Ranch Dressing: Exploring the World Cup’s Unexpected American Condiment Sensation

TAMPA, Fla. (SavorNation) – Ranch dressing, an iconic American flavor, is making quite a splash among international visitors to the U.S., and it’s caught the attention of the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). It seems the creamy condiment has become so popular that the TSA had to release a public service announcement urging travelers not to pack bottles of ranch in their carry-on luggage.

In a playful Instagram post earlier this month, the TSA advised: “If you’re visiting for a very large sporting event & you happen to discover RANCH while you’re here… pls pack it in your CHECKED BAG on the way home.” They concluded the message with a simple, “Thank you.”

Adding a touch of humor, the TSA jested that visitors, when asked to dispose of their ranch bottles, were taking the opportunity to “chug” the dressing instead.

To emphasize the frequency of these occurrences, the agency humorously noted, “Days since the last airport ranch incident: 0.”

For Americans, the love affair with ranch is nothing new. The dressing gained widespread popularity after it won over the taste buds of none other than hungry Alaskan plumbers.

Where was ranch dressing invented?

As the story goes, Steven Henson, the Nebraska native who created ranch dressing, invented the now-ubiquitous condiment after moving to Anchorage in 1949 and taking a job as a plumbing contractor in the Alaskan bush, according to a biography of Henson published in the Santa Barbara Independent. Henson concocted the recipe for what would later be dubbed “ranch” dressing somewhat out of necessity, the outlet reported, after taking on a secondary role in the kitchen while “trying to keep his hungry work crews happy.”

“It’s tough to feed men up in those bush jobs,” Henson once remarked in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, according to an archived article cited by Tedium. “If they don’t like something, they’re as likely to throw it at the cook as they are to walk out cursing. I had to come up with something to keep them happy,” he added, noting that it was during this time in the then-Alaska Territory that ranch dressing “came into being.”

Within just a few years, Henson had reportedly saved up enough money to retire. He and his wife moved to California in the mid-1950s, where they purchased 120 acres of land in the mountains near Santa Barbara (then-called Sweetwater Ranch, according to the Independent) and rechristened it as “Hidden Valley Ranch.”

“I wouldn’t call it a ranch, in reality,” remembered Alan Barker, a former employee at Hidden Valley Ranch who spoke with CBS Sunday Morning in 2021. “There were no animals, there were no crops. It was a motel in the mountains.”

By most accounts, Henson’s “ranch” didn’t attract too many guests. But the ones who did visit reportedly raved about the dressing at the on-site restaurant, with some “asking Steve for jars of his ranch dressing to enjoy at home with their friends and family,” according to the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing brand’s own record.

“From my memory, it was buttermilk, Miracle Whip, some spices and I think some chopped-up shallots — and then, the ingredient that was kept secret: pure MSG,” Barker, the former Hidden Valley Ranch-hand, told CBS News. (Barker also claimed in an earlier interview with the L.A. Times that the dressing called for “buttermilk and mayonnaise,” making no mention of Miracle Whip specifically. Henson, meanwhile, had long before admitted to using MSG in the ranch packets he would eventually sell.)

Henson soon started focusing more on the dressing than the ranch. He provided it to a local restaurant (the still-operating Cold Spring Tavern) and began producing dry seasoning packets to sell off-site, and later through the mail. Customers needed only to mix the contents of the packets with buttermilk and mayonnaise to have their own Hidden Valley Ranch dressing at home.

Henson’s business took off by the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, after which the Clorox Company offered Henson $8 million for the whole operation, the Santa Barbara Independent reported. In the ‘80s, Clorox ultimately developed a shelf-stable bottled version of Hidden Valley Ranch — rather than just a dry mix — that could be shipped to retail outlets.

Henson himself sold the physical Hidden Valley Ranch in 1973, but maintained properties in Palm Springs, California, and Sparks, Nevada. He passed away in Reno in 2007, per an obituary in the Reno-Gazette Journal, which means he sadly didn’t live to see the invention of kegged ranch dressing, or ranch dressing ice cream.

