Ibbetson steering the ship, expect more clever moves like that.

Coventry also recently opened a new retail store at the stadium, costing about £1.5m, and have an ongoing partnership with the Haas Formula One team. 

So, can they stay up?

Coventry’s survival chances will probably be determined by how much King is prepared to invest in the squad.

Even a huge spend will not guarantee survival and if Coventry were relegated, they would be well placed to make an instant return, with at least two years’ parachute payments behind them.

Would King be open to outside investment? Virtually every owner is, though securing it is another matter. How many potential investors would be prepared to take a minority stake in the club if it gave them limited influence?

Perhaps King looks at the landscape as something like this: We finished above Ipswich and Hull last season and can do so again. All we need is for another club to perform as badly as Wolves did last year, and that would be enough for safety.

As things stand, Coventry’s squad needs significant surgery. The coming weeks will tell us a great deal about King’s short and medium-term ambitions for the club.

San Antonio Tow Truck Driver Returns Home After 137 Days Following Loop 410 Accident

His family witnesses incremental progress each day, yet they continue to seek justice by urging anyone with information to help identify the hit-and-run driver responsible for altering their lives dramatically.

SAN ANTONIO — Almost five months after surviving a harrowing hit-and-run incident, 24-year-old Julian Ramirez has finally been able to return to the comfort of his home.

On Friday, July 3, the San Antonio tow truck operator and father of six reunited with his family after enduring a grueling 137-day journey through hospitals and rehab centers. He sustained life-threatening injuries while assisting a motorist in distress along Loop 410.

Although the road to full recovery remains daunting, his family acknowledges with gratitude every small triumph that each day brings.

Initially, doctors delivered grim predictions to Ramirez’s family, warning them of the possibility that he might never regain consciousness, speak, or move again.

Instead, his mother, Brandy Salinas, says he has done all three.

Ramirez now lives with Salinas, where recovery has become a full-family effort. His stepfather serves as his daytime caregiver, while Salinas cares for him before and after work. His aunt and sister also help with daily therapy sessions.

“We keep pushing him, and he’s home,” Salinas said.

According to San Antonio police, Ramirez was working as a tow truck driver just before 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 16 when he stopped on the shoulder of Loop 410 between Ray Ellison Boulevard and Medina Base Road to assist stranded motorists.

As Ramirez exited his tow truck, investigators said a silver sedan traveling in the second lane struck him and fled without stopping to help.

Ramirez suffered life-threatening injuries. Doctors amputated his right leg to the hip. He also suffered traumatic brain injuries, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, facial fractures, strokes, a skull fracture and injuries to his colon that required multiple surgeries.

Because of swelling on his brain, surgeons removed a portion of his skull during the early stages of his treatment.

By the end of March, Ramirez was stable enough to move to a long-term acute care hospital. Forty-nine days after the crash, he was able to sit up. He later spent seven weeks in long-term acute care before transferring to an inpatient rehabilitation facility in May.

On June 4, surgeons replaced the portion of his skull that had been removed.

“He’s trying to talk, he moves more, he’s understanding more,” Salinas said. “Every day is a big difference.”

Salinas said her son continues to prove doctors wrong.

“He’s a fighter,” she said. “He’s always been my hardhead, stubborn child. That’s one thing about Julian. He’s never been a quitter. The minute you tell him he can’t do something, the more he’s going to do it.”

She said there were moments when she feared she would lose him.

“I’ve had the conversation no parent wants to have with their kids — that if he’s ready to let go and not fight, it was OK, his kids would be OK,” Salinas said. “Every day he would tell me — not tell me, but show me — ‘Look, Mom, I’m not done.'”

One of Ramirez’s latest milestones has been learning to communicate again.

“One of the last things we were working on is him just telling me how old he is by showing me his fingers,” Salinas said.

When Ramirez finally returned home, he wasn’t alone.

Dozens of tow truck drivers escorted him home with flashing amber lights, driving along the same stretch of Loop 410 where the crash happened.

