LOS ANGELES — Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, is currently seeking access to funds from a trust set up by his parents, as he faces charges of their murder. Reiner claims he requires these funds for his legal defense in the ongoing case.
Attorneys representing the 32-year-old Reiner filed a petition in a Los Angeles County court on Monday, arguing that the trustees are withholding the funds without valid legal grounds. They assert that Nick Reiner is entitled to these resources to aid in his defense.
“Nick loved his parents deeply and is heartbroken by their tragic deaths. The legal proceedings surrounding the trust do not concern the circumstances of their deaths,” the petition states. “As with any accused individual, Nick is presumed innocent until proven guilty and deserves the right to defend himself using assets that legally belong to him.”

Rob Reiner, a prominent director, along with his wife Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were tragically found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14. They had been fatally stabbed. Nick Reiner was arrested shortly after and has since entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of murder.
Initially, Nick Reiner hired renowned attorney Alan Jackson to represent him. However, Jackson withdrew from the case within a month, citing reasons he could not disclose. The recent court filing indicates that Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover Jackson’s legal fees but later decided against it.
In a declaration included with the petition, Jackson said “my firm stands ready, willing, and able to resume representation of Mr. Reiner” if the funds become available.
The filing says that apart from the larger Reiner family trust, which is not at issue, Rob and Michele Reiner established smaller individual trusts for Nick Reiner and his siblings. It says they left “unambiguous instructions” in Nick Reiner’s trust, established in 1993, that he was to receive half its money when he turned 30 and the rest at 35.
But, the filing says, Reiner never received the funds he was entitled to at 30, and that the trustee overseeing them since February – attorney Paul R. Kanin – has given “a shifting series of excuses and justifications” to deny Reiner the money, including concerns about Reiner’s competence that have no bearing on a payout that is mandatory.
Reiner says he should also get the money he was to receive at 35 immediately because his defense and his need for basic necessities in jail require it.
The petition says the trust has at least $1.5 million in assets, but that Kanin will not share the exact amount of its value.
Kanin did not immediately respond to an after-hours email seeking comment.
Proceedings in Reiner’s murder case are moving slowly. He is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing in September. He is eligible for the death penalty, but District Attorney Nathan Hochman has said his office has not yet decided whether to seek it.
Authorities have said nothing about possible motives, and leaks in the case have been virtually nonexistent on both sides. A court order has kept most details of the autopsy secret. Many of the most basic questions about the killing remain unanswered publicly.
On the day he left the case, Jackson, speaking outside court, declared adamantly that “pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”
In April, Jake Reiner gave his first detailed account of the experience of losing his parents and having his brother at the center of it, calling it “a living nightmare” that is “too devastating to comprehend.”
Rob Reiner was a prolific director whose work included some of the most memorable and endlessly watchable movies of the 1980s and ’90s. His credits included “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally… ,” during the production of which he met photographer Michele Singer. They wed soon after and were married for 36 years.
Savannah Guthrie from The Today Show has opened up about the emotional toll of resuming work while her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing. She confessed to shedding tears ‘every day’ since her return.
During a heartfelt conversation with cohost Jenna Bush Hager on Monday, Guthrie, 54, admitted, “I find myself crying each morning on my commute to work.”
The last known sighting of Guthrie’s mother was at her Tucson, Arizona home on the night of January 31, with suspicions of abduction surrounding her disappearance.
Expressing gratitude, Guthrie praised her colleagues for creating a “beautiful” and “supportive” atmosphere, which has been a source of comfort since she came back to the show in April after taking a break to join the search efforts.
In spite of her ongoing struggle, she vowed to remain resilient during this challenging time.
‘Like so many people out there, you can hold all of these things together. I tell that to my kids, too.
‘We can hold our sadness and we can hold our joy and if you don’t believe it, just watch me. I’m going to show you,’ she said
The anchor also urged onlookers to not give up on her mother, crying at points.
‘I cry every morning on the way to work and I cry every morning on the way home,’ Savannah Guthrie, 54, said during an emotional segment on Monday’s fourth hour of the Today Show
Four months into the search for her mother Nancy, 84, the senior remains missing
‘We still need everybody’s prayers. We still wish someone would call and say what they know,’ she told Bush Hager.
Both found common ground through their Christian faith.
Guthrie brought up some ‘famous scripture’ – Isaiah 40:31 – that she felt captured her current plight.
