Socceroos Enthusiasts Host Vibrant Festival in Unexpected Venue

0

Imagine a sprawling parade of soccer enthusiasts donning Aussie flags, green and gold shirts, and setting off flares. Yet, this isn’t taking place in Australia nor is it near any World Cup stadium across Mexico, Canada, or the United States.

Welcome to Jabal Mohsen, a vibrant neighborhood in the city of Tripoli, Northern Lebanon, where for the first time, locals have banded together to host a festival in support of Australia for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Videos spreading across the internet capture the scene: an entire street filled with passionate Socceroos fans. Some wave AI-created banners depicting the team’s players, while others joyously chant, “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, oi, oi!”

From a car window, Omran, one of the festival organizers, exuberantly declares, “This is the least we can do for this great country!”

He adds, “This is just our way to say ‘Thank you, Australia, from Jabal Mohsen!'”

Lebanon has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, and this time around the Socceroos are partly to blame for that.

So why is there so much love for Australian football in this part of North Lebanon?

A connection that runs deeper than football

Ali, who was also one of the organisers of the 19 June festival, said he’s a fan of Socceroos legend Tim Cahill, and that his kids are fluent in “Oi, oi, oi!”.

The 38-year-old lives with his wife and two young children in Jabal Mohsen, which is home to Tripoli’s Alawite minority.

He told SBS News the connection between Jabal Mohsen and Australia runs deeper than football.

“In almost every household in Jabal Mohsen you will find that one of the family members lives in Australia,” he said.

A young girl sits at an outside table surrounded by cheering men. They're all wearing green and gold Aussie Pride T-shirts.

Australia’s ambassador to Lebanon, Tom Wilson, told SBS News it’s common to see Australian flags in Tripoli.

“A lot of the Lebanese Australians who came to Australia in the 70s and 80s are mainly from Tripoli … so there’s really strong connections there,” he said.

Ali, who has a brother living in Sydney, said the festival was about showing love and support to their friends and family.

“[The parade] was a way to give back to the Aussie community both here and in Australia.”

Other communities in Jabal Mohsen held similar festivals this year for Brazil and Germany, nations that are also home to large Lebanese diaspora communities.

Some of the festival’s organisers were Australian citizens, in town visiting family.

Family from Australia provided not only emotional support, but financial help for community back home when they need it.

“It’s a common practice,” ambassador Wilson said.

“If someone needs an operation or urgent assistance for something, they send a message into WhatsApp, and they all throw in a couple hundred bucks.”

“There’s an appreciation of Australia from these people because they know the community is willing to do that.”

Football fans without a field

Suleiman, 30, is a sports photographer with the North Lebanon Football Association and a supporter of both Australia and Brazil at the World Cup.

“My favourite players are Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo. I just love beautiful football,” he said.

Speaking to SBS News through a translation app, he explained there are few outlets for sport in his home town.

“Jabal Mohsen is alive, it breathes sports and loves football, but unfortunately it does not have a football pitch.”

Two men stand arm-in-arm in front of a cafe wearing green and hold Aussie Pride T-shirts.

“You see a 25- or 26-year-old with incredible talent who could have gone very far, but the situation in Lebanon in general has not been good.

“Whether because of war or the economic crisis, many people end up leaving their passion behind and turning to other things.”

Once a prosperous city, Tripoli was devastated by the Lebanese Civil War, which raged from 1975 to 1990.

In more recent times, the city continues to experience ongoing effects of the 2019 economic crisis, with high concentrations of poverty and much of the infrastructure in disrepair.

In February, 15 people were killed when two neglected residential buildings collapsed in Tripoli, according to Al Jazeera.

The city is also not insulated from recent conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

Since March — when Hezbollah began firing on Israel in retaliation for the joint Israel-US attack on Iran — Israeli attacks have killed 3,600 people and displaced over a million across Lebanon, according to the Lebanese health ministry and aid groups.

“It’s been quite difficult over the past few months,” Wilson said.

“Obviously, there’s been a lot of conflict, there’s been a lot of displacement. People have been forced to leave their homes. It’s a very difficult time for the whole country.”

‘All our hearts are with them’

On a recent visit to Tripoli, Wilson arranged to meet the organisers of the Socceroo fan festival.

“Actually, one of the reasons I was up there in Tripoli was to put down the foundation stone on a project we’re assisting through our direct aid program at the embassy,” Wilson said.

