Mamdani Revises NYPD Staffing Increase Proposal Under DSA Influence

0

Recent reports reveal that New York City’s newly unveiled budget omits a proposed expansion for the police department’s workforce, which had been previously considered.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, stated, “I have been engaging with all agency heads to explore saving strategies, and through discussions with Commissioner Tisch, we have found ways to maintain the NYPD’s authorized staff count at 35,000. This achieves our crime-fighting objectives while rolling out the new initiatives announced earlier this year.”

The mayor’s office received inquiries from News Media on Wednesday.

In a statement to News Media on Wednesday, the NYPD commented, “The city’s financial difficulties are well-known, and the mayor has requested that every department leader look for efficiencies. Commissioner Tisch, who has successfully led three city agencies in her career, has a commendable record of improving efficiency, modernizing operations, and achieving results, even with tight budgets. Currently, the department operates effectively with our budgeted staffing, continuously reducing crime rates monthly. Our current headcount and hiring plan offer the necessary flexibility to maintain this progress throughout the next fiscal year.”

The New York City Democratic Socialists of America had spoken out against the prospect of an increase earlier this month.

Part of a statement posted on the left-wing group’s X profile, which appeared to also have been joined by several other groups, declared, “We are calling on Mayor Mamdani to reverse this proposed expansion of the NYPD and invest the money in community safety programs instead.”

The NYC-DSA reposted City Council member Tiffany Cabán’s statement hailing the news about the budget on Tuesday.

“I am proud too have worked closely with the Mayor and public safety advocates to ensure there was no increase to the NYPD’s headcount in this budget,” Cabán said. “Every dollar we spend on policing and incarceration means money we can’t spend on housing, mental health care, substance use treatment, and economic stability: the proven policies that actually keep our communities healthy and safe.”

“This budget is an important check on the failed policy of broken windows policing and will allow us to build a public safety infrastructure rooted in care, not punishment and incarceration. And we will keep building on it,” she added.

Next Gen NYC‘s prominent figure, Ava Dash, has addressed the whispers swirling around her alleged romantic involvement with Summer House personality Kyle Cooke.

“Over the past couple of months, we’ve grown quite close,” Ava, 26, exclusively shared with Us Weekly on Wednesday, July 1, during a conversation about the upcoming season of Next Gen NYC. “We share the same circle of friends. Several of my closest pals are also his, so we’ve just been enjoying ourselves,” she disclosed.

Ava also remarked on her deepening connections with Summer House regulars Jesse Solomon and Mia Calabrese.

“We’ve had great times together at events like Coachella, and guys like Carl Radke have been incredibly nice. Last weekend at Palm Tree, we all had a blast and have just grown so close, so yeah, it’s all about fun,” she elaborated.

Pressed on whether she wished to address the romance rumors with Kyle, 43, Ava teasingly responded to Us, “What happens in the Hamptons stays in the Hamptons, at least for the time being.”

Amanda Batula’s newfound romance with Summer House costar West Wilson has thrown the entire cast for a loop. “It’s just a lot to take in,” Amanda’s estranged husband, Kyle Cooke, said during a Wednesday, April 1, TikTok interview with Adam Glyn. “It’s not just me, Amanda, West, Ciara [Miller]. It’s, like, our whole friend group. […]

Us spotted Kyle chatting with Ava at the Palm Tree Music Festival in Southampton, New York, on Saturday, June 27. Carl, 41, was also seen mingling at the event, as well as Summer House castmates Bailey Taylor and Levi Sebree.

Rumors about Ava and Kyle come seven months after the latter announced his split from Amanda Batula after more than four years of marriage.

“After much reflection, we have mutually and amicably decided to part ways as a couple. We share this with a heavy heart and kindly ask for your grace and support while we focus on our personal growth and healing,” the former couple shared in January. “It feels ironic to ask for privacy during this time since we’ve always tried to be open and honest about our relationship, but your kindness and respect will go a long way as we try to navigate our next chapter.”

Amanda, 34, has since moved on with Summer House costar West Wilson — a relationship that has caused intense public scrutiny and controversy among the cast, as West, 31, previously dated Amanda’s now-estranged best friend, Ciara Miller. Insiders confirmed to Us last month that neither Amanda nor West will return to Summer House for season 11 following the scandal.