‘There’s a part of it which says, “You’ll walk and not grow faint,”‘ she said, interpreting the phrases to mean a time in one’s life ‘when just walking and not growing faint is about as good as it can get.
‘And that’s what I feel like I’m doing. I’m trying to walk and not grow faint, and it’s a gift from God that I’m able to do so,’ she said.
‘But it’s always, always with me, you know?’
Guthrie – a Today anchor since 2012 – admitted it would have been more difficult to return to ‘any other kind of job.’
‘But I just felt like, ‘Well, what else should I do?’” she said.
The hosts found common ground with their Christian faith, which Guthrie credited for helping her through
‘Bring her home,’ Guthrie wrote over an image on Instagram Sunday. It appeared to depict the ascension of Jesus Christ. Her family is offering up to $1million for information leading to Nancy’s recovery
‘And my mom would have said the same, like, “Honey, just keep going, just keep going.” And so I am.’
She posted a message to Instagram the night before that reiterated how her mother has yet to be found.
‘Bring her home,’ Guthrie wrote over an image appearing to depict the ascension of Jesus Christ – echoing her previous social media posts pleading for the public’s assistance.
The Guthrie family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the senior’s recovery. There are no suspects, according to local police and the FBI.
Guthrie has previously said she fears that her fame and fortune may have made her mother a target for kidnappers. Nancy required medication for a heart condition to stay alive.
Guthrie has said she realizes that her mother may no longer be alive but that she and her family are desperate to bring her home anyway, so they can give her a Christian burial if necessary.
In a shocking act of violence, a stabbing incident at New York City’s bustling Penn Station left several individuals wounded, prompting a wave of panic among commuters. This disturbing event, confirmed by authorities, unfolded beneath Madison Square Garden, a hub teeming with travelers.
The alarming episode occurred around 7 p.m. on June 7. Amtrak Police swiftly apprehended a person of interest at the scene, also recovering a knife. However, the suspect’s identity, a potential motive, and any charges are yet to be revealed by the authorities.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered five victims suffering from slashing wounds. These individuals were promptly taken to a nearby hospital and are reportedly in stable condition, as confirmed by the NYPD to Oxygen.com. Additionally, a sixth person, who sustained a minor injury, received medical attention at a different hospital, according to NBC News.
Officials have not disclosed whether the victims were specifically targeted in this attack.
Penn Station, one of the busiest transit centers in the United States, accommodates Amtrak services, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), NJ Transit, and several New York City subway lines. The location’s high traffic underscores the gravity of such incidents, impacting both the immediate safety of individuals and the broader sense of security for daily commuters.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident “horrific” in a statement shared on social media.
“Based on the information available right now, six people were stabbed and the alleged perpetrator is in custody following a swift response from the Amtrak Police Department,” the mayor wrote on X. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery.”
He also thanked first responders for their quick work in handling the situation.
“I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders,” he continued, “who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care.”
What Will Security Be Like For Game Three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden
The attack came less than 24 hours before basketball fans are expected to descend on Madison Square Garden, which is located above Penn Station, for game three of the NBA Finals June 8.
Officials have not indicated that the stabbing was connected to the event, andsaid security plansfor the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs game were already expected to be extensive.
There are no current impacts on Amtrak service, Mayor Mamdani confirmed. He noted that his team is in contact with Amtrak officials “as they investigate this incident.”
After facing the possibility of a disastrous road trip following their initial defeats in Seattle last week, the Mets managed to turn the tide. They emerged victorious in three out of four games, sparking some hope as they return to Citi Field to take on the Cardinals and Braves. Currently sitting at 29-36, the Mets find themselves only five games out of the third wild-card position in a somewhat disorganized National League, trailing the division frontrunners.
As they contemplate their strategy for the upcoming trade deadline, the Mets are confronted with several critical questions:
By Saturday, the Mets will need to introduce a fifth starter into their rotation. Kodai Senga will not be among the contenders this time, as he is set to start for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. The team’s management is keen to see performance improvements from the rehabbing right-hander, who has been battling issues with control.
What is the state of the starting rotation?
The Mets will need a fifth starter no later than Saturday. The options this turn through the rotation won’t include Kodai Senga, who is scheduled to pitch for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. Team officials want results from the rehabbing right-hander, who has struggled with control.