Even still, Henson once remarked to the L.A. Times that he never could have imagined the trajectory his life would take after mixing up a batch of dressing in the Alaskan bush. It’s also highly likely he could have predicted his creation would find a new audience among World Cup fanatics decades later.

“I love ranch,” one German soccer fan remarked in a viral video published last week. “I taste it here, and it’s delicious. And I take two bottles with [me] home.”

Behind the Scenes of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Plans at MSG

It seems preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.

Photographs captured on Monday for the Daily Mail depict a procession of large trucks arriving at the celebrated venue, known as the home of the New York Knicks and Rangers, indicating the beginning phases of the event setup.

Although the renowned musician and her football star fiancé, both 36, have yet to officially announce their wedding venue, insider reports suggest the ceremony is slated to occur at the Garden over the July 3 weekend. The visible influx of equipment supports these rumors.

The Daily Mail has reached out for a comment from Swift’s spokesperson to confirm the details.

Numerous semi-trailer trucks were observed parked outside the arena, with their open doors revealing a glimpse of what they contained inside.

The entire loading area had been surrounded by metal security barriers, along with ‘No Parking’ signs stating that the area around the arena was off-limits from June 20 to July 4.

Some appeared to be loaded with crates and what looked like racks of electronics, possibly for a musical performance.

There were also some visible hints that the trucks were related to Swift’s upcoming nuptials, including a sign on equipment being unloaded that read, ‘Return to Nashville.’

The trucks appeared to have signs taped above the doors to the trailers reading ‘TAIT 1 – AUD DECK’ and ‘TAIT 2 – VER.’

‘TAIT 2’ appears to refer to a stage equipment transportation system that was developed by TAIT Towers.

According to the manufacturer, the units are modified shipping containers that house heavy audio, lighting, and stage automation equipment.

The containers are fully functional and feature built-in lifts that allow the enormous speakers and mechanical equipment to be directly lifted into a performance-ready configuration.

The system has been used in major tours, including Swift’s blockbuster Eras Tour.

They proved to be particularly beneficial for her shows, as the low-key shipping containers could save time and space when it came to set-up, and they also helped to disguise their true purpose.

In December, she revealed in an interview with Stephen Colbert that the tune – one of only a handful of Folklore songs that she co-wrote with Jack Antonoff – holds a special place in her heart, as she considers it one of the best songs she has written to date.

While some vendors didn’t seem to have any issue with making their connection to Swift’s apparent nuptials public, some appeared to have their business names covered up or blacked out for extra secrecy.

Ahead of the highly anticipated event, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding planner – who pulled off their secret nuptials in 1996 – weighed in on the rumors that Swift and Kelce are to be married soon.

‘I don’t think it’s gonna be at MSG. I don’t,’ RoseMarie Terenzio predicted on CBS Mornings on Monday. ‘I could see her doing something for her fans at MSG,’

Terenzio stated, ‘She has such an emotional connection to her fans, and she understands that relationship so well that I think there’ll be something for the fans.’

Swift and Kelce have not confirmed a wedding date or venue, and and the pop star usually announces any public events.

Terenzio guessed that Swift and Kelce could be married already.

‘I think it’s amazing. People are so invested in those two and I think they’re really invested in them having their moment, I really do,’ the Fairy Tale Interrupted author emphasized.

She mused, ‘Their effervescence as a couple – they’re always cheering each other on. I just think people are invested in giving them a beautiful wedding.’

Referencing her experience helming Kennedy and Bessette’s surprise ceremony, the public relations expert said the trick is to only tell ‘people you know very well.’

She also suggested the use of decoys to throw off sleuths, and refraining from sending texts, emails, or any other written correspondence.

She advised that all communications be done ‘by phone or in person.’

Terenzio shared that when she orchestrated the Kennedy wedding, ‘We left itineraries for Ireland around the office.’

Back in 1996, Terenzio pulled off the impossible with Kennedy Jr and Bessette managing to evade press and marry undetected on Cumberland Island in Georgia.

Media outlets missed the marriage, which took place in a chapel without electricity on the secluded, undeveloped barrier island. Only 40 guests were present. The feat is largely proclaimed as one of the world’s most successful secret weddings.