Among them was Jenna Martinez, owner of R&M Towing and Roadside Service.

Martinez said she and her husband previously worked with Ramirez, and after opening their own towing company, they had hoped Julian would join their team.

“He was going to be right beside us and he was our biggest supporter,” Martinez said.

The escort, she said, was about showing Ramirez he has an entire community behind him.

“It was amazing seeing various tow trucks coming and seeing them with their lights on supporting,” Martinez said. “Just to show our support that he is not alone, that we are there for him — not just with him but with his family.”

Martinez said Ramirez’s story has resonated throughout the towing industry.

She hopes his case also serves as a reminder for drivers to slow down and move over for emergency and service vehicles.

“We see stories every day of our fellow tow drivers getting hit because people are not moving over, not slowing down. They see the lights and they ignore it,” Martinez said. “Tow truck drivers put their lives on the line every day, and we want to come home, too.”

While Ramirez’s recovery continues, his family says they’re still searching for answers.

Salinas said she’s frustrated with the pace of the investigation and hopes someone who lives or works along Southwest Loop 410 will take another look at surveillance video from the morning of Feb. 16.

She said detectives have video from Ramirez’s tow truck and vehicle parts recovered from the scene, and believes someone may still have overlooked evidence that could identify the driver.

“At this point, I’m angry,” Salinas said.

San Antonio police confirmed the investigation remains active and no arrests have been made. When the driver is identified, police said that person will face a charge of collision involving serious bodily injury.

Meanwhile, support for Ramirez continues to grow.

A GoFundMe created to help cover his medical expenses and support his six children has raised more than $16,700 from 314 donors, nearing its updated goal of $18,000.

Salinas says despite everything her son has endured, she has no doubt he will keep fighting.

“I don’t have words for it because I know he’s gonna do it,” she said. “He’s gonna show up and show out because that’s what he does.”

Charlie’s Kirk Family Urges Judge to Disclose Concealed Evidence in Alleged Assassin’s Trial

The family of the late Charlie Kirk, including his widow and parents, has expressed frustration at being unable to view critical evidence during a preliminary hearing for the accused murderer. They contend, in a recent court document, that victims are entitled to not only attend legal proceedings but also have full access to observe the presented evidence.

In a supplementary notice filed this past Wednesday, Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, petitioned a judge in Utah to ensure all evidence introduced in the remainder of Robinson’s preliminary hearing is made visible in real-time to everyone present in the courtroom legally. Additionally, she requested the court to display previously presented exhibits from the first three days of the hearing that had not been shown to the public.

The family’s formal statement is unequivocal: every piece of evidence submitted during the preliminary hearing should be visible to all lawful attendees, as their filing declared. “Hiding evidence from those in the courtroom, as occurred today, undermines transparency. Without transparency, speculation and conspiracy theories about Mr. Kirk’s tragic assassination will likely multiply, eroding trust in the justice system. No one desires this outcome.”

The filing says the Kirk family waited 10 months for the preliminary hearing and traveled to the courthouse to witness the proceedings, only to find themselves unable to view certain evidence admitted during testimony.

Attorneys wrote the family was “present in body” but denied the ability to “meaningfully observe the preliminary hearing.”

The filing also contends that Utah law guarantees crime victims and their representatives the right to be informed of, present at and heard during important criminal justice proceedings, and argues those protections are meaningless if victims cannot see the evidence being presented to the court.

“The right ‘to be present’ is hollow if the victim or his representative is physically in the room but is prevented from seeing the evidence the Court is receiving,” the document reads. “A right to attend that does not include the ability to perceive what is happening is not meaningful presence at all.”

The filing asks the court to display all previously admitted exhibits that were not shown publicly during proceedings scheduled for July 9 and to require that all future evidence admitted during the preliminary hearing be displayed openly and in real time for everyone lawfully present in the courtroom.

It also asks the judge to prohibit evidence from being received in a manner that conceals it from courtroom observers.

Robinson’s preliminary hearing began Monday and is expected to continue through the week. Prosecutors must establish probable cause for the case to proceed to trial on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, which carries the potential death penalty.

