Much of Australia will have a day off in celebration of the King’s Birthday on Monday.
However, two states will mark the occasion later in the year.
Most Australians will enjoy a day off this Monday in celebration of the King’s Birthday.
However, residents of Queensland and Western Australia will have to wait a bit longer for their extended weekend.
In the ACT, New South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria, the public holiday on June 8 marks the long weekend.
Why do some states differ?
For Queensland, the King’s Birthday holiday is scheduled for the first Monday of October, which is October 5 this year.
Stay informed with reliable news updates and analysis delivered directly to your inbox every day.
The Queensland government moved the public holiday in 2015 so that public holidays would be better spread out throughout the year.
Most of Western Australia marks the public holiday on 28 September.
However, the City of Karratha and town of Port Hedland will observe it on 3 August due to the timing of local events.
Western Australia has long celebrated the monarch’s birth — previously the Queen’s Birthday — later in the year to coincide with the Perth Royal Show and to space it out from another public holiday in June.
When is the king’s actual birthday?
King Charles III was born on 14 November, 1948. His late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was born on 21 April, 1926.
The public holiday was renamed after the queen’s death, but the dates remained the same.
The monarch’s birthday has traditionally been celebrated in June or sometimes May in the UK, so that the outdoor celebrations were more likely to coincide with better weather.
June is the first month of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
There is typically a Saturday military parade in London called Trooping the Colour for the birthday event.
This year’s parade will be held on 13 June.
According to the British royal family’s website, the queen would typically spend her actual birthday privately.
Australia celebrates the sovereign’s birthday because Australia is a constitutional monarchy, and as head of the British Commonwealth, King Charles is Australia’s head of state.
Many other Commonwealth countries celebrate the monarch’s birthday, including New Zealand, Canada and Papua New Guinea.
The Avengers are set to take on a new form, this time in the world of trading card games! The beloved franchise has teamed up with “Magic: The Gathering” to introduce a thrilling crossover that will delight fans of both universes. This collaboration brings Marvel’s iconic heroes into the card game, complete with fresh cards and artwork crafted by talented Marvel comic artists.
To mark this exciting launch, Wizards of the Coast, the creators of “Magic: The Gathering,” hosted a lively fan event. The celebration was filled with themed photo opportunities and gave fans a chance to experience hands-on gameplay featuring the new Marvel set.
Among the enthusiasts of this strategic card game is U.S. figure skater and Olympic gold medalist Amber Glenn. Glenn has long been a fan of “Magic: The Gathering,” finding it to be a peaceful escape amid the pressures of international competition.
Expressing her joy, Glenn shared with On The Red Carpet, “It’s been skating, skating, skating non-stop for a while, so having the chance to engage in something different is truly exciting. I’m thrilled that one of my cherished hobbies is getting this level of public attention and exploration.”
“It has been skating, skating, skating non-stop for a while so to get to do something outside of it, is really, really exciting and I’m so glad that one of my hobbies, something I really truly enjoy got to be so public and it got to be explored more,” she told On The Red Carpet.
Longtime player and collector Leonard Williams already knows who’s leading his lineup.
“I’m definitely looking forward to starting a deck with Thor,” he said.
For head designer Mark Rosewater, the collaboration was a dream come true.
“Our art department had a goal that we wanted a certain percentage of artists that actually did Marvel comics,” he said.
“So many artists were so excited, we blew past our goal, that they were very excited that they were able to make a “Magic” card. “Magic” is all about great art, Marvel is all about great art, so it was a perfect marriage.”
The new “Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Superheroes” set launches June 26.
Roki Sasaki has proven that his previous performance was no accident.
On Friday night, Sasaki once again reached speeds of 100 mph, mirroring the velocity exhibited in his last outing.
During seven scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ narrow 1-0 win over the Angels at Uniqlo Field, his fastball consistently averaged an impressive 98.3 mph.
Sasaki managed to maintain the momentum from his previous start, where his fastball clocked an average of 98.5 mph.