Kyle Cooke Isnt Ready for Anything Serious After Amanda Batula Split, Random Meghan King Kiss

Summer House star Kyle Cooke is single and slowly getting ready to mingle. Following Kyle’s public split from Amanda Batula, a source exclusively shared with Us Weekly that the Bravo star is not ready for anything serious and is just “doing his thing.” At this point, the insider claimed, Kyle, 43, is ready to start […]

As for Kyle, sources exclusively told Us in June that he and Southern Charm’s Salley Carson were “hooking up” and had “a lot of chemistry.” He was also previously spotted kissing Real Housewives of Orange County alum Meghan King in April.

Despite his sightings with fellow Bravolebrities, Kyle insisted to People in June that he’s focusing on himself right now.

“I’m in my own little world at the moment,” he told the outlet. “I’m traveling a lot, so I’m not even really in a position to date in New York. I’m having fun. I will 100 percent be single this summer because I’m looking at my calendar and I’m like, ‘Yeah, there’s no chance for me to even date locally.’”

Before Kyle, Ava was linked to AEW wrestler Tyler “Hook” Senerchia last year. The reality star teased to Us that season 2 of Next Gen NYC will explore “a breakup,” although she did not specify from whom she split.

“I’m hoping that because I was so vulnerable and really showed what I was going through on camera, hopefully people that watch it will be able to relate, not too much, but you know, we’ve all been through a breakup, so it can be hard,” she shared, later teasing that she also goes through “a really big friend transformation” this season.

Next Gen NYC season 2 premiered on June 24. New episodes air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

Senate Stalemate on SAVE Act Leaves House in Limbo, Claims Riley Moore

0

During an appearance on – News Daily, Representative Riley Moore from West Virginia, who is a Republican, announced that the House Republicans are set to integrate the SAVE Act with the National Defense Authorization Act. This strategy reintroduces voter ID legislation to the Senate, following multiple attempts by the House to mandate proof of American citizenship for voting.

Moore expressed his frustration with the Senate’s inaction, suggesting that House lawmakers often find themselves hindered by the Senate’s lack of responsiveness.

“The House has endorsed the Save America Act three times,” Moore noted, highlighting that the SAVE Act, which he referred to as “the initial variant of the voter ID legislation,” is poised for alignment with the National Defense Authorization Act.

Moore outlined that this tactic is facilitated through regulatory procedures, ensuring that once the NDAA is approved by the House, the SAVE Act’s provisions will be seamlessly integrated into the main text of the bill.

Should the Senate reject this inclusion, Moore explained, the subsequent course of action would involve a conference between the House and Senate. This would lead to negotiations regarding the reintroduction of the measure, compelling senators to deliberate on its removal from the National Defense Authorization Act.

The West Virginia Republican said pressure should fall on GOP senators, adding, “We got 53 Republicans in the Senate, their margin is better than ours in the House,” and stating that they “need to vote for this National Defense Authorization Act with the Save Act in it.”

Asked whether Democrats could be persuaded to support some version of the legislation, Moore said, “I don’t think Democrats are going to vote for this,” before pointing to California’s automatic voter registration system as an example of what he views as a problem.

“State of California has automatic voter registration when you go get a driver’s license,” Moore said, noting that driver’s licenses are available to people in the country legally and illegally and asking whether anyone believes there are not noncitizens voting in U.S. elections.

Moore said the federal government should ensure that “U.S. citizens are voting in our elections,” adding that if Republicans cannot stand up for that principle, “That is a sad state of affairs for the Republican Party.”

Moore also drew a distinction between the SAVE Act and the Save America Act, saying the SAVE Act is “primarily dealing with voter ID,” while the Save America Act addresses “voter ID and the mail-in ballot question.”

On mail-in ballots, Moore said Democrats have “eroded trust and confidence in the elections” by allowing vote-counting to continue well after Election Day, asking, “Why would you not have an erosion of trust in the process when it drags on for weeks, if not months?”

