Heroic Wife Defends Dying Husband After Violent Son’s Attack: Police Report

Inset: Tyler Lachmann (KOLD/YouTube). Background: The Arizona neighborhood where the conflict with Tyler Lachmann’s parents unfolded, reportedly at his hands (Google Maps).

A tragic incident in Arizona unfolded as a woman tended to her severely injured husband, placing him in bed after their son allegedly assaulted them unexpectedly. Despite checking on him through the night and dressing him in comfortable pants, she discovered him lifeless the next morning, law enforcement reports state.

The couple’s son, Tyler Lachmann, 39, has been accused of viciously attacking both parents, including slamming his mother’s head against the concrete during the incident on June 28 at their Tucson residence. He faces charges of first-degree murder and abuse of a vulnerable adult.

A legal document accessed by Law&Crime reveals that the 72-year-old mother initially misled authorities about a burglary when she called in her husband’s death, aiming to shield her son Lachmann with this false account.

Prosecutors allege that Lachmann was previously on conditional release due to another felony case. Additionally, he has a pending charge for allegedly pointing a firearm at his girlfriend’s mother on April 29, coupled with a threatening statement. His mother has informed the prosecution about her son’s struggles with mental health issues.

“On the night of the 28th of June, 2026, without provocation, Tyler attacked [his parents],” the complaint alleges. Lachmann was “repeatedly punching” his mom and “slamming her head on the concrete” before turning his attention to his father, per the complaint.

“Tyler went after [his father] as well when the three of them were in the kitchen,” the complaint says. “When the assault stopped, [the mother] was able to help [the father] to his bed and she took his shirt off and changed his pants to sweatpants.”

Prosecutors say Lachmann’s mom “checked on” his father “throughout the night” before going to bed. “In the morning, [the mother] noticed that [the father] has stopped breathing and said that he was cold to the touch,” the complaint says.

Police and paramedics responded after the mom called 911. Paramedics declared Lachmann’s dad dead at the scene. Pima County sheriff’s deputies arrived and were told by Lachmann’s mom that they were “robbed and assaulted by two masked men,” according to the complaint.

“Both [parents] had numerous injuries to their face, head, and arms consistent with an assault,” the complaint says. “An interview was conducted with [the mom] where she initially repeated the statement of two masked men, however, during a follow up interview stated that she had made those statements to protect her son.”

Lachmann is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on July 6 and a preliminary hearing on July 10. He is being held without bond.

San Francisco Giants Place Matt Chapman on 10-Day IL Due to Abdominal Strain

0

PHOENIX — The Giants are facing a challenging stretch as they will play without not just their starting shortstop but also their third baseman for at least the next ten days.

On Wednesday, third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain. To fill the gap in the infield, the team has called up utility infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A, ensuring they meet the minimum requirement for infielders.

With Willy Adames sidelined for the third consecutive game because of back spasms, Koss immediately stepped into the starting lineup at shortstop. Casey Schmitt, who had been covering shortstop duties for the last two games, returned to his preferred position at third base.

Despite Adames being unavailable since Sunday’s game, the Giants initially chose not to adjust their roster. As a result, when Chapman exited Tuesday’s game in the seventh inning, they lacked a ready infielder to step in. Outfielder Jonah Cox, who hadn’t played infield since his college days, was pressed into service at second base, with Luis Arraez taking over third, a position he hadn’t played since 2022.

Chapman revealed he’d been experiencing intermittent discomfort around his hip flexor and lower midsection since early May. The pain became intolerable after making a barehanded grab to get Gabriel Moreno out at the end of the sixth inning.

Chapman attempted to stay in the game and took his next at-bat in the top of the seventh but was clearly in pain and was replaced on defense in the bottom half of the inning.

The timing is unfortunate given Adames’ current absence, but the Giants are hopeful the shortstop will be ready to return Friday when they begin a series against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Additionally, Chapman was already planning on missing three games sometime during what will now be an IL stint. His wife, Taylor, is expecting their first son, Jack, this weekend.

Music Teacher Allegedly Lures and Murders Sister-in-Law PhD Student Amid Longtime Obsession: Report

0

In a disturbing turn of events, a New York music educator stands accused of murdering his sister-in-law, a 25-year-old woman pursuing her Ph.D., following more than ten years of alleged obsession, prosecutors allege.

Joseph Horner, aged 27, faces charges of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Victoria Castle. Authorities from Nassau County discovered Castle, a Ph.D. candidate at Stony Brook University, unresponsive within a residence in North Massapequa on June 29.

