Achieve Top-Tier Upper Body Strength at 55+: The Push-Up Challenge You Need to Conquer

0

Push-ups have long been celebrated as a premier exercise for evaluating upper-body strength. Their simplicity, requiring no more than your own bodyweight and a bit of floor space, makes them an accessible and effective workout for anyone. Simply position your hands, brace your core, and begin pressing. While it sounds straightforward, the challenge intensifies once you begin accumulating repetitions.

In my extensive experience of over a decade in coaching athletes and enthusiasts alike, push-ups remain a go-to exercise for assessing strength and performance. Observing someone perform push-ups reveals much about their upper-body prowess and overall control. This is especially significant for individuals over 55, where the key muscles in the chest, shoulders, and triceps are crucial, but maintaining core engagement and hip alignment is equally vital to ensure each repetition is effective and counts towards their strength goals.

What makes push-ups particularly valuable is their emphasis on relative strength. Since you are lifting your own bodyweight, the exercise is both practical and a true test of one’s physical capabilities. Successfully completing a series of push-ups with proper form demonstrates not only upper-body strength but also the endurance of your core and the ability to maintain form under fatigue. In this article, we delve into why push-ups are such an effective measure of strength, the correct way to perform them, what your ability to perform them reveals about your strength level, and strategies to enhance your push-up performance over time.

After more than a decade coaching strength and performance, I still use push-ups because they give a clear snapshot fast. I can watch how someone sets up, lowers, presses, and holds their body line, and I’ll know a lot about their upper-body strength and control. After 55, that information matters even more. Your chest, shoulders, and triceps drive the movement, but your core has to stay tight, and your hips have to stay in line for every rep to count.

The big thing here is relative strength. You’re moving your own bodyweight, which makes the test practical and honest. If you can knock out a strong set of push-ups with steady form, you’re showing that your upper body can produce force, your trunk can hold position, and your body can keep working as fatigue builds. Below, you’ll learn why push-ups are such a strong marker, how to do them correctly, what your rep count says, and how to build more strength over time.

Why Push-Ups Are a Great Test of Upper Body Strength After 50

Shutterstock

Push-ups work because they combine several important qualities into a single movement. Your chest, shoulders, and triceps handle the pressing, while your upper back helps control the shoulder blades. At the same time, your abs and glutes keep your body from sagging or shifting. That makes each rep a full-body effort, even though most people think of push-ups as a chest exercise.

They also test strength endurance. One clean push-up shows you can produce force. A full set shows how well you can maintain that force as your muscles start to fatigue. That matters after 50 because daily life usually asks for repeated effort. Getting up from the floor, pushing yourself off a bench, carrying gear, loading groceries, and bracing during a stumble all depend on upper-body strength that holds up.

Push-ups also reward good control. You can’t hide much when you’re moving your own body through space. Your elbows need to track well, your torso needs to stay firm, and your breathing needs to stay steady. When those pieces stay together across a longer set, it says a lot about your strength and overall fitness.

How to Perform Push-Ups With Proper Form

A strong push-up starts with the setup. Your hands, torso, hips, and feet all need to work together before you begin the first rep. Once you’re in position, the goal is simple: lower under control, press with intent, and keep each rep looking the same.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your hands on the floor slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. Extend your legs behind you and create a straight line from your head to your heels.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes before you lower.
  4. Bend your elbows and lower your chest toward the floor with control.
  5. Keep your elbows bent at least 90 degrees while keeping your body straight.
  6. Press through your hands to return to the top position.
  7. Repeat each rep at a steady pace until your form changes.

A quick note on the movement standard. A rep counts when your elbows reach at least 90 degrees, and your body stays in a straight line. Modify with incline push-ups, countertop push-ups, or hands-elevated push-ups to meet your current level while building toward the floor.

Best Variations: Incline Push-Up, Tempo Push-Up, Close-Grip Push-Up, Pause Push-Up, Decline Push-Up.

