GKN Aerospace Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Memorial Day Chemical Leak in California

0

The aerospace firm at the heart of a chemical crisis that led to the evacuation of thousands of California residents over the Memorial Day holiday weekend is now facing yet another lawsuit.

This legal challenge accuses the UK-based GKN Aerospace of negligence, trespass, and nuisance. It claims the company neglected to uphold safety protocols, despite receiving prior regulatory warnings and having a history of environmental infractions.

The lawsuit is one of many filed in the aftermath of a malfunctioning storage tank that contained flammable methyl methacrylate. The tank overheated and was compromised, leading to evacuation orders across multiple cities in Orange County, California, during the holiday period.

Officials reported that a crack developed in the tank, which unexpectedly released pressure and helped prevent a catastrophic explosion, allowing most of the displaced residents to return home.

In response to the crisis, Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County as the failing chemical tank threatened to cause a devastating explosion.

The plaintiffs’ “trespass” claim is particularly notable, arguing that the chemical vapors, odors and airborne contaminants migrating into their community constituted an invasion of their property.

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified compensation and punitive damages for emotional distress, the temporary loss of property use and the long-term diminution of property value caused by chemical stigma.

During the emergency, authorities ordered some 50,000 people living in parts of Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove — where the GKN facility has been located since 1966 — Stanton and Westminster to leave their homes.

President Donald Trump granted a federal emergency declaration on Monday in response to the incident.

The lawsuit claims that GKN “consciously disregarded the rights and safety of Plaintiffs and other nearby residents by failing to implement, fund, maintain, inspect, repair, and enforce adequate safety systems despite the known risks associated with MMA and the facility’s hazardous materials operations.”

The Garden Grove facility, which manufactures windows and canopies for commercial and military aircraft, as well as spacecraft, had a prior regulatory history concerning environmental and air quality compliance, the lawsuit states. Specifically, it points to a reported 2025 settlement involving air quality violations that resulted in a substantial civil penalty.

“Plaintiffs are informed and believe that this prior history placed Defendants on additional notice that their hazardous materials operations required strict compliance, careful monitoring, and conservative safety practices,” the complaint states.

Exposure to MMA can cause serious respiratory problems, neurological issues and irritation to the skin, eyes and throat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

At least 44 lawsuits have been filed related to the incident, the Orange County Register reported.

Fox News Digital has reached out to GKN for comment.

In a statement issued earlier in the week, the company apologized for the emergency.

“I recognize how challenging this has been, particularly over the Memorial Day holiday,” said GKN Senior Vice President Steve Carlin, who oversees the Garden Grove site’s programs. “We are committed to understanding what occurred and identifying ways we can support those affected.”

Barcelona Officially Secures £70 Million Transfer of Anthony Gordon Following Brief Delay, Signs Five-Year Contract After Newcastle Departure

Barcelona has officially introduced Anthony Gordon as their latest acquisition, following his £70 million transfer from Newcastle. The talented player is set to remain with the team until 2031.

Gordon was photographed inside the iconic Nou Camp, although the official presentation faced significant delays. Initially scheduled for 12:30 PM, the event had yet to commence by 8 PM.

The 25-year-old, who is also part of England’s World Cup squad for the upcoming summer, successfully completed his medical examination and was poised to be announced as a Barcelona player. Despite this, he had to endure a few more hours of anticipation before the news became public.

Ultimately, Barcelona confirmed his signing via a social media post, accompanied by the tagline: “Catch him if you can.”

During the live-streamed event, Gordon appeared on stage in a formal suit and addressed the audience in Spanish. He then continued in English, expressing, “I knew it would happen. I stayed calm at the hotel with my family and agents, feeling very excited. It was tough to wait.”

‘I cannot explain (the delay). My part was done. I have been ready for today, I think it was legal things and very small details.’

Then, he answered a question in Spanish, before adding: ‘I found out very late. But as soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was no question. It is the biggest club on the planet, it is something I always dreamed of, it is a dream come true.’

Sporting director Deco met with Gordon’s representatives on Monday, and on Wednesday it emerged that the LaLiga champions had agreed a £70m deal that includes bonuses and a future percentage of any sale for the Magpies.