The project is a football field.

The Australian ambassador to Lebanon sits around a table with Jabal Mohsen locals wearing green and gold shirts, they each have a bottle of water on the table in front of them.

After seeing videos of the Socceroos parade online, Wilson met with the organisers at a local Tripoli cafe.

“We had a good chat about the Socceroos. We all hoped they’d win a few more games,” Wilson said.

Ali told SBS News he was proud the parade had an impact on the community in Jabal Mohsen and in Australia.

As for the Socceroos’ chances in the upcoming match against Egypt, Ali said a win would be tough but possible.

“All our hearts are with them.”

Cities Prepare for Weekend as Expert Warns of Potentially Deadly Teen Group Incidents

0

Cities nationwide are gearing up for the Fourth of July weekend, preparing to counteract potential ‘teen takeovers’—events orchestrated via social media that have caused concern in various states. Law enforcement agencies are adopting preventive measures to curtail any disruptions before they unfold.

These so-called teen takeovers have been springing up across the country, primarily organized through social media platforms. As the holiday nears, police departments are mobilizing resources and strategies to avert disturbances and safeguard the Independence Day celebrations.

The police in Falmouth, Massachusetts, have ramped up their presence and deployed drones to handle potential teen takeovers on local beaches. Their aim is to prevent large gatherings from escalating into unsafe situations, according to Masslive.com.

Lt. Ryan Hergt shared with reporters that the force has implemented measures to control large gatherings, including those involving teenagers, after facing challenges in managing such events in past years.

In Ocean City, Maryland, police in June stopped a teen takeover that was advertised on social media as a “Late Night Beach Party Link Up.” Police learned about the event through the Baltimore Police Department, and arrested several of the alleged organizers before the teen takeover could even happen, according to WTOP.

Some towns are going even further. In Greenville, North Carolina, the city’s mayor enacted a curfew ahead of the holiday weekend in response to threats of a teen takeover, according to The Reflector.

“Greenville Mayor P.J. Connelly has established another temporary curfew for juveniles under the age of 18 in downtown Greenville to help ensure their safety,” a statement from the city reads.

The city dealt with a teen takeover on June 20 in which a large number of fights broke out in the downtown area, with social media posts threatening another similar event on June 27. As a result, a curfew was declared last weekend as well.

Past teen takeovers have proven the events have potential to become dangerous.

In Georgia’s Tybee Island, an “unpermitted pop-up event” in April ended up with gunshots ringing out, which sent scores of teens running for their lives.

Margaret McLean, a former prosecutor, told News Media that law enforcement doesn’t need to wait for chaos to unfold.

Teen Takeover

“It’s a big preventative measure that police are using. They’re monitoring the social media… arresting some people for rioting. If these organizers are worried that they may face criminal charges or they may get a criminal record or possibly even go to jail, they may step back and decide not to organize one of these events,” McLean said.

She said teen takeovers are such a priority for police because of the potential for them to turn violent, fast.

“People can be trampled,” McLean said.

“What makes them so dangerous is fights can break out and somebody, some innocent bystander can get pushed down or hurt, or they can fall and hit their head and then die from a bad head wound,” she added.

Prince William Joins Travis Kelce’s Podcast for Royal Wedding Insights

0

Today, NFL star Travis Kelce welcomed a special guest to his podcast—none other than Prince William—just as celebrations for Kelce’s impending nuptials with Taylor Swift are heating up in New York City.

The podcast episode, part of the popular New Heights series, begins with an enthusiastic introduction from Travis’s brother, Jason Kelce. Opening with what Prince William described as ‘quite an intro’, Jason energetically read, ‘Our guest today is the six-foot-three Prince from London, England.’

He went on to elaborate, ‘That’s right, the President of the English Football Association, the Vice-Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Cornwall, the Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, Earl of Chester, and the Prince of Wales, please welcome His Royal Highness, Prince William!’

Following Prince William’s appreciative response, Jason warmly remarked, ‘We had to do it big for you, had to do it big.’ The complete episode of the podcast is slated to be released at noon Eastern Time (5 PM UK time) on Friday.

This appearance marks a significant podcast moment for Prince William, who humorously admitted he was ‘hoping’ for an invite to Taylor and Travis’s wedding in New York after striking a friendship with the couple during a meetup at Wembley Stadium in 2024.

The pop singer and NFL star posed for a selfie with the Prince of Wales as well as two of his children Princess George and Princess Charlotte at the show.