Push-Up Standards After 50: What Your Rep Count Means

Shutterstock

Your number should come from clean reps. Keep the same depth, body line, and pace from the first rep to the last. Once your elbows stop reaching the target range, your hips drop, or your tempo rushes, record the reps you completed with strong form.

  • Under 10 reps: You’re building the base. This range gives you a clear starting point and plenty of room to build strength through clean reps, steady lowering, and better body position.
  • 10 to 20 reps: This is a solid range after 50. Your upper body can handle repeated effort, and your core has enough endurance to support a longer set.
  • 20 to 35 reps: You’re showing strong upper-body strength. Your pressing muscles, shoulders, and core are working well together, and your form can stay organized as fatigue builds.
  • 35+ reps: This is elite. Completing 35 or more clean push-ups without stopping shows excellent relative strength, upper-body endurance, and full-body control for your age group.

How to Build More Push-Ups After 50

Improving your push-up number starts with better reps. More volume helps, but only when the reps stay clean. Think of push-ups as a skill and a strength exercise at the same time. Your setup, tempo, range of motion, and breathing all matter. When those pieces improve, your numbers usually climb without needing to force every set to failure.

The best approach mixes strength work with practice. Some days, use easier variations to build volume. Other days, slow the reps down or pause at the bottom to build more control. You’ll also want to train the muscles that support the movement, especially your upper back, shoulders, triceps, and core. That gives your body more strength to pull from when the set gets longer.

  • Use incline push-ups to build volume: Elevating your hands lets you practice more quality reps while still training the same pattern.
  • Add slow lowering reps: Take three to five seconds to lower yourself. This builds control through the full range.
  • Train presses and rows: Dumbbell presses, cable presses, rows, and pulldowns help build the chest, shoulders, triceps, and upper back.
  • Practice submaximal sets: Stop a few reps before your form changes. This lets you build more total volume without turning every set into a grind.
  • Use short rest clusters: Try 5 reps, rest 20 seconds, then repeat for several rounds. This helps you build work capacity while keeping each rep clean.
  • Strengthen your core separately: Planks, dead bugs, and carries help your body stay tight during longer sets.
  • Retest every few weeks: Use the same movement standard each time so your progress stays easy to track.

Push-ups give you a simple, honest look at upper-body strength after 50. If you can complete 35 or more clean reps without stopping, you’ve built strength that stands out. Even better, you’ve built strength you can use, with your upper body, core, and hips working together from the first rep to the last.

Trudeau Faces Criticism for Skipping Canada’s Opening Game for Personal Commitment

0

Justin Trudeau found himself under scrutiny after choosing to miss Canada’s World Cup debut in favor of attending the US team’s game, where his girlfriend, Katy Perry, performed.

Having served as Canada’s Prime Minister from 2015 to 2025, Trudeau was notably absent when Canada played to a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking their first-ever home game in World Cup history.

Trudeau took to social media to express his unwavering Canadian spirit while explaining his absence, emphasizing his commitment to supporting his partner.

“Sometimes, you have to fulfill supportive boyfriend duties. But everyone knows which team I hope will lift the Cup,” Trudeau posted.

Despite his explanation, Trudeau continued to face criticism and mockery on social media platform X throughout Saturday night.

‘Just last year you told people to boycott the US because of the big bad orange man but here you are, hanging at Coachella (using plastic products your party banned), shopping in NYC with your untalented son and now cheering US soccer. Hypocrite as usual,’ wrote one.

Another called Trudeau ‘still insufferable.’

The 54-year-old even got some stick for referring to the multiplatinum pop star as his ‘girlfriend.’

‘That’s disgusting! Boyfriend at this age, you have big kids bro!’

Trudeau has three children with his ex-wife Sophie.

One person on social media said he related to Trudeau, writing: ‘I know the feeling bro.’

More than 70,000 fans packed out SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles ahead of the USMNT opener, and many were expecting a high-energy show from the ‘California Gurls’ hitmaker.

