The ultra-slim look is once again dominating fashion and celebrity culture, bringing renewed attention to sharply defined abs. The trend is no longer limited to young fitness influencers, with stars in their 50s and 60s now displaying highly sculpted stomachs on red carpets and social media.

Trinny Woodall, 62, Nicole Kidman, 59, and Amanda Holden, 55, are among the celebrities associated with the increasingly popular ‘11-line’ abs look.

The term refers to two distinct vertical lines running down either side of the abdomen, creating the appearance of a lean, toned midsection that has quickly become a sought-after body ideal.

But fitness professionals warn that pursuing this defined stomach at all costs may encourage excessive exercise, injury, disordered eating, mental health struggles and weakened bones.

Personal trainer Edwina Jenner told the Daily Mail that visible abdominal muscles are not automatically a cause for concern.

“There is nothing inherently dangerous about having visible abdominal definition,” she said. “The concern begins when achieving those lines involves restrictive eating, extreme or compulsive workouts, or the belief that your body is never quite good enough. A visible six-pack or 11-line stomach is not proof of overall health.

“Celebrities often have access to expensive trainers, private gyms, nutrition experts, personal chefs and the time needed to focus heavily on their appearance. For many of them, looking a certain way is also part of their profession.”

She continued: “This is not an ordinary reality for most women, yet these highly demanding standards appear constantly across social media and in celebrity coverage.

“People should also remember that lighting, camera angles, posing and flexing can all make abdominal definition appear much more dramatic in photographs.”

For anyone attempting to recreate a celebrity physique, Jenner said the physical and psychological consequences can be considerable.

“Failing to eat enough to fuel exercise and daily life can result in exhaustion, poor concentration and inadequate recovery between sessions, increasing the risk of injury,” she said.

“Over a longer period, consistently under-fuelling the body can weaken bones and make it more difficult to preserve muscle mass.

“Trying to achieve a particular look may also create increasingly strict rules around food and exercise, heighten fears about gaining weight and lead to an unhealthy fixation on eating and body shape.”

“For some women, these behaviours can become socially isolating and may contribute to the development of an eating disorder,” she added.

“Giving a body feature a memorable label can make it easier to market as the next fitness target. ‘11-line abs’ sounds like something that can be achieved through one specific programme, but bodies are individual and cannot be reduced to a single workout formula.”

A rise in GLP-1 use has seen skinny figures soar, however abs operate in a tricky middle space.

As a show of visible muscle, some might assume they’re a picture of physical health and strength, but the reality is many women achieve them by restricting calories.

Edwina said: ‘Lower body fat generally makes abdominal definition more visible. Around 18 per cent is sometimes suggested as a rough guide for women, but that is not a reliable cut-off, as it’s affected by genetics.’

PwC estimates that one in eight Brits will be taking GLP-1s by 2027, with the likes of Kelly Osbourne, Serena Williams and James Corden already admitting to use.

Edwina said: ‘I think the rise of GLP-1 medications has contributed to the renewed emphasis on extreme thinness in celebrity culture.

‘These medications absolutely have their place. My concern is when the ambition shifts from improving health to becoming as thin as possible.

‘Women need to understand that weight loss can include muscle loss as well as fat loss. Being thinner is not the same as being healthier.’

Although there’s no suggestion any of the celebs named in this piece take Ozempic or Mounjaro, they will surely feel the pressure of being pictured alongside stars who do.

Edwina, who predominantly works with women aged 40 to 60, also revealed the particular challenges these stars face given their age.

She said: ‘As oestrogen levels fall during perimenopause and after menopause, women tend to store more fat around their middle, rather than their hips and bottom. This means your waistline can change even without a significant increase in your weight.

‘Alongside this, we lose muscle as we age, which affects our metabolic health and reduces our daily energy levels.

‘Combined with changes in sleep, eating habits, stress and lower activity levels, this can make it easier to gain fat.

‘That can make visible abdominal definition harder to achieve, but it does not mean women cannot build muscle or improve their fitness. The answer is not just to eat less and do more ab exercises.

‘My advice remains the same for midlife women. You can have a strong, capable core without starving yourself or seeing a single line.’

She concluded: ‘It’s fantastic and encouraging to see women in midlife celebrated for their strength and activity.

‘My concern is when that becomes another appearance standard women feel obliged to meet.

‘We should be widening the picture of what a fit, strong woman can look like, rather than giving her another body part to scrutinise.’

The stars pictured in this piece all work hard at their physiques.