The winger arrived in Spain on Thursday afternoon and has since signed a five-year contract at the club.

Following his presentation at the Nou Camp, Gordon will join up with his England team-mates for the Three Lions’ pre-World Cup training camp in Florida.

Barcelona have beaten out tough competition to secure the sought-after forward’s signature, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool both having shown strong interest in the player.

Gordon’s camp had spoken to both Barca and Bayern, and the framework of personal terms with the latter had been in place for several weeks. However, the Bundesliga club would not go beyond their £60m valuation.

Gordon also said at his unveiling: ‘I know it comes with a lot of responsibility but I am ready. The shirt holds a lot of weight and I am ready.’ After being asked to answer in Spanish, he joked that he would struggle, and then did speak in the language again.

He added: ‘I spoke with Hansi Flick, I am even more excited. he is a very nice person, a great man manager.

‘I was excited to play for Barca when I was three. To play with Lamine (Yamal) and others is very exciting for me. They are the best players in the world, they have so much quality. When we played them at St James’ Park, we could not touch the ball.

‘I wanted to speak Spanish because I believed I would play for Barca, believe it or not. I told the physio in Newcastle that one day I would play for Barca.

‘I only won one trophy with Newcastle, so I am extremely excited to win here. It is special to win anything with Barca, it’s the biggest club on the planet. To win here would be very special. I want to win every trophy, but to win the Champions League and No 6 would be an iconic moment.’

He would then go on to pose with a Barcelona shirt, holding up the back, with his name and ‘2031’ printed on it.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will have to turn their sights elsewhere, after they learned that Gordon preferred a move to Barca over the switch to Anfield.

Gordon came close to joining Liverpool two years ago with a medical set up in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024, only for Newcastle to pull the plug on the deal as they sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest instead.

Everton have a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15 per cent of the profit after they sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45m in 2023.

He has set his sights on winning the Champions League in his first season with the club

He has set his sights on winning the Champions League in his first season with the club

The England winger finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals but failed to feature in the final six games of the campaign amid speculation over his future.

Magpies manager Eddie Howe previously admitted that the uncertainty surrounding Gordon was keeping him out of the team toward the end of the season.

It is the second most expensive sale in Newcastle’s history, after the British record £125m fee they received from Liverpool for Alexander Isak last summer.

Gordon’s arrival in Catalonia cast further doubt over the future of Marcus Rashford, who has impressed on loan from Manchester United.

The only apparent obstacle to the LaLiga champions signing Rashford permanently has been financial, so it has been deemed a surprise to see them make a much larger outlay on Gordon.

It is understood that despite the signing of Gordon, Barcelona still intend to discuss a deal for Rashford with United this week, but their objective is to secure another loan rather than the permanent deal that the Red Devils seek.

Hansi Flick’s side have until June 15 to trigger a clause to buy the England forward for £26m.

Breakthrough Discovery: New MND Drug Reduces Key Disease Markers Significantly

0

It was during one of their regular strolls that Jenny Richmond’s friends first observed her developing limp. They pointed it out, but Jenny, 69, was initially unaware. “I said no, I don’t think I’m limping, and they said, yes, you’re definitely limping,” she recalled.

As time went by, Jenny’s limp became more pronounced, prompting her to piece together a troubling puzzle. Motor neurone disease (MND) was no stranger to her family, having claimed the life of her mother at the age of 70.

“Unfortunately, my mum had motor neurone disease for two years,” Jenny shared, reflecting on her mother’s battle with the illness.

Motor neurone disease (MND) had already afflicted members of her family, including her mother, who passed away from it at the age of 70.

“Unfortunately my mum had motor neurone, she had it for two years,” she said.

Jenny’s nephew was only 18 when he also passed from the disease. His first sign was a limp.

Professor Steve Vucic is currently treating Jenny.

“His was very aggressive, and he only had it for 10 months from the time he was diagnosed to the time he passed away,” she said.

The underlying culprit is a genetic mutation called SOD1, technically known as superoxide dismutase 1.

It affects up to two per cent of all MND cases and was discovered in 1993. It was the first genetic trigger identified, with SOD1 being mostly inherited.