Moore pointed to India as an example, saying the country has “over a billion people” and “got their election results in a day,” while questioning why California sometimes cannot produce results “within five, six weeks.”

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Moore said, adding that he lacks trust in results from California because delayed counting contributes to doubts about whether elections are “all above board.”

Moore also criticized Republicans who argue that continued focus on election integrity undermines confidence and turnout, saying, “They are the ones that are hurting Republican enthusiasm and turnout.”

“It goes back to that point that I just made, the erosion of trust in the election cycle,” Moore said, asking why voters would show up “when I don’t even know my vote even matters.”

Moore said election integrity remains a major concern among Republican voters, calling it “a core tenant” of why Republicans “won in 2024” and saying the issue comes up at “any Lincoln Reagan Day dinner in any county in America.”

“This will be a top issue for any Republican that you talk to,” Moore said, adding that the concern spans “moderate to MAGA” Republicans who do not understand “why you can’t get this done.”

Exclusive: Taylor Swift’s Wedding Plans Leaked by Madison Square Garden Insiders

0

Exciting details about what might be the most open secret in the entertainment world are beginning to emerge, as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce get ready to exchange vows.

Three officers stationed at Madison Square Garden in New York City have confirmed to the Daily Mail that this famous venue is set to host a rehearsal dinner Thursday evening, with the wedding taking place the next day.

According to a source, the rehearsal dinner invites specify ‘cocktail attire’ and will be an intimate affair for family and close friends at the cozier Infosys Theater within MSG.

The New York Police Department has given orders for officers to oversee the ‘Taylor Swift wedding rehearsal,’ beginning at 1 PM on Thursday.

Regarding Friday’s festivities in the main arena, the source mentioned that since ‘Travis is not religious and Taylor doesn’t appear to be either,’ a civil ceremony is expected.

Two separate deployments of cops scheduled to guard Friday’s revelries will report to MSG at 2.45pm ET, with a third deployment following 30 minutes later.

That may suggest that 3.15pm is when the busiest or most crucial part of Friday’s ceremony will be taking place.

A total of 139 officers have been assigned to oversee the monster bash, including five lieutenants and 14 sergeants, our sources said. Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend Friday, with celebrations running late into the early hours.

Security posts around MSG have already been erected and special ‘cooling stations’ have been set up to allow cops periods of air-conditioned respite from the ferocious 100F heat that is set to bake Manhattan this holiday weekend.

Around fifteen National Guardsmen were seen outside a VIP entrance to MSG on Wednesday, with members of Swift’s own security team also present.

Truckloads of equipment have been arriving at all hours in recent days. On Tuesday, ‘carpenters’ in t-shirts bearing the logo of Swift’s 2011 Speak Now world tour were photographed driving forklift trucks, sending fans into a frenzy.

Then on Wednesday, two enormous semis were carefully parked to block the view of one entrance to the Garden. Another loading dock has been covered by black tarp.

Meanwhile, boxes of lobster – from Maine – have been wheeled inside, suggesting Swift will generously splurge some of her $2billion fortune to feed her guests. A Krispy Kreme van was also seen in the area, though it should be noted that the donut chain has a store inside nearby Penn Station.

Trees and other shrubbery, as well a sewing machine, have also been hauled into MSG.

It has been suggested that a life-sized ‘castle’ is being built inside the arena, amid speculation Swift is recreating the fairytale setting of her 2008 Love Story music video, which saw the singer transformed as a medieval princess awaiting her suitor.

One workman told the Daily Mail: ‘It’s incredible inside.’

One female cop who spoke to the Daily Mail said, ‘it’s so not like her,’ of the ostentatious wedding.

Indeed, Swift’s exertion of her famous control-freakery over an extremely public venue that can hold 22,000 people – and all over the July 4 weekend – has raised eyebrows in some quarters.

In one particularly farcical moment, exclusive Daily Mail footage captured workers carefully rolling out a plush red carpet outside the venue Tuesday, only for a visibly flustered aide to rush over moments later and order it be removed.

As for the happy couple, the singer’s private jet landed at Morristown Airport in New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon, 30 miles from her $50million Tribeca townhouse.