In the timeless “Masters of the Universe” saga, Adam, also known as He-Man, always managed to tackle any danger lurking in the mystical realm of Eternia. Whether it was Skeletor or another villain, He-Man was up to the challenge. However, even this legendary character from Mattel struggled to overcome his biggest adversary: audience indifference. Returning to theaters under the direction of Travis Knight, “Masters of the Universe” stumbled right out of the gate. With a hefty production budget of $170 million, the film only managed to rake in $29.43 million domestically on its opening weekend. Internationally, it fared no better, with a disappointing $24.65 million, indicating that global audiences were unlikely to salvage its fortunes.
Amazon MGM Studios
In North America, the film’s launch was overshadowed by the openings of other notorious box office flops like “John Carter,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Even trailing behind the debut of “Daddy’s Home 2” signaled troubling prospects for its profitability. Many predicted “Masters of the Universe” would be 2026’s most predictable box office failure, with a multitude of factors contributing to its lackluster performance, evident long before it hit theaters.
The reasons behind this outcome suggest that a contemporary, expensive live-action interpretation of “Masters of the Universe” was destined to struggle financially. Not even He-Man’s legendary strength could rescue this film from its box office woes.
“Masters of the Universe” drew inspiration from a 1980s Filmation animated series that once captivated children. Back in its heyday, the characters of Eternia were so popular that He-Man’s companion Orko even teamed up with Alan Thicke in a video aimed at helping kids deal with divorce. The producers, including Amazon MGM Studios, banked on Travis Knight’s live-action adaptation capturing the hearts of a new wave of young viewers.
These expectations were dashed as soon as the opening weekend numbers rolled in. A mere 4% of the initial audience was under 12 years old. This 2026 summer release primarily attracted nostalgic adults rather than engaging a fresh, young audience. While recent hits like the “Backrooms” film captivated Gen Z and Gen Alpha, making them box office sensations, “Masters of the Universe” found its appeal largely limited to older fans already familiar with Eternia.
Lack of appeal to kids
Amazon MGM Studios
“Masters of the Universe” is a based largely on a 1980s Filmation cartoon that appealed to youngsters back then. Eternia’s denizens were once so beloved that He-Man’s sidekick Orko even showed up with Alan Thicke in a video to help kids cope with divorce. Amazon MGM Studios and the other financiers behind Travis Knight’s live-action film adaptation clearly hoped that a new generation of kids would fall in love with He-Man and friends.
Those hopes were obliterated the moment the opening night box office data came in. Only 4% of the debut audience was under the age of 12. This 2026 summertime title was resonating almost exclusively with nostalgic adults rather than a new generation of young fans. While recent triumphs like the “Backrooms” movie blew everyone away at the box office by being must-see titles for Gen Z and Gen Alpha moviegoers, “Masters of the Universe” had limited appeal to pre-existing, older Eternia devotees.
This ensured that “Masters of the Universe” had an extremely restricted audience to draw from. With this massive drawback, it’s no wonder it couldn’t go far at the box office.
Masters of the Universe cost too much to make
Amazon MGM Studios
The 2020s have delivered many of the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, with titles like “Thunderbolts*” falling short of expectations because of, among other problems, the international box office markets significantly shrinking. Big-budget action films full of CG and fan-service just aren’t bringing in $400+ million overseas anymore. Even non-MCU 2010s tentpoles like “Terminator: Genisys” or “Pacific Rim” grossing $300+ million internationally are non-existent today. Budgets that would’ve been reasonable in 2017 or 2018 are a financial death sentence in 2026. This reality ended up biting “Masters of the Universe,” which cost $170 million to produce.
That figure was always daunting for a feature kicking off rather than continuing a franchise. For comparison’s sake, 2007’s “Transformers” cost $151 million, while “Spider-Man: Far From Home” was made for $160 million. Still, a decade before its debut, “Masters of the Universe” might’ve had a shot at nearly doubling that price tag with a likely $400+ million worldwide gross. In the 2020s, though, even MCU movies aren’t hitting that mark globally anymore, leaving “Masters of the Universe” with an even greater uphill climb to profitability.
In other words, Amazon MGM Studios’ exorbitant budget basically guaranteed “Masters of the Universe” couldn’t thrive financially in 2026.