Terenzio said she’s confident the hitmaker and Kansas City Chiefs sensation will manage to keep their wedding details under wraps.

‘I think those two could do it, and especially her,’ she added. ‘She just has such savvy about everything that she does and I think she could do it.’

A source told NBC News that 1,100 guests have RSVP’d and are expected to attend Swift’s July 3 wedding, and that they were required to sign an NDA before receiving electronic invites.

It’s been reported that wedding guests will not know the address until the morning of the event.

In early June, an insider exclusively told the Daily Mail that the couple decided to ’embrace the spectacle’ of a giant wedding.

Business owners in the highly congested MSG area later voiced concerns over a potential loss of revenue and security accommodations.

According to TMZ, less than one month before the expected event, local bars and restaurants claimed they had yet to receive details regarding the major event that is sure to have an impact on their establishments.

Tom Kean Jr.’s Comeback: Ending His Mysterious Absence from Congress

TRENTON, N.J. – Tom Kean Jr., a New Jersey Republican absent from Congress for nearly four months, is set to make a public reappearance. This follows a period of speculation surrounding the unspecified medical issue he claims has kept him away from Washington.

At 57, Kean is in his second term as a congressman and is part of a notable New Jersey political family. He serves a critical district that includes the Bedminster golf club owned by former President Donald Trump. This year, he has missed over 100 congressional votes and has been absent from public view in both Washington and his district, despite securing the Republican nomination for another term.

Kean’s spokesperson assured the public that the congressman would return to his duties on Tuesday and provide transparency regarding his absence. Last week, when approached by a New York Times reporter at his home, Kean declined an interview but indicated he would speak at a later date.

The uncertainty surrounding Kean’s disappearance has stirred political repercussions, especially in his competitive district and with the GOP’s slim majority in the House. His team states he is seeking reelection and will be contesting against Democratic candidate Rebecca Bennett, a past Navy helicopter pilot, in November’s high-stakes race in New Jersey.

Democrats have zeroed in on this district as a key target, given its history of changing party hands in recent midterm elections. Kean secured victory in 2022 by overcoming Democrat Tom Malinowski, who had previously unseated Republican Leonard Lance in 2018.

Kean’s last vote was months ago

Kean last voted in the House on March 5, but his absence wasn’t explained.

In April, his social media account said he had been dealing with a personal medical issue and his doctors expected him to recover.

Kean’s absence has also complicated matters for House Republican leaders, who are struggling every day to pass bills with their razor-thin majority, 218-212. Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders repeatedly told reporters they were in touch with Kean, but said he would have to address the circumstances himself.

Trump has endorsed Kean’s reelection, without mentioning his absence.

Kean comes from a long line of public servants, stretching 250 years to the country’s founding when one of his ancestors became New Jersey’s first leader since independence.

His great-grandfather was a senator, his grandfather was a congressman and his father is the former two-term governor, Tom Kean Sr.

Law Enforcement Questions New Demand Letter in Nancy Guthrie Case

0

Questions have surfaced around a newly surfaced note in the case of Nancy Guthrie, leaving law enforcement officials skeptical of its legitimacy.

During an appearance on the June 26 episode of the Buckmaster Show on Arizona’s radio station KVOI AM 1030, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared his insights into the situation.

“I think the FBI has done a number of arrests for false or fake ransom notes,” Nanos remarked. “It’s a shame that happens, but I think we’re looking at one of those today.”

These comments were made in light of a report by TMZ, which revealed that an unidentified person sent a note claiming possession of a video purportedly showing the “main” suspect with Nancy on the last day she was seen. This alleged footage is supposedly on a phone stored in a “secure location.”

Oxygen has contacted the Pima County Sheriff’s department for further comments on this development.

When Did Nancy Guthrie Disappear?

Nancy was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31, in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood of her Tucson, Ariz. home. She was reported missing on Feb. 1 by her family.

On May 9, three months after her disappearance, the Tucson Police Department confirmed that a human bone had been found seven miles from her residence.