It appears that Sasaki has successfully rediscovered the form of his powerful fastball.
Sasaki’s 10-strikeout performance positioned the Dodgers to claim a victory on a walk-off home run by Freddie Freeman.
Freeman’s homer was the Dodgers’ third hit of the night.
Sasaki is trending in a promising direction. He is 2-0 with a 1.50 earned-run average over his last four starts.
His upswing began with a win over the Angels in Anaheim in which he limited the Angels to a run over seven innings on May 17.
However, how he pitched then and how he pitched on Friday night was entirely different. In that victory at Angel Stadium, Sasaki’s fastball averaged only 96.6 mph.
What it means
The two teams that are closest to the Dodgers in the National League West both lost. The second-place Diamondbacks, who are now 7 ¹/₂ games behind Los Angeles, dropping a 14-1 decision to the Washington Nationals while the third-place San Diego Padres (eight games out of first) lost 5-0 to the Mets.
Who’s hot
The Dodgers entered the game ranking second in the majors in defensive runs saved, according to FanGraphs, and their fielders made some spectacular plays behind Sasaki.
The most memorable being one by second baseman Miguel Rojas, who picked up a ball that deflected off the pitcher’s glove with his bare hand and made a throw across his body in the third inning.
The inning ended with another highlight-worthy play in which shortstop Mookie Betts flipped the ball out of his glove to Rojas at second for a force out.
Who’s not
Just as Shohei Ohtani was starting to look as if he could make a run at the batting title, he went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts to snap a seven-game hitting streak. He also failed to reach base for the first time since May 11.
Up next
The Dodgers’ three-game series against the Angels will continue on Saturday with Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-4, 2.86) taking on Angels right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (2-4, 5.23).
The United States, alongside other member nations of the Shield of the Americas, issued a strong condemnation on Friday against what they describe as “ongoing efforts” in Bolivia to destabilize the “legitimately and overwhelmingly elected” government of President Rodrigo Paz.
“The countries within the Shield of the Americas stand united in denouncing attempts to unseat the legitimately and overwhelmingly elected government of President Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia,” the statement declared. “We stand in solidarity with President Paz’s democratic administration as it confronts efforts to undermine Bolivia’s progress through deceptive road blockades that jeopardize the delivery of essential food, medicine, and supplies to its citizens.”
The statement further emphasized that “mob rule cannot substitute the choice made by a majority of Bolivians at the ballot box, which aimed to leave behind two decades of corrupt governance.”
Additionally, the declaration urged accountability for those financing protests with “dirty money” from drug trafficking and transnational crime, warning, “Those with legitimate grievances should seize the opportunity for dialogue offered by the government and reject those exploiting their causes for a return to power.”

The State Department made the joint statement along with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The statement comes as Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, has been rocked by weeks of social unrest as mass protests have blocked streets in major cities amid economic inflation and rising fuel prices.
Bolivian Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resigned Tuesday.
Upon taking office, Paz supported a land reform bill to boost agribusiness that Indigenous farmers said put them at risk of eviction. He further scrapped fuel subsidies, sending prices surging by nearly 90%. Motorists complained that the gasoline was contaminated and ruined their cars.
The Trump administration has said drug traffickers are responsible for inciting the mass unrest.
Meanwhile, former President Evo Morales of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, the country’s first Indigenous president who ruled for an unprecedented 14 years, is calling for early elections. “Paz only has two paths left: a suicidal decision like militarization or … an election in the next 90 days,” he wrote on X.

For almost two years now, Morales has been hiding out in Bolivia’s central coca-growing Chapare region, evading an arrest warrant on human trafficking charges relating to allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl. He rejects the allegations as politically motivated.

On Thursday, War Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a post on X, that the War Department and the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C), a recently established multinational military and political alliance, reject all attempts to overthrow the government of Rodrigo Paz Pereira six months into his term.