A felony complaint lodged at the Nassau District Court accuses Horner of intentionally causing Castle’s death, although specifics of the accusations remain undisclosed.

The New York Post reported details from the arraignment, during which Nassau County prosecutors claimed that Horner had harbored an obsessive fixation on Castle for over a decade.

Prosecutors also alleged he lured the Stony Brook University Ph.D. student by asking her to help move a piano while his wife was away on a bachelorette trip before placing her in a chokehold, sexually assaulting her and strangling her.

The Post further reported prosecutors said Horner called 911 after the attack, remained at the home until police arrived and admitted to detectives that he committed the killing.

News Media has requested the arraignment transcript from Nassau County Court to independently review prosecutors’ statements. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment beyond the record made during the June 30 arraignment.

According to Nassau County police, officers responded at approximately 8:44 a.m. Monday to a North Oak Street residence after receiving a 911 call requesting an ambulance for a woman who was not breathing.

Officers found Castle unconscious inside the home. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Horner was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder, police said.

Court records show Horner is scheduled to return to Nassau District Court in Mineola on Thursday morning.

According to information on her Facebook account, Castle was pursuing a Ph.D. at Stony Brook University and worked there as a research assistant.

Less than three years before her death, Castle shared a heartfelt message celebrating her sister’s marriage to Horner.

“My sister, my person, my partner in chaos, is now married to one of the most wonderful people in the world,” Castle wrote alongside a wedding photo. “I love you both forever!”

Horner is employed as a music teacher in the Oceanside School District. Following his arrest, the district announced he had been placed on administrative leave.

“We understand that this news is deeply disturbing,” Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Harrington said in a statement.

District officials said Nassau County authorities informed them the allegations “have no connection to the school district or its students.”

“This staff member has been placed on administrative leave effective immediately, pending further review,” the district said. “The Oceanside School District is committed to maintaining a safe, professional, and trustworthy environment for our students, staff, and community. We stand by that commitment at all times.”

Horner’s attorney, Gregory Grizopoulos, acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but urged the public not to rush to judgment.

“These are very serious and disturbing allegations, and there’s a very stark contrast between the allegations and his beloved reputation that he had as a teacher, with both his students and his fellow teachers,” Grizopoulos told News12 Long Island.

“His family is devastated by the loss of their family member, Victoria, as well as the allegations against their son, Joe. We’ll continue to evaluate the evidence as more details are disclosed to us.”

If found guilty of second-degree murder, Horner could be sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison.

Horner’s attorney did not immediately respond to News Media’s request for comment.

Investigating the Last Known Whereabouts of Missing 26-Year-Old Tourist in Las Vegas

0

Las Vegas officials are currently working to reconstruct the final steps of an Australian tourist whose disappearance from the city remains unsolved.

Sally Grace Contarino, aged 26, was last spotted on June 20 near Sky Canyon Drive on Las Vegas’s outskirts, leaving investigators searching for clues more than a week after her disappearance.

Embarking on a solo two-week journey in the United States, Contarino spent part of her vacation in Palm Springs, California, before heading to Las Vegas on June 15, where she checked in at the Bungalows Hostel situated along South Las Vegas Boulevard.

In an unusual turn of events, just two days later, she appeared in a live stream shot by a pickup artist outside a 7-Eleven on the city’s fringes, where he was seen asking for her contact information.

“Excuse me, I noticed your striking beauty and wondered if I might be able to get your number, by any chance?” he asked her.

Ms Contarino smiled politely and shrugged off his advance, telling him: ‘I have a boyfriend.’ There’s no suggestion of wrongdoing on the part of the pickup artist.

On June 19, Contarino sent a text message to a friend telling them she was ‘about to hike up Lone Mountain’, before preparing to fly back to Australia the next day.

Surveillance video showed Contarino gambling at Timbers Bar and Grill from 8:30pm to 10:30pm that evening, before returning to the Bungalows Hostel in the early hours of June 20.

Contarino was on a solo two-week vacation to the US and arrived in Las Vegas on June 15. Two days later, she was seen on the live stream (pictured) of a pickup-artist outside a 7-Eleven on the outskirts of the city, who filmed himself asking for her phone number

Contarino checked out of the hostel on the morning of June 20 but left her luggage, and she had breakfast at a nearby cafe.

In her last known location, she was seen on the outskirts of Las Vegas near a Starbucks on Sky Canyon Drive at 1pm on June 20.

She was due to fly home to Melbourne from Los Angeles and purchased a Greyhound bus pass from Las Vegas to California, but the ticket was never used.