Instead, the pop superstar performed just one song – a little-known album track from two years ago called ‘Wonder’.

Instead of belting out her hits – such as ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and ‘Firework’ – fans were left wanting more as she sang one song ten minutes before the game and then quickly departed the stage.

Perry was joined by ten-year-old Tius Luka for the performance, and he received plaudits for his incredible vocals from those watching at home.

The Norwegian boy has gained popularity in recent months for his viral covers of classic songs, and he will likely go down as the star of the show.

In LA, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla had earlier performed a much more high-energy show during part one of the pregame, which began around 90 minutes before the match.

The first performance then ended and the stage was dismantled, leading to a social media meltdown with fans concerned that Perry had pulled out of the show at late notice.

But she did eventually take to the stage after the players had warmed up, finally performing around ten minutes before the scheduled kickoff time.

When Perry was announced as the opening ceremony headliner ahead of the tournament, the decision raised eyebrows – in part due to the nationality of her politician boyfriend Trudeau.

Perry and Canadian Trudeau – the former prime minister of his country – were first linked back in July 2025 after being spotted walking together in a park in Montreal.

Their romance has since gone from strength to strength, and they were spotted embracing on the singer’s yacht in Santa Barbara in early October.

They officially confirmed their relationship in December by sharing photos together on the politician’s visit to Japan, with one fan referring to the post as the ‘craziest hard launch in the history of the free world.’

The USA went on to success in their opening match, thrashing Paraguay 4-1.

Inside Joan Collins’ Most Costly and Dramatic Divorce of the ’80s

Joan Collins has been enjoying marital bliss with Percy Gibson since 2002. However, her journey to find lasting love was fraught with challenges, including four divorces. Among these, her separation from singer Peter Holm stands out as particularly contentious, leaving a significant mark on the “Dynasty” star both emotionally and financially.

Collins’ union with Peter Holm was her briefest, as she sought an annulment in late 1986, just a year after their wedding. Citing irreconcilable differences and fraud, she was determined to end the marriage, requesting that if annulment wasn’t possible, a divorce should proceed. Collins accused Holm of controlling behavior, financial misconduct, and even violence during disputes. Additionally, she claimed he acted aggressively toward her child’s nanny, prompting the nanny’s resignation. Despite Holm’s denials, Collins secured a restraining order against him.

The saga intensified when Holm demanded a staggering $80,000 in spousal support and engaged in a legal tussle over a house Collins had bought shortly before their separation. Holm dramatically barricaded himself inside the residence, going so far as to chain the gates. Evicted eventually, he staged a protest outside with placards questioning if different laws applied to soap opera stars and the homeless. Although the marriage wasn’t annulled, Collins and Holm finalized their divorce in early 1988, with Collins paying $180,000 and relinquishing a $400,000 car. In response to the settlement, Collins nonchalantly told the Los Angeles Times, “It’s fine.”

Joan Collins’ ordeal with Peter Holm was laden with drama beyond the financial settlement. Just days after Holm’s protest, his alleged mistress took the stand, dramatically unfolding a narrative that seemed lifted straight from “Dynasty.” According to the Los Angeles Times, the mistress testified that Holm had concocted a scheme for both to marry wealthy partners, register assets jointly, and later reveal their relationship. This revelation was dramatic enough, but the scene escalated when the mistress fainted and was carried from the courtroom on a stretcher. It was a spectacle worthy of its own soap opera episode.

Joan Collins’ divorce from Peter Holm was dramatic

Unfortunately for Joan Collins, on top of her massive payout to Peter Holm, the proceedings leading up to it had been exceptionally dramatic. We already said there was a picket involved, but that’s not all.

A few days after Holm’s protest outside his and Collins’ marital home, his rumored mistress was called to the stand, and to say that was like something out of “Dynasty” would be a sore understatement. For starters, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the mistress claimed in court that Holm had hatched a plan for both of them to marry rich, have their spouses’ properties registered jointly, then go public with their relationship a few years later. That would be dramatic enough on its own, but there was more. The woman also collapsed after her testimony and had to be taken out of the court on a stretcher. Oh, what we’d give for Andy, a camera, and a time machine.