“The United States is watching. Bolivia must not allow itself to fall prey to the old status quo of narco-terrorist dominance in the region,” Hegseth wrote. “We will continue to support our A3C partners like Bolivia to ensure that narco-terrorists are deterred from profiting on death and destruction in our hemisphere.”
Martin Short’s adoptive sons, Oliver and Henry, have faced profound loss in their lives. As they reached adulthood, they endured the heartbreak of losing their mother, Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer. According to Broadway World, Dolman battled the disease for three years before passing away. The impact of her death lingered with the brothers long after. In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Martin reflected, “It’s been a tough two years for my children. Life has a way of challenging our denial about loss, and when it happens, we both gain and suffer. It’s never a surprise.”

The brothers’ resilience was tested again when their sister, Katherine Short, tragically took her own life in February 2026. “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the family’s representative stated, as reported by ABC News. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy. Katherine was cherished by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.” Katherine was 42 years old.
Nicki Swift consulted Dr. Sanam Hafeez, an NYC neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind, who offered insights on how Martin could support his sons. “Martin Short can best support Oliver and Henry by creating a safe, open space where grief is acknowledged rather than avoided,” Dr. Hafeez advised.
The most supportive action Martin can take for his sons, Henry and Oliver, is to allow them the space to grieve. “Having all experienced these losses together, the mourning process is collective, and openly discussing their loved ones can be profoundly healing,” Dr. Hafeez told Nicki Swift. She added, “Short can encourage honest conversations, share memories, and assure his sons that all emotions are valid.” By demonstrating emotional openness himself, Martin shows that grief is not a weakness but a testament to their deep love, fostering healing for all involved.
Dr. Hafeez emphasized the importance of Martin caring for his own wellbeing. “He cannot pour from an empty cup, so attending to his mental and emotional health is crucial for being there for his sons,” she explained. This support might involve therapy, connecting with friends, or immersing himself in his career, which he finds “deeply joyful.” Dr. Hafeez also mentioned Martin’s use of humor to navigate past tragedies, including the losses of his wife and parents. “By modeling healthy coping mechanisms such as seeking support, maintaining connections, and finding meaning, he provides his sons with a living example of how to endure profound loss with grace and resilience.”

The best thing that Martin Short can do for his sons, Henry Short and Oliver Short, is give them room to grieve. “Since all three have experienced these losses together, first Nancy, now Katherine, their mourning is collective, and speaking openly about the people they’ve loved and lost can be deeply healing,” Dr. Sanam Hafeez told Nicki Swift. “Short can initiate honest conversations, share memories, and let his sons know that no emotion is off-limits or inappropriate.” She continued, “By modeling emotional vulnerability himself, he teaches his sons that grief is not a sign of weakness but an expression of how profoundly they loved. This will overall make everyone feel better.”
Dr. Hafeez also stressed the importance of Martin prioritizing his own well-being. “Short cannot pour from an empty cup, and investing in his own mental and emotional health is not selfish but rather essential to being present for his boys,” she explained. This could look like a number of things, from therapy and fellowship with friends to diving into the career he has described as “deeply joyful.” Hafeez also cited Martin’s quotes about leaning on humor to get through past tragedies, including the death of his wife as well as his own parents. “By modeling healthy coping such as seeking help, staying connected, and finding meaning, he gives his sons a living example of how to survive profound loss with grace and resilience.”
Fortunately, the family appears to be leaning on each other. The brothers accompanied Martin to the premiere of his “Marty, Life Is Short” Netflix documentary in May 2026, months after the comedian joined the ranks of celebrities who have lost children far too young.
Hollywood luminaries Timothée Chalamet and Ben Stiller took center stage in the jubilant celebrations at the Frost Bank Center on Friday night, as the New York Knicks edged closer to a historic triumph in basketball.
The Knicks are now just steps away from clinching their first NBA championship since 1973, after narrowly defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-104 in a nail-biting Game 2, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
The excitement was palpable among their celebrity supporters, who couldn’t contain their joy after witnessing New York’s hard-fought victory on the road. Captured footage shows the duo celebrating exuberantly backstage on Friday.