She is believed to have boarded a bus to Mount Charleston, a hiking area in the north-west area of Red Rock Canyon National Park, before vanishing.

Fears have been raised over what caused Contarino to vanish, with locals noting that the Bungalows Hostel is a one-star rated hotel in one of the seedier parts of the city.

Staff at the Timbers Bar and Grill recalled that she was in ‘good spirits’ the night before her disappearance, and said she gambled a small amount before leaving around 10:30pm.

However, staff also said the Bungalows Hostel was located in a neighborhood that is ‘not great for a girl alone.’

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department has now declared her ‘missing and endangered’, and said it is urgently searching for any information as to her whereabouts.

‘She might possibly be in severe emotional distress and in need of medical assistance,’ a police spokesman said.

Contarino’s unusual movements around Las Vegas in the days before she vanished prompted fears among locals that she may be a victim of human trafficking.

The dark criminal industry is a significant problem in Nevada, where authorities have estimated there are as many as 58 victims per 100,000 people.

Human trafficking expert Mike Bartel confirmed she matched the profile of victims, and a local told the Daily Mail of her fears when she saw Contarino’s movements were far from the usual tourist haunts on the Las Vegas casino strip.

‘It seems she was getting all around town which is odd in itself and she may have already been trafficked,’ said the woman, whose high-school aged daughter had been targeted by traffickers.

‘The areas she was seen in… that’s not normal behavior or safety measures for someone who usually travels alone.’

Daily Mail understands Ms Contarino’s sister Amy travelled to the US several days ago, and her other sister Lauren, based in Queensland, has been raising awareness online.

She told US-based true crime forum Websleuths that her sister only had ‘a little bit of money’ and suffered from ‘mental health struggles’.

Another local, commenting on a true-crime forum, said: ‘I live in Las Vegas and know the area well. There’s absolutely no reason to be at a 7-Eleven in that part of town, unless she got lost, or got taken there by someone she met or knows.’

‘That’s a very bad area, heavy drug use and sex trafficking in that part of the city, arguably even worse than where she was staying,’ they said.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has now opened a missing persons case for Ms Contarino and is seeking public assistance to locate her.

Local hospitals have also been alerted and asked to review records in case she has been admitted.

Ms Contarino was last seen wearing a grey or blue sweatshirt, denim shorts, black and white shoes and a bag.

She has brown hair and brown eyes and a slim build.

It is understood police have recovered Ms Contarino’s luggage, used search dogs with her clothing and undertaken a grid search of the areas where she was last seen.

Two Shot Near Chicago’s Royal Sonesta River North: Over 100 Gunshots Reported

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — In the early hours of Wednesday, a deadly shooting occurred near a hotel in the River North neighborhood, resulting in one man’s death and injuring another, as reported by the Chicago police.

The incident unfolded around 3:20 a.m. in the 500 block of North State Street.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

According to police, the two men—aged 65 and 30—were outside when they suddenly heard gunshots and felt the impact of being shot.

The 30-year-old victim, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The 65-year-old victim suffered a foot injury. He was also taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is currently listed in fair condition.

An employee at the Royal Sonesta Chicago River North said he heard multiple shots, but no guests or anyone from the hotel was involved.

Surveillance video showed to ABC7 by a hotel employee showed two people getting out of a light-colored sedan with large guns and quickly firing off shots before driving away.

Alderman Brendan Reilly said the shooting was gang-related.

“Gun violence downtown is totally unacceptable – just as should be unacceptable in any of Chicago’s neighborhoods,” Alderman Reilly said in a statement. “The brave women and men who serve in the Chicago Police Department are working hard to protect our communities. Like all downtown residents, I am grateful for their service and hard work. But we need a greater presence overnight.”

He said five hooded and masked gunmen got out of a gray Honda Accord, all armed, and fired at the 30-year-old man, whom Reilly said had an extensive criminal background. He said the attackers fled in the same vehicle, which was later found burned.

Kiley Cleckner lives in an apartment at the hotel.

“This is the most insane thing I’ve seen this far,” she said.

Cleckner recalled being jolted awake by what she initially believed were fireworks.

“There were enough going off that by the time I got to my window with my camera they were still shooting,” she said.

Cleckner said she saw at least three men get back into a car that sped west on Grand Avenue.

There were over 100 gunshots. Chicago police counted at least 110 shell casings from the deadly shooting.

Video of the scene showed bullet holes in the hotel’s window and facade.

Hotel guest Cindy Monroe said she saw someone being put in an ambulance from her hotel room window.