Amanda Holden, for example, has admitted to eating just two meals a day, always skipping lunch.

And while she never deprives herself of an Aperol Spritz or a cheese sandwich, she previously told TV Times: ‘The deal I struck with myself was I have to run for my rosé in the summer and run for my red wine in winter.’

Actress Ali Larter, 50, wakes up at 4.30am to work out before her two kids wake and admits she ‘eats very clean, but I eat’.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 54, famously skips breakfast. She sparked fury in 2023 by admitting she eats bone broth for lunch, followed by an hour-long Pilates workout, and then a vegetable-heavy Paleo dinner (that’s no wheat, dairy or processed carbs).

Trinny Woodall, who showed off her amazing bikini body on a trip to India in March, swears by strength training or yoga five days-a-week.

Halle Berry, now 60, first unveiled her six-pack on Instagram in 2019. She said at the time that she had ‘smashed’ her goal of getting ‘ripped abs’.

She admitted it was hard work and not ‘easy’, adding ‘but that pay off? Worth every damn second’.

Amazingly, she has managed to maintain her figure into her 60s. In 2025, she admitted she ‘used to do a lot of cardio’ but had swapped running for weight training, after years of avoiding it in case it made her ‘muscly’.

Davina McCall, 59, wakes at 6.15am every day to work out on an empty stomach, before taking her dog, Bo, on a long walk wearing weighted gloves.

Charlize Theron, 51, lives an alcohol-free lifestyle and has juice and green salads ‘every day’. She credits Pilates for her ‘changed body’.

She once told Harper’s Bazaar Australia: ‘I’m always calculating my activity. If I haven’t been moving a lot, I can’t eat a lot.’

Keri Russell, star of Netflix’s The Diplomat, learnt Krav Maga, a self-defence system developed for the Israel Defence Forces for a previous acting role and still does combat-style workouts with her PT to this day.

A California dog owner has avoided a possible six-year prison sentence after registering her Boxer to vote, but her canine election partner is still facing a public reckoning.

The dog’s image will appear on anti-voter-fraud billboards throughout Orange County.

Laura Lee Yourex, 64, of Costa Mesa, had her case dismissed Monday after fulfilling a plea agreement that required her to pay $1,500 for four billboards featuring her late dog, Maya Jean, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

The billboards along the 55 and 22 freeways deliver a blunt warning: “Don’t be a dog. Voter Fraud is a Crime. If you can’t legally vote, don’t vote. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute.”

Yourex was charged with five felonies in September 2025 after registering Maya Jean to vote and submitting ballots in the dog’s name in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary.

Her potential legal jeopardy was substantially reduced under a plea deal. Prosecutors dismissed four felony counts after Yourex admitted to one misdemeanor charge of knowingly registering a nonexistent person as a voter.

She pleaded guilty on April 10, and the case was dismissed Oct. 13 after she completed the terms of the agreement.

The unusual voter-fraud case also left behind a trail of social media evidence. In January 2022, Yourex posted a photograph of Maya Jean wearing an “I voted” sticker while posing with a ballot.

In October 2024, she posted a picture of the dog’s identification tag beside another mail-in ballot, writing, “maya is still getting her ballot,” despite the fact that Maya Jean had already died.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters contacted prosecutors after Yourex disclosed that she had registered her dog and cast ballots under the animal’s name. That report prompted an investigation and ultimately led to the felony charges.

Yourex also detailed the conduct in a plea agreement she signed under penalty of perjury.

“On or about 5/7/20, in Orange County, I did willfully and unlawfully cause an animal, to wit: a dog, to be registered as a voter, knowing that animal was not entitled to registration as a nonexistent person, and mailed and delivered that affidavit to a county elections official.”

Maya Jean’s ballot was counted in the 2021 recall election, which Gov. Gavin Newsom survived. The dog’s ballot in the 2022 primary, however, was challenged and rejected.

The dog’s face will now be used as a voter-fraud warning through the Nov. 3 election, as California voters prepare to consider new requirements for voter identification.

Police and FBI investigators have returned to excavate the backyard of a Philadelphia home as part of a widening investigation into a possible serial killer. Previous searches of the property uncovered apparent “snuff” films, urns containing ash and evidence potentially connected to at least seven missing women.

Images from the scene show an excavator operating in the backyard as investigators in protective gear continued working at the property this week. Tents have been erected in the front and back yards, while tarps cover sections of the lawn. Personnel have been seen wearing face masks, hazmat suits, rubber gloves, protective sleeves and boot covers.