Chalamet, famed for his role in ‘Marty Supreme,’ was spotted embracing staff and enthusiastically high-fiving fans as he exited the arena. He then bumped into Stiller, and the two shared a celebratory hug.
Following the game’s conclusion, Chalamet eagerly took to social media to share his excitement, posting a video from inside a limousine with New York rapper Fat Joe as they reveled in the triumph.
There was no sign of Chalamet’s girlfriend, Kylie Jenner – who was recently seen partying in Turks and Caicos – but she did share a post celebrating the victory on her Instagram story, proving that that she was keeping up with the action from abroad.

Chalamet and Stiller, regular fixtures courtside at Madison Square Garden, traveled down to Texas to back their beloved franchise through the opening leg of the series.
Meanwhile, back in New York, fellow filmmaker Spike Lee was seen leading the celebrations as he drove through huge crowds of jubilant Knicks fans.
On the night, Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds, as New York showed the quality that has carried them throughout the playoffs.
Mikal Bridges was superb in support, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding six assists and six rebounds in another impressive all-round display.
Knicks star Jalen Brunson was not at his sharpest, shooting 7-of-25 from the field, but still found ways to contribute with 20 points, six assists and five steals.
Victor Wembanyama gave San Antonio everything he had – with 29 points and nine rebounds – but the Spurs were unable to secure the win they so desperately needed.
De’Aaron Fox added 20 points and five assists for the Spurs, who led by as many as 12 in the first quarter before New York outscored them in the final three periods.
Devin Vassell contributed 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Spurs, but it was not enough as New York’s collective resolve proved the difference.
It follows a dramatic Game 1 in which the Knicks trailed early after Brunson hurt his knee in the first quarter, only to storm back and win 105-95.
The Knicks previously swept Cleveland 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals and have now won 13-straight playoff games.

New York entered this postseason as a third seed, dismissed by many as contenders.
However, they have beaten Atlanta, Philadelphia and Cleveland without breaking sweat, and now lead the Spurs 2-0 as they head back to New York for Game 3.
The franchise last won the championship in 1973 – the year of Frazier, Reed and DeBusschere. A city that has endured 53 years of near-misses now dares to dream in a way it has not done in a generation.
The series now moves to Madison Square Garden, where President Donald Trump will attend Game 3 on Monday.
Trump was personally invited by Knicks owner James Dolan. NBA commissioner Adam Silver welcomed the visit, calling Trump a lifelong Knicks fan who attended multiple NBA drafts at the Garden in earlier years.
Fans are advised to arrive two hours early due to the Secret Service security operation. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani will also attend, though in a separate section from the president.
Tickets for Game 3 are among the hottest in recent sporting memory, with minimum get-in prices reported at over $8,000.
A man recently sparked a lively debate by recounting a childhood incident that reshaped his views on respect, gratitude, and familial traditions.
In his story, he shared how one of his first encounters with cultural differences occurred during his youth. This happened when he visited friends’ homes and was introduced to a custom that was entirely new to him.
He observed that his friends routinely expressed thanks to their parents after meals, a habit he realized was never instilled in him.
Childhood experience that triggered reflection
Reflecting on the experience, the man explained that in his upbringing, thanking his parents for meals seemed unnecessary or even considered inappropriate.
This revelation left him feeling bewildered and uneasy, particularly since this gesture was a common practice in the homes he visited.
In his narration, he linked the act of thanking parents after eating to a power imbalance, suggesting that gratitude in such a setting symbolised subservience rather than respect.
The experience, he said, stayed with him long after childhood and shaped his views on parenting and family dynamics.
Statement fuels wider social debate
Sharing his thoughts, the man declared, “Only slaves say thank you to their masters after eating.” The statement quickly gained attention online, drawing mixed reactions from readers who weighed in on the cultural and moral implications.