For what it’s worth, over time, Collins has learned to laugh at the drama. In fact, in a 2022 interview, Collins even poked fun at all of her ex-husbands. Speaking on “The Graham Norton Show” of the first, she explained that she’d known before the wedding that it was a disaster waiting to happen, but that her father had told her she had to go through with it because the who’s-who of Hollywood had already RSVPed yes. As for subsequent marriages, she quipped, “The second and third one, they were fine, okay-ish, but the fourth one…” Thankfully, despite telling UPI that her takeaway from the experience was to never again walk down the aisle, Collins eventually did find her true prince charming in Percy Gibson. She certainly fought long and hard for her happily ever after!

Investigator of Unabomber Case Discloses Cole Allen’s Turning Point in Plot Against Trump

0

A retired FBI profiler has provided fresh insights into the mindset of the gunman who disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in what appears to have been a plan to assassinate the president and other top officials.

Thirty-one-year-old Cole Allen faced arraignment on Monday, charged with plotting to kill Donald Trump, following the chaotic events that unfolded at the prestigious annual gathering on Saturday.

Jim Clemente, a seasoned author and former FBI profiler known for his work on the Unabomber case, shared his analysis with Fox News. Clemente suggested that Allen’s actions stemmed from a profound disregard for his own life, driven by his disapproval of political figures’ conduct.

“He didn’t exhibit a general disregard for human life,” Clemente explained. “Rather, it was a targeted disdain, closely linked to his own self-perception.”

Clemente further elaborated, “His actions were clearly motivated by politicians’ behavior, which led him to target them specifically. This is likely a sentiment he has harbored and possibly expressed for some time.”

‘But clearly, he’s gotten to the point where that rose to a level — or his own self-image lowered to a level — where he felt like he needed to do something to feel better about his own image or what he perceived the world to be at this time.’

Authorities said Allen stormed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton before armed security tackled him, and gunfire was exchanged.

One Secret Service member was struck in their protective gear. Although no one was harmed, the harrowing sequence of events underscored security concerns and renewed conversations surrounding heightened political violence in the US.

Investigators uncovered an apparent manifesto after the attack, which Allen allegedly sent to family members minutes before he stormed the lobby of the hotel.

The writings detailed his plans to target administration officials from ‘highest-ranking to lowest,’ and demonstrated extreme anti-Trump sentiments.

Allen’s alleged manifesto, first obtained in full and published by the New York Post, said his only targets were administration officials, and he would not fire at hotel employees or guests.

The writings also included the suspect’s plans to minimize casualties by using buckshot rather than slugs.

‘I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary (on the basis that most people *chose* to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist, and traitor, and are thus complicit) but I really hope it doesn’t come to that,’ the message read.

Allen is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology and described himself on social media as a game developer, engineer, scientist and teacher.

Dylan Wakayama, the president of a nonprofit that collaborates with Allen’s employer, C2 Education, told the Los Angeles Times that Allen’s students thought he was intelligent, nice and quiet.

‘They [Allen’s students] were completely shocked when I told them that this all went down,’ Wakayama said.

‘I think all of us in Torrance would be shocked if this is the man who attempted to kill the president of the United States,’ he added.

Max Harris, a senior whom Allen had tutored in Torrance, told the New York Times that Allen seemed ‘like a completely average guy.

‘I never would have expected anything like this from a guy like him,’ Harris said.

Clemente told Fox News that based on what he knows about Allen and his alleged manifesto, it did not seem like the suspect was a psychopath.

‘He doesn’t sound like somebody who is unstable mentally. Certainly, emotionally, that’s a different story … nothing that I have read or seen indicates that he was having some kind of psychotic break or that he would be schizophrenic,’ Clemente added.

The FBI profiler argued that Allen likely knew that if he ran through a security checkpoint at the high-profile event, he could be met with gunfire.