One crime scene investigator appeared to be carrying a backpack sprayer containing chemicals while entering the home. A crime scene photographer was also seen arriving and leaving Wednesday.

Yellow police tape surrounds the property, with uniformed officers posted around the perimeter.

Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD cold-case sergeant and adjunct professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said the size of the operation was notable.

“The sheer number of crime scene technicians that are going in and out of this house — usually you try to keep it to a minimum because you don’t want people trampling on things and stuff like that,” he told News Media. “I just think that there’s so many different nooks and crannies that they have to cover that they need this many people. So, I mean, we’re not talking three or four, we’re talking 10, 12, or 14 people going in and out of this place at one time.”

Police have returned to the property several times in recent weeks. Earlier this month, investigators removed boxes of evidence, including one labeled “glass vials.”

A Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson declined to discuss the latest searches in detail Thursday, citing the active investigation.

“Investigators continue to examine evidence and pursue all available leads,” she told News Media. “At this time, we are unable to provide specific details regarding investigative activities at the property, any potential findings, or the status of efforts to authenticate the previously recovered images and videos.”

Raymond “RC” Horsch, who produced BDSM-themed pornography and authored related books, died last year at age 82. Police searched his former home after arresting his 44-year-old son, Eugene Horsch, in June. The younger Horsch was taken into custody in a car with a woman who was carrying identification belonging to one of the seven missing women now associated with the case.

Earlier searches produced images and videos that police said appeared to show four of the seven missing women. Investigators also discovered a drum of chemicals connected to the home’s water system.

“Investigations predicated on forensic evidence can sometimes result in repeated trips back to a crime scene,” said James Gagliano, a retired FBI supervisory agent and Fox News contributor. “You find something that initiates a search into a different area. We saw how early release of a crime scene in Tucson led to so many questions. They won’t make that mistake here.”

Authorities have publicly identified only some of the women. Philadelphia police previously named Maribel Fresses, 26, who disappeared in 2018, and Gabrielle Amarando, 27. When Eugene Horsch was arrested, the woman with him had identification belonging to Blair Tonzelli, 38, who was last seen in Philadelphia in February 2023, police told News Media in September.

Two additional women were identified in local news reports. Both remain listed as missing in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUs.

One of them is Horsch’s former wife, Amy McHale, 54. She was 44 when she was last seen on June 13, 2016, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, which reported on the case in June.

The other is Nicole “Nikki” Fusaro, 34, according to CBS’ Philadelphia affiliate, citing local police sources. Fusaro was 27 when she disappeared near the intersection of Kensington and Allegheny Avenue in July 2019.

Investigators said they have also identified dozens of other people from the images. However, no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

Police have previously excavated underground pipes, but no bodies have been found.

Eugene Horsch’s arrest was unrelated to the disturbing discoveries police made at his father’s former home, and he has not been charged in connection with the women’s disappearances.

A 16-year-old gunman reportedly forced his way through a security entrance designed to protect students before killing three children and a teacher at an Oregon elementary school. The attack was stopped when an armed bystander, believed to be the father of a student, confronted the teenager.

The unidentified teenager was carrying a long gun when he arrived at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend shortly before 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, according to The Oregonian. Investigators say he fired at the locks on the school’s secure vestibules to gain entry.

The vestibules are designed to create an additional barrier between the outside world and the classrooms. Visitors are first admitted into a locked porch area, where they are screened before a second electronic door allows access to the school.

Despite those precautions, the gunman reportedly shot through the locks and reached the school’s special education area. Three children, aged five, eight and 11, and a teacher were killed. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith said she saw the unidentified shooter as he approached the school grounds.

In an emotional interview with KPTV on Thursday, Smith recalled seeing the teenager holding a long gun. She immediately contacted the main office, then moved her students into a corner of the classroom as the attack unfolded.

“They were so afraid—the looks on their faces,” Smith said. “It was really hard to see. I was just trying to calm them down.”

She added: “Some kids were praying, and some kids were consoling other kids, but they were doing it quietly because they know you don’t make any noise.”

Smith and her students appear to have survived because a bystander saw the teenager and followed him into the building. The man reportedly shot the gunman soon after the attack began, bringing the rampage to an end.

Police dispatch audio indicated that the armed bystander may have been a parent with a child at the school. Multiple news organizations cited a transmission saying: “It looks like the shooter has been neutralized, possibly shot by a father at the school.”

Several major questions remained unanswered Friday morning. Authorities had not released the shooter’s identity or discussed a possible motive, and it was unclear whether he had previously attended the school.