Toy movies have a mixed box office track record
Amazon MGM Studios
In September 2018, Mattel Films was launched as a division that could produce motion pictures based on properties, such as “Masters of the Universe.” In the nearly decade since its launch, only two films, “Barbie” and “Masters of the Universe,” have emerged from the label. The long history of movies based on toys that never happened speaks to how difficult it is translating childhood fixtures into silver screen attractions. Motion pictures based on toys have a mixed box office track record, which didn’t help a movie like “Masters of the Universe” that needed all the breaks it could get.
While several “Transformers” installments, “The Lego Movie,” and 2023’s “Barbie” were box office smashes, they’re major exceptions to the rule. “Snake Eyes,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Max Steel,” “Battleship,” “Bratz: The Movie,” “Ugly Dolls, “Playmobil: The Movie”– the list goes on. These financial failures had far greater issues to contend with than their source material, but coming from the world of toys certainly didn’t help.
Rather than becoming another “Barbie” or “Lego Movie” exception, “Masters of the Universe” was yet another box office misfire for toy movie adaptations. No wonder Mattel Films has been so stagnant given this financial track record.
Fantasy movies can be a tough sell for general audiences
Amazon MGM Studios
While Middle Earth, Harry Potter, and Disney live-action remakes tend to do massive numbers, countless fantasy movies lacking these brand names often bomb hard at the box office. Just ask the various 21st century “King Arthur” films, “Eragon,” “Mortal Engines,” “Pan,” and countless other titles. For so many general audiences, fantasy looks like a bunch of “nerdy stuff” involving swords and castles.
The perception that had previously capsized “Jack the Giant Slayer” and “Dolittle” struck again with “Masters of the Universe.” For many, swords and sorcery material is either too old-fashioned or thematically inaccessible. The sagas of Frodo Baggins and Harry Potter are the exceptions that highlight how often fantasy movies come up short financially. Not even the well reviewed 2023 feature “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” could upend this box office standard.
With fantasy movies so often stuck in a box office rut, “Masters of the Universe,” a maximalist entry into this genre, was long destined to follow in the footsteps of “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” and “The BFG.” Not even the Sword of Power could shatter this box office trend.
Jared Leto’s terrible luck at the 2020s box office continues
Amazon MGM Studios
Few actors in the 2020s have had the rotten box office luck of Jared Leto. Everywhere this Oscar-winning performer turns, financial turmoil follows. His 2021 crime drama “The Little Things” flopping could at least be chalked up partially to its simultaneous HBO Max premiere and the few theaters open at the time. Every other 2020s Leto feature, though, has had no such excuses. “Morbius,” for instance, was a box office trainwreck. “Haunted Mansion,” which featured Leto as The Hatbox Ghost, was also a non-starter in theaters.
As late as October 2025, “Tron: Ares” bombed at the box office, solidifying the modern perception of Leto’s box office prowess. Any motion picture that Leto headlines in the 2020s now appeared destined for box office disaster. While Leto’s name wasn’t prominently featured in the movie’s advertising, his major presence in the film as Skeletor was still widely known and openly talked about in pre-release interviews. Thus, “Universe” couldn’t elude the bad luck that Leto-connected movies have endured.
Ironically, whereas he was totally snoozing through “Tron: Ares” and “Morbius,” Leto’s go-for-broke wickedness in his Skeletor performance is one of the major highlights of “Masters of the Universe.” However, his recent abysmal box office track record claimed another costly victim with this Mattel adaptation.

Retiring Australians could need $400,000 of superannuation to live comfortably, according to a study.
Gender inequity, investment strategies and market health are major factors in superannuation depletion.
New research highlights a concerning trend for retirees with superannuation balances below $250,000, revealing that their savings could be depleted within just ten years of comfortable living. This is especially alarming for women, who may face more significant financial challenges.
Conducted by the Monash Centre for Financial Studies, the study points to the challenges retirees encounter amid fluctuating markets, increasing life spans, and rising living costs. These factors are forcing many retirees to make tough financial decisions.
Associate Professor Ummul Ruthbah, contributing author of the report titled “Comfort or Collapse: Why Balance Size and Design, Not Just Returns, Decide Retirement,” described the findings as “sobering.”
The study highlights three critical factors for maintaining superannuation: the initial balance size, the allocation between equities and bonds, and the market return sequence during the first year of retirement.
The research concluded that with a starting superannuation balance exceeding $400,000, retirees could almost certainly maintain their income, irrespective of how their portfolio is structured.

Super gender gap has ‘profound implications’
The report has added weight to concerns about a gender gap in the size of superannuation accounts.