It is unclear if Swift was on board, but a convoy of six cars arrived to meet the plane.

Kelce, meanwhile, was later filmed out on a solo run near her home.

Public reaction on the streets of New York City has been mixed. ‘Swiftie’ Breanna Spencer, 26, traveled to MSG from her home in Queens at 6.30am on Wednesday to soak up the atmosphere.

‘I’m sure she’s going to turn it [MSG] into something really spectacular,’ Spencer said. ‘I’m still hoping part of this will involve fans as well.’

But some commuters used to battling the arena’s neighboring Penn Station were horrified at the chaos the wedding will no doubt unleash during rush hour the evening before the July 4 holiday weekend.

‘It’s a sh**show,’ one commuter trying to get home to New Jersey told the Daily Mail, adding that the influx of World Cup fans to the city was already bad enough.

‘And on top of this crap we have to deal with this Taylor Swift stuff.

‘I can’t imagine anything worse than being married in the heat in this city on the holiday weekend and amid the World Cup and everything else. What was she thinking?’

Business owners in the highly congested MSG area have also voiced concerns over a potential loss of revenue due to heighted security restrictions. A permit has been filed to close the streets surrounding MSG in Midtown Manhattan from Thursday through midday on Saturday.

An insider told NBC News that 1,100 guests have RSVP’d and are expected to attend Swift’s July 3 wedding.

Sources previously claimed to the Daily Mail that guests – including family and close friends – were required to sign an NDA before receiving any information about the wedding.

For added protection, Swift and Kelce have also individually watermarked each invitation using guests’ first and last names repeatedly across the design, making any leaked invite instantly traceable, say TMZ.

Details of Swift’s wedding dress are, of course, being kept under lock and key. But one recent report had it that the pop star had commissioned at least five different custom gowns to wear over the course of the celebrations.

Designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia of the New York-based brand Monse are though to be included in the running. The duo were recently co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta until their exit in February.

In April, an insider told the Daily Mail that Swift’s wedding dress could be inspired by the gown Elizabeth Taylor wore for her 1950 wedding to Conrad Hilton.

Swift has a song titled Elizabeth Taylor on her most recent album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Lakeland Hosts Active Shooter Training as Parkland Commission Concludes Work

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — This week marked the conclusion of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission’s work, focusing attention once again on safety measures. In synchronicity with this milestone, law enforcement officers and first responders in Lakeland engaged in crucial training exercises designed to prepare them for the unfortunate possibility of an active shooter situation.

“There’s always ways that we can be better, that we can be faster, that we can prevent these things from happening,” emphasized Lakeland Police Sgt. Nicholas Rex, who serves not only his community but also as the president of the Florida SWAT Association. His perspective underscores a commitment to continuous improvement in public safety strategies.

“We stopped and we read the names from each one of those victims to really remind the officers why they’re here, what they’re doing,” Rex explained. This thoughtful gesture served to reinforce the dedication and resolve of officers as they protect their communities against the threat of violence.

In a related development, Florida is set to designate antifa as a terrorist organization, part of a broader legislative effort intended to bolster security and address potential threats at their root. As with many such laws, the aim is to enable law enforcement to act decisively in safeguarding public order.

The Florida SWAT Association organized a three-day active shooter response training program at Florida Southern College, gathering 100 officers from across Florida and other states.

The program included a classroom setting, involving a debrief from an officer who responded to The Covenant School in Nashville and another from an officer who responded to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando.

It also provided hands-on experience in active shooter scenarios in buildings on campus.

“We try to treat everything like it’s a real scenario, obviously,” said Battalion Chief Jerimiah Kendrick, with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. “We go in with very little information. They don’t give us any information hardly at all. Let us make informed decisions on our own, just like we would in real life.”

“They kind of use some lessons learned and some historical references to some of these incidents to try and prepare, to try and make these officers understand what a simulation of that would be like,” Rex said.

Sheriff Grady Judd saw first-hand what an active shooter situation looks like, while serving on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission.