But a report in People this week suggested William and Kate will not be attending, and they have not been pictured among the army of A-listers swarming Manhattan.

The wedding was raised as a topic in an interview on Heart in May, when co-host Amanda Holden asked whether he had received an invite – and William cheekily responded: ‘No comment.’

He added: ‘I’m hoping, and I’m sure there might be an invitation around, but we’ll see.’

Taylor and Travis hosted an intimate rehearsal dinner for their closest family and friends at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater on Thursday. They were joined by around 100 guests ahead of their wedding today, where 1,000 people are expected to attend.

That said, reports have been running wild that the pair may already be legally married. Some sources said they intended to exchange vows in front of 100 of their nearest and dearest on Thursday, before a blowout, festival-style party tomorrow.

Taylor turned the iconic venue pink for her wedding rehearsal dinner with the New York venue being lit up with lights and adorned with dusty pink curtains, while the interior was decked out with peach-colored flowers.

It’s been said that Taylor built a custom princess ‘castle’ inside MSG and has supposedly bought out every available calla lily flower in the city.

Famous guests including Selena Gomez, Jack Antonoff, Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper, as well as the singer’s childhood friend Abigail Anderson, were seen heading inside, while Taylor herself was spotted being swept into the back.

One pal who has not made the guest list is Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, who were seen a hundred miles away after being iced out from the festivities following a falling out over Blake’s legal battle with Justin Baldoni.

The bride arrived at her rehearsal dinner two hours ahead of its start time in a blacked-out silver Suburban with an extended roof and communications antennas.

She was later seen returning home well after midnight, spending more than eight hours partying in what was said to be her first-night bash.

The Madison Square Garden extravaganza has left plenty of locals less than impressed, though, with 139 NYPD officers assigned to oversee the festivities.

According to Daily Mail sources, that number includes five lieutenants and 14 sergeants, with over 1,000 guests expected to be in attendance.

A full street closure will also go into effect, allowing crews to erect a ‘drive through tent’ next to a separate ‘entrance tent,’ according to a special event permit.

For New Heights, meanwhile, the Prince’s appearance is a major coup and just the latest A-lister the brothers have managed to tie down for their show.

In the past, Travis and Jason have interviewed the likes of Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Caitlin Clark, Paul Rudd, Rory McIlroy – and of course Swift herself.

What began as a football podcast has evolved into one of the most-downloaded shows in the world, with the pair attracting major figures from Hollywood, sports, entertainment – and now even royalty.

New Movies & Shows To Stream This Weekend: Human Vapor, Silo, Dutton Ranch + More

This week is particularly notable for the premiere of high-caliber series. If top-notch visual effects are what you seek, Human Vapor on Netflix might just be the show for you. The series centers on a killer who slips through the grasp of justice by vaporizing into air. Silo, making its third season debut on Apple TV, aims to delve into the origins of its enigmatic, dystopian world. Meanwhile, over on Paramount+, don’t miss the climactic conclusion of Dutton Ranch; where, in true Texas fashion, the drama promises to be larger than life.

New on Netflix July 2: Human Vapor

Human Vapor emerges as a thrilling new addition to the sci-fi genre, a product of a collaborative effort between Japan’s Toho Studio and renowned executive producer and writer Yeon Sang-ho. Known for acclaimed works like Train to Busan, Hellbound, and Parasyte: The Grey, Yeon brings his distinctive touch to this modern reimagining of the classic 1960 film The Human Vapor. The story revolves around a murderer who transforms into gas to bypass barriers and evade capture, making for a spectacular display of visual effects that promises to be a feast for the eyes.

New on Prime Video July 3: Project Hail Mary

Produced and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who has been sent on a mission to save planet Earth from a cataclysmic extinction event when it turns out the Sun is dimming. While in space, Grace meets an alien named Rocky who is on a similar mission to save his own planet and as the two collaborate to prevent the existential collapse of their home worlds, they become unlikely pals. The film arrived on digital platforms and MGM+ earlier this spring, but now it’s also streaming on Prime Video.

New on Apple TV July 3: Silo (Season 3)

Apple TV’s great science fiction series Silo returns for season 3 this week, and the story takes on a time-hopping twist. While the show will still focus on the small population of people forced to live in an underground silo for their survival, this season will also depict the origins of the silo in a parallel story set centuries earlier. Rebecca Ferguson, Common and Harriet Walter return to the cast, and this season features a few new faces including Colin Hanks, Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman.