Women approaching retirement age may have up to 30 per cent less superannuation than their male counterparts. On average, women have a balance of $212,000, compared to $283,000 for men.
Ruthbah said the super gender gap has “profound implications for retirement adequacy and policy design”.
“For median female retirees, even a balanced portfolio still carries material chances of exhaustion within a decade, while men with median savings face far more secure outcomes,” she said.
Ruthbah said the research emphasises the need for “measures to boost women’s superannuation savings“.
“Whether through targeted contribution incentives, reforms to address career breaks and pay disparities, or enhancements to the Age Pension safety net.”
CEO of not-for-profit Women in Super, Jo Kowalczyk, told SBS that entering retirement with lower superannuation balances means women are vulnerable to financial shocks and “the risk that their savings may not last as long as they need them to”.
She said the findings are particularly important as they show the “real world consequences of the gender super pay gap”.
“For many women, lower lifetime earnings, time spent out of the workforce undertaking unpaid caring responsibilities, and the ongoing gender pay gap continue to have a lasting impact on retirement savings.”
“This research reinforces why closing the gender super gap matters. It is not simply about the size of a superannuation account balance — it is about ensuring women have the financial security, independence and dignity to enjoy a comfortable retirement.”
Tips for super sustainability
The study found superannuation depletion isn’t impacted by portfolio design and challenged assumptions about retirement investment strategies.
Trinh Le, the report’s other author, said: “Mixed equity-bond portfolios, which are investment strategies combining stocks (equities) and bonds (fixed income), provide the most consistent outcomes for modest balances”.
“All-equity strategies deliver higher average ending balances but carry sharper drawdown risks, while bond-heavy portfolios virtually guarantee capital erosion when withdrawals are set at comfortable levels,” Le said.
The report also concluded that, regardless of investment strategy, a small super account won’t sustain high spending in retirement.
It also warned that if those with large accounts invested their money too conservatively, inflation would shrink its value, and suggested moderate spending could be the sweet spot.
“Our study finds that when retirees target a moderate level of spending, rather than a more comfortable lifestyle, the portfolio is more likely to remain sustainable over ten years, regardless of the asset allocation,” Ruthbah said.
“Another important consideration is maintaining some exposure to equities. Our capital market assumptions suggest that bond-only portfolios are unlikely to generate optimal returns relative to the level of risk taken over the long term.”
The study analysed 11 portfolios that ranged from 100 per cent equities to 100 per cent fixed income, in increments of 10 percentage points. Portfolio balances ranged from $100,000 to $1 million, and focused on projected 2025 mean and median balances for Australians aged between 63 and 67.
A matter of timing
The timing of one’s retirement could also be crucial, with the research suggesting that retiring during a market downturn came with real costs.
For instance, someone who retired in 2022, when the market delivered negative equity and fixed income returns, was likely to be significantly worse off after a decade than someone who retired a year later in 2023 — even when their superannuation balance and investment strategy are the same, the report found.
The report suggested that, during periods of market decline, retirees should avoid, postpone, or reduce withdrawals from their superannuation and consider a flexible withdrawal strategy that adjusts to market conditions and personal needs rather than a fixed withdrawal rate.
The federal government’s financial literacy tool, Moneysmart, suggests growing superannuation savings through voluntary contributions, investing, salary sacrificing, downsizer contributions if selling a home, and exploring options for government co-contributions.

A beloved canine celebrity from social media met a tragic end, reportedly being turned into a meal at a restaurant in China after being abducted from its owner’s farm.
Guo, a well-known travel influencer in China, and his eight-year-old Border Collie named Chutou, had captured the hearts of over 1.5 million followers on Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok.
Chutou was a loyal companion to Guo, joining him on countless adventures across the country. From snowy mountain camps to desert treks, Chutou was known for vigilantly watching over his owner’s tent at night.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, Guo had recently set out on a solo road trip to Georgia, leaving Chutou in the care of his parents.
The dog mysteriously vanished on May 11. Surveillance footage reportedly captured two unidentified individuals whisking Chutou away on an electric bike.
On May 26, Guo – who had returned to China to search for the dog – located the man accused of stealing Chutou, and purportedly offered him 10,000 yuan (£1,100) for the animal’s return.
The man said he mistook Chutou for a stray, SCMP claimed, but Guo refused the explanation – highlighting that the dog had been wearing a collar and GPS tracker.