But, the finding was “not criminal in nature,” a spokesperson for the police told People, noting that it was a “prehistoric anthropological investigation.”

A Previous Letter To Media Said Nancy Guthrie Is Dead

Following the February disappearance of Nancy, a second letter to media outlets claimed that the 84-year-old has died, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The note’s existence was known, but the contents had not been made public. The note also did not contain an apology or request for payment for the release of her body, per the outlet.

Investigators involved in the case had examined two notes sent to media outlets and confirmed they are “potentially credible,” NBC News reported. The notes had been sent to NBC News affiliate KOLD news director Jessica Bobula.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 “for information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.”

Justice Served: Stepdad Sentenced in Shocking Case of 11-Year-Old’s Home Birth

Inset: Dustin J. Walker (Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office). Background: The residence where Walker’s 11-year-old stepdaughter gave birth in 2025 (KJRH).

An Oklahoma man has been sentenced to a life term in prison after subjecting his 11-year-old stepdaughter to give birth at home without any medical assistance.

Dustin Joel Walker, aged 35, was handed a life sentence along with an additional 42 years this past Monday, according to court documentation. Muskogee County District Judge Timothy King mandated that Walker complete the 42-year sentence—stemming from six counts of child neglect—before commencing the life sentence for sexually abusing a child under 12 years old.

Should Walker ever be granted parole, he will face a three-year period of supervised release. Furthermore, he is required to register as a sex offender and is prohibited from contacting the victims.

Previously reported by Law&Crime, Walker confessed in March to all seven charges against him. He entered what is known as a “blind plea,” meaning there was no prearranged deal with prosecutors, leaving his sentencing completely at the judge’s discretion.

The categories of crimes to which he pleaded also require that Walker complete at least 85% of his prison sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson said DNA testing showed a “99% certainty” that Walker is the infant’s father and expressed hope that the plea would lead to significant prison time, according to a report from Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH. The victim’s biological mother, Cherie Walker, and her maternal grandmother, Michelle Justus, have also been arrested and face charges in connection with the alleged abuse the child endured.

Authorities say the child gave birth to a full-term baby inside the home without ever receiving prenatal care or seeing a doctor during the pregnancy. Investigators allege Walker repeatedly abused the child, resulting in the pregnancy, while the adults in the home failed to provide basic care, supervision, or medical attention. Court records indicated the girl had not seen a doctor in more than a year prior to giving birth.

In an interview with Tulsa-based CBS affiliate KOTV, Hutson described the victim as “rather petite,” noting the newborn was a normal-sized infant, while also pushing back on claims from the adults that they were unaware of the pregnancy.

“This child is traumatized. She’s been through a horrific ordeal,” the prosecutor said. “I mean, not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life.”

Hutson also indicated the victim had been pulled out of school, which limited opportunities for teachers or medical professionals to spot the abuse and intervene.

“The child had been out of school for a period of time, and it is my understanding that children may have been homeschooled,” Hutson said.

Cherie Walker and Michelle Justus have both denied knowing the child was pregnant.

“I just want people to know, we did not know this was happening. None of us,” Justus previously told Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH. “They’ve made my daughter and my son-in-law a monster. They are not. They love those children. They love them.”

Justus also previously accused a 12-year-old neighborhood boy of impregnating her grandchild.

Cherie Walker is set to go on trial on July 13.

Top 5 Heart-Wrenching Twilight Zone Episodes You Can’t Miss

0

Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone” not only foresaw aspects of the future but also perfected the art of jaw-dropping twist endings. Many of its classic episodes remain impactful today, with their sharp moral insights often cloaked in a science fiction guise. Yet, there’s an often-overlooked element that is intrinsic to the fabric of “The Twilight Zone”: it can be profoundly melancholic when it chooses to be.

A defining trait of “The Twilight Zone” is the unfortunate and often cruel destinies awaiting its characters. Many meet grim endings, while those who survive don’t escape unscathed. With this in mind, we delve into the five most heart-wrenching episodes of the series, evaluated by their emotional impact on the audience.