New on Paramount+ July 3: Dutton Ranch: Season 1 Finale

The first season of Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton Ranch comes to an end this Friday. The series, about Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler’s (Cole Hauser) relocation from Montana to Texas, earned Paramount+ its highest ratings ever for a series premiere, and now the drama comes to an end… for now. The show has already been renewed for season two.

Brittney Lee Saunders Addresses Public Filming Incident with Fan

Brittney Lee Saunders, celebrated both as an influencer and a fashion designer, has carved out a fortune through her multifaceted career.

Yet, despite the enviable position of having over 600,000 Instagram followers, the 29-year-old seems to grapple with some of the less glamorous aspects of her prominence.

In a recent episode that brought this to light, the Newcastle, NSW native took to Instagram to express her frustration. A fan had surreptitiously filmed her in public without her consent while she was accompanied by her partner, AJ. Saunders, unreserved in her response, went on to publicly call out the admirer on social media.

‘The girl who I just caught videoing me while I was out with AJ… As I said, do not take a video of me,’ she exclaimed in the video shared with her audience.

She continued, ‘I’ve literally looked over my shoulder and there’s this girl like zooming in on me on her Snapchat, like how embarrassing.’

‘I said across the room, “Hey, please don’t take videos of me”, and then she was really awkward,’ she continued.

‘And you’re probably gonna send that video to your friends. So send them this instead, send them this video of me.

‘I hope you feel embarrassed, because it’s f***ing embarassing.’

Brittney went on: ‘Just A PSA to anyone. If you see someone out and about that you follow online, don’t take a video of them, like go and say hello. You might have a nice time. You could have had a drink with us.

‘I don’t know if I come across as unapproachable on my social media. I know it’s  awkward if you don’t want to say hello to someone, but don’t video someone, don’t take photos of someone without their permission, just smile in their direction or come and say hello,’ she added.

Ohio Family Under Investigation After 16 Children Rescued from Severe Conditions

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — At a press event held in Vinton County, Attorney General Andy Wilson teamed up with Sheriff Ryan Cain to address the public about a significant investigation involving the alleged abuse and victimization of 16 children. The officials indicated that the inquiry may require extended time due to several challenging factors.

A primary concern is the reported limited communication abilities of the children, with authorities at one point describing them as being alarmingly “feral.”

Certain details remain unclear, such as whether these children received any formal education, and how they could have stayed hidden in a residence for nearly four years. According to Wilson, it is suspected that the majority of these children were confined in a 12-by-12 room located on Ohmer Street in the Village of Hamden, Ohio, a short distance from Wellston.

The arrested individuals include Gary Siders (73), Christina Siders (66), Gary Siders II (36), and Elizabeth Siders (33), each facing 16 charges related to child endangerment.

Nexstar’s WCMH learned from court records that the ages of the children are 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 11, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4 (twins), 2 (twins) and 1.5 years (twins). The Vinton County School District said there is no information indicating any of the children involved have been enrolled as students.

It has not yet been confirmed who the parents are of all 16 children, but Wilson said it is an intra-family case. The family of 20 lived in a home with five total rooms and one bathroom, encompassing 1,336 square feet, with an additional 518 square feet in a basement, according to Vinton County property records.

The home is part of a trust in the name of Hamden woman who died in April 2025. The house was up to date on its property tax payments, the most recent payment being paid in February in the amount of $960.88. And, according to Hamden Village Water Department, the house did have running water, with sewer and trash service all in the name of Christina Siders.

An employee with the Mason County Clerk of Courts also confirmed that on March 31, 2008, Gary Siders II and Elizabeth Siders were married at the ages of 18 and 15, respectively. The oldest child found in the home was born two months later, May 30, 2008.

Vinton County deputies investigate a home in the Village of Hamden after 16 children were rescued from “horrific” conditions. (WCMH)

Mason County borders Ohio’s Gallia County, where the Siders spent time as early as 2005, according to court records, and as late as 2017. Wilson also said the family has ties to Jackson County, Pike County and possibly Wisconsin.

The Siders adults were arrested after a warrant was issued on a case in what the sheriff’s office said was a parallel investigation. The court-authorized search warrants were part of an ongoing investigation involving allegations of domestic abuse and child neglect, but unrelated to the current case. No one knew children were present at the home.