“The most impressive thing that I’ve ever been involved with was the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Commission,” Judd said. “[Pinellas County Sheriff Bob] Gualtieri was the chair and did a remarkable job. We put in hundreds and hundreds of hours. Sheriff Gualtieri put in thousands of hours.”

As of Wednesday, the commission’s task of investigating the shooting and improving school safety came to an end, according to Florida statute.

Judd said the commission held people accountable and recommended changes that became law.

Florida’s Guardian Program is modeled after Judd’s sentinel program, which allows for trained, armed staff on school campuses.

“The Guardian is the sheriff’s office program under a different name. It has made a positive difference in the community. These folks will stand in the gap to protect your children,” Judd said.

Lawmaker also passed a law allowing for Risk Protection Orders, known as the “red flag” law.

Gov. Ron DeSantis opposes the law, as does the National Rifle Association, saying it violates people’s rights.

“They call it the red flag laws. I don’t like that because that falls into this national political narrative. I tell folks, I like the law that’s a cooling off period,” Judd said.

Law enforcement can request a court to temporarily remove a gun from the possession of a person deemed to be a threat to themselves or others.

“Your children are safer in Florida in school today than they’ve ever been. Does that mean there can’t be an active shooter? No, but we’ve reduced the probabilities,” Judd said.

A note from the Lakeland Police Department: it is conducting its own active shooter training on the Florida Southern College campus over the next few weeks so residents can expect what looks like police activity in the area.

Dream Home to Disaster: How One Neighbor Turned a Dream into a Nightmare

When Miles and Melina Armstead purchased their ideal home in Oakland, California, they envisioned a warm neighborhood where children played together, and borrowing a cup of sugar from a neighbor was commonplace.

“It was like everything we hoped for,” Melina reflected in Netflix’s documentary series “Worst Neighbor Ever.” She continued, “But everything changed.”

Shortly after settling into their new home with their four children in October 2017, their dreams turned into a nightmare. Their neighbor, Jamal “JT” Thomas, began an unprovoked campaign of harassment and violence, culminating in the tragic shooting of Miles.

Miles Armstead and Melina Armstead’s Home Becomes a Hellscape

The couple initially felt welcomed by the community and shared a cordial relationship with their neighbors, Patricia and Walter Thomas, and their adult son JT, who lived in a converted garage on the property.

“I would see his mom come and go,” Melina recalled, “and she was always very sweet.”

Everything changed in Aug. 2019, when the Thomases were evicted following their homeowner’s death. While his parents moved out, JT began squatting on the property. When the new owners noticed, they kicked him out and boarded up the home.

“We assumed he was going to leave,” Melina recalled, “but he didn’t.”

The first sign of trouble began on Thanksgiving Day. As the Armsteads sat down to eat, JT banged on their front door and accused their dog of being a nuisance.

“He was very angry and very upset,” said Melina. “We had never seen him that way.”

It was the first of many incidents during which JT allegedly harassed and threatened the Armstead family, according to a lawsuit Melina filed after Miles’ death, alleging that county and city officials failed to curb JT’s behavior.

“It was traumatizing for the kids,” Melina remembered. “It scared the crap out of them.”

She wanted to call the police, but Miles felt compassion for JT. That approach didn’t work.

In Dec. 2019, a newly pregnant Melina was watching TV when was startled by the sound of shattering glass. Large rocks crashed on her couch through the window and flying shards of glass cut her hand.

She called 911, but police lacked enough evidence to arrest JT, and he continued hounding the family.

According to the lawsuit, JT shattered the family’s windows with rocks and bricks and at one point, threatened to burn down their home. One brick he threw nearly hit Miles in the head and damaged his laptop, according to the warrant. The family eventually boarded up their windows to protect themselves, per the lawsuit.

“For some reason,” neighbor Matt Guido said, “JT thought with his whole heart that Miles was harassing him.”

By then, the Armsteads were barely sleeping. Miles stayed up every night, flanked by a baseball bat, while neighbors participated in stakeouts.

The couple obtained a restraining order, but according to Melina, JT continued harassing her family.

One day, Miles came home to find JT outside. He grabbed a baseball bat and confronted JT while neighbors called the police.

“The officers made light of the situation,” noted civil rights attorney Adante Pointer, “and essentially trivialized the trail of terror that this family had been going through.”