“Just sad again, just that the human, you know, people’s lives were taken,” Monroe said.

“I was all shocked,” said Harris Carr, who also lives in the building. “I just moved out here in February; so I heard about the violence and all that, but didn’t have an experience it yet. I don’t know what you could possibly do with the 100 shots; that’s a little nuts.”

Although analysis from the ABC7 Chicago data team shows violent crime in River North is down more than 18 percent in the past year, Cleckner said empty storefronts in the neighborhood create blind spots where crime can occur.

“It’s obviously identified by these groups of people that they can out hang there and do crazy things and not get caught,” she said.

Reilly said he has spoken with Chicago police and requested increased late-night patrols downtown during the summer months and ahead of the July 4 weekend.

Area Three detectives are investigating. Roads in the busy area were closed Wednesday.

Police said no arrests have been made.

Gainesville resident faces charges for alleged inappropriate conduct with child

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have charged 39-year-old Samuel Antonio Mitchell with lewd or lascivious conduct following accusations of inappropriate behavior towards a minor.

According to a report from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, the young victim confided in an adult that Mitchell had inappropriately touched her under her underwear as she slept. The incident allegedly ended abruptly when Mitchell dashed into another room.

The adult, who had briefly left to use the bathroom, recounted that upon returning, Mitchell entered the room with her. Shortly thereafter, the juvenile informed the adult of the inappropriate contact.

Investigators surmised that Mitchell left the scene hurriedly upon hearing the sound of the toilet flushing, indicating he was aware of someone’s presence in the house.

Post Miranda, Mitchell denied touching the child in any way; he reportedly said he had smoked marijuana earlier in the evening and had two “Buzz Ball” drinks. He reportedly said he doesn’t do other drugs anymore and then said he smoked “molly” four days before the incident; however, he later reportedly changed his story and said he had smoked “molly” two days before the incident, and then he said he had not smoked molly in two years and had smoked cocaine four days and two days before the incident. He said he did not believe he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, but the deputy reported that he could smell alcohol on Mitchell’s breath; Mitchell said he’d just had a “Buzz Ball” in his hands.

Mitchell reportedly said the adult and the child were lying about the incident to get him in trouble, but the deputy noted that it didn’t make sense for both of them to wake up from sleep at the same time and come up with a story to get Mitchell in trouble.

Mitchell has been charged with lewd or lascivious conduct. He has 17 felony convictions (non-violent) and eight misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); he has served seven state prison sentences, with his most recent release in January 2025. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

6 Chair Workouts to Boost Walking Strength for Seniors Better Than Lunges

Feeling like walking has become more challenging after reaching 60? Discover six chair-based exercises designed to enhance the strength and stability of your steps.

>

Walking is ideally a simple, effortless activity, yet after the age of 60, many individuals observe their walk becoming less assured and their pace slowing. The muscles that drive our forward momentum lose strength over time, a process exacerbated by prolonged periods of inactivity. Many of my clients once thought that merely increasing their walking distance was the key to improving their gait. Although regular walking is beneficial, fortifying the muscles that facilitate each step proves even more impactful.

Lunges are often championed as excellent exercises for the lower body, yet they aren’t suitable for everyone. They require significant balance, knee strength, and hip flexibility, which can be daunting for many seniors. Chair exercises, in contrast, provide a safer substitute while still effectively boosting the muscles crucial for walking. They also enable consistent training without the fear of losing balance or stressing your joints excessively.

Through years of assisting those over 60 enhance their movement skills, I’ve observed substantial progress from straightforward chair routines. These workouts focus on fortifying the hips, thighs, calves, and core, simultaneously reinforcing movement patterns vital for each step. Integrating these exercises a few mornings a week can significantly improve your ability to enjoy longer walks, ascend stairs with ease, and maintain a more independent lifestyle.

Seated Marches

Whenever I evaluate someone’s walking pattern, I pay close attention to how well they lift each knee. Weak hip flexors often lead to shorter strides, slower walking speeds, and an increased chance of catching the toes on uneven ground. Seated marches strengthen those muscles while engaging the lower abdominals and improving coordination between the hips and core. I frequently use this exercise early in a program because almost anyone can perform it comfortably. Clients often notice that their legs feel lighter and their walking rhythm becomes smoother after only a few weeks of practice.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall near the front of a sturdy chair.
  • Keep both feet flat on the floor.
  • Lift one knee toward your chest.
  • Lower it with control.
  • Alternate sides continuously.
  • Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.