Hard-Right Politician Leaves UK Parliament to Battle Unusual Bin-Dressed Rival

Nigel Farage, Britain’s well-known anti-immigrant politician, now finds himself in a potentially humiliating situation as he faces perennial satirical contender Count Binface in an upcoming by-election following his surprising decision to leave parliament.

Count Binface, the brainchild of comedian Jonathan David Harvey, has become a familiar figure in UK elections with his distinctive bin-shaped helmet, adding a whimsical twist to the political landscape.

Farage’s unexpected resignation has sparked concerns of a political misstep, as other major parties have chosen not to compete for his seat in southeast England, leaving the field practically open for Count Binface.

Identifying as an “intergalactic space warrior,” Count Binface stands alone so far as the only declared candidate poised to run, adding a layer of irony to the proceedings.

Farage, known for leading the hard-right Reform UK party, made the announcement of his resignation as the representative for Clacton during a televised address on Tuesday, a position he has held since July 2024.

The shock announcement came as Farage is the subject of a parliamentary probe over the non-disclosure of a £5 million ($9.65 million) donation from Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.

The donation was made shortly before Farage was elected an MP and was revealed earlier this year by The Guardian newspaper, which reported earlier this week that bankers raised concern with the National Crime Agency that it may have been laundered money.

The agency told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency it would not confirm whether a complaint had been made.

‘People versus the establishment by-election’

Farage, whose party leads national opinion polls, also faces scrutiny over separate alleged gifts from George Cottrell, a 32-year-old crypto entrepreneur previously convicted of fraud.

Farage insists he has done nothing wrong and accused opponents in parliament of using sleaze investigations as a “political tool” against him.

The Reform UK leader did, however, discuss cryptocurrencies with Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey in September 2025.

In a letter to a Labour MP seen by AFP, Bailey said the bank was regularly subjected to lobbying and “no policy changes have taken place as a result of interventions by Mr Farage”.

In showmanship typical of the 62-year-old Brexit campaigner, Farage said he would seek re-election, pitching the vote as a “people versus the establishment by-election” fight.

But his plans appeared in disarray after the ruling Labour party, the main opposition Conservatives, centrist Liberal Democrats, and fringe parties, the left-wing Greens and far-right Restore Britain, announced they would not field candidates in the by-election.

Outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Farage’s move a “desperate stunt” from someone “up to his neck in sleaze”, while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch branded it a “fake by-election” designed to cause a distraction.

Rupert Lowe, who split from Farage last year and formed Restore as an even-further-right alternative that has eaten into Reform’s support, called the proposed poll an “unnecessary sham”.

‘Arguing with a bin’

Binface, who regularly runs in UK elections with his bin-shaped head and long cape, announced on Wednesday that he would put himself forward to take on Farage.

“I will be a unity candidate and pledge to build at least one affordable house,” he wrote in a post on X on Tuesday, adding: “Leave him [Farage] to me.”

The parody candidate won 95 votes, a 0.2 per cent share, when he ran against Britain’s likely next prime minister, Andy Burnham, in a by-election in Makerfield near Manchester last month.

His manifesto for that campaign included forcing cyclists who break traffic laws to ride unicycles instead, and capping the cost of a croissant at £1 ($1.93).

At present, a serious independent candidate could still announce a run.

Polling expert John Curtice told the BBC that Farage had been hoping for a “very substantial political circus” but may end up with a “relatively damp squib” if no one challenges him properly.

Farage’s decision to step down means the investigation by Daniel Greenberg, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, into the Harborne donation will be temporarily suspended.

The government on Wednesday granted Farage’s request to quit and a by-election should take place within 35 days.

“If he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won’t stop him,” finance minister Rachel Reeves said on X.

Farage comfortably won Clacton in 2024 with a majority of 8,405 and more than 46 per cent of the vote.

If he is re-elected, the probe would likely resume.

If Farage is found to have breached the rules, he could be suspended from the House of Commons, and another by-election may be triggered.