‘And that might have been part of his motivation, that he didn’t have the will to live, and once you lose the will to keep yourself alive, other people’s lives become much less important,’ Clemente said.

Allen’s alleged manifesto had included an apparent acknowledgment that he could be injured by armed agents.

‘I apologize to my colleagues and students for saying I had a personal emergency (by the time anyone reads this, I probably most certainly DO need to go to the ER, but can hardly call that not a self-inflicted status.)’ the manifesto read in part.

Allen has not entered a plea to the charges against him. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said on Monday that law enforcement expects to bring more charges against Allen. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday for a detention hearing.

Advice Column: Balancing Support—Coping with a Partner’s Cancer While Addressing Your Own Health Needs

0

DEAR ABBY: My partner of 16 years is battling cancer, and I’m incredibly proud of his resilience. Recently, I underwent an EKG, and the results were concerning. When I shared this with him, he immediately shifted the focus to his own health struggles. Am I wrong to feel upset by this? Throughout his battle, I’ve supported him unwaveringly, taking him to appointments and tending to his needs. I doubt you’ll respond to this letter, but I felt compelled to write it. — FRUSTRATED IN MAINE

DEAR FRUSTRATED: You are certainly not selfish. It’s natural to be worried about your health while also caring for your partner. Your feelings are valid, and it’s clear that your partner’s reliance on you has left little room for your own needs to be acknowledged. Consider having an open dialogue with him about your concerns. Discuss how you can both support each other more effectively, ensuring your needs are also met.

DEAR ABBY: Could you help raise awareness about the importance of service dogs for people like us who rely on them? These dogs are trained to perform vital tasks for their handlers, which can include detecting high or low glucose levels, anticipating mood swings, anxiety, depression, or even impending seizures.

Service dogs are not merely pets. In states like New Mexico and many others, it’s illegal to falsely claim a dog as a service animal. Dogs in training have the same access rights as fully trained service dogs, meaning they cannot be refused entry. Hotels that charge fees for pets cannot impose these charges on service dogs, and airlines must allow them to travel free of charge. These animals are permitted in all public places.

The handler must maintain control over the dog at all times, and excessive barking is not allowed. A single bark is not considered excessive. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, only two questions can be asked: whether the animal is a service dog and what tasks it is trained to perform. Inquiring about the handler’s disability or why they need a service dog is prohibited. My service dog in training is learning to detect specific medical conditions and assist me accordingly.

Many people are unaware of proper behavior around service dogs. Never distract, talk to or pet the service dog. Do not make eye contact with it either. Distracting my dog could cause a serious problem for me. — AWARENESS ADVOCATE

DEAR ADVOCATE: Thank you for your instructive letter about service dog responsibilities and etiquette. I hope it will prove useful to my readers because there appears to be some confusion about this subject, due to so many dog owners cheating the system by representing their pets as service animals.

Scotland Breaks 36-Year World Cup Win Drought with Triumph Over Haiti

Scotland has ascended to the top of Group C following a thrilling 1-0 win against Haiti in Boston, marking their first victory at the FIFA World Cup in 36 years.

John McGinn’s crucial goal in the first half was the difference-maker, handing Steve Clarke’s team three vital points in their World Cup opener.

This victory is Scotland’s first in the global tournament since they triumphed over Sweden during Italia 90.

The significance of Scotland’s win was amplified when Brazil and Morocco settled for a 1-1 draw earlier, positioning the Scots favorably for upcoming challenges against both formidable teams.

McGinn delivers historic moment

McGinn found the back of the net in the 28th minute, capitalizing on Scotland’s strong start, while Haiti remained a constant threat throughout the match.

Reflecting on the victory, the Aston Villa midfielder revealed the mindset that inspired his performance.

“These opportunities don’t come around too often,” McGinn said.

“We’ve said before at major tournaments, did we bring our best? Did we leave the tournament saying we could have done more or we could have shown more?”