Sit-to-Stand

Few exercises translate to better walking as directly as repeatedly standing up and sitting back down. Every repetition strengthens the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core while reinforcing one of the most functional movement patterns in daily life. I recommend this exercise to nearly every older client because it improves leg strength without requiring complicated equipment. As those muscles become stronger, walking hills, climbing stairs, and rising from chairs all begin feeling easier. Consistent practice builds the foundation for more powerful, confident steps.

How to Do It

  • Sit near the front of the chair.
  • Place your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Lean forward slightly.
  • Press through your heels to stand.
  • Sit back down slowly.
  • Perform 10 to 15 repetitions.

Seated Heel Raises

Strong calves help push your body forward every time your foot leaves the ground. Unfortunately, they’re one of the most overlooked muscle groups in walking programs. I include seated heel raises because they improve lower-leg strength while increasing circulation around the ankles and feet. Clients often report feeling more stable during longer walks after adding them to their routine. Better calf strength also helps reduce fatigue by making each step more efficient.

How to Do It

  • Sit upright with both feet on the floor.
  • Raise your heels as high as possible.
  • Keep your toes planted.
  • Pause briefly.
  • Lower slowly.
  • Complete 15 to 20 repetitions.

Seated Knee Extensions

Walking depends heavily on strong quadriceps, especially during the moment your leg straightens to support your body weight. Seated knee extensions isolate these muscles without placing excessive stress on the knees, making them an excellent option for older adults. I often prescribe them for clients rebuilding strength after periods of inactivity because they’re simple, effective, and easy to progress. Over time, stronger quadriceps improve stride stability and make everyday movement feel more secure. They also help reduce the effort required for common tasks like climbing stairs.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall with both feet flat.
  • Straighten one leg completely.
  • Hold briefly at the top.
  • Lower slowly.
  • Complete 12 repetitions.
  • Repeat with the opposite leg.

Seated Toe Raises

Many older adults begin shuffling their feet because the muscles along the front of the lower leg gradually weaken. Seated toe raises target those muscles directly, helping improve toe clearance during walking and reducing the likelihood of tripping. I often introduce this movement alongside calf raises because the muscles work together during every stride. Clients frequently notice smoother walking mechanics and greater confidence on uneven sidewalks after strengthening both sides of the lower leg. It’s a small movement with an outsized impact on everyday mobility.

How to Do It

  • Sit with both heels on the floor.
  • Lift your toes toward your shins.
  • Keep your heels planted.
  • Pause briefly.
  • Lower under control.
  • Perform 15 to 20 repetitions.

Seated Cross-Body Knee Lifts

I like finishing walking-strength routines with a movement that combines strength, coordination, and core activation. Seated cross-body knee lifts challenge both the lower body and the muscles responsible for rotational stability, which play an important role in maintaining a natural arm swing and walking rhythm. The alternating pattern encourages the brain and body to work together, improving coordination as well as muscular endurance. Many clients tell me they feel more fluid and confident when walking after making this exercise part of their morning routine. It’s an excellent reminder that efficient walking relies on the entire body, not just the legs.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall with your feet flat.
  • Lift your right knee.
  • Reach your left hand toward the knee.
  • Return to the starting position.
  • Alternate sides in a steady rhythm.
  • Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.

Donald Trump Experiences Mixed Outcomes as Political Influence Intensifies

0

President Donald Trump of the United States has experienced a blend of outcomes from the Supreme Court, which has both endorsed and struck down various cornerstone policies of his administration.

Within the chambers of the Supreme Court, many of Trump’s executive actions, including the sweeping and ambitious policy moves implemented during his initial months in office, come under rigorous review by state-appointed judges.

This past Tuesday marked the conclusion of the court’s term, with its nine state-appointed justices delivering pivotal verdicts on some of Trump’s most contentious executive orders and legislations.

The rulings addressed a spectrum of issues from immigration policies and transgender athletes’ rights in sports to the repercussions of one of Trump’s high-profile dismissals.

Read more below to uncover details about Trump’s pivotal Tuesday.

Defeat: Birthright citizenship

Trump suffered a massive blow to the anti-immigration initiatives at the heart of his second presidency after the Supreme Court rejected a bid to restrict birthright citizenship.

The move was part of a raft of executive orders signed on the first day of his second stint at the White House, announcing that children born to parents in the United States who were there illegally or on temporary visas would not automatically become US citizens.

Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit and red tie, sits at his desk clasping his hands together.

On Tuesday, the court ruled 6-3 to maintain the right to American citizenship for nearly everyone born on US soil — even when their parents are not US citizens.