5. The Lonely (Season 1, Episode 7)

Several episodes from “The Twilight Zone” appear to have predicted future events, including the Season 1 standout, “The Lonely,” showcasing Rod Serling’s knack for foresight. This somber tale revolves around James A. Corry (played by Jack Warden), a convict sentenced to isolated confinement on a distant asteroid. Amidst his desolation, Corry finds an unlikely ally in Captain Allenby (John Dehner) of the supply ship, who believes in his innocence and provides him with Alicia (Jean Marsh), a robot companion to ease his solitude.

In an eerily prophetic twist that echoes our era of AI companionship, Corry becomes emotionally attached to Alicia, who exhibits feelings and a personality mirroring his own, eventually falling in love with her. But the plot takes a fateful turn when Corry learns that he has been exonerated, yet due to the limited capacity of the ship, cannot take Alicia along. Allenby, perceiving Corry’s distress as attachment to a mere machine, destroys Alicia, revealing the mechanics beneath her facade, as she utters her last words mechanically.

Thus, “The Lonely” wraps up with a heart-wrenching spin on the series’ characteristic irony. While Corry regains his liberty, he also loses a being he had come to cherish, leaving him in shock. As he grapples with his freedom, he’s haunted by the uncertainty of whether Alicia’s affection was real or merely the workings of a sophisticated automaton designed to emulate companionship.

4. A Stop at Willoughby (Season 1, Episode 30)

“A Stop at Willoughby” is another “The Twilight Zone” Season 1 episode that makes the most of its unconventional premise by telling a story that’s genuinely touching. Here, a well-meaning but overwhelmed ad executive called Gart Williams (James Daly) sees his personal and professional life slowly unravel as he discovers he’s not cut out for the modern capitalist world.

Napping on a train to work, Williams dreams of a station called Willoughby — a peaceful-looking town that seems to exist in the late 19th century. The location appears to only exist in his mind, and when his life is its most dire, Williams chooses to escape his crumbling life by finally disembarking at the Willoughby station. Here, everyone knows him and welcomes him with open arms. Finally, he truly fits in.

Here’s where the customary “The Twilight Zone” twist kicks in with a vengeance. Willoughby is actually heaven, or at least Williams’ particular version of the great beyond. The train was moving at full speed when he stepped out, the real-world “Willoughsby” is the name of a funeral home operator, and the strong implication is that we’ve been watching the final days of a desperate man who’s beckoned by death. Granted, Williams does seem pleased with his new lease in (after)life, but this still means that “A Stop at Willoughsby” is about a perfectly nice man succumbing to the pressures of the world around him.

3. Five Characters in Search of an Exit (Season 3, Episode 14)

“Five Characters in Search of an Exit” is a Season 3 Christmas episode that tells us in no uncertain terms that things are not all right for its characters. Here, five different people with neither names nor memories find themselves in an odd, cylindrical pit that seems impossible to escape.

It all seems like “The Twilight Zone” is setting us up for some sort of major alien-themed revelation, but the truth is sadder and stranger. As the Major (William Windom) finally escapes and flops out of the cylinder, he lands unmoving onto the snowy street outside. We discover that the five are all toys, and their “prison” is a Christmas donation barrel for a girls’ orphanage. This means they were unwanted surplus to their former owners, and have been effectively abandoned.

With no way to change or escape the situation, the characters are stuck in the barrel as they wait for the great unknown. Really, the only reason “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” isn’t higher on this list is the fact that the toys will all eventually head for the Viewpark Girl’s Home orphanage, where happier times may potentially await. Still, such visions of the future exist outside the confines of the episode itself, which ends with the Ballet Dancer (Susan Harrison) quietly weeping over the quintet’s forsaken predicament.

2. Death Ship (Season 4, Episode 6)

Few things are sadder than a tragic eternity of yearning. This is the outcome of “The Twilight Zone” Season 4 episode “Death Ship,” where the three-man crew of Space Cruiser E-89 seems to be in a time loop that predicts their fatal crash on the strange planet they’re exploring. Captain Ross (Jack Klugman) decides that they will stay on the planet while figuring out the situation. Mason (Ross Martin) and Carter (Fred Beir) disagree with this given their dwindling resources, but have to follow their superior. Soon, vivid visions of dead loved ones ensue. The captain develops theories about aliens who are influencing their minds, and insists that they continue to investigate.