JT was arrested for making criminal threats, according to charging documents shown in the docuseries, but while handcuffed, he issued a cold warning.

“Guess what, guys, I‘ll be right back,” he said in body camera footage included in the docuseries. “I’m going to kill him next time.”

Why Did JT Thomas Kill Miles Armstead?

With JT in custody, the family felt relieved, but peace didn’t last. Two days later, he was released and returned to the neighborhood.

The family finally hit a breaking point in 2020. They moved out, but it wouldn’t be their last brush with JT.

On May 1, 2020, Miles left their new apartment to drop paint off at the old house. Neighbor Jose Sanchez was helping with yard work when he heard Miles say, “Look who’s here.”

JT was standing in the middle of the street. According to the warrant, he shot Miles to death.

According to CBS News, the District Attorney said Miles was running away from JT when he was shot, adding that JT had been verbally harassing the family for months.

When fellow neighbor Matt heard the gunshots, he ran outside.

“I saw Miles lying there,” he said. “He wasn’t shaking, he wasn’t breathing, he wasn’t convulsing, wasn’t gasping. He was just still. I knew he was dead.”

When Melina couldn’t reach Miles, she frantically drove to their old home, where she encountered a crime scene.

“There’s a coroner’s van, there’s yellow tarp and there’s caution tape from my house to the stop sign,” she said. “I’m looking at…what’s my husband’s body.”

Seeing the familiar faces of officers she had called so many times in the past only deepened her pain.

“How many of you saw him tormenting us forever, it felt like,” said Melina, “and no one did anything.”

Hours after the shooting, police tracked JT’s location to a hotel by pinging his phone—technology that, according to Pointer, “was available to the police the entire time. But one that they never apparently used in order to stop his reign of terror.”

JT was arrested. He was charged with first-degree murder, along other crimes, according to court records obtained by Oxygen.

Two months later, in July 2020, Melina welcomed daughter Ava.

JT was found guilty of murder in July 2024. Almost a year later, he was sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison.

Melina was later awarded a settlement of $2.4 million. The Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County Probation Department declined to be interviewed by Netflix.

Essential Evil Dead Recap: Everything to Know Ahead of Burn

“Klaatu barada….” If completing this iconic line leaves you stumped, you’re either on par with Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) or it’s time for an “Evil Dead” crash course. The franchise, launched by Sam Raimi in the early 1980s, is gearing up for its latest installment, “Evil Dead Burn,” set to premiere in theaters on July 10. Curious about what lies ahead? Be sure to check out the video linked above.

The “Evil Dead” adventure begins with a seemingly innocuous getaway: a group of friends discover an ancient, flesh-covered book while vacationing at a remote woodland cabin. This fateful find unleashes a demonic entity that systematically possesses them, leaving dismemberment as the sole method of survival. Ash, the lone survivor in the 1981 classic “The Evil Dead,” faces his demonic adversaries once more in the darkly comedic 1987 sequel “Evil Dead II.” The saga continues as Ash is thrust into medieval England in 1993’s “Army of Darkness” and eventually battles evil in modern times in the series “Ash vs Evil Dead,” which aired from 2015 to 2018.

The series received a refreshed take in 2013 with Fede Álvarez’s “Evil Dead.” Deviating from its predecessors, this reboot introduces Mia (portrayed by Jane Levy), an addict whose friends stage an intervention at her family’s rundown cabin, leading to her possession by malevolent forces. Fast forward to 2023, Lee Cronin’s “Evil Dead Rise” sees roadie Beth (Lily Sullivan) reconnecting with her estranged sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her family. An earthquake unearths a mysterious tome beneath their apartment, an ominous find in the “Evil Dead” series.

Evil Dead Burn is another family affair

“Evil Dead Burn” is poised to continue the blend of family drama and survival horror showcased in previous films. This chapter revolves around the unexpected demise of a young man. His widow, Alice (Souheila Yacoub), returns to his familial home to mourn, only to find herself at a secluded lakeside cabin with the bereaved family. The nightmare begins anew with the discovery of the Book of the Dead, leading to family members transforming into Deadites. Can Alice withstand what might be the ultimate nightmare of a family gathering?