“Children born in the United States to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States and are citizens at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause,” chief justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s opinion.

SBS News previously reported that Trump’s move drew parallels with reforms introduced in 1986 under the Hawke government. In Australia, children of temporary residents qualify for citizenship after living in the country for the first 10 years of their lives.

Following the ruling, the US Justice Department released a memo directing prosecutors to investigate “birth tourism” and promising to “zealously protect the sanctity of United States citizenship”.

The executive order was part of a broader campaign to limit immigration, with widespread detention and deportations sparking protest and unrest across the country.

Defeat: You’re (not) fired!

The Supreme Court thwarted Trump’s bid to fire one of the governors of the Federal Reserve — the US central bank.

Lisa Cook was the first black woman to sit on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. The former economics professor was appointed to the board by the Biden administration in 2022.

Lisa Cook (right) in a grey jacket is sworn in as Fed Reserve Governor by Jerome Powell (left) in a black jacket in front of American flags and bibles.

In late 2025, Trump announced he had sufficient grounds to believe Cook had made false statements in one or more mortgage agreements. He ordered her removed from the board with immediate effect.

Cook denied the allegations, and took legal action on the grounds Trump had no authority to remove her.

The decision means Cook can remain in her post while legal proceedings over her position continue in a lower court.

Trump has taken drastic steps against the US central bank, including a public campaign against former Fed chairman Jerome Powell. He has demanded that monetary policymakers lower interest rates to stimulate the economy, in moves that have raised questions about the central bank’s independence.

Victory: Transgender sports bans

In a major victory for one of the Trump Presidency’s fiercest culture-war battles, the Supreme Court upheld state laws barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s school sports.

Public schools and college sports teams across more than two dozen Republican-led states will continue to enforce rules requiring athletes to compete according to their sex assigned at birth, rather than their gender identity.

Trump issued an executive order last year allowing federal agencies to deny funding to schools that permit transgender athletes to compete on girls’ or women’s teams.

Challenges were brought by transgender students who argued that the bans violated the federal civil rights law barring sex discrimination in education — known as Title IX.

The argument was rejected by conservative justice Brett Kavanaugh, a longtime coach of youth women’s basketball, who delivered the Supreme Court’s opinion on the ruling.

“May schools determine eligibility for women’s and girls’ sports based on biological sex? The answer is yes,” Kavanaugh wrote.

The ruling lands amid an escalating national push by conservatives to regulate transgender participation in public life, with a purge of trans and gender diverse officers serving in the US military; and 27 states enforcing gender-affirming health care restrictions.

Trump responded to some of the rulings on his Truth Social social media platform.

On the birthright citizenship ruling, he wrote in part: “The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation …”

On transgender sports bans, he wrote: “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!”

Victory: Campaign spending

In a win that could prove seismic for the upcoming midterm elections, the Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted restrictions on the amount of money a political party can spend on an individual candidate.

The Republican Party brought the case to the Supreme Court before the 2024 election, with now vice president JD Vance leading the push, arguing that spending restrictions were against the US First Amendment.

Vice President JD Vance in a blue suit and purple tie sitting on a golden couch looking a little concerned

Since 2010, spending restrictions have been eased for corporations, unions and other outside groups. Political parties, however, were limited in how much they could spend on things like advertising.

Supporters of the restrictions argued the rules prevented wealthy donors from funnelling money to their chosen candidate, and would curb corruption.

The court’s ruling was condemned by Senate Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer, who in a statement accused the Supreme Court of giving “the very wealthy and big money special interest groups the green light to buy elections”.

US-based non-profit Open Secrets estimated the 2024 presidential election cost a total of US$15.9 billion ($24 billion) across both parties, including congressional campaigns — making it the most expensive election since Republican George W Bush won in 1998.

The much-anticipated summer transfer window has officially opened and will remain so until September 1. Clubs are gearing up for what promises to be an eventful period of strategic signings as they prepare for the upcoming season. Here are the latest updates from Simon Jones and the Daily Mail Sport team…

Brighton land Portugal young gun

Brighton has proudly announced the acquisition of Portuguese winger Rodrigo Rego, a player who has been making waves in the Under-21 international scene.

The 20-year-old has secured a five-year deal for an undisclosed amount, after an impressive stint at Benfica. Last season, he made five appearances for the first team and marked his Champions League debut coming off the bench against Ajax.

‘Last season, he experienced the intensity of men’s football both in the league and on the Champions League stage, showcasing his progress and talent.’