Gary Siders II also had a warrant for his arrest stemming from an indecent exposure charge in May, according to municipal court records. That warrant was filed on Monday.

Court records show Gary Siders II is accused of exposing his private parts twice on May 23, once on May 27, and again on May 29. Records state all four incidents happened at the Ohmar Street home and involved people “who are not members of his household.”

“The house seemed abandoned,” Vinton County resident Josh O’Dell said. “It was a shock because we had never seen or heard anything from that house. I had never seen a child in that yard.”

Deputies arrived at the home and investigators had to wear masks, observing what appeared to be stacks of garbage inside the home. Wilson said the conditions were so deplorable that agents couldn’t reach certain areas in the house.

“This case continues to reveal the unimaginable conditions these children were forced to endure. I said (Wednesday) that what investigators encountered was pure evil, and the evidence we’ve uncovered since only reinforces that assessment,” Wilson said.

Vinton County prosecutor William Archer said the children are in the process of being placed in protective custody with Ohio Jobs and Family Services. No other families or children in the area are at risk, he said.

“One of the investigative challenges is that (the children) are limited. They can communicate but it’s extremely limited and some not at all,” Cain said. “The scene is horrific and these are horrific allegations.”

Archer added that the oldest child is developmentally still a minor and could not spell their name.

Several of the children were reportedly hospitalized for serious injuries, with two of them being air-lifted to trauma centers in Columbus.

All four suspects pleaded not guilty Wednesday, with three of the four having been assigned counsel as of Thursday morning. Judge Laina Fetheroff Rogers issued them a $300,000 bond apiece. Each charge carries a minimum sentence of 2-to-8 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of 12 years.

Gary Siders’ attorney, Dorian Baum, released a statement in response to an NBC4 request for comment, citing in part the early stages of the investigation and asked that the “court of public opinion” reserve judgement of his client.

“While this case has quite obviously received intense media attention and the accompanying speculation across the internet that comes with any story of that nature, the reality is that we are just at the beginning stages of this case,” Baum said. “Mr. Siders is entitled to the same presumption of innocence that every person charged in this county should and does enjoy, so while there is little ability to stop all speculation, conjecture, or uncorroborated guess-work from taking place, I would ask that we all let the process play out.”

Champaign County Construction Workers Confront Heat Challenges Following Incident Involving Colleague

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — For construction workers toiling under the scorching sun, enduring the intense summer heat comes with the territory. However, it isn’t the only challenge they face these days.

Five weeks have passed since the tragic incident on I-74 in Champaign, where 65-year-old Steven Cornett lost his life during an overnight shift. His memory remains vivid in the minds of his fellow workers, shadowing their daily routines.

Increased vigilance and a noticeable police presence have become part of the scene for construction crews, who are balancing these safety measures with the demands of the job and the punishing heat.

“It’s rough. It’s really rough,” remarked Michael Bean, owner of Bien and Sons, a trucking firm based in Mansfield, as he described the challenging conditions facing his team.

Crews are working in the blazing sun in a construction zone, in clothes you probably wouldn’t want to wear with temperatures in the 90s.

“We wear a safety vest, a hard hat, steel toed boots and pants,” Bien said. “You’re not really supposed to have shorts. You’re not really supposed to have sleeveless t-shirts.”

He has been working on the construction zones on I-74 and I-57 near Champaign for five years.
Bien knows firsthand how hard it is to work a job like his during a heat wave.

Sometimes, they tuck away under a bridge to get some shade, but they don’t take breaks very often.

“They don’t mind if you stop and take a break, but you’ve got 25 trucks at the same time, loading in a constant loop,” Bien said. “So, you load, you run. Hopefully, you have air conditioning, or you can get some air in your truck because that’s about the only relief you have.”

He said that one thing people don’t always realize is how hot it gets when you’re standing on asphalt that has just been laid, or the black dirt where they’re cutting into the ground. Bien said it’s almost 20 degrees hotter there than it is anywhere else.

And while they’re trying to stay cool, they’re also trying to stay alert.

“The danger is an everyday thing, something we all try not to think about, but when you have cars that won’t slow down, which they still haven’t ever since the accident we had on I-74,” Bien said.

He’s talking about Cornett, who was hit and killed in May working the same construction zone as Bien.

“Something like that happens, it changes everything. Now, everybody is extra careful, extra cautious,” Bien said. “We’re watching the traffic a lot more than we were before and trying to be prepared if anything is to happen. We have what we call a jump zone, like ‘Where are you going to dive? I’m heading that way if something bad happens.’”