As Ross is eventually proven to be clueless, we find that the crew has been dead all along, and what we’re watching is their ghosts repeating the events that led to their deaths. The problem is that only Mason and Carter accept this and want to move beyond the veil to be with their dead family members. The captain continues to outrank them even in death, and demands they continue the mission until they figure out what’s “really” going on. This locks the trio into a vicious limbo that the closing narration suggests might continue forever. In other words, “Death Ship” is an episode about one man’s bad decisions dooming not just himself — but tragically, two other wholly innocent men who are entirely aware of their eternal predicament.

1. In Praise of Pip (Season 5, Episode 1)

“In Praise of Pip” isn’t one of Looper’s 30 best episodes of “The Twilight Zone,” but the sadness in this Season 5 episode is constant and comes in two flavors: The usual desperate fare, and the kind of “happy tears” sadness that’s rarely the show’s bread and butter. Here, Max Phillips (Jack Klugman again) is a bookmaker who helps out the desperate George Reynold (Russell Horton), whom he’s goaded into taking a large losing bet. This sends Max and George on a collision course with Max’s boss (S. John Launer).

During their confrontation, Max learns that his soldier son, Pip (Robert Diamond), has been mortally injured in Vietnam. Overwhelmed by the guilt of a neglectful father, he fights and kills his boss and a thug, thus saving George. Wounded and fleeing, Max experiences a vision of young Pip (Bill Mumy) and relives memories of their happiest times in an amusement park. In the end, Max prays for a chance to give his life to ensure his son’s survival — and dies.

This meditation on wasted lives, bad choices, and back-against-the-wall redemption changes gears when we find that Pip not only survives but remembers his father as a positive influence, despite Max’s self-perceived awfulness. While this confirms that Max indeed managed to do good in the world, it’s crushing to realize that his last-minute repentance doesn’t mean the world will remember him as a good man, and that he won’t ever know how much Pip admires him.

Lauryn Hill’s Kids Unite for Star-Studded Tribute at BET’s Living Legend Icon Award Ceremony

It was a night of musical tribute and celebration at the 2026 BET Awards, where Ms. Lauryn Hill was celebrated with the first-ever Living Legend Icon Award. The ceremony honored her significant contributions to music with an enthralling performance that included three of her children alongside renowned artists such as Queen Latifah, Common, Doechii, and Lizzo.

The homage began with an electrifying performance by Tanya Trotter of The War and Treaty, who captivated the audience with a gospel piece from the film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. This film marked an early moment in Hill’s career, long before her rise to fame with The Fugees.

As the night unfolded, it was Hill’s children who continued the tribute. Her daughter, Selah Marley, delivered a heartfelt rendition of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” YG Marley followed, infusing passion into “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” while Zion Marley offered a stirring, reggae-inspired performance of “To Zion,” a deeply personal song from Hill’s iconic 1998 album, written to celebrate his birth.

While accepting the award, Hill reflected on the love that has shaped both her life and her music.

“I do this because I love y’all,” she said. “I do this because I want you to have everything that I experienced, right? I had wonderful parents who loved on me, poured into me and protected me. And once I realized that not everybody got to have that experience, I felt like it was my duty, my responsibility to share as much love, and to pour into as much people as I possibly could. And music was a way for me to do that.”

Hill also spoke about the importance of representing her community.

“I have always cared about the expression of and the representation of the dignity of our people,” she said. “Sometimes we’re put in positions to say things that aren’t always comfortable. We understand that people will understand later.”

“Everybody may not know it, but I fight for y’all,” Hill continued. “And fighting for y’all is me fighting for myself. It’s me fighting for my children, it’s me fighting for my parents, it’s me fighting for my grandparents. It’s me fighting for my community.”