While some agreed with his perspective, arguing that parents have a duty to provide for their children without expecting thanks, others strongly disagreed.
Critics countered that expressing gratitude teaches humility, respect, and emotional intelligence, rather than submission.
The post has since sparked broader discussions about Nigerian parenting styles, cultural differences across homes, and how everyday practices influence children’s values.
As the debate continues online, many users note that the conversation reflects deeper questions about authority, upbringing, and what gratitude truly represents within the family setting.
In a shocking incident captured on video, a 70-year-old Massachusetts resident stands accused of attempting to drown a young man during a heated dispute over a jet ski at a local lake. The altercation, which unfolded at a community boat ramp on Lake Maspenock in Hopkinton, Mass., has led to serious charges against the elderly man.
Authorities have charged Steven Dana with attempted murder, strangulation, and assault and battery on a disabled person. The victim, 21-year-old Matthew Duffy, was allegedly attacked while using the lake facilities with his friends. Duffy, who has been reliant on crutches due to injuries from a previous accident, found himself at the center of Dana’s ire.
The conflict reportedly began when Dana, who lives on the lake, took issue with the noise generated by the jet ski. His objections quickly escalated, and he attempted to force Duffy and his companions out of the water, as per the police report accessed by local news channel WCVB.
The entire confrontation was inadvertently documented by Duffy’s group. Armed with a GoPro, they captured Dana’s mounting frustration and the subsequent altercation. This footage has become a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The group of friends had been recording the interaction with Dana on a GoPro when the older man became increasingly upset during the confrontation with Duffy, according to the video obtained by the outlet.
“Let me have fun with my jetski,” Duffy told Dana, who told the younger man to take the craft to another lake.
Duffy refused and claimed he lived nearby and was allowed to use the lake. Some of the younger lake users began to egg Dana on, saying, “You’re not going to do s–t.”
Dana threatened to call the police “again” before asking if Duffy wanted “me to shoot you.”
The older man walked down to Duffy, who had been standing at the lakeside, and got into the 21-year-old’s face.
“Are you going to beat up a cripple?” one of Duffy’s friends asked the heated man.
“I don’t care, I’ll take a cripple.” Dana said, according to the video.
Dana slapped Duffy across the face before the two grappled each other and fell into the lake, as one of Duffy’s friends drove off with the jet ski.
Dana was filmed allegedly holding Duffy under the water as three other men showed up and separated the pair.
“I was so scared for my life because I can’t fight back, I broke practically everything and this guy’s on top of me under the water, I can’t see what’s going on, I can’t fight back,” Duffy told WCVB.
Both men refused medical attention after the scuffle.
Dana was arraigned in Framingham District Court on Thursday and initially held without bail, but a judge on Friday released him on a $7,500 cash bond, according to NBC 10 Boston.
“I’m fuming that he’s out now. This is insane. He just tried killing me two days ago, and then it’s like, apparently you can just pay bond, and it’s wiped clean,” Duffy told the outlet. “When he toppled on me in the water, there was nothing I could do.”
“He literally came up to me and my friends, and was instantly being aggressive and rude for no reason, in trying to kick us out of a public space,” Duffy said. “We weren’t having it, so we weren’t moving, and then he eventually came down after we were arguing with each other, and then more arguing led to him attacking me and then shoving me in the water, and I needed my friends to help me get up.”
Senator Susan Collins of Maine has expressed concern over a recent report published by the New York Times that casts a shadow over Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate running for the U.S. Senate. The report includes allegations from several of Platner’s former girlfriends, who have described his past behavior as “unsettling.” Collins labeled these allegations as “troubling.”
In a video shared on X by Connor Clement, a reporter with WMTWTV News, Collins was asked for her reaction to the New York Times report. Collins stated that Platner “has a lot of questions to answer.”
A reporter asked Collins for her reaction to the emerging scandal involving her potential opponent in the upcoming November election. “Have you had a chance to read the story? What’s the takeaway for you?” the reporter inquired.