Whether it’s speeding cars or high heat, together they build, and together they return home.

“We try to keep an eye on each other, make sure everybody’s cool, but it’s just kind of a rule, watch your brother and watch the guy next to you,” Bien said.

The Crucial Role of Upcoming Games in Shaping the Mets’ Season Trajectory

    0

The transition to a new chapter for the Mets under interim manager Andy Green hasn’t exactly been groundbreaking.

After suffering a 9-3 defeat to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, and heading into a four-game weekend series against Atlanta, the Mets (36-51) have managed just two wins in Green’s first six games. This performance continues to distance them from the already unlikely wild-card playoff spot.

Despite Green’s ambitious talk of bringing “joy” and being “willing to challenge” his players during his spirited introductory press conference, there are limits to what he can achieve with a roster that appears average at best. It’s anticipated that he will return to his duties as the senior vice president of baseball development after the season, according to David Stearns.

Thus, the decision to dismiss Carlos Mendoza wasn’t centered on pushing the team back into the competitive mix this season—such a turnaround, given the circumstances, was never the goal.

Maine Hero Uses Truck to Save Moose Calf from Bear Attack

During what seemed to be just another fishing excursion, a couple from Maine found themselves at the heart of a dramatic wildlife encounter. Using their pickup truck, they managed to save a moose calf from an attacking bear, ultimately allowing the young moose to reunite with its mother.

Todd Malcolm recounted to The Associated Press his belief that without intervention, the bear was certain to catch the calf.

Reflecting on the moment, Malcolm stated, “I knew what I had to do, and I just did it.”

The Malcolms’ unexpected adventure began when they noticed a female moose near the forest’s edge in Telos Township, Maine. Seizing the moment for a photo opportunity, they stopped their truck, unaware of the tense wildlife drama about to unfold.

“I said to Elvia, I said, ‘Grab your phone because you’re going to get a chance to get a picture of a moose,’” Todd Malcolm said.

After parking their truck, the couple noticed the moose appeared unusually agitated — and, as it turned out, for good reason.

Moments later, a bear and the moose calf burst from the woods and sprinted directly toward their truck, they told the AP.

Todd Malcolm said he was convinced the bear would catch the vulnerable calf and decided to intervene.

“I put the truck in drive and I just stepped on the gas,” he said.

Malcolm said he didn’t want to hurt the bear and only intended to put the truck between the predator and the calf.

His plan worked, and the bear darted to the side of the road before disappearing back into the woods.

“Boom, gone, right in the woods,” he said.

The ordeal was just as nerve-racking for Elvia Malcolm.

“My heart was racing because I did not want to witness the bear catching the calf,” she told the AP. “As soon as the calf got past the truck, and we were able to get the bear to give up the chase, I looked up the road and saw that they were together, the mom and the calf.”

Despite the chaos, Elvia Malcolm said she still managed to capture several photographs of the dramatic encounter.

“I really thought I probably got like a bug on the windshield when I started to look at them,” she said. “I took them through the front windshield of the truck. I wasn’t outside the truck. No way was I getting outside the truck.”

The couple later continued their fishing trip after watching the moose calf reunite with its mother.

Madonna and Lourdes’s Tense Handshake Sparks Feud Rumors

    0

In an intriguing moment, Madonna and her daughter, Lourdes Leon, appeared together to talk about their latest musical release.

Teaming up for a song titled “The Test,” the duo explored the complexities of their often-turbulent relationship, fueling rumors of a potential discord between them.

As they prepared for the London debut of Madonna’s upcoming album, “Club Confessions,” in association with Grindr, the iconic singer and her daughter spoke candidly about their deeply emotional connection.

During a conversation with Bob The Drag Queen, who was interviewing Madonna about her album “Confessions II,” Lourdes was introduced. The pair greeted with a handshake, soon leading to Madonna offering a warm kiss on Lourdes’ cheek.

The initial awkwardness between them seemed to fade as Lourdes, 29, complimented her mother, saying, “Hello, you look so pretty,” to which Madonna responded, “so do you”.

Yet Lourdes seemed to prickle at Madonna’s response, shooting back: ‘why do you sound surprised?’ mimicking her saying ‘so do you’ deadpan.

As Madonna laughed it off by remarking ‘like mother like daughter’, Bob seemed uncomfortable with the tension, saying: ‘wow!’