Professor Steve Vucic is currently treating Jenny with a new drug called Tofersen, which is the first targeted treatment to slow the disease in people with SOD1.

It binds to messenger RNA to reduce the amount of harmful SOD1 proteins that build up in the nerve cells.

“Tofersen is a huge advance, it’s the first of its class of treatments,” Professor Vucic, University of Sydney and Senior Neurologist at Concord Hospital, said.

It has been shown to reduce key disease markers in the spinal fluid, including neurofilament (NfL) which measures nerve loss.

Studies spanning up to four years have also produced very promising results.

“Not only does it slow down functional decline and muscle weakness, but in about 20 to 30 per cent of patients it improves function and muscle strength which has not been shown by any other medication so that is really exciting,” said Vucic.

Jenny has been receiving monthly injections of Tofersen through the spine since November 2025.

“I had some major falls before that but I haven’t had any falls since,” she said.

“I feel like the drug is definitely working. I say to the kids what do you think, am I getting any worse, and they say I think you’re staying at bay,” she said.

The only side-effect Jenny has encountered is headaches, which are linked to the lumbar puncture.

“Pleasingly, patients have tolerated Tofersen quite well, certainly in our cohort and that’s what has borne out in these larger studies that have been published,” said Vucic.

Jenny Richmond suspected her worsening limp could be motor neurone disease.

The promising data and the urgency in treating this rapidly progressive disease recently led the Therapeutic Goods Administration to grant provisional approval of the drug, giving eligible patients in Australia faster access.

Studies also show earlier intervention leads to better outcomes.

“The availability of a targeted treatment reinforces the need for clinicians to act with urgency; any suspicion of MND should prompt immediate referral to a neurologist or specialist centre,” said Professor Matthew Kiernan, chief executive of Neuroscience Research Australia.

While people with other forms of MND are not eligible for Tofersen, Professor Vucic says research is ongoing and he expects other advances in therapy will follow in the next one to two years.

“There are over 40 different genes implicated in motor neurone disease and there are other boutique genes so you wonder what the future holds and that’s one of precision medicine,” said Vucic.

Jenny tries to remain positive and is focused on being around for her close-knit family, including her three children and seven grandchildren.

“They’re my life,” she said.

“So I would like to be around for them to see them grow up a bit more.”

Mother Accused of Fraudulently Using Missing Daughter’s ID to Obtain Food Stamps

0

A mother has been taken into custody for allegedly continuing to collect food stamp benefits in her missing daughter’s name for nearly a decade, according to police reports.

Shannon Anderson, who is both homeless and a registered sex offender, faces charges of felony food stamp fraud. Authorities claim she unlawfully received benefits intended for her daughter, Jodie “Brooke” Anderson. Brooke disappeared from a Nashville restaurant at the age of 18, as reported by WSMV.

“It’s unacceptable to exploit the system like this,” expressed Brooke’s aunt, De’Anna Anderson, in an interview with the outlet. “While our veterans struggle to access essential benefits, she’s capitalizing on her daughter’s disappearance.”

The troubling case dates back to June 2018, when Brooke was officially reported missing. At the time, both Brooke and her mother were struggling with homelessness and substance abuse issues, and had last been seen at a Jack in the Box fast-food restaurant.

Brooke was reported missing in June 2018 after she and her mother — who were both homeless and drug addicts — went to a Jack in the Box.

Shannon, 51, who was the last person to see her alive, went to use the bathroom and found her gone when she returned.

Her daughter wasn’t reported missing until August 2018, while her mother was incarcerated, her aunt said.

The case went cold, but De’Anna hopes that her mom’s latest arrest will bring new attention to Brooke’s missing persons case.

“I was hoping for years we would find her, but everything points to murder,” she said, adding that her niece’s lifestyle leads her to believe she was likely killed.

“Finding her would take a huge load off of me and finding out what happened. Then I would want justice. If I said I didn’t, I’d be lying.”

Shannon previously worked for the Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk’s Office and as a school bus driver — before drugs upended her life.

She is listed as homeless and has a long criminal history dating back to 2013, including a charge for promoting prostitution in 2017 that landed her on the Tennessee sex offender registry, according to court records.