Officials also had not identified the victims or the bystander who shot the teenager. His intervention may have prevented the attack from claiming even more lives.

The Good Samaritan was reportedly sitting in a red Toyota Tacoma outside the school when he noticed the armed teenager approaching the Silver Rail building.

After becoming alarmed by what he saw, the driver confronted the teenager. The gunman responded by firing several rounds toward the truck.

A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that the teenager used a pump-action shotgun that had been purchased by his mother.

Images shared online showed at least three bullet holes along the lower section of the Toyota’s passenger-side door, with two more visible near the front of the door. Additional rounds damaged the paint at the bottom of the truck bed.

The rear passenger-side window also appeared to have been completely blown out, leaving no visible glass in the frame.

After opening fire on the truck, the assailant allegedly threw his gun over the school fence and hopped over – prompting the driver to call Deschutes County dispatchers at around 12.59pm.

As Bend police officers then raced to the scene, the gunman shot at the school’s locked doors.

It is unclear how far into the building before being killed. 

Cops arrived at the scene by 1.02pm but just moments later they were informed that the lone gunman was shot and killed by an unidentified community member who had followed the teenager into the building.

When officers then entered the building, they were able to confirm that the suspect was dead.

Out of an abundance of precaution, the police officers who rushed to the scene went room by room to evacuate the building as they worked to confirm there were no additional threats to the community.

Other police officers clad in bullet-proof vests and carrying assault rifles were seen peering into the vehicles parked at the school’s lot, while parents, teachers and children huddled together, embracing and wiping tears from their faces.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Dr Steven Cook held back tears as he thanked emergency responders and the school’s staff for their efforts to protect students during the attack.

‘Today, an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School,’ he began.

‘We are heartbroken. We are horrified. This is the kind of thing you hear about in other places and pray that it never happens here… today it happened to our children, our teachers and our families.’

A vigil for those killed and injured was held in Downtown Bend Thursday. The Central Oregon city of 120,000 people has been voted one of the best places to live in the United States.

It is a popular destination for outdoor pursuits and offers incredible skiing and hikes in the nearby Cascades mountain range, as well as Smith Rock State Park.  

The school district has now canceled all classes, activities and athletic events that were scheduled for Friday. 

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin traveled to Arizona’s southern border Thursday, highlighting what he described as a central achievement of President Trump’s immigration agenda: no migrants apprehended while attempting to enter the United States illegally had been released during the administration’s first 17 months.

Mullin inspected an undisclosed section of the border where a long-promised segment of Trump’s border wall was recently completed. He said the area had once been a major crossing point, with hundreds of thousands of migrants entering the country undetected during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

“Under the Biden administration, there was no national security — because you can’t have national security if you don’t know who’s inside the country,” Mullin told The California Post.

“A secure border, and knowing who’s entering your country, is where you can start actually saying we have national security,” he added.

Mullin estimated that between 500,000 and 1 million migrants were apprehended and released in that section of Arizona during the Biden years. He acknowledged, however, that the true total may never be established because he said records from the prior administration were incomplete.

By contrast, Mullin claimed, the number of migrants apprehended and released at the same location has fallen to zero since Trump returned to office.

The acting DHS secretary also said federal agents have detained 2,268 people identified as terrorists after they illegally entered the country since Trump’s return to the White House. He pointed to that figure as evidence that the administration’s immigration enforcement policies are improving public safety.

“American people deserve to be safe in their cities, in their towns, on their streets, in their neighborhoods, at their schools, while they’re shopping,” Mullin said. “And every single murder that takes place at the hands of an illegal is 100% preventable.”

Still, the administration’s border security push faces delays. Trump’s signature wall project could now take until the end of 2027 to complete, well beyond earlier projections.

Mullin had previously forecast that the initial wall construction would be finished by June of next year. He blamed lawsuits filed by environmental organizations and Trump’s political opponents, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, for disrupting the work.

According to Mullin, the litigation has complicated the government’s efforts to secure access to privately or otherwise restricted land along the border. He said that simply providing the project with more money would not necessarily lead to faster construction.

“National security should be first. We want to be good stewards of the land too,” Mullin said. “But because we have these activist judges, because we have areas like that, it’s slowing down our ability to gain access to some of this land.”

Mullin also criticized sanctuary policies in states such as California and New York, where local agencies face limits on how closely they can cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

He argued that those restrictions are hindering the Trump administration’s deportation and immigration enforcement efforts, even as local leaders and immigrant-rights advocates defend them.