There have been some hints that this film will connect to 2013’s “Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead Rise.” The brief glimpses fans get of this world’s version of the Necronomicon in various trailers reflect the illustrations from the book seen in the 2013 film, and there are brief shots in the red band trailer that show off a girl who looks an awful lot like the doomed Jessica (Anna-Maree Thomas) from the ending of “Evil Dead Rise.” She seems to be attacking someone on a lake in a boat. Will Alice be dead by dawn? To find out, go see “Evil Dead Burn” in theaters on July 10, but before you do, be sure to check out our in-depth refresher video above.

West Coast Sheriff’s Bait Bike Operation Captures Dozens of Suspected Thieves in Record Time

0

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) announced Tuesday that an innovative strategy involving bait bikes led to the arrest of more than 34 individuals in Oregon. This initiative aims to combat theft by catching those targeting stolen property.

In mid-April 2026, the operation began by deploying bikes equipped with special tracking devices in various sites around Aloha, a community located just west of Portland. This proactive measure was designed to address the rise in theft cases in the area.

Authorities have hailed the approach as remarkably effective. In less than three months, the bait bikes were stolen multiple times, but deputies were able to swiftly recover them and make numerous arrests. The sheriff’s office confirmed in a statement that each theft of these specially equipped bikes led quickly to apprehensions.

“The bait bike has been repeatedly stolen and, shortly after, recovered by deputies, leading to arrests,” the sheriff’s department reported, highlighting the success of the operation in both preventing theft and bringing perpetrators to justice.

Dozens of bicycles seized by CHP after attempted Bay Bridge takeover in San Francisco

The tactic mirrors another effort along the West Coast, where authorities have confiscated dozens of bikes in California, as reported by the California Highway Patrol – Golden Gate Division.

The program reportedly used traditional mountain bikes equipped with concealed GPS tracking devices and alarms, which were placed in high-traffic areas where thefts were more likely to occur.

Graveyard deputies monitored the bikes during their overnight shifts, allowing them to quickly respond when the bait bikes were taken.

“When the bike is taken, the alarm notifies the deputies monitoring the beacon, and they move in to recover the stolen bike,” the sheriff’s office said.

Nearly three dozen people have been arrested through the operation, with several suspects allegedly found to have outstanding arrest warrants or in possession of controlled substances.

WCSO encouraged bicycle owners to secure their bikes in safe locations and keep records of their serial numbers to assist deputies investigating thefts.

Trump makes lighthearted comment about ‘having a threesome’ with his sons

0

On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump caused a stir with a lighthearted comment about sharing a ‘threesome’ moment with his adult sons. His jest suggested they’d all merit the Congressional Medal of Honor together.

Reflecting on his sons seated nearby, Trump quipped that he might award himself and one of his sons the prestigious medal, humorously musing on which son might receive it. This was said as he noted technical issues with his teleprompters.

These comments occurred during the President’s visit to North Dakota, where he attended the opening ceremony of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Set to welcome visitors officially on Independence Day, the library was the backdrop for Trump’s address.

Amid his discussion on the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt and the iconic duo of Arthur and Douglas MacArthur—both recipients of the nation’s top military honor—Trump shifted the spotlight to his family within the audience.

Trump’s remarks included a nod to genetics, as he praised the historical significance of the Roosevelt and MacArthur families. He then addressed his own sons with a playful, spontaneous narrative.

‘I’ll get one for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia or something. We’ll have a third pair. No, I’m only kidding… this is is dangerous to say because the fake news is up there. They’re all over the place. When I joke, I always, I learned earlier, don’t be sarcastic in politics.’

The remarks drew laughter from the crowd, though his unusual use of the word ‘threesome’ to describe a trio of family medal recipients immediately sparked chatter.

During the ribbon-cutting festivities at the brand-new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, Trump lavished praise on the 26th President, describing him as ‘a man who I have long admired,’ particularly for his monumental achievement in completing the Panama Canal.

The historical reflection quickly veered into a geopolitical warning, however, as Trump fired off an impromptu jab at Beijing.