Shannon remains in custody on a $22,000 bond on all seven charges related to food stamp fraud, violating her sex offender registration and failure to appear.

Man Allegedly Kills Girlfriend, Flees to Mexico with Their 5-Year-Old Child

Authorities are currently on the hunt for a man from Los Angeles who has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend and is suspected of escaping to Mexico with their 5-year-old child.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on May 28 that they have filed charges against Ruben Fregosojuarez, also known as Ruben Fregoso, for one count of murder and one count of misdemeanor child abuse.

The suspect, aged 40, is alleged to have taken the life of his 36-year-old girlfriend around May 25.

On that day, Los Angeles Police were dispatched to a location on the 2600 block of South Alsace Avenue for a welfare check at 12:39 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased adult female inside the residence.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, “died as a result of violence.” While police reports labeled her as Fregosojuarez’s wife, the district attorney’s office identified her as his girlfriend.

Ruben Fregosojuarez Allegedly Fled to Mexico With Daughter

Prosecutors believe that after the killing, Fregosojuarez fled to Mexico with the couple’s 5-year-old daughter Daleyza Fregoso.

“The killing of a mother and the abduction of a young child is the kind of violence that shocks the entire community,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said the announcement from his office. “I cannot imagine the grief and fear that the innocent child faced as she was allegedly snatched after her mother was killed.”

Police said that Fregosojuarez had allegedly made statements “indicating he intended to flee the country,” before he disappeared.

Though an Amber Alert initially reported the pair were believed to be traveling in a white 2019 Land Rover Discovery, the California Highway Patrol told NBC 4 that the vehicle was later recovered inside the parking lot of the San Ysidro Point of Entry near the border to Mexico.

Fregosojuarez and his daughter were not there at the time, although surveillance footage obtained by the news outlet allegedly showed a man carrying a suitcase and holding a little girl’s hand before the vehicle was discovered, the outlet reported.

The man was wearing a black vest with ripped jeans and had on a black hat. The child was wearing a light blue shirt and sweatpants.

Oxygen reached out to the California Highway Patrol for additional comment, but did not receive an immediate reply.

Search Continues For Ruben Fregosojuarez and His Daughter

As the search continues, authorities said they are committed to finding both Fregosojuarez and his daughter.

“The defendant will face his day in court,” Hochman said, “and our Family Violence Division will pursue every available resource and work with federal and Mexican law enforcement authorities to seek justice for the woman whose life was stolen and for the child caught in this tragedy.”

Anyone who sees Fregosojuarez is urged to call 911. Police have also asked that anyone with information on the case to contact the Robbery Homicide Division, South Bureau Section detectives at (323) 786-5100.

Capitol Hill Spotlight: Unveiling Compelling UFO and Alien Evidence to the Public

0

The movement advocating for UFO disclosure appears to have reached a critical juncture. With growing public curiosity and President Donald Trump’s directive to declassify materials related to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), a coalition of lawmakers, whistleblowers, and researchers is rallying for what they deem a groundbreaking push for transparency.

On June 9, David Grusch, along with several members of Congress, will convene at the US Capitol. Their mission is to urge the release of UFO-related evidence that Grusch claims is currently buried within classified government archives.

Grusch, who previously testified under oath before Congress in 2023, asserts that he possesses direct knowledge of covert government programs involving technology not of human origin. His testimony has fueled calls for greater transparency and public disclosure.

The former intelligence officer is anticipated to present compelling reasons for why these materials should be scrutinized and made accessible to the public, potentially steering the conversation on UAPs into unprecedented territory.

The former intelligence officer is expected to outline why he believes those materials should now be reviewed and released to the public.

‘President Trump now has an historic opportunity; this press conference is about moving from testimony to action,’ Grusch said. ‘Let the American people judge the facts for themselves.’

The event comes after the Trump administration has released two batches of UFO files this month, with the first dump on May 8.

Investigative filmmaker and moderator of the meeting, James Fox, said: ‘The public deserves real answers, Congress deserves access, and reality should not be classified. If our requests are fulfilled, this could change the course of history.’