‘We are confident that we can nurture his talent further, helping him to achieve his full potential. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work with him as he embarks on this new chapter.’

Spurs’ summer overhaul continues with Tonali

Tottenham have reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The two clubs are finalising details on a £92.5million deal, with add-ons centred around Champions League qualification taking that fee to £100m.

Daily Mail Sport understands a six-year deal is being discussed, though personal terms have already been agreed. Tonali is reputed to be earning around £275,000 per week on his new contract at Spurs.

Talks intensified earlier on Wednesday evening as Spurs looked to deliver their new-look midfield for Roberto De Zerbi, just 24 hours after agreeing to pay West Ham £85m for Mateus Fernandes.

Earlier, Tottenham accepted a £50million offer from Brighton for Croatia centre back Luka Vuskovic.

Toure heading for Toon

Newcastle have agreed a fee in the region of £42million with Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Toure.

Daily Mail Sport have previously reported the club’s interest in the wide man, who has been away at the World Cup with the Ivory Coast.

He has now been given permission to travel for a medical, though the deal is still being finalised. Hoffenheim have negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Seagulls swoop for Vuskovic

Brighton have agreed a £46million fee with Tottenham for Luka Vuskovic.

The deal includes a further £4m in add ons plus a 20 per cent sell on and matching rights for Tottenham.

Daily Mail Sport understands a five-year contract is on the table for the Croatia international, who is expected to have a medical in the USA as he is at the World Cup.

It is an improvement on Brighton’s previous offer of £43m plus £2m in add-ons, which was rejected by Spurs.

In June, Spurs completed a £52m deal for Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.

Vuskovic was on loan at Hamburg last season and wanted to continue to play regularly.

The arrival of Van Hecke alongside Marcos Senesi indicated he was not at the forefront of Roberto de Zerbi’s plans despite the fact he was highly regarded by the club.

Swansea bag Salzburg winger

Swansea City have confirmed the signing of RB Salzburg winger Moussa Yeo for an undisclosed fee. However they are losing Ethan Galbraith to Stoke City in deal worth £5million plus add-ons.

Arsenal close on new sporting director

Arsenal are closing on a deal to bring Granada sporting director Javier Alonso to the club after he resigned from his post earlier this week.

Newcastle ask about Gray

Newcastle United have asked about Archie Gray’s situation in talks with Tottenham over Sandro Tonali. However, sources say they have stopped short of making a bid. Tonali remains hopeful they can reach agreement on his fee after indicating to Roberto de Zerbi that he wishes to join Spurs.

Talks are still ongoing on that front with Newcastle awaiting improved figures.

Chelsea seal Palestra deal

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of 21-year-old Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

‘It’s important for me to have Xabi Alonso as the manager,’ said Palestra, who has signed a six-year deal, with the option of a further year, in a deal worth around £48million.

‘I have had two conversations with him and I’m very happy because he told me what he wanted from me. I’m very happy to know him and to start training with Chelsea.’

Chelsea plan to test Sunderland by submitting a second bid for their captain, Granit Xhaka.

The Stamford Bridge outfit saw their first offer worth £8million on Saturday turned down with those inside the Stadium of Light taking a dim view of that valuation. Sunderland have insisted their 33-year-old skipper is not for sale this summer.

However, with Xhaka keen on being reunited with his former Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Chelsea are ready to return in another effort at securing their target.

Sources are not disclosing how much their second bid is set to be worth at this time, though Chelsea did feel their initial bid was fair and close to Xhaka’s value.

Chelsea’s interest in Xhaka has largely been driven by Alonso, whose four-year contract in charge of his new club officially kicked in today (July 1).

Together, Alonso and Xhaka did the Double with Leverkusen in 2023-24 as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. They also reached the final of the Europa League, where they were beaten by Atalanta.

Sunderland signed Xhaka from Leverkusen last summer in a deal worth £13m, plus £4m in add-ons. As captain, he helped them secure European football in their first season back in the Premier League, and is contracted until 2028.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who turns 34 in September, is currently away with Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup.

Newcastle ramp up efforts for World Cup stars

Newcastle United are pressing ahead in their efforts to land new players for Eddie Howe.

Talks are ongoing over Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi and they are emerging as frontrunners for Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure.

Box-to-box midfielder Manzambi plays for Freiburg in Germany and has caught the eye at the World Cup with his brace of goals against Bosnia and man of the match performance, plus another strike in his country’s 2-1 win over Canada.

Manzambi is only 20 and viewed as having a very bright future. He was named the Europa League Young Player of the Season after Freiburg lost to Aston Villa in the final.