‘Now China is trying to take over the Panama Canal, and we’re not going to let that happen. OK, and that was not part of the script, because I don’t really have a script,’ Trump told the crowd.

The 47th President also said that he had already discussed the iconic Central American waterway directly with Roosevelt himself – by conversing with the high-tech artificial intelligence hologram of the late leader featured inside the state-of-the-art facility.

Shifting gears to his upcoming Independence Day plans, Trump teased his highly anticipated July 4th address on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Brushing off the sweltering heat wave set to bake the capital, he promised an endurance test.

‘By the way, on July 4th it’s going to be approximately 107 degrees out, and I’m going to go and I’m going to make a really long speech, just to show that I can do anything,’ Trump boasted.

He compared the upcoming summer scorcher to his 80th birthday celebrations just weeks earlier on June 14, noting that a UFC fight hosted on the White House South Lawn went ahead victoriously despite gloomy forecasts threatening rain in the hours leading up to the main event.

The North Dakota trip was already a highly anticipated and historic event for the administration, serving as the inaugural flight of the newly minted Air Force One jet.

The state-of-the-art aircraft, gifted to the United States by Qatar, was rolled out as part of the administration’s ongoing, grand celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.

U.S. Announces Decision Against Extending Crucial Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico

0

The Office of the United States Trade Representative has announced that a critical trade agreement with Mexico and Canada will not be renewed.

The deadline was July 1 for the three nations to choose whether to prolong the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) through 2042. With the Trump administration opting not to extend, the USMCA will now remain active but under annual assessments until 2036, at which point it will expire unless a new extension agreement is made.

Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, stated, “The United States will continue discussions with Mexico and Canada to address the agreement’s weaknesses and our trade imbalances with these nations. However, the agreement will stay in effect until these concerns are resolved or until its eventual termination.”

Focus on the U.S. trade deficit

President Trump formally enacted the USMCA in 2020, superseding the former 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement.

The USMCA was designed to diminish trade barriers between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with the goal of generating American jobs and boosting the manufacturing sector. Among its provisions, the deal imposed stricter regulations on the automotive sector, mandating that 75% of vehicle components be manufactured within North America to bypass import duties.

At an event in Michigan in 2020, Mr. Trump described the pact as the “fairest, most balanced and beneficial trade agreement we have ever signed into law.” But he has since soured on the deal. Speaking to reporters in June, Mr. Trump said the U.S. would “do better as a country” without the agreement.

The USMCA has failed to ease the U.S. trade deficit with Canada and Mexico, a senior Trump administration official told reporters. “We believe that the USMCA does not operate to control the deficit like the president intended,” the person said.

According to the Trade Representative’s office, the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico was nearly $197 billion in 2025, while the trade gap with Canada was over $46 billion.

U.S. officials are scheduled to meet with Mexico represenatatives the week of July 20 for another round of bilateral negotiations. During those talks, the two countries will discuss rules of origin, intellectual property and concerns surrounding Mexico’s compliance with labor obligations, the senior administration official said.

The official did not discuss specific plans to meet with Canada, but said, “We will continue our discussions with our Canadian partners.”

Talks could take years

The Trump administration could decide to withdraw from the USMCA altogether before it expires in 10 years, though that decision will likely depend on how negotiations unfold. Those talks could drag on for years, according to trade experts.

The senior administration official expressed interest in resolving the major sticking points of the trade deal quickly, adding that Mr. Trump could reach an agreement with Mexico and Canada to alter their trade pact before his term expires in 2028.

“The president remains skeptical of this, but I think it’s in the interest of our country to keep negotiating,” the person added.

The impact of a U.S. withdrawal from the USMCA would depend on whether any bilateral trade agreements replaced the pact, according to trade experts.

“Absent bilateral deals, growth would slow in both Canada and Mexico as the tariff exemption, which has kept both countries’ external sectors afloat over the past year, was removed,” economists with investment advisory firm Capital Economics said in a report.

“But given the average tariff rate would only rise to 10%, rather than the much higher rates previously threatened under IEEPA, recessions could be avoided,” they added, referring to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