The second batch of UFO files released by the Pentagon included a video of a mysterious object in the sky

The second batch of UFO files released by the Pentagon included a video of a mysterious object in the sky

The event, set for 1pm ET, will feature remarks from Representatives Eric Burlison, Jared Moskowitz, Anna Paulina Luna and Tim Burchett, with additional participants to be announced.

Burlison said in a press release: ‘President Trump is the first president to take concrete steps towards transparency on UAP.

‘The recent releases are an important start, so now it’s the obligation of Congress to make sure career intelligence officials don’t obstruct his directive, in order to prevent selective disclosure or another dead end.’

Officials said additional releases from agencies, including the CIA, are expected in the coming weeks as pressure grows for greater transparency surrounding UFO investigations.

For decades, many UFO-related records remained locked away due to Cold War secrecy, national security concerns and fears about exposing sensitive military technology detected by radar and surveillance systems.

Critics have long argued that successive administrations avoided publicly acknowledging unexplained cases out of concern over public backlash, institutional embarrassment and growing conspiracy theories surrounding UFO investigations.

On Wednesday, President Trump held a Cabinet meeting where he said: ‘We’re releasing a lot of information having to do with extraterrestrial… things and people are totally fascinated by it.

‘It’s literally trending number one, can you believe it?’

David Grusch (center) previously testified under oath before Congress in 2023, claiming he had firsthand knowledge of secret government programs involving technology of non-human origin

Grusch testified alongside two other military whistleblowers, Ryan Graves, an esteemed former pilot, and Navy veteran fighter pilot Commander David Fravor, who witnessed the 2004 ‘Tic Tac’ UFO.

House lawmakers held the hearing to pressure the executive branch to release more information about unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) or UFOs.

This significant event was the first time these three men, or any individual, had sworn under oath about UFO encounters.

Graves, a former F-18 pilot with over a decade of service in the US Navy, was the first to give opening statements.

‘My testimony is based on information I’ve been given by individuals with a long-standing track record of legitimacy and service to this country, many of whom have shared compelling evidence in the form of photography, official documentation and classified oral testimony to myself and many various colleagues,’ he told lawmakers, stating he was driven to share it by a ‘commitment to truth and transparency.’

He told the committee that he and more than 30 aircrew members and veterans have experienced UAPs, unidentified aerial phenomena, along with members of Congress who have confided in him.

Graves said, as an F-18 pilot in the Red Rippers, their squadron was ‘split by UAP’ during a training mission near Virginia Beach in 2014.

He described the object as ‘dark gray or black inside a transparent sphere.’ It was about 15 feet in diameter and came within 50 feet of the lead aircraft.

Ryan Graves, a former pilot, Air Force and intelligence agency veteran David Grusch and Navy veteran fighter pilot Commander David Fravor have been sworn in and are ready to share their experiences

The mission commander ended the flight, and the squadron submitted a safety report. Graves continued to explain.

‘This story is more common than we expect,’ Graves said, ‘more than 30 witnesses had told his group about similar sightings.’

‘Often, they are veterans with decades of flying experience,’ he added.

Graves also said: ‘UAPs are in our airspace but are grossly underreported.’

Grusch spoke next, providing details about how the US government has ‘intact and partially intact’ extraterrestrial vehicles.

He has previously said the US has run a top-secret UFO retrieval program for decades and claimed the ‘Vatican was involved’ in the first-ever UFO crash.

Grusch said last month that the first recovery of a UFO was in Magenta, Italy, in 1933, and Mussolini’s Italian government held it until 1944 through 1945, when Pope Pius XII tipped America off about it.

David Fravor discussed the Tic Tac-shaped object seen in the sky over California on November 10, 2004 Video of what the Navy could trace of the object was leaked in 2017, and the Pentagon declassified the case in 2020

David Fravor discussed the Tic Tac-shaped object seen in the sky over California on November 10, 2004 Video of what the Navy could trace of the object was leaked in 2017, and the Pentagon declassified the case in 2020

‘Due to my extensive executive-level intelligence support duties, I was cleared to literally all relevant compartments and in a position of extreme trust in both my military and civilian capacities,’ Grusch said during Wednesday’s hearing.