He added: “That’s what I tried to bring to the game tonight. Sometimes things didn’t come off but I promised myself driving up to the stadium that I would be positive and try things. If they didn’t come off, get the ball and try it again.”

While Scotland created opportunities, they were forced to defend resolutely in the closing stages as Haiti searched for an equaliser.

Clarke praises resilience

Scotland manager Steve Clarke admitted the performance was not perfect but was delighted with the result.

“I just said to the captain there, Andy Robertson, it’s about time we won a game in the group stage!” Clarke said.

“We probably put the supporters through it a little bit. Everyone said, ‘must-win game’. We won the game.”

The coach also praised his players’ defensive commitment, adding: “If teams let them play, but if they have to dig in and show that character and that resilience, that’s what they do as well.”

The victory gives Scotland a dream start to their campaign and boosts hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

Study Ranks LA’s Downtown Among Least Vibrant Globally Amidst Ongoing Challenges

0

In a recent global survey, downtown Los Angeles has been identified as one of the least lively urban areas worldwide, casting new doubts on the city’s efforts to rejuvenate its core.

This critical evaluation is highlighted in Gensler’s 2026 City Pulse report, which places Los Angeles significantly behind several international cities when assessing the vitality, engagement, and charm of its downtown area.

Among 75 prominent cities globally, Los Angeles is ranked near the bottom for vibrancy, with only about 65 percent of its residents perceiving the downtown area as lively.

In contrast, cities such as New York, Chicago, Sydney, and Shanghai scored above 80 percent in terms of downtown vibrancy, outpacing Los Angeles by a considerable margin.

These results present a concerning scenario for a city that has been striving for years to attract workers, shoppers, and tourists back to its urban heart, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic’s challenges.

Gensler surveyed roughly 35,000 residents around the world, asking them to evaluate various aspects of city life.

Los Angeles ranked as the 20th-lowest city globally for vibrancy and the 11th-lowest among the 34 American cities included in the study.

Urban planners say the results reflect a downtown still struggling to recover from years of office departures, retail vacancies and lingering concerns about safety.

The report comes after years of high-profile corporate departures from California, with companies citing taxes, regulation, crime concerns, housing costs and remote-work trends as reasons for relocating operations elsewhere.

Major firms including Chevron, Oracle and Tesla have shifted headquarters or significant operations out of California in recent years.

Downtown LA has been particularly vulnerable to the post-pandemic office slump, with large employers reducing office footprints and leaving behind millions of square feet of vacant workspace.

City data shows the number of businesses reporting departures from downtown Los Angeles has risen sharply over the past two years, adding to concerns about the district’s long-term economic health.

Empty office towers and shuttered storefronts have become increasingly common sights across parts of downtown, fueling concerns that investment and foot traffic are flowing elsewhere.

Kelly Farrell, managing director of Gensler’s Los Angeles office, said the city’s biggest challenge is getting businesses and workers back into the downtown district.

‘LA’s kind of central problem is that businesses have left LA. We need them to bring the offices back in,’ Farrell said.

‘Bring the people back in so they’re staying after work and interacting with those businesses that are in the area.’

While some neighborhoods within downtown continue to attract visitors and investment, the broader district faces a perception problem that experts say has become increasingly difficult to shake.

The report identified several ingredients that successful downtowns tend to share, including a mix of residential housing, office space, retail stores, walkability and strong cultural attractions.

Los Angeles possesses many of those assets on paper. Downtown remains home to government offices, financial institutions, sports venues, museums and entertainment destinations.

Yet many of those advantages have been overshadowed by a steady exodus of office tenants and businesses in recent years.

Data from the Los Angeles Office of Finance showed an increase in companies leaving the downtown area over the past two years after a temporary slowdown following the pandemic.

The vacancy problem has become particularly visible in the city’s Financial District.

Commercial real estate firm CBRE reported that nearly 40 percent of office space in the area is effectively empty, while roughly 30 percent of retail space sits vacant.