In response, Collins stated, “The allegations in the latest story are troubling, and I believe that Graham Platner has a lot of questions to answer.”
When pressed on whether these allegations might impact Platner’s support among voters, Collins acknowledged that such decisions ultimately lie with the people of Maine.
The New York Times article details accounts from three women who had long-term romantic relationships with Platner. They describe witnessing “patterns of heavy drinking and womanizing” during their time with him.
Three women, who had been involved in “romantic relationships” with Platner for several years, told the outlet about instances in which they saw alleged “patterns of heavy drinking and womanizing”:
Lyndsey Fifield, 40, a Virginia conservative who has worked for right-leaning groups and Republican campaigns, recalled him as “cavalierly contemptuous of women’s emotions, of our ‘weakness.’” Ms. Fifield, who dated Mr. Platner from roughly 2013 t0 2015, said that his offensive posts “reminded me of just how much he hated women.”
Jenny Racicot, 41, a Maine Democrat, who said she dated him casually off and on between 2019 and 2021, said the posts deepened her belief that he did not respect women. “When I saw the old comments that he made online,” she said, “I recognized a version of him that I had experiences with.”
One woman, Lyndsey Fifield, a conservative who “met Mr. Platner in 2013,” while he was attending George Washington University, shared with the outlet how, while Platner “could be rough with her,” he “never” hit her or punched her. Fifield reportedly shared how Platner allegedly “regularly grabbed her by the shoulders — sometimes hard enough to leave marks.”
Fifield also shared with the outlet how, in one instance in which they had been arguing, Platner allegedly “twisted her arm behind her back, shoved her into a bedroom and held the door closed from the other side so she couldn’t get out.”
Another woman, Jenny Racicot, a Democrat who dated Platner “casually off and on between 2019 and 2021,” shared with the outlet that in one instance, Platner “arrived at her house drunk, after she asked him not to come over.”
The report by the New York Times comes after another by the Wall Street Journal found that Platner’s wife had admitted to his campaign that he had sent sexually explicit texts to other women early on in their marriage. The Wall Street Journal‘s report also shared that Platner had an “active account on Kik, a popular, private messaging app,” with a profile picture showing him “shirtless with a towel wrapped around his waist.”
If you’re over 60 and experiencing stiffness in your hips, shoulders, or ankles, incorporating six targeted stretches into your routine could significantly enhance your mobility and safety.
Stretching is often overlooked by individuals over 60, as it might seem less beneficial compared to walking or strength exercises. However, neglecting flexibility is a common mistake. As a seasoned personal trainer with nearly four decades of experience and two decades dedicated to educating future trainers at TRAINFITNESS—one of the UK’s top personal training institutions—I can attest that a strategic selection of stretches, practiced several times weekly, can restore the range of motion necessary for an easier and safer daily routine.
Common issues frequently arise, such as tight hip flexors from prolonged sitting, leading to a hunched posture and restricted stride. Stiff shoulders can hinder overhead and behind-the-back reach, requiring compensation from the lower back. Limited ankle mobility is a significant, often overlooked contributor to balance challenges. Additionally, tight hamstrings can make forward bending feel as strenuous as a workout.
What I See Most Often
It’s also common to see people engaging in ineffective stretching techniques. This includes bouncing in and out of positions, holding their breath, or stretching into pain rather than reaching a gentle, sustained pull. Many focus solely on areas that feel tight, ignoring other regions that may be restricting their movement.
The same three or four issues come up almost every time. Tight hip flexors from years of sitting, which pull people into a slightly hunched posture and shorten their stride. Stiff shoulders that make it hard to reach overhead or behind the back without compensating with the lower back. Poor ankle mobility, which is one of the biggest hidden factors in balance problems. And tight hamstrings that make bending forward feel like a workout in itself.
The other thing I see constantly is people stretching in ways that don’t help them. Bouncing in and out of a position, holding the breath, pushing into sharp pain rather than a steady pull. Or stretching only what already feels tight while ignoring the bits that are limiting them.