‘I was informed in the course of my official duties of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse engineering program to which I was denied access to that additional read-on when I requested it.’

Grusch also said he had faced brutal retaliation after coming forward about his firsthand accounts of UFOs.

‘I do have knowledge of active planned reprisal activity against myself and other colleagues.

‘There were certain colleagues of mine who were brutally administratively attacked. It makes me very upset as a leader to see that happen to other co-workers and superiors of mine in the last three years,’ Grusch added.

Fravor reminded the world about his infamous 2004 encounter with the ‘Tic Tac’ UFO.

‘I’d like to say that the tic tac object we engaged in 2004 was far superior to anything that we had at the time, have today or looking to develop in the next 10 years, he said.

‘If we, in fact, have programs that possess this technology, it needs to have oversight from those people that the citizens of this country elected in office to represent what is best for the United States and best for the citizens.’

Fravor described the Tic Tac object as being ‘perfectly white, smooth and had no windows,’ with ‘two little objects that came out of the bottom.’

Historic Israeli-Lebanese Military Talks at Pentagon Target Hezbollah Threat

0

In a significant diplomatic development, military representatives from Israel and Lebanon commenced negotiations on Friday morning in Washington, facilitated by the Pentagon. These discussions are part of a new U.S.-mediated effort to enhance security coordination, with the aim of preventing further tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border and reinforcing a delicate ceasefire established in mid-April.

A spokesperson from the State Department informed Fox News Digital that, “As we have consistently emphasized, the sole route to enduring peace is through direct talks between the two sovereign states.”

This dialogue represents a transition from diplomatic engagement to direct military coordination. The agenda is expected to cover critical issues such as enforcing the ceasefire, ensuring border stability, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of southern Lebanon, and the role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in curbing Hezbollah’s influence.

REPORTS INDICATE ISRAEL IS MOVING TOWARDS A CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT WITH HEZBOLLAH

Michael Needham, Mike Waltz, Marco Rubio, Michel Issa, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and Yechiel Leiter standing in a row inside the State Department

Present at the State Department meeting in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 2026, were prominent figures such as Michael Needham, counselor for the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, Lebanese Ambassador to the U.S. Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter. Their gathering was captured in a photograph by Jacquelyn Martin of the Associated Press.

The talks come weeks after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire first reached during the broader regional conflict tied to the U.S.–Iran war. While large-scale fighting has eased, Israeli forces continue operating inside parts of southern Lebanon and Hezbollah maintains drone and rocket capabilities, keeping tensions high along the border.

The ceasefire was extended on May 15 for another 45 days, creating pressure on both sides to show progress before the current arrangement expires.

But analysts say the central question overshadowing the talks is whether Lebanon can realistically curb Hezbollah’s military power without risking internal collapse.

“This will be the first meeting between representatives of the militaries since the start of the negotiation process between Lebanon and Israel,” Ahmed Sharawi, a research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank, told Fox News Digital.

Representing Lebanon in the talks is Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal, who previously served as commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon, an area where Hezbollah maintains a strong presence. Hezbollah is the Iran-backed Lebanese terrorist organization designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization.

“What we should expect is talks regarding de-confliction and what the expectations are for the LAF in terms of the broader disarmament plan against Hezbollah’s weapons,” he said.

Sharawi said the chances of a broader breakthrough remain limited so long as Hezbollah remains heavily armed and politically entrenched inside Lebanon.

“The biggest obstacle here is that the Lebanese state is yet to present a feasible plan to disarm Hezbollah,” he said.

He pointed to the terms of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, which placed responsibility for disarming Hezbollah on the Lebanese state.

“We are yet to see the confiscation of one single bullet from Hezbollah,” Sharawi said.

He also warned that Hezbollah’s deep support among Lebanon’s Shiite population complicates any attempt to move toward normalization with Israel.

“There’s a fear of a civil war,” he said. “That also accounts for the Lebanese state’s unwillingness to disarm Hezbollah.”

The talks opened as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled Israel intends to maintain military pressure on Hezbollah despite the negotiations.

Sharawi argued the Trump administration nevertheless appears determined to push the process forward as part of a broader effort to weaken Iranian influence in the region.