The report found that the key to a thriving downtown is not simply attracting visitors but encouraging them to remain there.

Researchers concluded that the amount of time people spend downtown is a more meaningful measure of vitality than raw visitor numbers alone.

That remains a significant challenge for Los Angeles, which has struggled for years to convince residents to spend more time in the city center.

Concerns about crime and public safety continue to weigh heavily on public perception.

Business owners have frequently pointed to vandalism, robberies and assaults as reasons for relocating elsewhere, while some residents remain reluctant to visit due to fears about safety and a perceived lack of police visibility.

At the same time, law enforcement officials argue conditions are improving.

Los Angeles Police Department Captain Kelly Muniz said in April that crime in the area had fallen by 10 percent compared with the previous year.

Homelessness even started improving recently in LA County, with the number of unhoused people dropping in 2024 and 2025, according to the point-in-time count. As of last year, there were an estimated 72,000 unhoused people in the county.

Even so, the Trump administration has been attempting to overhaul the way LA and other places across California address homelessness.

The administration wants to move funds from permanent housing into temporary shelters and prioritize housing programs that require sobriety.

Farrell believes a stronger downtown population could further accelerate that trend.

‘One of the best things we can do for safety is have an abundance of population,’ she said.

‘You will see right now that we have a lot of great ground-floor retail that’s empty. As that gets fuller, we typically see that crime starts to go down with it.’

Despite the gloomy ranking, Farrell stressed that fortunes can change quickly.

She noted that perceptions of vibrancy often fluctuate significantly from one survey year to the next and expressed confidence that a return of offices and workers could dramatically improve downtown’s standing.

Prominent Liberal Figure Announces Departure from Political Arena

Key points

  • The more than two decades Duniam’s spent in politics have “taken a toll” on his family.
  • The senator rejected claims his decision was influenced by One Nation’s rising popularity.

A prominent member of the Liberal Party has announced his decision to retire from federal politics, assuring that the move was not influenced by the party’s declining poll numbers. Jonathon Duniam, who serves as the Opposition’s spokesperson for Home Affairs, has chosen not to run again for his Senate seat representing Tasmania, planning to step down from his parliamentary role before the conclusion of 2026.

At 43 years old, Duniam expressed his desire to withdraw from his political career after a decade in federal parliament. His primary motivation is to devote more time to his family, particularly his three children, a commitment he feels is long overdue.

“After dedicating 10 years to federal politics, on top of 15 years involved in various political roles, I have spent a total of 25 years in this demanding field,” Duniam shared with reporters in Hobart on Sunday. “The long hours and frequent absences from home have inevitably impacted my family life.”

He further elaborated, “This position has been a significant responsibility, consuming a substantial amount of my time and energy.” As Duniam prepares to leave the political arena, he emphasizes the personal toll his career has taken and the importance of reclaiming time with his loved ones.

“This job has been a very serious one, and as a result, has taken up a lot of time and a lot of energy.

“It is odd to fight hard to get in. It’s even odder when you fight harder to stay and then to pull up stumps.

“When family come into it, you can’t think twice about it. Your priorities become very, very clear.”

‘One of their biggest and brightest’

The loss of senator Duniam was another blow for the Liberal Party, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said.

“The Liberal Party lose one of their best and brightest when he leaves the parliament,” he told Sky News on Sunday.

Senator Duniam said poll numbers had not influenced his decision to retire, despite a surge in One Nation’s primary vote placing the party ahead of Labor and the Coalition.

“This is something that we’ve been weighing up, and my team, my colleagues in Canberra, trusted friends know that I’ve been weighing this up for a while,” he said.

“A good friend of mine told me graveyards are full of indispensable people and at the end of the day, someone else is going to take my place.”

Senator Duniam first entered federal politics at the 2016 election, when he became the only new Tasmanian member of the upper house.

He came to Canberra after previously serving as an adviser to former Tasmanian Liberal senator Eric Abetz, and later as a deputy chief of staff to Tasmanian premier Will Hodgman.