“I get that some people may not like immigration enforcement, but the truth is, we’re a nation of laws,” Mullin said.

“The sanctuary cities and sanctuary states do nothing to help people’s lives out,” he added. “They actually cause more problems and take freedom away from American citizens who are trying to live their lives.”

A Florida man allegedly used a box cutter to slash a 70-year-old Publix customer, a little more than three months after a mental health court ended his probation in a separate case involving an unprovoked assault on a teenager.

The Punta Gorda Police Department said Lyons is accused of aggravated battery against a person 65 or older in connection with the Oct. 10 incident at the Publix supermarket on Tamiami Trail.

A sworn probable-cause affidavit said Lyons approached the shopper from behind shortly before 4 p.m. as the man was shopping inside the store.

The victim told investigators he felt someone strike him forcefully and turned around to see Lyons staring at him while holding a box-cutter blade. After touching his head and seeing blood on his hands, the man ran toward the front of the store, according to the affidavit.

Punta Gorda officers arrived and took Lyons into custody at the front of the store. Police said he was standing there with his hands on his head. Officers also found a box cutter in the aisle where the attack allegedly occurred.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Fawcett Memorial Hospital for treatment of a serious four- to six-inch wound stretching from his left cheek to his neck, as well as a minor cut on his upper chest, police said.

After waiving his Miranda rights, Lyons told investigators he had a deep “dislike for the 1960’s era” and said he had gone to the store intending to kill someone. Police said he selected the victim because the shopper “looked like he was from the 1960’s” and Lyons felt like “acing him out.”

“I just pulled it out of my pocket and stuck it in his neck,” Lyons said, according to the affidavit.

Lyons also told police he had mental health issues and allegedly acknowledged spending two days planning the attack. He said he intentionally left the weapon in the aisle so responding officers would not use a Taser or shoot him, according to investigators.

The latest alleged attack prompted renewed criticism from the mother of a teenager Lyons was accused of assaulting previously.

On March 13, 2025, Lyons allegedly punched a 16-year-old in the side of the face at a Wawa gas station in Port Charlotte while the teenager was holding open a door. After his arrest, the 20th Judicial Circuit court system placed Lyons in a specialized Mental Health Court diversion program.

Shawna Gentry, the teenager’s mother, told News Media that she opposed the diversion program and urged the state prosecutor to pursue jail time, alcohol treatment classes and probation. She said she warned court officials that Lyons remained an active and volatile threat.

Charlotte County court minutes show that Lyons’ probation ended July 6 without opposition from the State Attorney’s Office. The minutes included the handwritten message “Graduation! Congratulations!” next to a hand-drawn smiley face.

“The way the court handled it, the way the state attorney handled it was very odd to me,” Gentry said. “They told us they were sending him to a mental health facility, but he never went to a secured place. From what we saw, they just put him right back onto outpatient probation in our neighborhood and cut us completely out of the process.”

Gentry also disputed the suggestion that Lyons experienced a psychiatric break during the alleged attacks. In her view, he used references to mental health as a deliberate legal defense.

“When the sheriff came, it was almost like he knew exactly what to say,” Gentry said. “He immediately said, ‘Well, I’ve got mental health issues.’ He was so quick to use that word.”

She also said that Lyons appeared visibly intoxicated during the 2025 assault.

The court provided no tracking updates, safety alerts, or transitional monitoring to his prior victims, Gentry said.

Months later, Lyons walked into the Punta Gorda Publix.

Mental health courts

The National Treatment Court Resource Center counted 679 adult mental health courts nationwide at the end of 2024. A 2021 analysis of 30 evaluations linked mental health court participation to 74% lower odds of repeat offending.

Research on offenders with mental disorders suggests that recidivism depends more on criminal history than on diagnosis. A 2005 published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence found that the number of previous offenses was the strongest predictor of reoffending.

“My son saw it on TikTok , came running to me, and I could see the emotion in his face,” Gentry said. “Big old tears welled up in his eyes and he said, ‘Mom, the guy that hit me just stabbed an old man at Publix. You were right.'”

“The first thing out of my son’s mouth to the sheriff back in 2025 was that if that man had a gun or a knife, he wouldn’t be here today. Now an innocent senior citizen is in the hospital because the system refused to hold him accountable.”

The State Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial Circuit did not respond to comment for request by publication date.

Lyons remains held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail. His arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 16 at the Charlotte County Justice Center.

Court records indicated that Lyons declined a public defender. It’s unclear whether he has hired a private attorney.