Why Flexibility Matters After 60
Shutterstock
Almost every balance recovery you make in real life depends on how far your joints can move at speed. If you trip on a paving slab, the body needs your ankles, hips and shoulders to react quickly through their full range. Stiff ankles in particular are a huge problem. If you can’t shift your weight forward over your foot, you can’t catch yourself when you stumble; you just go over. Tight hips shorten your stride and make people shuffle, which is one of the biggest predictors of falls in older adults.
Tight shoulders make reaching for the banister or a worktop slower and less reliable. Flexibility on its own won’t prevent every fall, but the combination of mobile joints and stronger legs is what gives you a fighting chance to stay upright when something goes wrong.
Standing Calf Stretch
Ankle mobility is one of the biggest factors in balance and a normal walking gait. Lose it and you lose your ability to catch yourself when you stumble.
Muscles Trained: Calves and ankles
How to Do It:
Stand facing a wall with your hands at shoulder height
Step one foot back and keep the back leg straight with the heel firmly on the floor
Bend the front knee and lean gently into the wall until you feel a steady pull in the back calf
Hold for 30 seconds, then swap sides
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t lift the back heel off the floor, which removes the stretch
Don’t lean so far forward that the back knee bends
Don’t bounce in and out of the position.
Half-Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch
This loosens the front of the hip so you stand taller and walk with a longer stride. Tight hip flexors are behind a huge amount of lower back ache in older adults.
Muscles Trained: Hip flexors
How to Do It:
Kneel on one knee with the other foot flat on the floor in front of you, knee at roughly 90 degrees
Place a folded towel under the kneeling knee for comfort
Tuck the pelvis under and squeeze the back glute
Gently shift your weight forward until you feel a pull in the front of the back hip
Hold for 30 seconds and swap sides
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t arch the lower back instead of tucking the pelvis, which puts the stretch into the spine rather than the hip
Don’t lean so far forward that you lose balance
Don’t forget to squeeze the back glute, which is what protects the lower back.
Doorway Chest Stretch
This counters the rounded posture most of us develop from years of sitting and looking at screens. Without this one, reaching overhead becomes a strain.
Muscles Trained: Chest and front of the shoulders
How to Do It:
Stand in a doorway and place your forearms on the door frame with elbows at about shoulder height
Step one foot through the doorway
Let your chest move forward gently until you feel a stretch across the front of the chest and shoulders
Hold for 30 seconds
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t push too far and strain the shoulder joint
Don’t arch the lower back to fake more range
Don’t set the elbows too high, which moves the stretch into the neck.
Seated Hamstring Stretch
This helps with bending forward, picking things up off the floor, and getting in and out of cars without grunting.
Muscles Trained: Hamstrings
How to Do It:
Sit on the edge of a sturdy chair
Straighten one leg out in front with the heel on the floor and toes pointing up
Keep the back straight, place your hands on the bent thigh for support
Tip forward from the hips, not the spine, until you feel a strong but tolerable pull behind the straight leg
Hold for 30 seconds, then swap
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t round the back to reach further, which stretches the spine rather than the hamstrings
Don’t lock the bent knee
Don’t hold your breath, which always tightens the muscle you’re trying to lengthen.
Seated Thoracic Rotation
This restores the ability to turn and look behind you, which matters for driving, reversing the car, putting on a seatbelt, and avoiding shoulder strain when reaching across the body.
Muscles Trained: Mid-back
How to Do It:
Sit tall in a sturdy chair with feet flat on the floor
Cross your arms over your chest
Slowly turn your upper body to the right, leading with the chest, not the head
Pause at the end of your range
Return to center and repeat on the other side
Do five rotations on each side
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t turn the head and shoulders without actually rotating the spine
Don’t let the knees swing round, which takes the work out of the mid-back
Don’t rush the movement, which means you never reach the end of range.