Guo was later told that Chutou had been sold to a restaurant serving dog meat for 180 yuan (£20), and that his loving pet had been eaten, according to the outlet.
Guo, a travel influencer from Henan province, regularly documented his travels with Chutou after buying him in 2018 from a street vendor as a puppy
The canine accompanied his owner for years on journeys across China, from camping trips on snowy mountains to deserts, often guarding him outside his tent at night
Chutou purportedly went missing on May 11 and was later sold to a restaurant as dog meat, according to South China Morning Post (SCMP)
‘The dog is dead, so stop making a fuss. I did not break the law,’ the man who allegedly sold the dog said, according to SCMP.
Guo apparently confronted the restaurant worker who slaughtered Chutou, hoping to recover his remains or fur.
‘The hair was thrown in the rubbish long ago,’ the butcher allegedly replied.
Guo first bought Chutou in 2018 from a street vendor, paying over 2,000 yuan (£221) when the puppy was just three months old.
The dog became known for his intelligence, energy and gentle temperament across videos he appeared in on social media.
A devastated Guo purportedly reported the incident to the police and submitted evidence of Chutou’s market value, hoping the case would lead to criminal charges.
Police in Ningling County in Henan province have opened an investigation, according to the outlet HK01.
The case sparked widespread outrage online, renewing debate over China’s dog meat trade.
One social media user wrote: ‘I cried while watching Chutou’s old videos. Such a bright, living soul ended so tragically.
‘Those who stole, killed and ate him must pay.’
Guo and Chutou amassed more than 1.5 million followers on Chinese social media

While some Chinese cities have banned the consumption of dogs and cats, the country has no comprehensive national companion-animal protection law, meaning pets are generally treated as property.
Approximately 10 million dogs and four million cats are killed each year in China for human consumption, according to Humane World for Animals.
A 2017 survey revealed that even in Yulin, home of the notorious dog meat festival, 72 per cent of people don’t regularly eat dog meat despite efforts by dog meat traders to promote it.
A nationwide survey conducted in 2016 found that 64 per cent of Chinese citizens wanted to see an end to the Yulin festival and more than half think the dog meat trade should be completely banned.
The majority of those polled, 69.5 per cent, have never eaten dog meat.
A fitness expert reveals five effective exercises you can do in bed to combat waist thickening and enhance core strength post-60.
Waist thickening often creeps up on you. One moment your waistline seems unchanged, and the next, your pants fit differently, your core feels less toned, and your lower belly and sides soften noticeably. After the age of 60, this transformation is usually due to a combination of reduced daily activity, gradual muscle decline, hormonal fluctuations, and increased time spent sitting—more than your core would prefer.
While crunches may ignite a burning sensation in your abs, they aren’t the complete solution. Repeatedly performing a singular movement won’t necessarily trim your waist. Shedding fat requires maintaining a calorie deficit, which is achieved by expending more calories than consumed over time. Nevertheless, core exercises are crucial as they strengthen your abs, obliques, hips, and deep core muscles, helping your midsection feel firmer and more supported as your body composition improves.
I recommend incorporating bed exercises to achieve this goal because they offer a simple way to increase quality movement without turning your day into a marathon of workout sessions. These exercises can be done before you get out of bed in the morning or before settling in for the night. Although the setup is straightforward, these exercises effectively engage your core by requiring it to brace, rotate, resist movement, and control your hips, making them more beneficial than basic crunches.
I like bed exercises for this goal because they give you a simple way to add more quality movement without making the day feel like it needs another workout appointment. You can do them before your feet hit the floor or before you wind down at night. The setup feels easy, but the right exercises still ask your core to brace, rotate, resist movement, and control your hips. That’s where they beat basic crunches.
These five moves train your lower abs, obliques, deep core, hips, and glutes from a supported position. Keep the reps slow, make the muscles do the work, and treat the bed like your built-in reminder to sneak in a few focused minutes.
Dead Bugs
Dead bugs train your lower abs and deep core while your arms and legs move away from your body. Your midsection has to keep your ribs and pelvis steady, which helps tighten the area around your waist better than crunches that only flex your spine. The movement also teaches your core to stay active while your limbs move, which carries over to walking, lifting, reaching, and getting out of bed with more control. Move slowly and keep your lower back gently pressed into the bed.
Muscles Trained: Lower abs, deep core, hip flexors, shoulders
How to Do It:
Lie on your back with your arms reaching toward the ceiling.