Toure is another 20-year-old, who plays in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim.

He plays as an inverted left winger. Fast and good in one on ones Toure would be viewed as a replacement for Anthony Gordon, who was sold to Barcelona.

Hayden Hackney is expected to have his medical ahead of his £16.5m move to Everton from Middlesbrough – as the club remain in talks to sign Tyrique George from Chelsea on a permanent deal.

Dan’s the man for Rangers

Rangers have signed midfielder Dan Neil on a three-year contract after he left Sunderland.

The 24-year-old had been in talks with Southampton and looked set to move to St Mary’s. He also had interest from West Ham.

However, Rangers have moved swiftly to sign the former England youth international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town.

Liverpool get their Jacquet

Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £55m, plus £5m in potential add-ons.

The centre back signs a five-year deal, after agreeing to sign for the club over Chelsea in February, and is expected to be on the upcoming pre-season tour of America.

And Jacquet has assured fans he will be fully fit to start training after missing the end of last season with a shoulder injury. ‘I feel much improved and I will be 100 per cent ready (for the start of pre-season) because I’m a little ahead of schedule,’ he said on Wednesday. ‘With continued hard work I’ll be fully fit before the season.’

Denver Nuggets Extend Invitation to LeBron James Following Lakers Departure

0

The Denver Nuggets have thrown their hats into the LeBron James sweepstakes. While they might not be the obvious frontrunners, they certainly present an intriguing prospect for the acclaimed NBA star.

As reported by The Denver Post, the Nuggets have reached out to James, signaling their eagerness to bring the legendary 21-time All-NBA forward to Denver. As James moves on from the Los Angeles Lakers, after eight impactful seasons that included a championship, an NBA scoring record, and another stellar year achieved at the age of 41, the league watches closely to see where he will land next.

The burning question on everyone’s mind is where this iconic player intends to play next to finish out his career.

Apart from Denver, other franchises vying for James’ talents include Golden State, Cleveland, Miami, and Minnesota, all linked with possible interest.

However, this isn’t a typical free agency saga. Rich Paul, James’ agent, emphasized in a recent interview that they’ve had conversations with “about 12-14 teams.” This suggests nearly half of the teams in the league have expressed some level of interest in adding LeBron to their rosters, highlighting the widespread allure and impact of his potential signing.

Paul also explained that James is not simply chasing the biggest contract.

“I think it’s more so having the ability to compete for the possibility to compete for winning a championship,” Paul said. “I think you can say being competitive. I think you can say having guys who understand how to play at a high level.”

That is where Denver becomes interesting.

The Nuggets cannot offer James the kind of money some other teams might without major roster gymnastics. Luckily, Paul also said maximizing money won’t be the deciding factor. If James is truly open to taking less for the right basketball situation, Denver has a real pitch: Nikola Jokic.

The basketball case is pretty easy to understand.

James and Jokic would give Denver two elite passers who know how to make the game easier for everyone around them. Jokic would still be the center of the offense, but James could take pressure off him as another creator, especially in late-clock situations, transition chances and playoff matchups where Denver needs a different look.

The fit would not be seamless automatically. Denver’s offense runs through Jokic, and changing that would present many dubious realities. James would have to be comfortable picking his spots, playing off the ball more often and acting as a secondary playmaker instead of controlling every possession.

At this stage, that might be a reasonable role and would in a sense mimic his role with the Lakers last season. James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists last season. But on a Nuggets team with Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon already in place, the appeal would be less about LeBron carrying the offense and more about giving Denver another high-level option in high leverage situations.

There is also history here. Nuggets president Josh Kroenke tried to recruit James in 2018 by sending him a throwback Denver jersey. James later called Kroenke a “very dear friend” and said the two had spent time together away from basketball.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has also called Denver a possible “outlier team” for James, especially if he is willing to take some kind of exception to play with Jokic.

Then there is, perhaps, the most important free agency factor of all: golf.

Paul joked that James would be fine as long as there is “indoor and outdoor golf.” Denver, somehow, checks that box.

Winter golf in Colorado is strange, weather-dependent and occasionally interrupted by snow, frost delays and frozen fairways that play like concrete. But between sunny winter days, year-round courses and indoor simulator spots around the city, LeBron’s golf requirement can technically survive the Rockies.

The Nuggets are still a long shot.

But they are not a joke.

If James wants a comfortable landing spot, title contenstion, and a chance to play beside Jokic, the Nuggets have a pitch worth listening to.

And apparently, they already have the communication lines open.