Standing Quad Stretch With Chair Support
This helps with stair climbing, kneeling, and getting up off the floor. Tight quads also pull on the kneecap, which is a common cause of knee niggles in older adults.
Muscles Trained: Front of the thigh
How to Do It:
Stand behind a sturdy chair and rest one hand on the back of it for balance
Bend the opposite knee and bring the heel up towards your bottom
Take hold of the ankle, or the trouser leg if you can’t reach the ankle
Keep the knees close together and the pelvis tucked under
Hold for 30 seconds and swap
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t pull the foot out to the side, which strains the knee
Don’t arch the lower back rather than tucking the pelvis
Don’t skip the balance support and turn the stretch into a wobble.
How This Pays Off Daily

Every one of them has a direct payoff in something you do every day. The calf stretch makes walking feel smoother and helps when you catch a toe on a kerb. The hip flexor stretch lets you stand taller, which makes getting out of a chair noticeably easier because you’re not fighting against tight hips every time you stand. The doorway chest stretch puts you in a position where reaching overhead, into a kitchen cupboard for example, stops being an effort and stops causing the little twinges in the shoulder so many older clients put up with.
Hamstring flexibility makes bending down to put on shoes or pick up a grandchild’s toy feel less like a maneuver. Thoracic rotation is the one most people don’t appreciate until they get it back. Reversing the car, turning to look at someone next to you on the bus, putting on a seatbelt. All of it gets easier. And the quad stretch helps with stairs, particularly coming down, when the front of the thigh is doing most of the work.
How Often to Stretch

Five times a week is the realistic minimum to see change. Daily is better, and it doesn’t have to be in one long session. Two short blocks of about ten minutes work very well, and people stick to them, which matters more than anything else.
The best time of day is whenever you’ll actually do them, but a couple of guidelines help. Don’t do deep static stretching first thing in the morning before you’ve moved around at all. The body is stiff, and you’ll get less out of it. A short walk first, even just round the kitchen for a few minutes, makes a real difference.
Stretching in the evening, particularly before bed, often feels best and can help with sleep quality. If you’re stretching after a walk or a strength session, the tissues are already warm, so that’s an ideal window.
What Results to Expect

Within a fortnight, most people notice things feel a bit easier. Getting out of a chair, putting socks on, turning to look behind in the car. Within six weeks, if you’ve stayed consistent, the change is significant enough that family members tend to comment on it. By three months, the difference can be quite dramatic, particularly in posture and stride length.
The flip side is that flexibility is lost almost as quickly as it’s gained. Stop for a month, and you’ll feel it. This isn’t a six-week program that finishes. It’s something you do for the rest of your life, in the same way you brush your teeth.
Working Around Arthritis or Injury

All three are reasons to modify, not to avoid stretching altogether. With arthritis, the rule is gentle, frequent, and never pushing into sharp pain. A steady pull is fine; a sharp catch is not. Warm joints respond much better than cold ones, so a warm shower or a few minutes of walking first makes a real difference.
For stiff joints, reduce the range and hold for less time, perhaps fifteen seconds rather than thirty, and build up gradually over weeks.
Old injuries usually need specific advice, particularly anything involving the spine, knees or shoulders. The general principle is to avoid the position that originally caused the injury but to stretch around it. If you’ve had a hip replacement, for instance, certain ranges are out of bounds and your surgeon will have told you which. Stick to those instructions.
When to Check With a Doctor

If you have any heart condition, recent surgery, unmanaged blood pressure, severe osteoporosis, or have had a fall recently that hasn’t been investigated, talk to your GP before you start. Anyone with a diagnosed joint condition should also check, particularly if they’ve been told to avoid certain movements.
The warning signs to stop are clear:
Sharp pain rather than a steady pull
Pain that lingers for more than an hour or two after stretching
Numbness or tingling, particularly down a limb
Dizziness, especially when changing positions
Any of these is a reason to stop that stretch and get it looked at before continuing.