Before concluding her speech, Hill also recognized two of her other children, John and Sara Marley, who were in the audience. She noted that John was celebrating his 23rd birthday, while Sara is preparing to attend the University of Miami. Hill shares five children with former partner Rohan Marley and son Micah Hill from another relationship.

Carter County Commission Approves Budget Excluding Senior Center Funding

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — In a recent session, Carter County officials passed a budget that excludes financial support for the Elizabethton Senior Center and various community organizations. However, Mayor Patty Woodby suggested there is potential for this funding to be reinstated soon.

The decision came after Monday’s meeting, where the budget was approved with a significant majority in a 16–2 vote.

Supporters of the senior center funding shared heartfelt testimonies, highlighting how the center became a vital resource after Hurricane Helene devastated their homes.

Mayor Woodby explained that the county’s ongoing recovery efforts from the hurricane have forced officials to confront difficult financial choices.

“Raising taxes on our citizens is not an option right now,” Woodby remarked. “Unfortunately, this resulted in the difficult decision to reduce funding for some agencies.”

Senior Center Executive Director Brittany Shell expressed her disappointment with the decision.

“Over the last month, I have felt a significant amount of frustration, heartbreak, anger, disappointment, not because of the budget line, but because I believe Carter County can do better than this,” Shell said.

Woodby said the affected organizations may come back and make their funding requests again in a couple of months for reconsideration.

“So I feel confident that our Budget Committee and our county commission will approve those requests at that time,” she said.

Woodby said she would advocate for those organizations.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t advocate also for those outside agencies that are cut. They provide tremendous services to our community,” Woodby said.

Unlock the Secrets to Viewing June’s Spectacular Strawberry Moon

(NewsNation) — Stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere are in for a celestial treat as the Strawberry Moon graces the sky this Monday, June 29. This year’s spectacle is set to trace an unusually low trajectory, offering a unique viewing experience.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the moon will reach its fullest and brightest point at 7:56 p.m. ET. Unlike the full moons of winter that shine high above, this summer moon will dance along the southern horizon. Rising from the southeast, it will stay low in the sky throughout the night before setting in the southwest.

The reason for the moon hanging so low is due to its tilted orbit. We’re still experiencing the effects of a “major lunar standstill” that peaked in 2024 and 2025. The cycle repeats about every 19 years, so we won’t see it dip that low again until 2043, according to Live Science.

No, the Strawberry Moon won’t be red or pink

Despite its name, June’s Strawberry full moons aren’t called that due to their color or appearance. Native American Algonquian tribes, along with the Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota peoples, used the name to mark the time when wild strawberries would ripen, according to the Almanac.

Because the moon will be so low and best viewed right at dusk, it could appear reddish-orange or pink in hue for a short time due to how its light passes through the atmosphere when its low in the horizon.

For the best view, Space recommends finding a clear space with an unobstructed view of the low southeast sky.

Yankees Face Comprehensive Struggles as All Aspects of the Team Underperform

The New York Yankees seem to have lost their knack for key aspects of the game: hitting, pitching, and fielding.

These are essentially the bread and butter of baseball, and their absence is leaving fans disappointed and yearning for better days. On a slightly brighter note, the team competes in the American League, which, some might say, is not particularly strong at the moment.

In a league where only a handful of teams manage to keep their win-loss record above .500 consistently, the Yankees’ issues are somewhat masked. While this has seen their slide from the top of the AL East standings, they’re not yet in immediate peril overall. Nevertheless, the struggles faced by rival teams can only obscure their problems to a certain extent. The Yankees are not just facing losses—having dropped five in a row and nine out of their last 12—they’re doing it with noticeable flaws in every department.

In their 7-3 defeat against the Tigers on Monday, the scoreline doesn’t quite capture the extent of their woes, which were compounded by injuries. A notable mishap involved Jasson Domínguez, whose defensive skills leave much room for improvement. During an attempt to catch a pop-up in the fourth inning, Domínguez collided with Jazz Chisholm Jr., hitting him in the jaw with an elbow. Domínguez claimed he had called for the ball, but Chisholm, who was moving back from the infield, apparently didn’t hear him. As a result, Chisholm had to leave the game and is undergoing concussion protocol.