Lift your knees over your hips and bend them to 90 degrees.
Press your lower back gently into the bed.
Extend your right arm and left leg away from your body.
Return to the starting position with control.
Repeat on the opposite side.
Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.
Best Variations: Heel-tap dead bugs, same-side dead bugs, paused dead bugs
Form Tip: Move only as far as you can while keeping your lower back set.
Side Plank Holds
Side plank holds train your obliques, deep core, shoulders, and outer hips while your waist fights gravity. The muscles along the sides of your midsection have to stay engaged for the full hold, which makes side planks a strong choice for firming and thickening. Crunches mainly hit the front of your abs, while side planks build the side-body strength that helps your waist feel more supported. Start with the bent-knee version if the full hold feels too aggressive.
Lie on your side with your forearm under your shoulder.
Stack your feet or stagger them for more support.
Brace your core and lift your hips off the bed.
Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
Hold the position while breathing steadily.
Lower with control, then switch sides.
Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.
Best Variations: Bent-knee side plank, staggered-feet side plank, side plank with top-leg lift
Form Tip: Press your forearm into the bed and keep your hips lifted.
Heel Taps
Heel taps train your lower abs by making your core control one leg at a time. As your heel lowers, your pelvis tends to tip forward, and your midsection has to stop it. That control helps your waist feel tighter because your core learns how to hold position instead of relying on momentum. Compared with crunches, heel taps do a better job of teaching the lower belly and deep core to work together.
Muscles Trained: Lower abs, deep core, hip flexors
How to Do It:
Lie on your back with your knees bent over your hips.
Press your lower back gently into the bed.
Brace your core before moving your legs.
Lower one heel toward the bed with control.
Tap your heel lightly without relaxing your core.
Bring your leg back up and switch sides.
Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.
Form Tip: Lower your heel only as far as your core can control.
Glute Bridge Marches
Glute bridge marches train your glutes, hamstrings, lower abs, and core while your hips stay lifted. Every time one foot leaves the bed, your waist and pelvis have to stay steady instead of shifting side to side. That makes the movement useful for flattening waist thickening because your core and hips learn to work together. Stronger glutes also help your posture and pelvic position, which can make your midsection feel more supported during the day.
Form Tip: Keep your hips level as each foot lifts.
Bent-Knee Windshield Wipers
Bent-knee windshield wipers train your obliques and deep core while your hips rotate side to side. Your waist has to control the motion as your knees move, building strength in the muscles that help shape and support your midsection. The bent-knee setup keeps the exercise more manageable than straight-leg versions while still giving your obliques real work. Keep the range small at first and let your core guide the movement.
Muscles Trained: Obliques, lower abs, deep core, hips
How to Do It:
Lie on your back with your knees bent over your hips.
Extend your arms out to your sides for support.
Brace your core and keep your shoulders on the bed.
Lower your knees toward one side with control.
Bring your knees back to center.
Lower your knees toward the opposite side and continue alternating.
Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.
Best Variations: Short-range wipers, slower wipers, feet-on-bed knee drops
Form Tip: Keep your shoulders down and move only as far as your waist can control.
How to Make Bed Core Work Help Your Waist

Flattening waist thickening takes more than a few ab exercises, but the right core work can help your midsection feel stronger, tighter, and more connected. Bed exercises make consistency easier because the routine has almost no setup. The key is staying controlled, keeping tension in the right muscles, and pairing the work with habits that support overall fat loss.
Remember how fat loss works: Your waist changes as overall body fat trends down. Keep meals protein-focused, watch portions, and aim for a steady calorie deficit instead of chasing quick fixes.
Train your core beyond crunches: Dead bugs, heel taps, side planks, and windshield wipers teach your abs and obliques to brace, rotate, and control your pelvis. That gives your waist more useful strength.
Slow every rep down: Bed exercises lose value when your legs swing or your hips bounce. Slower reps keep tension in your lower abs and obliques longer.
Keep your hips involved: Glute bridge marches help your core and hips work together. Stronger hips can improve posture and make your midsection feel more supported.
Move more during the day: Walking, stairs, chores, and short movement breaks all add to calorie burn. Those small pieces matter when waist fat is the goal.
A flatter waist after 60 usually starts with a stronger, more responsive core and a routine you can repeat. Use these bed exercises as a low-friction way to build that consistency, then let daily movement and nutrition handle the body-composition side of the equation.