Lourdes then revealed it was her idea to collaborate on their new song, as she mused: ‘I think that between a mother and a daughter and a relationship it’s kind of – there’s a lot of things that are unspoken.

‘There’s a lot of love that’s unspoken but also a lot of tension and emotions that are kind of difficult to put into words because it can be so emotional.

‘A way that I thought would be easier for us to speak about these things would be through art, which is always something me and my mum have connected over that’s really brought us together.’

Madonna then weighed in on the experience of working together, saying: ‘it was very emotional and there were moments when I felt like crying, hugging her.

‘Because as she says we don’t always agree on things but we love creativity and art has always connected us.

‘It was a very magical moment and we both had to be vulnerable.’

When asked to sum up her experience of working with her mother on The Test in one word, Lourdes confessed: ‘healing’.

Following the interview, Madonna then took to the stage with DJ Stuart Price as she performed singles from her new album.

The singer had designed the venue so that guests would have to enter through a giant sculpture of her legs, while drinks on offer were themed to her songs, named Spicy Danceteria, Absolut Holiday Highball and Into? The Groove Grindr Mule.

Guests were also invited to buy merchandise, with Madonna fan Jo revealing she spent £65 purchasing a T-shirt with ‘don’t be a vibe kill’ on the front.

In The Test, Madonna sings candidly to her daughter about how she ‘tried to put you on a pedestal,’ although Lourdes herself ‘didn’t ask for all the flashing lights.’

The Material Girl freely admits she ‘didn’t think of how it could disturb or how it hurt,’ sharing that she wished she ‘knew the pain I caused’ and understood the impact of the fact that ‘my butterfly was always being watched.’

Lourdes then reflects on her upbringing in the shadow of a world-famous mother, whom she characterised as ‘my reason to be, or what I want, or look like, what I wear, all the clothes on my back and what I attract.’

She sings about striking a balance in which she is able to ‘trace the line of what you have sewn’ and still ‘keep my own design, make it a landscape, make it alive.’

Madonna previously admitted her daughter Lourdes Leon was ‘very standoffish’ to work with on their new song, as she finally addressed their rift.

She opened up to Graham Norton on his BBC show Madonna & Graham and said Lourdes ‘held onto a lot of resentment’ with her over the years.

Madonna, who shares Lourdes with her ex Carlos Leon, wrote a song with her daughter for her new album Confessions II.

Despite the tension between the mother and daughter duo, Madonna said writing a song together ‘healed’ their relationship.

In the episode, which aired Friday night, Madonna explained: ‘She approached me, she’s been very revenant to work with me. She doesn’t want to be perceived as my daughter, taking advantage of her privilege.’

Graham asked: ‘How does that feel? Was it like working with a professional or a proud mother?’

‘It was kind of neither’, she said. ‘She’s been very standoffish and working at her own pace, and I respect that deeply. She’s a great songwriter and has a much better voice than I do.

‘But then one day she came to me and said “You know what, I realise I’ve been holding onto something” and maybe it’s a kind of I want to say anger, what’s another word, maybe resentment?

‘At the end of the day, she didn’t ask for this. She had been through her adolescence struggling with those feelings for a long time.

‘So she came to me and said “Let’s write a song together, I think it will be a very healing experience. You say exactly what you want to say and I will say exactly what I want to say”.

‘And I was like “Okay, you’re on, let’s do it, I was so happy”. Her lyrics are beautiful.’

While Madonna and Lourdes are now close and often collaborate together, the pair have touched on their issues in past interviews.

In 2021, Lourdes called her mother a ‘control freak’ and admitted that she paid for her own college tuition and first apartment to escape her.

‘We don’t get any handouts in my family. Obviously, I grew up with extreme privilege. There’s no denying that,’ she explained to Interview magazine.

‘But I think my mom saw all these other kids of famous people, and she was like, “My kids are not going to be like this.”

‘Also, I feel like if your parents pay for things, then it gives them leverage over you. My mom is such a control freak, and she has controlled me my whole life. I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school.’

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Madonna praised her ‘insanely talented’ eldest child but said that she lacked the same drive that had made her a household name.

Since branching out on her own, Lourdes has found work as a model, a celebrity socialite, and as an indie musician.

Confessions II, which drops this Friday, is currently Madonna’s best-reviewed disc since 2005’s Confessions On a Dance Floor.