“The reason behind these meetings is that President Trump is really trying to push for a peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon,” he said. “Peace between these two countries could really undermine Hezbollah and its influence in Lebanon.”

Israeli analysts similarly described the talks less as a breakthrough and more as a strategic signal aimed at Hezbollah.

“The war between us and Hezbollah is continuing,” Yossi Kuperwasser, senior project manager at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and former head of the Research Division of Israeli Military Intelligence, told Fox News Digital.

“There is no doubt the Lebanese government does not have a monopoly on the use of force in Lebanon,” he said.

Kuperwasser said expectations for an immediate diplomatic breakthrough should remain low, but argued the talks themselves send an important political message.

“The purpose of these talks is first and foremost to send a message to Hezbollah and also to the Americans,” he said. “Both sides are prepared to sit together against Hezbollah and signal that they are moving, even if slowly, toward normalization between Israel and Lebanon.”

He argued Hezbollah has been weakened politically and militarily by the ongoing conflict and by growing frustration among Lebanese civilians displaced by the fighting.

“For years Hezbollah portrayed itself as the defender of Lebanon,” Kuperwasser said. “Now many Lebanese see Hezbollah as responsible for the suffering Lebanon is experiencing.”

Kuperwasser added that while Israel supports strengthening the Lebanese army, Beirut fears direct confrontation with Hezbollah could ignite another civil war.

“The Lebanese government fears military action against Hezbollah would lead to civil war,” he said. “That fear shapes everything.”

The talks also come amid mounting domestic pressure inside Israel, where critics of Netanyahu have accused the government of pursuing containment rather than decisive military victory against Hezbollah.

Speaking Friday during a visit to Israel’s northern front, Netanyahu said Israeli forces had crossed the Litani River and were operating across multiple parts of Lebanon.

“We are operating in Beirut, in the Bekaa Valley, across the entire front and striking Hezbollah hard,” Netanyahu said.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s leadership is attempting to balance growing American pressure with fears of internal instability and renewed sectarian conflict.

Season 2 of ‘The Day Of The Jackal’: Latest Updates and Insights

In 2024, the British spy thriller series “The Day of the Jackal” made a powerful entrance, garnering praise from critics and audiences alike. The show stars Eddie Redmayne as the enigmatic assassin known as the Jackal. His character navigates the challenging balance between his deadly assignments and personal life with his wife, Nuria, played by Úrsula Corberó.

The debut season thrusts viewers into a tense chase, as the Jackal finds himself pursued by MI6 officer Bianca Pullman, portrayed by Lashana Lynch. Pullman is determined to hold him accountable for his numerous crimes. The season finale delivered a jaw-dropping twist, altering the series’ trajectory and leaving fans eagerly anticipating more. For those who have sought out similar thrilling shows to tide them over, there’s good news—more action and suspense are on the horizon.

The first season of the show sees him engaging in a cat-and-mouse game with MI6 officer Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch), who wants to bring him to justice for his many, many crimes. It concluded on a shocking note that changed the dynamic of the series and left viewers hungry for more. For everyone who has been watching the best shows like “The Days of the Jackal” to fill the void, the good news is that it’s set to return for more action and thrills.

At the helm of the first season was Ronan Bennett, the showrunner and lead writer, who brought his expertise from acclaimed projects like “Top Boy” and “MobLand,” along with co-writing credits for Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies.” Although Bennett will step back from his writing duties for the upcoming season, as reported by Variety, he remains an executive producer. The writing responsibilities are now in the capable hands of David Harrower.

Harrower, known for his work as a playwright and co-creator of the gripping drama “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” brings a fresh perspective to the series. This change could address some critiques of the first season, which, despite earning Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations, faced some criticism. Looper’s review highlighted a strong start but noted that the series lost its way as it progressed. An infusion of new creative energy may be precisely what the series needs as it ventures into its second season.

The Day of the Jackal Season 2 has a new lead writer

With the body count high from Season 1, the stage is set for new characters to emerge in Season 2. According to Deadline, Matt Bomer is joining the cast as a villain. Bomer, a seasoned actor, is well-known from his roles in popular series such as “White Collar,” “American Horror Story,” and “Doom Patrol.” His addition promises to add further intrigue to the unfolding drama.