He served as an assistant minister for forestry and fisheries in Scott Morrison’s government and later held the opposition spokesman role for the portfolio following the Liberals’ 2022 election defeat.

Senator Duniam became the opposition home affairs spokesman after Angus Taylor took over as opposition leader in February.

He said his long lead time for his retirement would allow a successor to build up a profile before the next election, which must be held before May 2028.

“I discussed my decision with Angus some time ago and he has asked me to continue for a short period of time to complete work on our immigration policies,” he said.

“Now is the right time for my party to choose new Senate team members who will carry forward the fight for Tasmania and for the values in which the Liberal Party believes.”

Fellow Tasmanian Liberal Wendy Askew announced her retirement earlier in June, with political operative Brad Stansfield saying he would stand for pre-selection.

Emergency Authorization Granted for Screwworm Medications: What Pet Owners Need to Know for Dogs and Cats

0

(NEXSTAR) – Following the discovery of the flesh-consuming New World screwworm in a small dog in New Mexico, the Food and Drug Administration has issued an emergency use authorization for a medication aimed at combating this parasite in pets.

The approved drug, nitenpyram, is suitable for use in treating screwworm infestations in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens that are at least four weeks old and weigh a minimum of 2 pounds.

Concerns have escalated recently as the New World screwworm made its way into the United States and began to spread. These screwworm flies deposit their eggs in open wounds, as well as in areas like the nose, ears, eyes, or mouth. The eggs hatch into parasitic larvae, commonly known as maggots, which then consume the surrounding tissue as they dig deeper.

Though screwworms predominantly threaten livestock, they are not selective and can infest any warm-blooded animal, including humans and household pets. An instance has already been reported in a small pet dog in New Mexico.

Without intervention, a screwworm infestation can prove fatal.

Who should get nitenpyram for their pets?

The only pet owners who need the screwworm-fighting medication are those whose dogs or cats are currently infected. Nitenpyram doesn’t prevent infestation by the parasite, it only treats it.

Signs of a New World screwworm infection include:

  • Feeling or seeing maggots move in a skin wound or sore, or in the eyes, ears, nose and mouth
  • Skin wounds that worsen
  • Foul odor from the wound
  • Bleeding open sores

The medication works quickly, the FDA says, “killing most NWS larvae within hours of the first dose.” A second dose is administered six hours after the first.

Veterinarians may also need to manually remove live or dead larvae from the infected wound.

The pills are available over the counter, the FDA says, with dosage based on our pet’s weight. Pet owners should still consult with a veterinarian to prevent a repeat infestation.

OG Anunoby’s Instagram Mishap: Inside the Knicks’ Unplanned Locker Room Reveal!

OG Anunoby might excel at tipping in shots, but navigating technology seems to be another story.

After the Knicks clinched a 94-90 win in Game 5, securing the team’s first NBA title in over half a century, the star forward inadvertently gave fans a peek into the post-game locker room jubilation via Instagram live.

The video kicks off with champagne flying around the gleaming Larry O’Brien championship trophy, while Karl-Anthony Towns makes a cameo, exclaiming, “We live baby, we live,” all while sporting protective goggles.

It was then that Anunoby realized his unintended broadcast and began to fret.

“How do you end the live?” he asked repeatedly. “How do you end this?”

After 25 seconds, the show came to and end with Anunoby’s finger partially over his phone camera.

While it made for a funny postgame moment, but it won’t overshadow Anunoby’s efforts to get the Knicks to this point.

He finished Saturday’s game with 11 points and eight rebounds, including the final board of contest as he held the ball when the final buzzer sounded.

He had an NBA Finals and career-defining moment in Game 4 when he tipped in the game-winning shot that sent Madison Square Garden into hysterics and gave the Knicks a commanding 3-1 series lead.

It has since been discussed as a top New York sports moment and skyrocketed Anunoby to Knicks legend status.

The celebrations will only continue for Anunoby and New York as the Knicks championship parade is set for Thursday, June 18.