Bennett’s replacement is known for his work as a playwright as well as being the co-creator of the excellent drama series “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” which stars Colin Firth. This change might be music to some people’s ears. Despite the series earning Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations, not everybody thought the show nailed the landing. Looper’s review of “The Day of the Jackal” Season 1 praised the beginning of the series but stated it went off the rails as it wore on. A shake-up in the creative department to freshen things up going into Season 2 could be just what the doctor ordered.

Matt Bomer has been cast as a new villain

The Jackal leaves plenty of bodies in his wake in “The Day of the Jackal” Season 1, so there are a lot of open spots on the roster for Season 2. As revealed by Deadline, Matt Bomer has hopped onboard for the second season, and he’s said to be playing a villain. Bomer isn’t a newcomer to the world of TV: He’s plied his trade in well-known series such as “White Collar,” “American Horror Story,” and “Doom Patrol.”

Bomer isn’t the only new cast member added for “The Days of the Jackal” Season 2. He’s also joined by Pablo Schreiber and Weruche Opia, both of whom will be familiar to TV fans. Schreiber is best known for the roles of inmate turned corrections officer George Mendez in “Orange Is the New Black” and Master Chief in the “Halo” series, while Opia is known for memorable roles in “Bad Education” and “I May Destroy You.”

Season 2 will be more faithful to the book

“The Day of the Jackal” is based on the book of the same name by Frederick Forsyth as well as the 1973 film adaptation. However, the first season of the show might have more in common with the 1997 film “The Jackal” starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere, which is a movie remake that’s way different from the original and deviates heavily from the source material. That’s because, for many fans of Forsyth, “The Day of the Jackal” Season 1 strayed too far from the book, especially in terms of how it humanizes the Jackal. “Even the Bruce Willis version got that right, or at the very least more right than this,” one Redditor bemoaned. “It demystifies the character for me to such an extent that this will render the show unrewatchable.”

Production company Carnival Films has admitted that there are lots of differences between the show and book. CEO and executive producer of the show Gareth Neame told Variety that “The Day of the Jackal” borrowed more from the very rewatchable ’70s movie adaptation than it did the original story, though they were sure to maintain that “same dynamic between the hunter and the hunted.” Whether it’s due to fans of the book being disgruntled or not, Neame confirmed to the Hollywood trade that Season 2 would implement “lots of elements from [Forsyth’s] novel that we didn’t utilize in Season 1.”

Season 2 will double down on what worked before

“The Day of the Jackal” Season 1 isn’t short on action and thrills. There are intriguing subplots and pulsating sequences that get the heart pumping faster, and these are the parts of the show that excite fans the most (there are even YouTube compilations featuring the Jackal’s best hits). The producers have been paying attention to what viewers have said about the series, and they’re going to provide more of the same in the sophomore season.

“We’ve been tracking how the show’s run and what people enjoy, and I think the premise of the assassin, how he works, who he works for, who employs his services, how he carries out his missions, people seem to be very drawn to that,” Carnival Films CEO and executive producer Gareth Neame told TV Insider, “and I guess we’ll continue in that vein.” That will come as welcome news to viewers who tuned into “The Day of the Jackal” Season 1 for the intrigue and assassinations.

Eddie Redmayne says Season 2 is more ambitious

There’s no disputing that the Jackal receives more of a backstory in “The Day of the Jackal” than he did in previous versions of the tale, where he’s been portrayed as something of an enigma. In fact, viewers even know that his real name is Alexander Duggan (which is one of the fake names he uses in the book) and that he has a family, which complicates matters for him further since it creates vulnerability and personal attachment. All of this sets the stage for a more ambitious story in Season 2.

In an interview with The Wrap in 2025, Eddie Redmayne confirmed that the way in which the character’s arc concludes at the end of Season 1 will play into his motivations for what’s to come, praising how “the ambition seems to have inflated” for the second season and adding that he can’t wait to get started. Even though viewers have already found out so much about the Jackal, the actor declared that there’s still much more to uncover about the character. “I think we’ve only scratched the surface of him,” he said.
